It is a rainy night when a policeman responses to a call from a man who has not seen his neighbour for some days and is worried. With only a lamp for company, the policeman enters the dark and silent property.
Screened at a horror festival in the UK, this old-school chiller is a nice break from the gore fests which often make up the horror short film genre. Instead this short is all about the shadows and what unknown beings might be within them. This plays out pretty well for the most part, with the limited light, and dark, creaky unknown of the house being a key character in the slightly chilling effect. So in terms of building a sense of tension, it is pretty effective, if hardly unique. The problem is that, as it builds, it doesn't really have a great place to build to. The conclusion to the tension and mystery is a little creepy but the manner in which it is delivered is so very matter-of-fact, that it really robs the ending of power. The narrated conclusion seems pat and disinterested, and really didn't fit with what had gone before.
A shame, as the tension and old-school creepiness had been well done, just for it to have a rather so-so and unsatisfying conclusion.
