Keeping its secrets guarded and living off the shocks of its knife-edge turns, Chime sees Kiyoshi Kurosawa covering more than familiar ground with plenty of desolate moodscapes, recognisable for anyone with even a cursory knowledge of his past output. However, there is something particularly chilling about the oppressive mundanity here, a mundanity to which Koichi Furuya's digital cinematography adds another layer of dread. It's a dreary madness that slowly begins seeping into the life of its character. Despite its skeletal form and brief runtime, the film ends on a fascinating rupture; the previously ambient evil becoming tangible shifts, terrifyingly, within the realm of possibility and the suggestion of this curse being made concrete becomes overbearing. Relishing in the awful psychological residues of violence while suggesting a lucid dream, the kind of fragmented nightmare you are grateful to wake up from but just as terrified to leave so unresolved.

Let's get things straight: this short is not for everyone. Perhaps even more so than feature-length works of Kiyoshi Kurosawa. It's mundane, it doesn't care about answering questions or following the traditional rules of storytelling. You shouldn't try to decode it from the point of everyday rationality or even the traditional cinema structure.
Instead, the movie is interested into raising an issue that was already present The Cure, updating it and setting the mood that compliments the idea. From my point of view, it's not so much a movie about depression, but a movie about the virus of violence that infects those who're troubled with their lives. As the movie progresses, we feel that the virus of violence spreads more and more. I think in a current day and age it's a really important idea, because sometimes I feel like the violence starts capturing minds of more and more people even in their everyday life.
The lonely and mundane tone complements this idea by suggesting on how this disconnected, distant and superficial relationships complement the development of the virus.
So yeah, I don't think it's the best of Kurosawa, but still, I feel like it's an interesting and important short movie. Just please, don't try to watch it as a conventional horror movie or even a conventional movie in general.

Best part here: It's only 45 minutes. I can't even imagine the horror and the pain i would face if it was longer. And i don't mean, in a good way. Look, i respect Asian horror and there are some great movies. Of course, there are some great movies overall in which some things were unexplained. Some times, ambiguity is even necessary, all the mysteries don't need to be solved.
But, this was too much. This is so cryptic and enigmatic that made me don't care at all, i mean, who are those people and why they suffer? Why should i invest? I am not even sure it's cryptic, maybe there is nothing beneath the surface, maybe it's just a mess, this is too random to be called an enigma.
I gave it 5 stars because it's well acted and well directed. Visually, it's good, i can't rate lower a film when so many aspects of film making are above average.
But, that's it.

Unsettling from start to finish. Despite how heavy this film is on mystery, there is enough to latch onto and to make your own interpretations from.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Chime" is a chilling 45-minute psychological horror film that masterfully blends mundane settings with a growing sense of dread. It tells the story of a middle-aged school teacher who is haunted by a recurring sound, a chime, that fills him with a strange sense of foreboding. As the film progresses, the teacher's life begins to unravel, and he becomes increasingly obsessed with the source of the sound and its unsettling implications.
Kurosawa's signature style is on full display in "Chime," with its deliberate pacing, unsettling atmosphere, and focus on the psychological state of its protagonist. The film's minimalist approach, with its sparse dialogue and focus on visual storytelling, creates a sense of unease and leaves much to the viewer's imagination. The sound design is particularly effective, with the recurring chime serving as a constant reminder of the unseen threat that looms over the teacher.
The film's ending is ambiguous and open to interpretation, leaving viewers to ponder the true meaning of the chime and its impact on the teacher's life. Some may interpret it as a descent into madness, while others may see it as a reflection of the teacher's own inner turmoil and anxieties.
"Chime" is a powerful and thought-provoking film that stays with you long after the credits roll. Its exploration of fear, paranoia, and the fragility of the human mind is both unsettling and unforgettable.

There are movies that should have never been made, and "Chime" (2024) is one of them. I do not know how producers spend their money in a garbage like that. I usually like to write a small summary of the flick in my review, but the use thebogofeternalstench wrote one named "Utter garbage" that perfectly describes this crap, and I do not dare to write mine. The good point is the running time of only 45 minutes, the best that this movie offers to the viewers. Why is it so overrated in IMDb is the greatest question about this movie? Payola? Probably. Or maybe friends of director/writer, cast and crew wishing to promote this garbage. Last but not the least, the director's last name is disrespectful to the great Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. My vote is one (awful).

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's latest psychological horror is a masterful exercise in suspense and terror.
Provided you can get onboard with its enigmatic (and nearly incomprehensible) plot, there's much to enjoy here for fans of the director. The running time is short (only 45 minutes), making this something of a compact version of Kurosawa's usual, subtle horror filmmaking. There's a lot of atmosphere and intrigue present throughout, but little to no answers to some of the film's central questions.
While this is certainly a violent little film, it's not focused on gore, but rather its capability to disturb by mere suggestion. It's pretty great to see Kurosawa back at directing unsettling films that turn the mundane into terrifying, and Chime shows he's still got some interesting ideas to share with the rest of us.
Recommended.

Renowned Japanese horror filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa returns with a distinctive and chilling addition to the genre. The story centers on Matsuoka, a former chef who conducts cooking classes while he seeks new employment. One day, a student voices his distress over an inexplicable sound that he cannot escape, which appears to be altering him internally, leading to a loss of self-control and even violent outbursts. The particularly unsettling aspect of this noise is its ability to propagate from one individual to another without any forewarning, rendering each moment of the film fraught with unpredictability and tension.
In a mere 45 minutes, Kurosawa employs a myriad of techniques from his extensive repertoire, crafting a film that achieves a level of creepiness and intensity in just a few scenes that surpasses the efforts of many horror films released this year.
"Chime" does not conform to the typical jump-scare format; rather, it evokes a lingering sense of dread that may resurface days later, leaving viewers with an unsettling image from the film etched in their minds. Watch this film of a filmmaker that's at the top of his game!

I thought I'd give it a try. A 6.8 on the IMDB is pretty good for a horror movie, and I am a vivid Horror fan, but boy was I duped! It started OK. A Japanese town is shown in quite a depressive looking view. But then...... a knive, and another knive, and lots of cans in plastic bags. Why are there so many cans in plastic bags? I just didn't get it. Did I miss the story somewhere. The movie is 45 minutes, so is the story in the missing minutes. What happened? Why. A teacher who hears a noise, am I deaf. What noise. What the f.... did happen in this movie. Yes, a beautiful tree outside the building. Oh that's the end....what happened. What was I watching?
Its like half a movie. And it was already way too slow. It does weird things to play with your mind but for way too long. Its also very predictable & simple to understand. (SPOILERS (kinda): Its akin to a zombie infection). Now you know everything & why everything is happening. No need to even think about it. Once you see that & realize whats happening, everything starts to feel average & kinda slow & boring.
This film shows weird scenes in order to show how creepy it is but its not really that creepy & takes too long & wastes your time in this already 45 mins short movie. It did build up some tension though. But honestly i would say this movie is like one of those scary youtube shorts but they're like just 5-10 mins & way more impactful & entertaining than this silly crap of a film.
If you're like a new film student & did a short like this, then its actually impressive & you'd be seen as a talented student. But as a movie, you're setting a low bar with this.
I think the director actually wanted to waste some time in his life trying to make this thing. He just wanted to spend time recording with his new camera & making his neighbors act in this movie & they all were just having fun doing this on a Saturday night lol. Pretty much. Avoid this.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa, once again, is able to craft a suspenseful, slow-paced, and psychological story using his explorative direction choices on the exercise of horror, dread, and terror.
For 45 minutes, it's atmosphere and it's subtle uses of horror and tension is mundane, yet, purposeful in the good ways to crawl right into your skin. What Kurosawa is great with his horror works is that he doesn't use much gore and rather uses the terrifying atmosphere and concept to craft the dreariness and creepiness within his narratives, and this short succeeds with it. Provided with solid performances and a good pacing.
If you like Kurosawa, I recommend it.

I watched the movie without looking at its length or plot. The fact that it was in the horror category was enough for me to watch it. It had started well. But when it ended abruptly in the 45th minute, I thought maybe they were trying a new style. I thought it would continue afterwards. But the movie ended abruptly. There was no development or conclusion. Of course, when these did not happen, there was no plot either. I am sure that when the movie ends, all viewers will ask "so what happened now?"
It is not an art film or anything like that. I have seen many movies where the conclusion is left to the viewer, but this is the first time I have seen a movie where the plot is left to the viewer.

Chime: Japanese horror film which is lean and mean, clocks in at 45 minutes. Matsuoka is a teacher at a cookery school, gets some oddball students, they're just amateurs, So he's not that shocked when a student, Tashiro complains about hearing a chime noise. But Tashiro goes on to say that half of his brain is a machine and fatally stabs himself in the neck with a cleaver to display his brain. Then Matsuoka starts to hear the chime and tragic circumstances ensue. Things are in free fall, the chime gets louder, more people hear and react violently. Matsuoka's family, an incompetent detective, Matsuoka's attempts to get a job as a chef all add to a sense of strangeness. It's also implied that Matsuoka has committed other crimes. You'll mull this film over long after the credits toll. Maybe it should have been longer. Written and Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. 7.5/10.

Its soooo bad u will finish the movie and dont know anything or what happend or why does this happend there is so many Q that didnt answer in the movie.
The worst movie I have ever seen in my life. There is no story, no life, just slaughter for no reason. I am insulting to the mother of the bad movie. Even the questions they asked were not answered. A bad movie in every sense of the word, even the reviews. Believe me from the staff and no one is doing the work. This stranger told you that it was slaughtered for no reason and no news. May God bless the Burma neighborhood. Their head is the trumpet of the aunt of the amphibian, with the legs of a movie on YouTube called Tumbak, for the soul of lovers. Watch it. It is better than eggs. That bad thing was with you. The aunt of the amphibian has suffered a setback.
Give me back the 45 min its sooo waste of time.
