Netflix’s latest drama When Life Gives You Tangerines starring Iu and Park Bo-gum has been making quite some waves for its emotional storytelling and heartfelt narrative. The characters are relatable and vulnerable as the next person. The drama premiered on March 7, with four episodes releasing each Friday. So far, eight episodes have aired in two parts – volume 1 and volume 2. Volume 3 of When Life Gives You Tangerines is slated to release on March 21, 2025.

Berlin-based Films Boutique has picked up international rights to Tanel Toom’s Truth And Justice, which has been shortlisted for the international feature film Oscar.

The Estonian drama broke all box records when it was released domestically in February, generating more than 267,000 admissions and beating previous record-holder Avatar, which had 194,000.

Following its international premiere in Busan in October, Truth and Justice screened at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival last month and has been selected for Palm Springs in January.

The deal for international rights was negotiated by producer Ivo Felt and Films Boutique COO Gabor Grenier.

Exclusive: Truth And Justice, the Estonian debut feature that was one of the more unexpected inclusions on the Academy’s International Feature Film Oscar shortlist earlier this week, has been snapped up by Berlin-based sales agent Films Boutique.

The film is a historical epic running at 149 mins that follows an Estonian farmer in 1870 who struggles against a rival neighbor as well as his own family and beliefs. It is an adaptation of author Anton Hansen Tammsaare’s pentalogy novel of the same name, written 1926 – 1933, which is considered to be one of the fundamental works of Estonian literature.

Writer-director Tanel Toom made his feature debut on the film, he was previously Oscar nominated for his 2010 short The Confession.

Georgian filmmaker Zaza Urushadze, whose credits include the Oscar-nominated drama Tangerines, has died at the age of 53, according to local reports.

The news broke last night (December 7) during the closing weekend of the Tbilisi International Film Festival, which ran in the Georgian capital throughout this week. Attendees at the fest took to social media to express their grief at the news.

Urushadze was one of the country’s most prominent filmmakers. In addition to his directing work, he also oversaw the Georgian National Cinema Center between 2002 and 2004, and until recently headed the Georgian Film Academy.

The son of a famous Soviet football goalkeeper, Urushadze was born in Tbilisi in 1965. His debut feature was 1998’s Here Comes The Dawn, which played international festivals and was the country’s Oscar submission that year, though was not nominated.

Estonia has selected drama “Take It or Leave It” as its submission for the Oscar for best foreign-language film – the third time in five years that the country has put forward a movie from producer Ivo Felt, whose 2014 “Tangerines” received Estonia’s only Academy Award nomination.

“Take It or Leave It” beat six other contenders under consideration by a selection committee led by Edith Sepp, CEO of the Estonian Film Institute, which announced the selection Thursday. Five members of the seven-person panel picked “Take It or Leave It” as their choice for submission to the Academy.

Director Liina Triškina-Vanhatalo’s film tackles themes of responsibility, single parenthood and economic inequality. It tells the story of a 30-year-old construction worker who suddenly finds himself a single parent when his ex-girlfriend, whom he hasn’t seen for six months, has a baby girl and informs him that she’ll put the child...

Nominations for the 91st Academy Awards are not until Tuesday January 22, but the first submissions for best foreign-language film are now being announced.

Last year saw a record 92 submissions for the award, which were narrowed down to a shortlist of nine. This was cut to five nominees, with Sebastián Lelio’s transgender drama A Fantastic Woman ultimately taking home the gold statue.

The Academy started with a record 83 submissions for the Foreign Language Oscar this year, whittling that down to a shortlist of nine in December. Today we are left with five nominees: Damián Szifrón’s Wild Tales (Argentina); Zaza Urushadze’s Tangerines (Estonia) Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu (Mauritania); Paweł Pawlikowski’s Ida (Poland); and Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan (Russia). And, as is the case every year, there is a major surprise in the bunch. There’s also an interesting twist thanks to another major category.

Of the four shortlisted foreign language films which were omitted from the nominees today, the biggest shock is Force Majeure. Those who follow our content know that the Best Foreign Language Film race is one of the ones we follow closely, if not the closest. Tomorrow morning the five nominees for the Academy Award in this category will be announced bringing the months long journey to an end. The real climax will happen once the winner is announced in February, but for the five lucky finalists, a nomination is already a miraculous feat. It has been a long road in which many factors besides the quality of the films come into play.

The first few submissions were announced in mid-August and from that point on dozens of countries selected a film to participate. That’s the first cut. Each film had to compete against all the other eligible films released in their respective country that year. In some cases the competition might be slight, but in territories with a sizable film industry the selection process is not as clear-cut.

Once the submission deadline arrived, a total of 83 nations had submitted an entry - a record number. Several entries came from countries submitting for the first time. Out of those 83 films I personally managed to watch a little over 60 via festivals, screenings, and screeners. I was able to chat with about 30 of the films’ directors and learn about their personal stories and how differently they each approach the filmmaking process. Every year this is really a lesson on artistic diversity, industry development, and political and social sensitivities from across the globe. It’s truly amazing.

There were many great and memorable films among the entries I was able to watch and I hope all of them get distributions deals eventually. However, as with everything, we all have our favorites. The 12 films listed below are some of the best cinematic works I witness in the past year overall, not only among those in a foreign language. Several of them are among my ten favorite films of the year and others are included in my longer year-end list. “Timbuktu,” “Gett,” “White God,” and hopefully “Tangerines” will be among my 2015 favorites.

It has been a great year for World Cinema. Go out there and see these films. They are all incredible works of art each in its own right.

The awards continue marching on, and the latest development comes straight from The Academy. They have announced (via Variety) the nine official films shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Film. That means these nine make the cut, and will proceed forward into the next round of voting before being eliminated again down to five films for the official nominations annoncement on January 15th. On one hand, one of my favorite films of the year, Force Majeure, made the cut along with Pawel Pawlikowski's Ida. However, my other favorites, Xavier Dolan's Mommy and the Dardennes‘ Two Days, One Night, did not make the cut - quite surprisingly since they're both such great films that deserve to be considered.
