Fremantle profits were up by nearly a quarter last year but the much-vaunted €3B ($3.3B) turnover target appears to have been pushed back indefinitely.

For full year 2024, The Poor Things super-indie’s adjusted Ebita shot up by 23% to €171M, its highest to date. Fremantle-owner Rtl put this down to “significantly lower overhead costs and the first-time profit contribution from Asacha Media Group,” which the outfit acquired at the start of last year at a cost of €200M when the acquisition of 80% of Singapore’s Beach House Pictures was included. Adjusted Ebita margin was up by 1.5 percentage points to 7.6%, with a target of 9% set for 2025.

Rtl pointed to 2024 success stories including Oscar-winner Poor Things, hit Amazon YA series Maxton Hall, Kim Kardashian-produced doc Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar and U.S. entertainment smashes like Family Feud and The Farmer Wants A Wife.

Charles Dance is set to play Italian artist Michaelangelo in new BBC docu-drama “Renaissance: The Blood and The Beauty.”

Dance’s casting in the three-part series came as the BBC unveiled its arts and culture slate across television and radio at a dedicated event in London on Wednesday evening. “Renaissance: The Blood and The Beauty” is a co-commission with PBS exploring an era of violence and power politics that produced some of the Western world’s greatest works of art.

Other highlights on the slate include Simon Schama’s take on the culture wars in “The History of Us,” the return of archaeological series “Civilisations” with a new iteration tentatively titled “Civilisations: Rise and Fall,” and a docu-drama about Jane Austen to mark the 250th anniversary of her birth next year. “Jane Austen: Rise of a Genius” will include interviews with writers, actors, and biographers.

Exclusive: Fremantle has picked up global distribution rights to Hell Jumper, the BBC’s upcoming doc series about a British aid worker who died in Ukraine.

Produced by Clarkson’s Farm maker Expectation and revealed by Deadline last year, Hell Jumper uses first-person footage to follow a group of volunteers who set out to save lives during the war.

Chris Parry headed out in a white van with friends and took to TikTok and Instagram to show footage of their daring rescues, but he and another volunteer, Andrew Bagshaw, were tragically killed trying to save an elderly woman trapped in her home.

Fremantle will sell outside the UK as the show gets set to launch on the BBC in the coming weeks. The producer-distributor’s international senior acquisitions boss Céire Clark described Hell Jumper as a “remarkable tale of resilience.”

Emily Jeal takes on the newly-created role of Head of Feature Documentaries. Her hire is partly intended to help free up time for CEO Nick Southgate, Managing Director David Moulton and Creative Director Hamish Fergusson to focus attention on limited and talent-led returnable TV series.

Jeal played a key role in developing Super/Man, the heartwrenching story about Reeves’ life-changing disability that attracted plenty attention at Sundance and was acquired by Warner, while she also worked across Passion’s Kim Kardashian-produced Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar.

Speaking exclusively to Deadline, Moulton said Super/Man was never a “slam dunk project” but Jeal’s “creativity and tenacity” during a lengthy development period was crucial to getting funders on board.

Fremantle label Strong has produced Sense of Attraction and the show will be shopped to potential buyers in the capital in a fortnight’s time.

In Sense of Attraction, singletons try to find true love using only two senses. But they can’t use the two senses at the same time, so when they see each other they can’t speak and when they speak they can’t see one another.

The show has shades of Netflix hit Love is Blind, in which single men and women become engaged before they have even seen each other. That smash format has aired for six seasons on Netflix and been remade in a number of territories.
