Give it a crack, the aligator did

The release year of The Bayou (2025) states that it was 2025. Ok, but why on earth is such a movie like this produced in this day-and-age? With an estimated budget of $5 million (unconfirmed) I doubt that they saw a return out of this move.

Madalena Aragão (Alice) reminded me of Kaya Scodelario in her looks, I had to do some searching on that, as it happens, Kaya was in the movie Crawl (2019) which was about gators. Crawl was a better movie.

Anyway, overall The Bayou was just ok, but below average for a 2025 movie. Athena Strates (Kyle) didn't quiet convince me that she was a gator expert. Elisha Applebaum (Malika) worked her magic and totally convinced me to dislike her character, so well done there, Elisha.

Other actors trying to do their bit were Mohammed Mansaray (Sam) seemed to be confused whether he had to be the comedic relief or a wanna be hero. The crazed pilot, Frank (Andonis Anthony), was not convincing at being a leader. Tayla Kovacevic-Ebong (Dom) was probably the hero, or close to one.

Overall, the effects were not too bad, the story and acting are what you would expect from the B movie. Would I recommend this? A few beers or wine and it is a yes.

What the literal...

Ug, talk about a bad high school project, whole thing was probably filmed from an iphone. The trailer says from the producers of "47 meters down" uh really?

This is like cheap beyond cheap production, which is alright if they tried but the people are annoying, the story makes no sense, and just irritatingly the whole way that gives me a headache.

Everyone in the film is so unlikable and makes no sense, was cheering for the CGI gators. I mean, yeah, these kinds of films should have annoying people, but there's a limit.

And did the meth make the gather super smart too? That Jurassic Park 3 ending is ludicrous.

Easily 1/10.

Don't waste your time or money

Terrible acting, horrible casting, and a storyline that feels like it was recycled from countless other films-but with an extra layer of awfulness. The dialogue is forced, the characters are unconvincing, and the pacing is sluggish. Any attempt at suspense or emotion falls completely flat. Even the cinematography and editing seem rushed and uninspired. It's almost impressive how every element of this movie manages to miss the mark. I think 1 star is overrating it-this is a complete waste of time.

You will be surprised by the time you will waste watching this cheap movie. Can't believe I wasted my time.

Review of The Bayou - A Disappointing Experience

Much better than I expected.

I put this movie on last night not expecting much but it is so much better than I expected.

I thought it would be on par with a lot of Asylum films but this is way better.

The CGI is pretty good, the acting is also pretty good. Sure there's the expected a'hole characters and silly sacrifices but all in all it's a fun movie.

What's not to like? People and alligators in the bayou.

I don't know why other people have given it such rubbish reviews, glad I didn't read them before I watched it.

I went in expecting rubbish and was pleasantly surprised.

Why not give it a go.

If you like creature features, this is the movie for you.

A fair enough alligator movie...

Truth be told, I am a sucker for killer animal movies, and thus I needed no persuasion to sit down and check out the 2025 movie "The Bayou".

Writers Ashley Holberry and Gavin Cosmo Mehrtens put together a script that, while it was generic, was actually entertaining enough. It was a simplistic and straightforward script, and the writers didn't exactly bring anything new to the genre. Regardless, "The Bayou" proved to be an entertaining alligator movie.

I was not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, but I found the acting performances to be good. I actually do enjoy watching unfamiliar talents on the screen whenever I sit down to watch a movie, so that spoke well in favor of "The Bayou".

The effects in the movie were good, which is a must for a movie with killer animals. There is nothing worse than sitting down and watching a movie where the animals look like they were discarded from a 1990s computer game because they looked to fake. Luckily that was not the case in "The Bayou".

If you enjoy killer animal movies, then directors Taneli Mustonen and Brad Watson does deliver an enjoyable movie with the 2025 movie "The Bayou".

My rating of "The Bayou" lands on a five out of ten stars.

The Bayou - doesn't deserve it's bad rating

The movie, at least in my opinion, is really underrated. It's really not that bad. With a better script, it's sequel could be a really good movie (if it gets greenlit). Alligators are kinda funky, not by the looks, they look great, but they're kinda unrealistic because of their behavior. No alligator (drugged or not) is THAT weird. I would watch this one, but don't expect too much. It's one of those movies that's good by being sorta bad. The characters make some pretty bad decisions, but it's understandable considering they're being chased by junkie alligators. Some characters are NOT likeable at all, but that's just life, you won't like everyone. Some outcomes are pretty predictable, and as far as the kills go, they are pretty creative.

Ignore the gator haters - The Bayou is undemanding fun.

After suffering through Skinamarink, one of the most boring horror films I have ever seen, I needed to cleanse my palate, so to speak. The Bayou fits the bill perfectly - it's a cheap and cheerful creature feature with absolutely no pretensions. It does exactly what it says on the tin and is actually better than I expected, with above average CGI for this kind of thing, a smattering of gore and reasonable performances.

Athena Strates plays Kyle, who flies to the everglades with her friends to scatter the ashes of her older brother Jamie (Flynn Barnard). Disaster strikes when the plane experiences engine trouble and ditches in the middle of a swamp, where the alligator population has turned super-aggressive due to the powerful narcotic that was dumped in the water during a raid on an illegal drug factory.

The film obviously won't win any awards for originality, but it's not trying to - it knows exactly what is required of it, moving swiftly along, delivering a few jump scares and a fair bit of suspense. And it doesn't scrimp on the gator action: there's numerous ravenous reptiles, both practical and computer generated, and they put quite a few similarly themed films to shame.

6/10. Worth a go if it's a brainless, no-nonsense bit of fun you're after.

The Bayou Review - Mutants, Mayhem, and Missed Potential

When nature collides with the consequences of human actions, a new creature is born - violent, uncontrollable, and above all: unpredictable. The Bayou illustrates this perfectly.

The story opens with a plane crash that leaves a group of survivors cut off from the world, surrounded by murky waters, creeping shadows, and a constant sense of danger. At the center stands Kyle, the film's protagonist, who leads the group in a fight for survival. The film blends survival thriller with biological horror, where the main threat is mutated alligators. However, the plot doesn't really evolve or shift in a meaningful way. It maintains a steady level of tension - which works in its favor at times, but also holds it back.

From beginning to end, the interactions between characters feel forced. Conversations lack flow, and the dialogue sounds like it's being read directly from the script. On the other hand, the cinematography deserves praise - each shot feels intentional and well-placed. The directing and writing, however, come across as the bare minimum. The film opens on a warm, almost family-like tone - something I always consider a great setup for a horror film. But just as emotional moments begin to build between the characters, the film quickly cuts them short to rush into the plane crash and the threat waiting in the bayou - even before the characters have boarded the plane. It feels like there was no real interest in developing the characters, just a rush to get to the action. It's as if none of the writers really wanted to tell a deep story - they just wanted to deliver a solid jump scare experience. And in that regard, they did pretty well.

The film opens with a highly intense score that initially feels out of place. But putting that moment aside, Segun Akinola delivers an excellent soundtrack. He manages to heighten the tension and even make the most predictable jump scares feel genuinely terrifying. The overall sound design is also impressive.

While the official budget has not been released, it's hard to ignore the CGI quality. Watching an alligator run like a flying bison from Avatar: The Last Airbender made it clear we were in trouble. Every interaction between the survivors and the creature felt detached from reality - awkward and far from realistic. That said, the creators seemed aware of this flaw and tried to compensate with clever camera work that kept things visually ambiguous. They also used real alligator footage, which blended surprisingly well and helped maintain a relatively realistic tone.

The ending, however, felt like a different film altogether - in the best way. Suddenly, the acting was more compelling, the camera work more precise, and a powerful flashback paired with an emotional score created a standout finale. The music in the final scene reached another level entirely, delivering a true sense of euphoria - one I'll likely remember for years.

The Bayou aims to immerse us in a story of survival, fear, and hysteria deep within the wild - but for the most part, it simply keeps us guessing when the next jump scare will arrive. There are moments of brilliance - both emotional and suspenseful - but they are few and far between.

If you're new to the horror genre, this could be a decent starting point. But if you're a seasoned fan looking for depth or innovation - you can probably skip it. You're not missing much.

[3.5] The Bayou-nado

Is their unlimited and limited funds each year to make crap horror monster movies?! There is naturally and obviously.

It is not bad, it is freakish bad. The monsters out of a 1982 visual effects box, the "blood" came from liters of reddish nail paint, the acting not so bad, the logic of the situations dismal and the ending straight from an empty juice packet.

I'm not against 'The Bayou', I just recommend watching any crocodile, alligator movie since the 1970s and finish with the sterling 2007 'Black Water' . Only then after watching the latter, you'd understand what a croc movie should be.

Laughable

Why would one film a movie that supposed to be set in the Southern US in Thailand???

As someone who lives in the south this was very painful to watch. We have beautiful swamps and deltas that would be happy to have a movie filmed in them.

Also I have to keep typing because it won't let me submit a review unless it's really long. I'm assuming that is to deter people from actually submitting reviews. If you want a good swamp movie watch Caddo Lake. It was actually filmed in the Southern US. If you want a good croc/gator movie, nothing beats Crocodile Dundee. I still need one more sentence so here goes.

Not a good film, but you still can have fun

Teen road trip. Yes! Animal horror. Yes! Alligators on drugs. Yes!!! The moment when you know you're not in for a good film, but you'll still have fun. And the film is rounded off. The modest budget is recognisable, but is creatively circumvented. Without question, the alligators are essential and there's not much to complain about. Less is more, instead of CGI eye cancer, a good motto. The actors will probably never end up in the top league, but they make an effort without overacting unpleasantly. The swamp setting is well chosen and atmospherically rendered. And importantly, no misplaced humour. Up to this point, the film has been well-rounded, but somehow it still gets a bit too far in the area that is perhaps the easiest to realise. Unfortunately, a script without surprises, with little suspense, a lack of logic, no likeable characters and lots of really stupid scenes.

What was this?

Stay away from this movie, I haven't seen anything this bad in my life! A film with no plot and very poorly acted, not even the characters knew what they were doing! I wasted an hour and a half of my life! The idea was there and it didn't start off badly, but after five minutes of the film, chaos began. Nothing made sense, the film kept moving forward and events that weren't connected started to happen. Even the special effects, even though I'm not an expert, I could have done better!... This is the first time I've submitted a review, and for this to happen, it's because I was truly devastated by what I just watched!!!

A decent popcorn horror held back by its characters

Let me start this review by saying that I am an absolute fan of survival horror, and I love movies where animals attack for some bonkers reason. So naturally, I was pretty excited to watch this. However, the ratings for this movie suggested it wouldn't be great, so I lowered my expectations before my viewing.

The story follows a group of people who crash in a small plane in the wetlands of Florida, only to find themselves under attack from drugged-out alligators. The premise sounds hilarious and immediately reminded me of Cocaine Bear. However, this movie takes itself way too seriously, which harms the overall enjoyment, especially since it's not very competently made. The plane crash itself looked cheap and unconvincing, and the characters behave irrationally and stupidly. At times, it felt like a competition to see who could be the most unlikable, though one character was clearly way ahead of the others.

The acting ranged from decent to a little poor, but I wasn't expecting much in that department. While the basic premise is fun, the movie doesn't do much with the idea. It had the potential to be much better, but weak characters, poor writing, and some subpar effects held it back. It definitely borrows elements from other films like Rogue, The Grey, the already mentioned Cocaine Bear, and even Jurassic Park III. Those are all movies I love, but this one fails to entertain in the same way.

That being said, it's still a decent popcorn horror flick. If you don't overthink the logic or get too annoyed by the awful characters, you might have some fun with it. I overall enjoyed parts of it, and while the effects weren't great, they weren't Syfy-level bad either. The biggest downside is how unbearably stupid and annoying the characters are, making it really hard to root for most of them.

If you're looking for a genuinely good horror movie featuring alligators or crocodiles, I'd recommend Rogue, which has a similar premise but executes it far better. However, if you're just in the mood for a fun action-horror flick with killer alligators, this might do the trick. [5,1/10]

This is probably better than it deserves

I have seen Rogue. This is not Rogue. This is of a lower quality, and some of the stock-footage of the actual animals is annoying. Some of the cgi used for the animals is decent, way better than one might expect from a movie like this, which is a lovely surprise.

The characters are distinct and likable enough, and the actors do a good job of portraying them, giving them all enough life so that you can engage with them without overstaying or overstating them.

This is not as tight as some other croc-related movies like Lake Placid or Crawl, but it is certainly better than Primeval or Black Water.

This is enjoyable.

Routine film about reptilian monsters bloodily attacking to the injured passengers of a crashed plane.

Kyle, a biology student, travels with her friends to the Florida Keys to scatter the ashes of her brother Jamie, who died in a robbery accident. But the group decides to save time by traveling in a rather unsavory-looking small plane. Then the plane suffers a massive malfunction, all the passengers end up crashing on the swampy territory where the fearsome and monstrous alligators live. After that, they're repeatedly attacked by monstrous alligators . The alligators are hunting them, they must now face terrible enemies and find a way to get their safety and stay alive. They Were Here First Danger! Alligators are common in this area!. They can be dangerous!. They have been known to stalk prey!. Nature bites back !. They will hunt you If the storm doesn't get you... they will!. Swim Like Hell!. Watch Your Back Fear has found a new home !. Nothing seems to satisfy croc's ever-widening appetite !.

In ¨The Bayou¨ there are several vicious carnivorous animals causing bloody events and wreaking havoc with lots of gory scenes. It turns out to be the ordinary and already seen film about sea monsters attacking here and there. You already know that this movie is about alligators from Bayou swamps and terrorizing innocent victims. Athena Strates, a supporting actress who has appeared in films such as the new installment of the Hunger Games saga, Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds, stars in this film alongside the most aggressive reptiles of the dangerous wetlands.

The result is an unpretentious, slightly entertainment and at times effective treat. It packs a main and support cast plenty of unknown actors.

The film turns out to be mediocre and uneven, it adds nothing to what we have seen many times before and much better. The motion picture was averagely directed by Taneli Mustonen, Brad Watson.

The genre of giant crocodiles devouring innocent victims already has a long and curious filmography, among which I would highlight the following: "Alligator" (1980) by Lewis Teague with Robert Foster, Michael Gazzo, Dean Jagger, Sydney Lassick; "Alligator II: The Mutation" (1991) by John Hess with Joseph Bologna, Dee Wallace, Richard Lynch; "Primeval" (2007) by Michael Katlman with Dominic Purcell, Brooke Langton, Orlando Jones; "Rogue" (2007) by Greg McLean with Radha Mitchell, Michael Vartan, Sam Worthington; "Bait" (2012) by Kimble Rendall with Xavier Samuel, Sharni Vinson, Julian MacMahon, Adrian Pang . And "Crawl" (2019) by Alexandre Aja with Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper, Morfydd Clark.

Best Selling Films of 2025 in Malaysia already???

When the first teaser of this film came out in the "Pawagam", barely anyone who know this film, expect much. Most people don't know this film, It got dwarfed in marketing by film like Jurassic Park and Wolf Man who have much bigger budget. But The Bayou manage to defy the expectation, especially in this country.

The Bayou managed to defeat Perayaan Mati Rasa and Lembayung. Despite Indonesian films have very prestigious status in Malaysia. Two biggest attribute of it's success are the casting and sound design/music. I can guarantee 100% that most low budget film like this better than those DEI Roided "w0k333" movie out there. Well sometime we need to get out of the comfort zone.

The story is compact, the cast is fresh and music is just unique like the mish mash between some Malay Villager music with Navajo instrument.

Still... Aragao and the other cast is still too green, so i give it 8/10.

High Gator

My title review already explain it.

I'll try not to give any spoiler about the movie.

When i watch the trailer, i feel that this movie looks promising.

At first, u'll know why i use that as the title review. After that, the story goes along smoothly, the CGI looks good, the Sound effect and the jumpscares are ABSOLUTELY spot on (I love it).

Though there's some unnecessary scene (like wtf are u doing there), stupid act, and also kind of little bit rushed in the end.

Not bad for the casting, so overall its an average film.

Kudos for the sound effect So, if u wanna waste some time or money just to enjoy movie without thinking anything, this would be just enough.

AI-generated script?

It's a shame, really, because the acting, cinematography, and score are all fine for a Horror movie. But the script and the directing are terrible. The best actors on the planet couldn't make these character interactions make sense. They wouldn't be able to make the dialog work either.

There's nothing original in the script. It literally sounds like it was cobbled together by AI, from other movies.

I feel bad for the actors... they clearly were invested in doing their best.

Maybe it was made to be a tax write-off. I'm just rambling now because a certain number of characters (letters) is required.
