Just like the best taste experiences are born out of randomness, so was this one. You find yourself in a random place on a random day under random circumstances, and boom.
There was some hype, of course, and the usual fear of what happens with hype, plus a pinch of sarcasm that it might all be too bland. The beginning was a slow burn nibbling, with the aftertaste kicking in around 25 minutes later, but then-boom-it turned into a damn near perfect comfort adventure, lasting exactly 1 hour and 38 minutes.
As a self-proclaimed gourmand, I evaluate the nuances of food and wine based on my mood, not my feelings-and this film managed to create exactly that kind of experience. After a few courses and some insane transitions in sound (which, by the way, was arguably the best boundary-pushing element), imagine this: a scene lasting a few minutes (or at least it felt that way), where all you hear is the sound of someone dragging their bag through slushy snow, and somehow it works-until the next transition of sound and presence delivers a catharsis. A ducking party in my brain!
The dialogues? Like W. A.'s greatest hits-genuine, world-fixing conversations flowing seamlessly into each other without arrogance, and everything just works.
I would 100% watch this film as a silent movie, and I would also just listen to the audio-it would work both ways. (For me, at least.)
In the end, this experience was exactly the kind I wouldn't have even dared to imagine in my wildest expectations. I'm still not entirely sure what happened, but whatever it was, it was right. The first time I watched it, the final scenes even got me a little moist-eyed, but let's just chalk that up to age-related peculiarities and my 15-year-long "Brazilian" trip.
Either way, the aging and self-mocking me walked out of Sõprus cinema absolutely buzzed, highly entertained, and in full-on Silo vibes.
