A fantasy escape. A surreal plot and absence of deep character development. The acting was good, wardrobe lively, landscapes very picturesque. The instrumental background mysic was lovely. I liked the "family you choose" vibe. There are many feel good parts to warm the soul. The storyline drew you in at the beginning and later it seems like the director got somewhat lost. My interest began to wain with Epusode 17. The story relocated to the dessert which caused a big disconnect for me. It did not flow with the storyline. It was too fantastic. Yet, I would still recommend this show to others. It was pure uncomplicated enjoyment. A show too d numb from a stressful day and escape.
The whole show hasn't aired yet but I've seen 10 episodes so far. It's been good but kind of cheesy I mean they make the main character some kind of supernatural person. So she's good at literally everything she tries? She never fails? She can outsmart anyone and win any competition? I don't like shows where they make people super unbelievable and I also hate love triangles. Like pick or choose a dude for her don't tease that there could be two options for her (one is a dude who let her get whipped might I add) Iike what? They have her going through all of this abuse for a single relic that she technically can just describe to her long lost father. Plot just doesn't make sense. It's also a bit confusing to follow because EVERYONE is scheming something at all times. But I'm going to keep watching because I'm invested now.

Hands down, this has become the best historical drama of the year for me. If you appreciate award-winning acting, breathtaking scenes, and intriguing storylines and backstories, then you will appreciate and like what this drama has to offer.
First, the opening score is spectacular. Even more beautiful is the opening of the drama which shows the lead character, Duan Wu played by Zhao Lusi, diving for pearls. The choreography and cinematography of the scene should win awards alone. From there, the viewer is pulled into the struggles of Duan Wu's life. After tragedy befalls her, she meets Yan Zi Jing, played by Liu Yuning, a complicated businessman who has his own agenda and tragic backstory.
One of my pet peeves in watching dramas is to be pulled out of the story building. Since episode 1, I've been pulled in so deep, I feel I'm on a ship in middle of the ocean, caring for real people and their purpose and life's journey. The occasional creaking board sounds are brilliant because I feel I'm not just watching characters on a set. The acting is so natural. There is no overacting or under acting. I feel the moment, happy and sad, with them.
I highly reccomend.

If this drama is gorgeously made and the plot lines will keep you engaged. The emotional roller coaster with great pacing of the storyline guaranteed. The story begins at the lowest of ranks of social status but thru obstacles and tribulations, the leads characters undergoing growth that affected their destinies. A lot of empowering quotes that I can use in modern life. Despite the focus is there for the leads, other supporting characters also will be having their stories to tell and this will add another layer of complexity in this drama. Furthermore, the acting of the each actors and actresses are on point as well!
The Story of Pearl Girl is a breathtaking film that dives into the heart of empowerment and the essence of feminism in a way that feels both refreshing and necessary. With outstanding direction, top-notch acting, and a grounded use of realistic props, this film captures the journey of self-discovery and strength in a world that often challenges true freedom and equality.
What sets The Story of Pearl Girl apart from other films exploring similar themes is its commitment to portraying empowerment as a journey that begins from within. The central character ,Duan Wu, does not rely on grandiose displays of defiance or bold statements of strength. Instead, she subtly redefines her path, choosing actions that resonate with authenticity and self-respect. This quiet strength gives her character an undeniable depth and likability, as her evolution feels both deeply personal and universal. Her story reminds us that true feminism isn't about dominance or opposition, but about finding and embracing one's inner voice.
The OST is amazing and every actor gives its best. Liu Yuning shines as the ML and his acting matches the energy of our Pearl Girl, Zhao Lusi.
A must watch for everyone wants to motivate themselves in life.

To be honest I've seen better acting from the lead actress and actor in their other dramas.
Pacing is slow and I have issues with the plot progression and characterisation. Logic is lacking in a lot of the storyline.
How is it possible for the female lead to look so unsullied and relatively neat as a slave in the first two episodes compared to other grubby and downtrodden slaves? Where did she find the strength and wits to fight off two guys while under water, escape the sharks and hold her breath long enough to unearth a prized pearl with seemingly supernatural abilities?
The supporting cast is not as strong. Acting and expressions are a little exaggerated. For superb acting, watch the leads in Love Game in Eastern Fantasy, New Beginnings or The Double.
I gave up after struggling to finish episode 5. Zhao Lusi has turned out good dramas in the past. Love Like the Galaxy, The Romance of Tiger and Rose, and Hidden Love as well The Long Ballad are good examples.
This one is unfortunately a miss for me.
I've seen lots of high rated reviews obviously by fans of the leads. Make no mistake, I'm also a huge fan of the FL and ML. But honestly this drama is not the best of their works.
The disappointment is a combination of scripting, adaptation, directing, plot and character development. Unfortunately there are other dramas with similar themes of females in business and empowerment/ motivation focus set in historical times which are a lot more compelling than how this series seeks to express.
This was one of my highly anticipated dramas of 2024 so the disappointment was all the more sharper hence the harsh rating.

Through its storytelling, The Story Of Pearl Girl painted a picture of survival through sheer will power and determination. Zhao Lusi is the embodiment of Duan Wu and later Su Muzhe, her acting is Oscar worthy and will take viewers along with her through her own struggles, pain, tribulation and triumph. You will laugh, cry and cheer for the women in this story, women empowerment is the strongest theme in this drama. This is not a drama focusing on romance and yet its love story is sweet, tender, and bittersweet. The ending didn't make me feel sad as it did to some viewers, because I believe the main couple were together until the end of Yan Zijing's life. Su Muzhe was able to achieve what she had always wanted, being a successful businesswoman, having freedom, to travel around and see the world. The ending wrapped things nicely, justice was served as it should. Liu Yuning aced his character as Yan Zijing, and I think this is his best acting to date. The supporting cast also did amazing as each of them was a perfect fit for his/her character. The cinematography is amazing from the beginning to the end, the music score and OSTs are hauntingly beautiful. If you're looking for a complex drama with character growth and depths, great storyline and acting, The Story Of Pearl Girl is a must-watch series,

The first episode grabbed my attention since it seemed to have a large budget, but it quickly falls off a cliff after that. It's laughable seeing the cutesy actress with perfect hair and makeup being tortured and whipped in every episode. They tried to combine a boring political drama with some kind of pirate Cinderella story, and it simply doesn't work. It's 40 episodes of watching this woman be abused, recovering within minutes, and then acting like she's in a 2024 high school drama. None of the character motivations make sense. Who is backstabbing who? It's a nonsensical plot stretched paper thin.

Amazing drama or Pearl slave called duan wu who seek freedom. An though journey for women in that era to overcome all the obstacle and to get where she is now
Its more than just a romance drama but also pack with revenge and growth of every character. Not to mention the drama cinematography is goood! Zhao Lusi and Liu Yuning manage to bring life to their character and give us the best performance. The drama itself doesn't solely focus on romance but also journey of women in business where it was not easy back then. Love everything about this drama from the plot, cast, angst and pain they serve, cinematography and many more!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

I'd been waiting for this drama and I'm not disappointed. This drama pulled me in right away after the first episode. I feel emotionally connected to the characters, especially Duan Wu/Su Muzhe portrayed brilliantly by Zhao Lusi. I've laughed, cried, and shed many tears. The characters are complex, the storyline is engaging with amazing cinematography and music score, OSTs, and the nuanced acting of its cast. I'd only seen two dramas of Liu Yuning, The Long Ballad and A Journey To Love, and for me, Yan Zijing is his best role to date and suits him perfectly. Determination, perseverance, survival, will power, women empowerment and independence are some of the main themes in this drama, reflect ongoing women's struggles in the modern day. I'm feeling sad that this drama is about to end soon, but I know that I'll be rewatching. A must watch series! Available on Youku International app and Netflix.
The set design is really nice and lots of good green screen additions.
The acting (or lack of a decent script for the actors) is a whole different situation - ABSOLUTELY terrible !!!!
Having an attractive visual set and attractive actors does not compensate for the dreadfully poor storyline and terrible attempts by the actors to appear to be sincere to the characters they are playing.
The general dialogue is really not of high standard and even if the entire concept is based on fantasy there is a point where this fantasy clashes heavily with pure stupididity - that is a MAJOR obstacle that a viewer will face when watching.
The flow of the story is terrible and often makes no sense.
High Costume Drama with absolutely no viewer satisfaction guaranteed !

Bold, compelling, intriguing... The Story of Pearl Girl is weaving a tale that you certainly do NOT want to miss!
2024 hasn't been donating the best Cdramas so far with few exceptions.. but I'm glad this came along. A pretty decent watch!
Everyone sees the beauty of pearl. They view it with admiration of it's beautiful and excellence but no one seems to know what people go through to get it. Even setting their lives on the line for it. The motto thus being: Dive or die. And so Duanwu emerges from the many pearl divers of this land with the mantra "I want to change my fate" taking on the brave role of working towards it.
A Captivating journey is woven, our female lead steps forward, taking every STEP POSSIBLE to obtain that freedom, even if it's to put her life on the line for that freedom.
The Plot is RAW, A POWERFUL AND EMOTIONAL narrative of a slave girl on a quest for true freedom and redemption. Sailing on a journey of the ups and down on the harsh business world dominated by cunning Men. It's an interesting adventure that draws you in an intimate attachment to our female character, Duanwu. The flow of the plot is Smooth. It's just right for what Is needed. Her development so far is natural, raw yet appealingly driving. It's a powerful plot focussed on our female lead's journey in a quest for redemption where she walks up the ladder of the business world and capturing the power at the top. And Fights to keep it.
Duanwu isn't ONLY a smart Witty girl who works with her brain to scheme and conquer. She IS PHYSICALLY FIT! Our girl can fight! She can beat up scumbag men, she can kick ass YASS now that's something you don't see always for such female lead set-up. She isn't afraid of physical actions, she takes risks and slays at it!
The characters in the show are truly compelling. Not all though but the mains are truly something to look forward to. Zhao Lusi has my damn jaws on the floor with the execution of her character. Honestly she did better than expected. She engrossed herself into the role and perfectly embodied the character so well that you could See DUANWU in her. It's no wonder she Fought for this drama and role (since 2022 or so) ( she said she loved the character so much) and I can see how she's perfectly bringing the role to life. I'm honestly impressed.
Our male lead is a complex character worth of study alongside another drama I find interesting, The tomboy. She is certainly a grey interesting character that's always worth being on the lookout for.
Our tomboy ( forget her name haha) is a lady on a quest to make her stand in a toxic male dominated business world. And she is gonna do Anything for that.
The characters here are complex and interesting. Well... Except the 2nd lead who is ..well predictable goodie boy lol ( all righteous) I sorta find his character... dull. But let's see if he gets better I guess.
But Amidst his full character I think the two male leads add value to the female leads journey. Our male lead teaching her on the harsh realities of the business world and harshly training her for it. While the 2nd leads takes her on a morally correct ethics of life. A perfect blend.
Cinematograohy wise, This drama is decent for the genre. It isn't flashy as for a fantasy but for a historical drama of Such category, it's pretty nice. And the UNDERWATER SCENES WERE CHEF KISS. I can't believe it was filmed in a real life water! Excellent! No wonder it was so realistically done. Beautiful.
The Ost of this drama is suiting for the concept of the drama. Not by best lineup of Ost but it's actually decent. Especially the Opening theme.
If you're contemplating if you should watch this drama, I'd recommend you check out the first two episodes. Ep1 captivated me at the go! So I believe these two episodes are enough for you to judge. Although I'm confident it'll hook you. You should check clips and see if the genres are something that you'll like, if so then I think you'll love this. It's gripping indeed and overall worth the time.

Just finished watching this series, and I can honestly say I have never been more disappointed with any of the starring. The show is an easy 2/10, and even that feels like a stretch. The lead actress, in particular, was unbearable-she gave off a vibe of someone who couldn't even pretend to fake emotion properly. Every scene she was in felt forced and hollow, and it completely ruined any chance of connecting with the story. Speaking of the story, it was just as bad-dull, predictable, and completely directionless. The series went absolutely nowhere from start to finish, with slow pacing that made every episode feel like a chore. Even when I fast-forwarded through large sections hoping for something exciting, I was still left disappointed. The fight scenes, while "okay" at best, lacked energy and felt tacked on as filler. The dialogue was equally terrible, with lazy, uninspired lines that sounded more like placeholders than actual writing. The characters were flat and unrelatable, offering no emotional connection, and even the supposed twists were painfully obvious. The production value didn't help either-it was bland, uncreative, and felt like no real effort was made to elevate the experience. By the time I reached the end, I was left with nothing but regret for wasting my time. If you're thinking of watching this, don't bother-it's garbage that fails in every possible way. There are countless better shows to invest your time in, even rewatching something you've already seen would be better. This one was frustrating, boring, and utterly lifeless. Save yourself the disappointment and skip it entirely.

Not since "Word of Honor" have I been so wowed by a historical C-drama. Beautiful sets, an exotic yet universal story of survival and best of all, some of the most spot-on casting I've ever seen. As many reviewers have described, all of the leads are excellent, from the lithe pearl diving slave DuanWu to the dandy of a schemer "Master" Yan Zijing. Plus the supporting characters, like DuWaan's "little brother" Shrimp and Yan's mysterious brooding first mate, are all perfect too. It helps that the subtitles for this series are never clumsy and like Word of Honor was, quite poetic sometimes. But Confucian moments aside, this is also a cool ACTION film. (That's clear as day by the time they hit "Despairing Cove".) So along with all the devious back-stabbing, cunning plots and Yan's seductive half-smiles, there's plenty of furious chase scenes and take-no-prisoners fight-to-the-deaths. At this point, I'm at Ep. 10 with 30 more to go. But no matter how it turns out in the end, I can already tell this Pearl Girl story is going to a magnificent ride. I'm taking one star off for making the otherwise clever DuanWu so clueless about wielding her sex appeal for some extra leverage against that Yan dude. Looking like an angel is nice, but mostly it gets boring after a while. Disclaimer: At this point I'm waiting for weekly episodes to drop and will edit my review if things go south.

Truly a binge-worthy to watch, well executed plot, moderate pacing of storyline, the cinematography were brilliant & top notch and OST were beautifully written. The story of Pearl Girl is an interesting plot, not the typical kind of Cdrama where the Female Lead here has a strong personality yet doesn't hold grudge but with unwavering determination to rise from slavery to work her way up in the Pearl business; this drama also rich in Chinese culture and storytelling. The Main actors and supporting casts did a great job in bringing their characters to life. Zhao Lusi and Yuning Chemistry are undeniable off and on screen. I can't think of other Chinese Actress who can act DuanWu/SuMuZhi well if not better than Zhao Lusi. This drama is truly a masterpiece especially those raving reviews from Chinese film industry.
This chinese drama was the best! My C-DRAMA OF 2024! This was very beautiful and amazing. The plot, the characters, the cinematography, the OST, the script and everything about this drama was really perfect. I would say that all actresses and actors of this drama was doing their job well. From the very first episode up until the end, all are excellent. The acting skills are superb! Especially Zhao Lusi, her acting really really great! Worth to watch! You must watch this! A lot of lessons especially when it comes to women empowerment and freedom you can get from watching this drama. I really loved it!

I just watched it, and I'm already bored. At first I thought this drama might be good, people said this drama is good. Yeah a pearl diver woman, she's so stupid if she knows Treated like that why didn't he run away? He had plenty of chances to run away. And as for his acting, I know he acted like he was suffering. But his acting was too much, he still looked good in that condition. And the plot of some parts made me confused because it was not very clear.
And some romantic scenes, yes, even though I know, but I think it doesn't make sense. But there are some things I like about Chinese dramas, namely about very cinematic places.

What an immense drama of grit and survival. Not only the Story of Pearl Girl an eye opener for the oppressive conditions of pearl diving in the olden times, but it also dramatically conveys the passion of a sole pearl girl to survive in a world she had no choice but to fight for herself and own her freedom. The story is original and have been well developed during the drama. Acting wise, all characters were well portrayed by the cast, specially, the main leads, Zhao Lusi as Duan Wu /Su Muzhe and Liu Yuning as Yan Zijing. Zhao Lusi never dissapoints, she always comes on top of every characters she played. Kudos to her best performance in this drama. Cinematography is top notch, you can't find fault in any scenes, and the directions are superb. All scenes are beautifully crafted and presented.
