Best Donnie Yen Film Since Flash Point

This is definitely the best Donnie Yen film since the classic action masterpiece Flash point. What make it so great is the phenomenal cast of this film, instead of having just one Donnie Yen going solo and all action pack, this film takes the better approach of using many great actors from HK (Chi Lam, Kent Cheng, Francis Ng etc) to take care of the story, dialogue and leveling this film to be more than just an action blockbuster. In this film you can sort of see Donnie Yen age is catching up, slightly reduce the amount of action he does on scene compare to previous movies. However, he also seems to adapt from the his experience in the the Hollywood such as John Wick, the equaliser etc, that being much more environmental with his fighting style, this is fantastic when mixing it up with his own style of fighting. Also great to see he finally get rid of overly do the wing chun and be back to the MMA approach. Despite reducing the amount of action he performs on screen, the quality has just been top notch with everything he shows. The beauty of grappling is second to none in movie history and confident to say no other action choreography can match Donnie Yen's design (99% of flashy choreography in other film falls into the fake and overly use of wire category) While the grappling in this film is solid and realistic while remain eye pleasing just like Flash point. I have been inspired and trained mma for more than a decade by now, unrealistic action design is always cringe when I watch it. But if you know martial arts and grappling, this film paint a beautiful picture with is. Apart from Fash point, even Donnie's SPL and Special ID couldn't captured that master performance. This film is the first that is ever close to flash point level and definitely a better all around film. Here to say Donnie Yen's stunt team are all amazing and truly makes his work shines by a 1000 folds. And we know hard it to make something this beautiful in an action film.

The Prosecutor is Fantastic

Donnie Yen is truly one of the greatest box office draws in the world. His contributions to martial arts and action films is immeasurable. His star status transcends continents, language, and generations. In his latest film release his skills as both a dramatic actor and martial arts action hero are on full display. This film is based upon unbelievable real events.

The Prosecutor is unique in that it could have easily been done as a courtroom drama or a martial arts action film. However, the filmmakers, Yen included, decided to combine the two to make a courtroom drama that is also a martial arts action film. This highly risky gamble really paid dividends in the final result; this film is fantastic.

Yen plays the lead character; a police officer turned Prosecutor whose overarching tenant is Justice, not a mere conviction for political sake. He goes against the establishment in his pursuit of justice for a young man wrongfully convicted to a twenty (27) year sentence for drug trafficking.

The story not only puts him at odds with his own Department, whose characters are adeptly played by the Kent Cheng and Francis Ng, but also with the real drug traffickers he is looking to uncover.

Yen is also the Director on this one and he does a very good job balancing the drama inside the courtroom with the high flying, gritty, martial arts action that takes place in the police chase scenes, and the other fight scenes that The Prosecutor has no shortage of. The courtroom scenes are as good as any courtroom drama films or television productions you will see. Julian Cheung's performance in this film is also notable.

The martial arts fight choreography in this film are first rate. Yen has made a career of consistently innovating and reaching new heights of action choreography in his films. The unique and visually stunning fight scenes in this film make for a highly watchable martial arts action film. Yen never rests on the body of work that has catapulted him to stardom. The fight sequences in The Prosecutor are memorable. The climactic scene on the train is an homage to Sean Connery's From Russia With Love, and it is spectacular.

This international martial action drama is distributed by Well Go USA and is in Cantonese with English subtitles.

The film uniquely respects the two very different genres it lives in and the viewer is winner in this successful merger. We highly recommend The Prosecutor as a great way to start the New Year.

This works because Donnie Yen's Prosecutor needs more than his superb kungfu skills to bring justice.

When I saw the trailer to the movie, I was hyped because Donnie Yen's character looked desperate and the title suggests he needs more than his expert martial arts skills to succeed. This is what makes the movie work. In all of Donnie Yen's movie, you know he can use his fists and kicks to solve problems, so to raise the stakes, not only should there be a formidable nemesis but something that even Yen's superb fighting skills will not suffice. In The Prosecutor, Donnie Yen plays a former cop on his first case as Prosecutor and decides to investigate a possible framing of an innocent teen. Of course, he has to fight multiple henchmen and there are great fight scenes but, he still needs to find evidence and keep people alive. So that the challenge is in ensuring people live because Donnie's character can always overcome his enemies but not everyone is him. For me, balancing the action with the story worked to raise the stakes. While there are prolonged dialogues with very in your face lecturing about the duty of a Prosecutor, you can feel Yen's character's desperation because he can't do it alone. Furthermore, Yen is also emphasizing his age. His character admits he can't run after thieves anymore, and we see him taking beatings, but all the fight scenes are still intense and brutal. Yen can still move fast and deal powerful blows. However , playing and aging character, his fights are more tactical and employs use of the surroundings a lot. Yen, being the director, also allows his co star to shine in a few fight scenes. This shows that he is generous as an action star too. I would love to see more movies like this from him, where he is not only physically challenged but intellectually or emotionally challenged. Moreover, Yen consistently tries new techniques in his movies. There is the use of POV camera, to wide-screen shot over a rooftop, to the cramped space of a subway train. It's like he is using his experience in John Wick to use in the movie.

Donnie knows how to handle action

The Prosecutor is an interesting film, as it's actually a legal-focused thriller first and foremost, with the martial arts action coming second. I found this blend of genres to work surprisingly well, and I give Donnie props for trying something different. The movie features a phenomenal opening action sequence and an incredible climactic one too. When it comes to the action scenes, you definitely won't be disappointed.

However, the legal aspect-which makes up the majority of the film-is unfortunately a bit lacklustre and predictable. I wish the courtroom scenes had explored more of the complexities of the justice system and delivered more intense drama. It didn't help that the villain was incredibly one-dimensional.

Still, it's an entertaining action movie overall, and this film does show that Donnie knows how to handle action.

Ip Man, this time as a prosecutor!

Honestly, I went to the cinema to see Donnie Yen in this movie and thoroughly enjoyed the action scenes, kung fu, and the incredibly beautiful cinematography, especially the first-person perspective.

However, while the movie excels in its action moments, it falls short in terms of storytelling, feeling slow and somewhat trivial. Many scenes may even come across as boring.

The biggest highlight and positive aspect of the movie is Donnie Yen's performance. Over time, Donnie Yen has gained a more comprehensive understanding of his cinematic identity. His increased believability and comfort with genre clichés and traditions make action fans easily believe not only that they are watching a reliable and capable star performing a role in a moderately memorable film, but also affirm the social persona of a steadfast hero.

A solid Donnie Yen action film that balances both story and fight choreography, with a great supporting cast.

The Prosecutor is a legal crime action thriller directed by and starring Donnie Yen, reteaming with Ip Man producer Raymond Wong, and features a star-studded ensemble cast.

While it is not on par with the iconic status of the Ip Man film series, it is a modern Ip Man in spirit: Donnie Yen beating justice into a lawless world. Different robes, same job!

In its promotional trailer, it was baffling to see Donnie Yen, presumably the prosecutor in the title, holding a revolver running through a subway car like a police officer.

How would the story explain his fighting abilities and gun training? It's embarrassing to admit, but this ridiculous little hairball intrigued me for a month leading up to the film's release.

After a violent drug bust gone wrong, police officer Fok Chi-ho is disappointed with the criminal system, and quits the police force to become a government prosecutor...The answer I was looking for!

It was this precise moment ten minutes into the film, my expectations were firmly set. There was no use thinking how long it would take for a career policeman to quit, attend law school, and switch immediately to being a government prosecutor. Nor would I think about whether the film will portray the court of law authentically. It's not that kind of movie.

Under this mindset, The Prosecutor is an action-packed and entertaining popcorn film that's worth seeing once.

The ensemble cast, including Michael Hui, Francis Ng, Ray Lui, Julian Cheng, Kent Cheng and Lau Kong provide great support and keep the dramatic scenes engaging. There wasn't any feeling of waiting for the dialogue scenes to end so the fights can commence.

In fact, Francis Ng steals the movie in a hilarious reportedly-improvised scene where he openly challenges Donnie Yen to a fistfight, which was so close to a fourth wall break (whio challenges Donnie Yen in a movie?) that it had me cackling for a whole minute.

Julian Cheng completely morphs as the refined salt-and-pepper-haired businessman villain, a role that would normally played by Michael Wong. Cheng stands out, but falls short of being awards worthy.

The action choreography by Donnie Yen's Stunt Team, is noticeably more audience-friendly and less brutal than Yen's past MMA-themed films, like SPL, Flashpoint and Special ID.

In the past, Donnie Yen's priorities as star and fight choreographer were set on showcasing martial arts authentically. Whether it was police, wuxia or comic book action, he strived to deliver a sense of martial arts realism, notably power.

I see a maturation in Donnie Yen in The Prosecutor.

The Prosecutor felt like a culmination of Donnie Yen's filmmaking experience being applied in full as a director, with Raymond Wong supplying him all the proper resources.

This time, Yen is working with cast and crew he's familiar with and integrating the drama and action together to deliver a solid movie, and not just a movie with great fight scenes.

This movie was Fire 🔥🔥

Powerful storyline and action scenes that had me sitting at the edge of my seat the whole movie. They took a complex plot and delve deep into the emotions that makes you question the judicial system and question right from wrong.

Great moments that made you chuckle, yet tug ant your emotional heart strings. Great flow, symbolism, and narrative throughout.

Like there's a scene where he puts down the wine and there's a balance scale showing how the situation is currently unjust.

At the end I couldn't believe Donnie Yen was the director and actor. I had watched the IP man series back in the day and was very impressed at how he pulled everything together. Super talented guy & Very impressed overall. I got to watch it overseas in Asia and excited that it's going to make its way in the US. Definitely worth watching in theaters when it comes out.

Typical Hong Kong Police and crime movie

This movie is a decent option for those looking for light entertainment, especially if you're bored and just want to kill some time while hanging out at the mall. It's the kind of film that requires very little effort or emotional investment, making it a casual watch rather than something truly memorable. However, it's hard to recommend it to anyone who has to go out of their way to see it, as the plot and execution feel overly conventional and lack originality.

The story plays it safe by sticking to the predictable formula of good triumphing over evil, which has been done countless times before. While Donnie Yen's fight scenes are undoubtedly a highlight, they can't fully compensate for the lack of depth in his performance. His acting feels stagnant, as though he hasn't challenged himself to grow or explore new dimensions in his craft. Once you strip away the action sequences, you're left with a film that feels hollow and uninspired, catering more to mainstream expectations than delivering something fresh or impactful.

In short, this is a film that serves its purpose as a casual time-filler but doesn't offer much more than that. If you're a die-hard Donnie Yen fan or just love action choreography, you might still find some enjoyment. Otherwise, it's a passable experience but not one worth going out of your way to watch.

Must watch movie

Very nice movie. I watched today in Toronto. It was house full. Good Direction and acting. I am not Chinese but I enjoy it. It is action packed movie and shows what lawyers do to become rich by misguiding innocent people. In Toronto, we have family lawyers that make millions by playing with people emotions.

Poor guy was misguided by the lawyer to accept guilty without explaining him that he will be in the jail for 27 years.

Movie has nice view of Hong Kong and few shots of remaining other communities. Fight seen was almost too much real.

In Toronto, it was hard to get the ticket of this movie. I am Indian Canadian and was better than Bolllywood movie and no songs.

A Donnie Yen Fantasy

I enjoy Donnie Yen. His track record in martial arts speaks for itself. He is showing his age in this film and the limited use of action recognizes that.

The rest of The Prosecutor left me both baffled and amazed.

As a crime/court drama, it is clumsy. Most of the courtroom dialogue falls far, far short of a mediocre Law and Order episode.

The most galling part of this movie, however, is how it tries to explain that the rule of law is what governs Hong Kong. I'll give the producers credit for trying to refashion this PRC-occupied city as a place where justice is based on real evidence and the police are diligent and honest. "Stay strong and keep true," the police chant, more than once.

Anyone who has seen the relentless crackdown on freedom in Hong Kong over the recent past knows better.

The Prosecutor: A Martial Arts Legal Thriller with Creative Flair but Legal Confusion

Donnie Yen brings his signature style and flair to The Prosecutor, a film that merges courtroom drama with martial arts action. While it delivers on innovative visuals and spectacular fight choreography, its legal intricacies might leave audiences-especially those unfamiliar with the differences between common and civil law-scratching their heads.

The film shines in its technical execution. Creative camera movements and first-person-shooter (FPS) sequences are used to great effect, pulling viewers directly into the action. The fighting choreography is, as expected from Donnie Yen, nothing short of epic. From fluid hand-to-hand combat to intense weapon fights, the action sequences are a masterclass in martial arts cinema. These moments are choreographed with precision and filmed with ingenuity, elevating them beyond typical action fare.

However, the legal drama is where the film falters. For audiences accustomed to the Indonesian legal system, the trial process in The Prosecutor can be baffling. The film's depiction of a prosecutor's journey to confront a supreme judge raises compelling ethical and moral questions, but the lack of clarity in its portrayal of legal norms might prompt viewers to do some research into the differences between legal systems.

One point of contention is the film's claim of being "inspired by a true story." While this lends an air of gravitas, it feels unnecessary-distracting from the narrative's standalone merits. Sometimes, a good story should simply be allowed to exist as fiction without the baggage of supposed real-world connections.

Despite these issues, the bravery of the protagonist to take on a figure of immense power, coupled with Yen's impeccable performance, creates a compelling emotional arc. The film also explores themes of justice and accountability, making it more than just an action-packed spectacle.

A Slick Fusion of Legal Mind Games and Action Thrills

The Prosecutor (2024) : Movie Review -

Donnie Yen, best known for his iconic role as Ip Man, returns in The Prosecutor-a gritty, action-packed legal thriller that dares to blend adrenaline-fueled sequences with courtroom drama. While we've seen our fair share of courtroom thrillers, few dare to mesh it with high-octane action the way this film does-and surprisingly, it works quite well. With a gripping, edge-of-the-seat narrative and intellectually charged legal mind games, The Prosecutor offers far more than your average legal or action drama. Yen not only throws punches but also throws light on the cracks within the justice system, encouraging introspection and awareness among viewers-particularly those who might one day stand before the gavel.

The story kicks off when a young man from an underprivileged background is falsely accused of drug trafficking, sending his life into chaos. Framed by a powerful and corrupt legal machinery, he becomes entangled in a system that is rigged against the innocent. Enter Fok Chi-ho (Donnie Yen), a former hotshot cop turned reclusive legal crusader, burdened by a haunting failure from his past. Compelled by a deep-rooted sense of justice, he returns to fight a system riddled with corruption, shadowy conspiracies, and moral decay. What unfolds is a tense battle involving institutional cover-ups, legal loopholes, and ruthless adversaries-both inside and outside the courtroom.

Clocking in at just under two hours, The Prosecutor maintains a relentless pace. Even in the quieter moments, the film keeps you riveted with tense legal exchanges and gripping investigations. Then come the explosive action set pieces-few but fiercely executed-and Donnie Yen delivers every punch, kick, and dramatic moment with commanding presence. Each action block feels earned and impactful. The climax delivers not only thrilling visuals but also a powerful social commentary. It speaks to younger generations and veteran members of the judiciary alike, nudging them to rethink justice beyond mere legal evidence. The final silent moment, showing the quiet joy on a judge's face, speaks louder than any words could-it's a rare cinematic scream for justice that only the emotionally tuned-in will fully appreciate.

Donnie Yen is in top form, leading the film with a mix of emotional gravitas and kinetic energy. His courtroom monologue in the finale isn't lengthy, but it lands with weight, reflecting the journey his character undertakes. Julian Cheung is a surprise package and owns every second of his screen time. Michael Hui, portraying the judge, lends genuine credibility to his role, while Francis Ng as the chief prosecutor brings grit and gravity. MC Cheung Tin-fu brings youthful energy to the narrative, and Lau Kong offers a veteran presence with a memorable performance. Mandy Wang impresses with her dual-shaded character-beauty, brains, and betrayal all rolled into one. The ensemble cast adds terrific support across the board.

Visually, The Prosecutor is striking. The cinematography captures both the glossy cityscape and gritty courtroom drama with finesse. Li Ka-wing's editing ensures a tight narrative that rarely lags, although it remains to be seen whether the emotional impact holds up on a second viewing. The background score is decent overall, though it shines brightest in the climactic rooftop sequence, where it adds tension and cinematic heft. That top view was insane! Edmond Wong's sharp script and Donnie Yen's focused direction result in a potent mix of action, intellect, and commentary. In conclusion, The Prosecutor is more than just another action flick-it's a well-rounded thriller with substance. From fast-paced action and legal intrigue to emotional depth and a subtle call for justice reform, it delivers a thoroughly satisfying cinematic experience. Watch it if you're ready to go beyond standard genre fare and want something that stimulates both the mind and the senses.

Very Heavy Film. But once you understand, it's Gold!

I like this film, In fact Donnie is My IDOL. There are a lot of things I like here, From The Music, The Fighting, The Camera, The Acting, good. But yes, This film is kind of "Heavy" as if It's hard to understand for many people. This is politics, the injustice, a very complicated case. Butttttt once you get it, the plot, the case, It's just, Cool.

(JUST SKIP THIS PART IF YOU WANT!! THIS IS MY OPINION) I learned a lot from this film. In fact I Learned About Prosecutors, Judges, Defendants, All about politics that was shown in the film. I wish my country was like this. Sadly this'll be hard to be copied in most of our countries... Rats.

Now for some flaws: Im not sure if you guys have the same Trouble ad well but The subtitles are too fast the way they talk is just like less than a second and then the subtitle disappear. Another flaw was the first part of the movie. For me, The First Part or Act or Arc or whatever you guys wanna say it is like Too Much explanation everywhere, my brain sadly can't process them all at once.

But I think that's it, yeah that's it. I give this movie a 8.9/10.

Donnie yen is amazing.

His best directing!

The Prosecutor, directed by the talented Donnie Yen, is an intense Hong Kong action thriller based on a true story from 2016. It follows Ma Ka-kit (Mason Fung), a young guy who gets wrongfully accused of drug smuggling after he rents out his address for some extra cash.

The cast is fantastic, with Donnie Yen taking the lead as Fok Chi-ho, a former narcotics detective who becomes a public prosecutor. Fok's relentless pursuit of justice for Ma is both motivating and gripping as he navigates the tricky waters of the Department of Justice, guided by his mentor Bao Ding (Kent Cheng) and chief prosecutor Yeung Dit-lap (Francis Ng).

Edmond Wong's brilliant screenplay, paired with Donnie Yen's direction and production, creates a suspenseful vibe that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The film dives into the corruption within the legal system and the struggle for justice, making it both thought-provoking and emotionally impactful.

The supporting cast, featuring Shirley Chan as defense attorney Li Sze-man and Julian Cheung as legal executive Au Pak-man, brings depth to the narrative, ensuring every character feels essential to the story.

The Prosecutor is a must-see for anyone who loves action thrillers and legal dramas. With its engaging plot, outstanding performances, and expert direction, this film showcases the strength of perseverance and the vital need to fight for justice against all odds.

Amazing

When I first saw the trailer for the film, I was immediately drawn in. I was looking forward to watching it as soon as it was released, and now I've finally seen it. I can say that it is definitely one of my favorite martial arts films in my collection.

First, I have to talk about the action sequences. Wow! Some of them were absolutely crazy. What's even cooler is that the action scenes blend seamlessly into the narrative and they are not out of place or overdone. They really elevated the story, which was a great bonus. One of the things that surprised me was that they weren't all just choreographed fights. They all had a purpose or a consequence, and they were used to propel the story forward.

Speaking of the story, the plot had me hooked the entire way. We see Donnie Yen's character, Fok Chi Ho, through the ups and downs of his investigation, and I was captivated. The movie was suspenseful and I found myself on the edge of my seat the whole time. The way the film builds tension is a big factor that makes the climax so satisfying. And even the ending has a little twist that adds a fresh perspective to the ending.

I was very impressed with the entire cast in the film. This is the sort of film where every character has the potential to elevate the narrative, and the casting is spot-on. I also loved that the acting was not over-the-top. The characters felt real, and their performances helped sell the story.

The film has a lot of heart, and there's a message in there about the importance of fighting for what you believe in, even when the odds are stacked against you. That's a message that resonates with me, and it's part of what makes this movie so great.

The film also had some humor and wit thrown into the mix, and I found those parts of the movie to be particularly enjoyable. The tone is pretty dark at times, but the witty dialogue cuts through the tension really well, and it keeps you from feeling completely despondent about what happens. This is a good thing, and it really shows the care that went into the writing.

The film was just a joy to watch. It's the kind of film that I know I'll want to revisit sometime in the future and rewatch from beginning to end. You can tell that the filmmakers really cared about what they were making, and that the film had a lot of heart. The way they combine action, humor, drama, and heart is why I think it's so good.

The Prosecutor is a must-watch for any fan of Donnie Yen, action movies, or even just good filmmaking in general. It's the perfect blend of all three genres, and it makes for a great movie to watch. This film deserves to be ranked amongst Donnie Yen's best work.

Great fillm about Social Justice in China.

Great legal drama about fighting for Social Justice in Hong Kong and China.

It also highlights that pretty and sexy Chinese prosecutors should maintain their integrity and virtue, and not be seduced by evildoers to violate Human Rights and the UN Charter.

NB: We wish to emphasize that International Law and the UN Charter must be restored in Ukraine and Russia.

Putin has violated International law and the UN Charter by invading Ukraine.

Hence we order Russia's Armed Forces and the People's Libertaion Army to bring Putin to Justice for war crimes, as stipulated by the International Criminal Court.

In the meantime we have taken power in Russia, to restore the UN Charter in the Global Community.
