During a particularly intense scene Dan Paton agreed to be choked for real on set. He was given a penny and told to drop it if he was in danger. The first few takes were fine, but on the final one he couldn't breathe and the penny dropped. The crew panicked and rushed to his aid. He'd started to black out and was unaware of what had happened. The performance looked so convincing and horrific to watch that the take ended up being the final one in the film.
The director was not allowed to shoot with a tripod in Highgate cemetery so had to improvise by balancing the camera on the sound recordist's head.
The director had planned to create a shattered mirror using sheets of reflective plastic, rather than smash one, through fear of superstition. However, time was short on set so he asked Tom Butler, the director of photography, if he'd be happy to just smash one. Butler, completely unfazed, grabbed the nearest lighting stand and wacked the mirror repeatedly until it shattered.
The director pretended to hide the remains of a dead spider in a box and brought it out onto set during particularly tense scenes, threatening to throw it at Eaoifa Forwards face if her performance wasn't convincing enough.
To cut down on costs, the director and his father built a camera dolly using a combination of MDF, aluminium and skateboard wheels with garden tubing for tracks.
