Unbelievable!

A must watch with jaw dropping plot. The actors are just unbelievable and the hype is really worth it. Even if you don't support Levski Sofia the film is spectacular because it's a story about love, about character, about communists regime, the poor, then the rich, the never the greedy. True to the fans until his last breath. The best film that Bulgaria has produced , definitely worthy of international recognition. It's humorous, romantic and veeeeery intense. Keeps you at the edge of your seat after the 20th minute. Having the film settle in, I can't find more words to admire the amazing job they have done so I will just say one last thing: watch it!

Reviving Bulgarian Cinema: A Film That Brings Hope for the Future and Deserves Oscar Recognition

Bulgarian cinema has been stagnating for decades, and unfortunately, 95% of the films that have come out have been of extremely low quality. Many projects suffer from a lack of strong storytelling, poor technical execution, and unconvincing performances, which have kept our national film industry from competing on the global stage. However, this film gave me hope for the future of our film industry. Impressive acting, exceptional directing, a wonderful script, and incredible work behind the camera make this a standout production that feels like a turning point. The attention to detail and the emotionally charged performances kept me engaged throughout the entire film. The cinematography is also on par with international standards, capturing both the beauty and the rawness of the story in a way that is rarely seen in Bulgarian films. I'm certain that this film should be Bulgaria's submission for the Oscar for International Feature Film, and I believe it has a great chance of winning. It's a must-watch.

Great movie about a legend of whole nation

Yesterday I wathed the movie, few days after the premiere. The hipe aroud it is more that.justified. The young actors plaing Gundi and Lita will have great start of their careers with this movie. I really admire the work of the producers who made a grown man cry like a little baby for 3 hours. I never expected this movie to be so impactful. In addition the actors game, I can distinguish the great work of the visual effects team, the stadiums looked great, the cars, the streeets really looked like in the 1960s. Also the way they represented the comunist regime can be compared to the HBO series Chernobyl.

Thank you for creating the best bulgarian movie of all time.

Masterpiece

One word - masterpiece. Not just a movie, but a story. About love in all its dimensions - the love for the beloved person, the love for the beloved team, the love for an entire nation. A story about honor, dignity, modesty, uncompromising spirit, dedication, humility and magnanimity - everything that Georgi Asparuhov-Gundy was. An example in the past, present and hopefully in the future. A lesson in love and all other virtues. We laughed, we cried, I especially cried...a lot. A palette of emotions. Even if you're not a football fan, even if you don't like watching sports, just go watch the movie - it'll teach you a lot, and why not make me love football. Before he was a footballer, Gundy was a great man.

The Beauty of Life, Love and Football

Knowing the life story of the legendary Bulgarian footballer Georgi Asparuhov, I knew this was going to be a tough movie to watch. Emotionally, the film takes you from the bottom to the top and all the way back down - a true masterpiece that made it impossible to hold back both the laughter and the tears. It is so much more than a movie about football, so much more than a film about Gundi. It is a tale of life during one of the most controversial periods in Bulgarian history, which has, in many ways, shaped our society today. It is a beautiful love story, an intriguing family saga, a clash between the poor and the rich and hands down the best Bulgarian movie I have seen.

Arguably the BEST Bulgarian film ever made

I am no PFC Levski fan, as a matter of fact I am not Bulgarian football fan at all. However I am a cinema fan , lover and phil. This is the first even Bulgarian production that i don't see even 1 actor to "over play" his role. Amazing cinematographic masterpiece, story telling and script. Pavel Ivanov is brilliant and genius as ever, he deserves a world stage! Ivan and Andrey, this time you really, really have done it. This is it, peak of your careers, cherish and live this moment. Alexanrda Svilenova, GENIUS role! I really want to mention Stoyan Radev, after Pavel and Alexanra, this was a world class performance, you won't go unnoticed! Much love to all the crew and actors, you will be all remembered, next to the big names of our cinema in the past prior 1990. Thank you, al!

More than just a movie.

Honestly it is really hard to write down anything about the movie. Such a mix of emotions. From laugh and happiness, through inspiration and pride, to the love and the pain.

It is not a movie about football or for football fans. It is a movie about the endless love for the family, the loved one and for the passion doing what you love. It is a movie about the values and beliefs of a generation that we must learn from. It is a movie about the example we all should follow. It is our duty.

And the end ... oh the end is ... Tears in the eyes, lump in your throat, countless thoughts in your head, and only one question- Why???

Gundi is eternal!

Must watch

"Gundi - Legend of Love" is a captivating and emotionally resonant film that tells the extraordinary true story of Bulgarian football legend Georgi Asparuhov and his unwavering love for his wife Lita. The film's performances are nothing short of remarkable, with the actors delivering nuanced and authentic portrayals of their characters. Asparuhov's charisma and on-field brilliance are captured with infectious energy, while Lita's strength and resilience in the face of adversity are both inspiring and heartbreaking.

Absolutely a must-see film that beautifully captures a timeless love story. The actors deliver exceptional performances, bringing their characters to life with authenticity and emotion. The film's production is nearly flawless, with stunning visuals. The entire team behind this masterpiece deserves immense for creating such a memorable cinematic experience.

Surprisingly Astonishing

So recently this movie broke the all time record with the interest and sold out pre-sale tickets for a premiere bulgarian production. I've watched it on day 1 of the premiere in cinemas in Sofia, Bulgaria on 18.10.2024.

Before that I've watched the trailers. I looked up the budget. I researched the actors. I was prepared for it. Or was I?

Usually I am not optimistic for the bulgarian film industry. I adore my cinema, not the bulgarian one. Movies are usually really... boring. Bad acting, bad plot, overall bad experience, especially if you are looking for a quality time spent with friends and family.

This one is simply exclusive. Really rare to find a bulgarian movie with that high production value and such a captivating plot. Actors are great. Storytelling is great. I won't spoil anything else, just go watch it and see for yourself. I had a wonderful time in a full packed movie theatre. Personally for me, this is one of the best bulgarian productions ever created, if not the best.

One of the best Bulgarian movies in the past decade

There are rarely any good Bulgarian movies but this is definitely one of them. Following the beautiful but tragic story of Georgi Asparuhov this movie takes us on a journey through the past where life can be both simple and hard at the same time. It shows us that even in communist Bulgaria football talents at the likes of Asparuhov can stand out. The passion for football and the love for the special person in your life is presented in such a great way by the two main actors - Pavel Ivanov (Gundi) and Alexandra Svilenova (Lita). Also let's not forget that the real Velichka Markova portrayed by Alexandra is also part of the production and this makes the movie as genuine as it could be regarding historical details. Everything related to production and writing is on a such high level that it may as well compete with other non-Bulgarian movies with a much higher budget.

Incredible

This film combines more than anything honesty, dedication to the people, love for football, family and the people. This film is for both young and old, both women and football fans. It is not only for left-handed players, it is for everyone. In it we can see the humanity of a successful person from 0 who has reached the top, fighting against the state and remaining faithful to the family, the people and the homeland despite all the difficulties of the state with which he is fighting. You can't feel how 2 and a half hours pass, this movie can and will clear everyone who watches it. Incredible. I highly recommend watching.

Raunchy Bulgarian Movie

I didn't walk into the theatre with high hopes for this movie and by the time the title had been shown I knew i'd be in for an interesting time. The acting itself is at best mediocre, there are scenes where I almost feel like the actors are reading off of live cue cards or are simply just not actors at all. The story sort of saves the film in the sense that I did actually learn about Georgi Asparuhov and the deep dive into political and psychological blackmail is also not covered in a slow or bad way at all. Besides the middle and end portion of the film the rest was an incredibly slow, non needed borefest, which covered his love and village life as if it played any importance whatsoever to the rest of the story. The football scenes are an absolute joke to watch and the "incredible computer crowd modelling" looks like it was made by a 14 year old in some backhand modelling software. The ending wasn't too bad but in my opinion they could of taken a different approach but I also suppose that I shouldn't expect anything original from a Bulgarian scriptwriter so overall its fine.

I can't really say they did a horrible job with this, and the 6/10 I'm giving them is accounting for the low budget and of course because it's a Bulgarian film. But otherwise I wouldn't watch this.

A Visually Polished but Overrated Disappointment

The only thing that stands out is the cinematography, but the forced attempt to mimic American filmmaking is laughable. The script is weak, the story lacks depth, and conflicts appear out of nowhere with no real buildup and never properly develop. The pacing is inconsistent, making it hard to stay engaged, and emotional moments feel hollow and unearned. Both the acting and dialogue feel awkward and unconvincing, often coming across as wooden or forced. The actors not only deliver unnatural performances but also tend to overact, making the experience even worse. Instead of drawing the viewer in, the film constantly reminds you of its flaws, making it difficult to take seriously. A frustrating and overrated watch.

Encaptivating emotional roller-coaster!

This was a movie I knew nothing about, nothing about Gundi, his life story, or football...but oh boy, seeing the trailer left me hanging and hooked to know more. I have seen a few Bulgarian movies and TV series and some have their best moments, but this movie was another level. The actors playing, the emotions they poured through the screen, the laughter, the anticipation, the tears they brought to the public were all so powerful.

I heard the movie was 2hrs and 45 minutes and though to myself 'Gosh that's long' wasn't sure what to expect, but this movie was so moreish that those 3 hours in the cinema flew by and I wanted more! A love story for football, true love for passion. A love story for one modern day Romeo and Juliette who made the impossible to be together, a story of support and selfless sacrifice. A love for the nation, for the country and for the people who believe in one common thing. That one thing that binds all people in the country and makes them equal. This is a love story on so many levels towards so many aspects of life and I recognised myself throughout.

Worth to watch not just once. Highly recommended.

A must watch

"Inspiring and emotional film, telling the story of the life of an exceptional person and world-class footballer. A story about love, strength of spirit, and standing by one's principles until the last breath. The will to withstand government pressure at the time, refusing to break and become a state security agent. A person worthy of example and emulation! Exceptional acting by the entire cast in the film. Skillful portrayal of the characters by the actors to the extent that the viewer feels they know the main characters in the film. Brilliant acting, screenplay, and direction. A film deserving to be watched by several generations of viewers."

The movie like no other

Gundi: Legend of love is a great movie that combines great actor play, amazing story of the Best Bulgarian football player in Bulgaria in dark times of comunism. It is a must watch from football fans not only in Bulgaria. The movie focus is love story. So the film can be watched by everybody, because is very emotional, with great music and deply touching. You will like the characters in the movie and will be brought by time machine to 1960 in Eastern Europe and especially in Bulgaria. You will see ho talent and humanity can overcome the limit of time and space. I highgly recommend the movie to be watched. It will be great experience. I do hope that will be valued in Oscar ceremony for international movie. Just watch it!

Magnificent!!!

Football, love, system.... A story about a legendary football player in Bulgaria, and something more... A really nice movie about the life in socialistic Bulgaria. Football, passion, love! There is a lot of everything for everybody! Just see the movie, every single second from the 2 hours and 45 minutes worth it. Probably the best, or for sure one of the best bulgarian movies of all time! You don't have to be e football fan to see it. There is more than enoght cinematographic value, than the football scenes in it. The film has allready broke every single record for an opening weekend in Bulgaria. One thing for sure: taka a lot of handkerchiefs, you gonna need them!

Breathtaking

Gundi - Legend of Love is a breathtaking cinematic experience that masterfully blends love, passion, socialistic culture and football. Amazing sport scenes, however they werent the main plot of the movie. The movie followed the love story of Gundi and Lita and it did this job perfectly. The lead performances are powerful, and the film's emotional depth is unforgettable. A true masterpiece that redefines Bulgarian cinema. Pavel Ivanov and Aleksandra Svilenova played their characters amazing. Their love didnt feel forced they had amazing chemistry between them. Spoiler: You will cry if you decide to watch this movie.

A Journey That Left Me Speechless

10/10

I was taken to watch this film by a Bulgarian friend, and honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect. What followed was one of the most emotionally intense cinema experiences I've had in recent memory. From the first twenty minutes, I found myself completely absorbed in the story, and the nearly three-hour runtime flew by in what felt like moments.

The love story at the heart of this film hit me harder than I expected. I found myself laughing, crying, and holding my breath along with the characters. Even though I'm not Bulgarian and wasn't familiar with Gundi's story before this, the raw humanity and emotion transcended any cultural barriers. The relationship between Gundi and Lita felt so real and honest that it was impossible not to be moved by their journey.

What surprised me most was how the film affected me even though I'm not a football fan. This isn't just a sports movie - it's a story about love, character, and standing up for what you believe in. The portrayal of life under communist rule, the struggle between staying true to oneself and facing pressure from authorities, all of it resonated on a deeply human level.

By the end, I was emotionally drained but in the best possible way. Hours after leaving the theater, I found myself still thinking about the film, processing its impact. The story gripped me so much that I actually went home and spent hours watching documentaries about Georgi Asparuhov, wanting to learn more about this remarkable figure and his impact on Bulgarian history and culture.

This is more than just another movie - it's an experience that reminds us why we go to cinema in the first place. It deserves every bit of international recognition it can get. If you have the chance to see it, don't hesitate. Just remember to bring tissues - you're going to need them.

Outstanding production!!

I can't believe it - this is one of the best productions ever made in Bulgaria. I must say - this film is for everyone. I only can recommend it further. From the beginning till the end we have one perfect composition of moments and history. We have a romantic story and socialistic Bulgaria. We have young actors and we have older ones. We have 3 hours of perfect cinematography - you literally cannot feel the time from the time you enter the cinema to the moment you are left there and the movie ends, you are there in your seat and you are filled with different emotions. This! This is a movie for an Oscar!

Movie which makes you speechless

When you start watching the movie, you can't help but feel the emotion that overwhelms you in the first minutes. With the progress of the film, you feel that you have been transported to the 60s/70s of the last century, as if with a time machine. The film is so strong and impressive, a story of love, bravery, kindness; it touches you so much that it makes you feel like you too are part of this adventure. Prepare to be blown away by the professionalism and precision with which the entire team of directors, producers, actors and many others have handled this film and this legend. A legend because Georgi Asparuhov - Gundi is an example for young and old, then and now, how a person should be humble, dignified and preserved no matter how difficult it is and no matter what obstacles he faces.

Good, but marred by the same issue as all other Bulgarian movies

Gundi is one of the biggest Bulgarian productions in recent years, with a lot of money spent for marketing, so it generated a lot of hype before its premiere in Bulgaria.

The good things about the film are the cinematography, where you can see the effort that went into the lighting and the camera work. Most of the shots looked slicked and well-composed. The art direction, costumes, props - they looked convincing and you can see how the big budget played its role there. Also a lot of the sport scenes used computer graphics, that for the most part looked great. The acting of the two main characters was generally a step above what we normally expect from a Bulgarian film.

However, some aspects of the film really bring it down, and these are problems found in most Bulgarian fiction films:

The writing was very basic at times, with unconvincing or fake sounding dialogue. The editing was problematic. For a three-hour movie there were many scenes that felt redundant or repetitive, the pace was too slow in moments where it needed to pick up. The first scene and the first 10 minutes of the film don't work at all.

In terms of direction and script, for me the film felt quite schizophrenic. It was trying to be love story, then a sports thriller, then a political drama. At times it seemed it was told from the point of view of the female character, but in other moments it felt autobiographical.

Overall, it is one of the good Bulgarian movies in recent years, mainly for it's technical competency. It looks pleasant and watchable. But it's a long way to go in terms of writing, editing and direction to be one of the better Bulgarian films I have seen. 6/10.

A good sports drama but also a missed opportunity

Overall, this is a good movie based on a true, heartbreaking story. The picture is well-shot, the actors deliver a decent performance, the story is consistent. It is also a nostalgic fairy tale about the romantic times of football when passion for the game and pure talent were more important than complex formations and defensive tactics.

Yet, the film fails to to tell a bigger and probably more important story. During his time Gundi was not simply a beloved football player who scored important goals, he became a social phenomenon. And the main reason is not only Gundi's charisma and the popularity of football but also the state of the Bulgarian society in the early 60s. Those were dark times after a decade of Stalinist communistic terror. The free will of people was crushed, fear was everywhere, the shadow of state security was a constant presence. Levski, the team for which Gundi played, was considered an alternative to the communist flagship army club CSKA. Infamously, an army general once said "Not all Levski fans are fascists but all fascists are facists". (During these times a "fascist" was everyone who disagreed with the communist regime.) Gundi with his skills and goals was someone the communist party could not control. His pure talent and affable nature contrasted the vengeful mediocrity of the communist party elite. When Levski beat CSKA 7:2, this caused such a shock wave that the club Levski was merged with the communist police club Spartak and renamed to Levski-Spartak.

Bulgaria, as shown in the film, is too European, too normal, too sunny. The state security agents look rather ridiculous than scary, like inept blackmailers. You almost feel nostalgic for the old times when life was simpler and people more real.

In summary, despite several strong aspects of the film, I was rather disappointed with the missed opportunity to tell a deeper and more important story.
