Javier Gutiérrez in Froid mortel (2021)
US Trailer for Prison Transport Action Thriller 'Below Zero' from Spain
Javier Gutiérrez in Froid mortel (2021)
"You did something, and we're not going to pay for it." Netflix has revealed an official US trailer for Below Zero, an action thriller from Catalonian filmmaker Lluís Quílez (Out of the Dark). In the middle of a foggy, cold night, a prison van carrying convicts is assaulted. The driver, Martin, will need to defend himself from those inside and those outside if he wants to make it out alive. This reminded me of Con Air at first glance, but with a big prison bus driving through winter in Spain. The film's cast includes Javier Gutiérrez, Àlex Monner, Patrick Criado, Édgar Vittorino, Karra Elejalde, Florin Opritescu, Luis Callejo, and Isak Férriz. This actually looks like an intense, chilly thriller to enjoy at home this winter. Fire it up below. Here's the official trailer (+ two Spanish posters) for Lluís Quílez's Below Zero, direct from YouTube: On a lonely road, a prison transport is brutally assaulted.

‘The Night Agent’ Political Thriller Drama Based On Book In Works From Shawn Ryan
Image
Shawn Ryan is adapting for television the 2020 novel The Night Agent by Matthew Quirk. The Shield creator revealed the project last night as part of a series of tweets about some the favorite books he read in 2020.

He listed The Night Agent in the category of “Books I read, Decided To Adapt For Television And May Have Already Finished Writing The Pilot Episode.”

I hear Ryan wrote the pilot script on spec at Sony Pictures TV where he is under an exclusive overall deal. The project is believed to be still in internal development and will be taken out in the new year. Ryan is executive producing via his MiddKid Productions, with the company’s Marney Hochman also expected to exec produce.

Published in October to strong reviews, Quirk’s The Night Agent has drawn comparisons to the early novels of John Grisham and David Baldacci. It centers on FBI...

Film Review: Out of the Dark (1995) by Jeffrey Lau
Image
The Chinese believe that when someone dies, one’s soul returns home on a certain night to say the final goodbye. This movie is about a returning grandma’s soul to an apartment block, where she blames her son and his wife for her death and seeks revenge. Not surprisingly, the Chinese title is rightfully translated as “Night of the Returning Soul”.

Throw in the commotion is Leon (Stephen Chow), an escaped mental patient who lives nearby, who fancies himself as a ghost buster and decides to help the security guards by teaching them ghost busting techniques. However, a half crazy, love torn local resident Kwan (Karen Mok) is also recruited and together they bond into a fearless team and take on the evil spirit which haunts the apartment with hilarious results.

Director Jeffrey Lau and Stephen Chow worked on a few films before but this is...

Henry Cavill Knocks DC Film ‘Style’ Up Until ‘Wonder Woman': ‘Hasn’t Necessarily Worked’
Henry Cavill at an event for Le Ministère de la Sale Guerre (2024)
Superman himself thinks the DC Extended Universe needs some fresh star power. In a recent interview with The Rake, Henry Cavill said that the “style” DC films were previously going for “hasn’t necessarily worked.” “It hasn’t given everyone that sensation which superheroes should give the viewer,” he said, adding that the stand-alone “Wonder Woman” movie featuring Gal Gadot did wonders to change that. Arizona Cardinals’ Drew Stanton Warms Up… in a Supergirl Outfit
Every week, the Arizona Cardinals quarterbacks hold a skills competition, with the loser having to wear a goofy costume. This week’s low man, Drew Stanton, had to wear a very “super” outfit to warmups on Sunday. Before the Cards’ game against the Los Angeles Rams in London, Stanton walked onto the field in a Supergirl costume, and pictures of the Qb’s look immediately went viral on Twitter. In past weeks, Stanton’s teammate, Matt Barkley, had to show off his underwear in a pair of very revealing getups. Also Read: 'Justice League': New Colorful Poster Brings...

Braving Chernobyl for Oscar-Shortlisted Post-Apocalyptic Short ‘Graffiti’ — Watch
Graffiti (2015)
It sounds inconceivable that the first high quality footage to come out of the Chernobyl nuclear accident site was shot by a crew of Spaniards. But that’s exactly how “Graffiti,” Participant Media’s Oscar entry for live-action short, got made.

The notorious nuclear disaster occurred in the now-abandoned town of Pripyat, Ukraine, which was the perfect setting for the post-apocalyptic drama about a man who fills his days tagging walls with graffiti and discovers he might not be as alone as he thought. Empty pools, dilapidated ferris wheels, and hollowed out Brutalist buildings provide a stunning backdrop for the messages he exchanges with a companion he never sees.

In a behind-the-scenes feature, Spanish director Lluis Quilez (“Out of the Dark”) explains how the intrepid crew surmounted understandable reservations to document the bleak and snowy town.

Pivot TV Shuts Down: Why Participant Media’s Millennial Cable Network Couldn’t Survive
Pivot just couldn’t pivot fast enough.

The small cable channel shuts down on Monday, ending its short life with the film “Good Night, and Good Luck,” the 2005 movie about Edward R. Murrow produced by Pivot owner Participant Media.

The movie’s title is an appropriate farewell for Pivot, and perhaps also serves as a message for the cable industry in general – as more networks face an uncertain future in the wake of so-called “skinny bundles” (cable packages with fewer channels) and the growth of cord-cutting.

“Some of the cable networks are pulling in very small audiences,” says one production chief whose company produced for Pivot. “How long do you stick with it?”

For Participant Media, it was just over three years. IndieWire spoke with past and present Pivot insiders about the network’s brief run, and the factors that led to its quick demise – although no one wanted to speak on the record,...

He Who Gets Slapped: The Original Creepy Clown Movie
Jim Knipfel Sep 5, 2019

With the release of It Chapter Two, we take a look at one of the first creepy clown films.

As a culture, we seriously hate our clowns. A deep-seated and supposedly irrational fear of clowns is so commonplace it’s even been given a scientific name: coulrophobia. It’s hardly a surprise then that angry, axe-wielding or merely creepy clowns would become such a pop cultural mainstay, from The Simpsons and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, and more recently from Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight to Stephen King’s It and It Chapter Two. Back in the day, the video store where I used to work carried (I counted) nineteen clown-themed horror movies, from Killer Klowns From Outer Space to Divine’s last film, Out of the Dark.

Evil Clown comics used to be a regular feature in National Lampoon. The 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs...

‘Out of the Dark’ DVD Review
Stars: Julia Stiles, Scott Speedman, Stephen Rea, Alejandro Furth, Frank Cuervo, Pixie Davies, Vanesa Tamayo | Written by Alex & David Pastor, Javier Gullón | Directed by Lluís Quílez

Two words for you. Killer kids. Ok, make it three: killer ghost kids!

Out of the Dark is the latest film from brothers Alex and David Pastor, the duo behind the 2013 Frightfest flick The Last Days, which was a post-apocalyptic story that ended with a bittersweet coda that featured children going forth into the world to kick start the population. And here the Pastor brothers once again weave children into their tale, this time with director Lluís Quílez at the helm, who himself – a 2nd unit director on another Frightfest flick, Painless – has dealt with his fair share of children in horror.

This time round the Spanish trio weave a horrific ghost story that sees Sara (Stiles) travels with her husband Paul (Speedman) and...

Julia Stiles Back For More Bourne
Julia Stiles
Talk about timing! Mere days after Empire talked to Julia Stiles about her latest film and discussed the chances of her returning to the Bourne franchise now that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are aboard, news arrives that she will indeed be back as Nicky Parsons. The nervy Nicky has been a presence in the three Jason Bourne-centric films, and becomes the first character beyond Damon’s to be confirmed for the latest, as-yet-untitled movie. Alicia Vikander is reportedly being sought to join them, but she hasn’t made any sort of deal just yet.As for what the formerly amnesiac superspy will be up against this time? Nothing has been revealed yet, though we do know that Greengrass is at work on the script with Christopher Rouse and Frank Marshall will be back in the producer’s chair. The new Bourne, whatever it may end up being called, is...

October Gale | Review
Perfect Storm: Mystery Tinged Romance from Nadda Gets Blown Away in Gusts

There’s much to admire in Montreal-born director Ruba Nadda’s latest film, October Gale, which reunites her with the Patricia Clarkson, star of her generally well-received 2009 film, Cairo Time. Nadda once again provides Clarkson with a melancholy tinged lead role that provides us with a framework that recalls classic ‘women’s pictures’ of the studio era, something we’d most likely have seen from a Cukor or Negulesco and starring the embittered likes of a Joan Crawford or Barbara Stanwyck. Clarkson evokes a softer sentimentality than those references, which may explain why many will be dismayed when the film suddenly becomes a romance tinged mystery thriller, only one that doesn’t want to sacrifice any of these particular elements and therefore tends to seem watered down on all fronts.

A Toronto doctor still grieving over the tragic...

Out Of The Dark (2014) – The Review
It’s been some time since I’ve had that feeling of being “had,” going into something with hopeful expectations, only to find out that it was all a ruse. Cinema is often like this, drawing us in, capturing our emotions and interests, even playing off our primal instincts. Michael Bay knows the mass loves explosions, so there are always plenty in his films, all of which appear int he films’ trailers. Trailers are another way that we, as viewers, can be duped. It’s a necessary evil, I suppose. The nature of the marketing beast that, inevitably, will always accompany the anticipation involved with being a movie watcher. This has become something of a cultural agreement of modern society. We tolerate in order to be entertained.

I find it “crazy” how individuals associated with one film, generally applauded for being a success, can turn around and be equally associated with a flop,...

Review: Out Of The Dark, Strong And Persuasive Suspense In South America
Attention, white people: Why do you keep going where you're not wanted? At first blush, Out of the Dark falls easily into the category of horror films in which white people -- usually Americans -- trespass into unknown territories, leading the natives to exact a terrible vengeance upon them. Sarah (Julia Stiles) and Paul (Scott Speedman) move to Colombia, South America with their young daughter Hannah (Pixie Davies). Sarah is meant to become manager of a large paper mill owned by her father, Jordan Harriman (Stephen Rea). The factory is the town's largest employer, and Jordan is proud of his accomplishments to benefit the local populace. Early signs point to trouble in paradise, however. The movie's prelude is filled with dark omens from decades past...

Creepy Children Abound in Out Of The Dark [Review]
What's worse: bad horror movies or mediocre ones that don't leave much of an impression. The latter is the case with Out of the Dark, the latest in a string of Spanish/American co-productions that see Hollywood stars making movies in English that only occasionally see any sort of substantial release in North America. The thing is, sometimes these movies are actually really great, as is the case with Red Lights (trailer) which blew me away when I finally caught up with in on home video a few years ago. This one? Not so much.

Out of the Dark stars Julia Stiles and Scott Speedman as Sarah and Paul Harriman, both actors who have appeared in their share of mediocr [Continued ...]...

The Stylishly Filmed Out of the Dark Is Scary, Too
Lluís Quílez
Tidy, conventional horror stories are all about cause and effect. The scariness derives from not understanding what's happening, and the resolution lies in discovering the causes. With its ghosts, its spooky old house, and the story's roots in the past sins of a town's founders, director Lluís Quílez's Out of the Dark is a horror film as uninterested in rocking that boat as a new hire at an investment bank. Sarah and Paul (Julia Stiles and Scott Speedman) move to Santa Clara, Colombia, with their adorable daughter Hannah, as Sarah is joining the executive staff at her father's company. They settle in to a great big house during the "Festival of the Saint's Children" — a joyous celebration of some kids who once got kidnapped and died in a fir...

Out Of The Dark: An Atmospheric but Predictable Horror Film [Review]
Q: When is a J-horror not a J-horror?

A: When it’s written and directed by a spanish team including David and Alex Pastor of Carriers and The Last Days fame and Javier Gullon, the writer of Enemy.

I don’t have a problem with mainstream horror movies as such. Of course, as with most of the people who frequent this site, I find that my tastes are satisfied by the films that exist a little more towards the fringe, but on the whole I find that even the most formulaic of horrors can provide some thrills and chills.

I say this because Out of the Dark is one of the most derivative and predictable horror films I’ve seen in a long time. Surprisingly (and perhaps the only surprising thing about this film othe [Continued ...]...
