Avis à la une
Glad that Rashmika agreed to act in a sensible story, The movie might not be perfect and it can be a drag at times, but it makes you feel angry and you can relate with the character all through the way, the ending could have been less dramatic cause not every girl gets a stage and spotlights to showcase her braveness, but I loved of the message of the movie "every girl deserves to walk with her head held high no matter what!" Don't understand why she had to still be friendly with her abusive father at the end. There could have been a scene where the dad realizes his mistake and apologizes but he doesn't.
I didn't plan on watching this film, but my friends picked it, so I went along. The story isn't clear or engaging - it's preachy and tries too hard to sound deep. The main character doesn't feel interesting or real. The screenplay has a few nice dramatic moments, but most of it is boring as hell. Some conversations are well-written, but many sound forced, silly, or like fake-intellectual talk. The climax might seem meaningful at first, but it's actually quite irrational and over the top.
Rashmika tries hard and gives her best, but she just doesn't fit the role completely. She tends to overact and struggles to keep it natural. Her expressions are often exaggerated, and her voice doesn't quite blend with the tone of the film. Also, her appearance feels a bit off for this kind of role - she has a slightly boyish look, which doesn't help with the emotional depth her character demands.
Deekshit performs well, but his character is written in a very convenient way based on what the writer wants to preach.
Surprisingly, Anu Emmanuel, who's usually an average performer, gets the best-written role here and handles it quite well.
Rahul Ravindran's direction is okay - he gets the best he can out of his team - but his writing feels pseudo-intellectual and pretentious in places. He should've gone with a more fitting actress for the lead and a stronger music director to lift the film's tone.
Production values are decent, cinematography is good, music is just okay.
If you like boring movies that act like they're deep and talk about relationships and feminism in a "woke" way, you might enjoy it. Otherwise, it's skippable.

Just watched the girlfriend movie, too intense, talks a tint of feminism, especially last 30 mins was crazy, rashmika has delivered a stellar performance, the problem is with the screenplay, I feel is the whole film portrays the toxic love throughout, as an audience I was waiting for that breaking point, which I feel should have been kept little earlier stage of the film, that stretch kind of created that build up, still it was too much stretched, and also after such comments from her own father (which is the breaking point for her, also changed her life), it was not shown how they reconciled. Anyway overall It was good watch.
It is a poignant cinematic experience that beautifully encapsulates love through the eyes of an Indian woman navigating societal expectations and personal aspirations. This film offers a refreshing perspective on relationships, marrying traditional values with contemporary issues, all while delivering a narrative that resonates deeply with modern audiences.
At the heart of this story is a compelling exploration of how societal norms shape the experiences of women. The film deftly highlights the struggles faced by an Indian girl as she grapples with the judgment from family and partners who often overlook her dreams in favor of fulfilling expectations. The protagonist's journey is a mirror reflecting the challenges many young women face today-where their needs and aspirations are frequently dismissed.
Rasmika's portrayal of the lead character is nothing short of stellar. She brings a vibrant energy to the role, seamlessly conveying a wide range of emotions. Her performance captures the essence of a young woman striving to assert her identity and desires in a world that asks her to conform. Alongside her, Deekshit's performance as the love interest adds depth to the narrative, showcasing the complexities of their relationship and how love can be both uplifting and constraining.
The music in "The Girlfriend" further enhances the emotional gravitas of the film. The soundtrack is carefully curated, each note enhancing the storytelling and helping to maintain a rhythm that draws the audience in. This is a film worth watching, a celebration of love in its truest form, and a call to embrace the voices of women.

Abuse need not be loud. It can be done in a million subtle ways until your soul is crushed, destroyed and you become the walking dead! If you don't stand up for yourself, no one else will! I have never come across a movie that has portrayed narcissistic behavior better than this! This is how they frame you that you are at fault. You caused everything. And no one can understand anything. They would be silently judging you constantly. You end up being in that hypervigilant state stuck forever. I'm glad someone in Indian cinema has finally decided to bring this to limelight. Being someone in a similar relationship or even worse than this. I can relate so much to Rashmika. This is undoubtedly one of her best!
