Missing heart...

Could've been good but something's off kilter.

The best episode was the rodeo (5?) one. And what happened to the 2nd bad ombré?

Had a few good twists but missing chemistry.

Good actors in it but maybe it's the writing...because something doesn't gel. Sadly it's supposed to be Texas but filmed elsewhere. Hard to believe some events, as in aftermath of tornado; dang, the town cleaned up fast.

Not enough dance hall scenes; only saw one act. Later scenes looked like it was just a large diner.

There was a lot of hype for this but the series didn't live up to it. Yellowstone meets Virgin River? Nah. Hallmark version of Virgin River.

Lower those expectations

This is exactly why new shows shouldn't be compared to giants like Yellowstone. Ransom Canyon has its own vibe-definitely leaning into the soap opera lane and I'm not mad about it. I grew up on Days of Our Lives, so a little melodrama now and then feels like comfort food. Honestly, some of the plot twists had me half-expecting Stefano DiMera to walk in.

Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly as the leads, the chemistry is there, no doubt, but I found myself wanting just a little more from them emotionally. His brother-in-law, Davis, is a walking red flag-a full-blown nightmare, really. There's a brief moment where you think, maybe there's some goodness buried in there, but nope. Especially once he teams up with Staten's dad, who's just another barrel of bad decisions.

There are quite a few subplots woven in-Yancy and Ellie, the teenagers (Reid, Lucas, and Lauren)-and while they played into the main arc, some of their drama didn't land for me. A bit too much going on at times.

That said, I did enjoy the show. I'd absolutely tune in for season two. I went into it with zero expectations, which honestly helped. Trying to compare it to a juggernaut like Yellowstone or even Virgin River is just setting yourself up for disappointment. And let's be real, even Virgin River has its fair share of soap-level chaos.

I haven't read the books the show is based on-maybe I will, maybe I won't. Sometimes diving into the source material ruins the fun of the adaptation.

Bottom line: This isn't Yellowstone, it isn't Virgin River, and that's okay. It has potential, there's room to grow, and I'm rooting hard for Staten and Quinn. His grief-fueled stubbornness nearly drove me to drink, but I also totally got it. Grief does that-it hardens and isolates. I just hope he softens before she walks away for good.

So/So

As it's been said it's a Texas soap opera. The characters are half way interesting and the plot is there. It's an modern "Dallas" but with less polish. It's easy to watch and you can actually follow it while doing something else at the same time. It's not bad, it's just not particularly good. It has some decent photography and scenery and Josh Duhamel is easy on the eyes. It's an age old story of feuding families and has the heroes and villains. It's somewhat predictable and cheesy but mildly entertaining at the least. At least most of the actors are new faces and have some actual talent. It's not raunchy but does have some almost sex scenes and a few catastrophes thrown in to keep it moving. Not hard to follow.

Hate to love it, love to hate it? I can't decide!

This show is ALOT!... a lot of drama, a lot of poor choices, a lot of damaged people and a lot of hurt feelings.

This cast is mostly great, but there's something that just rubs me the wrong way and I can't figure out what.... Is it the writing? Is it the casting? Is it the character arcs? Is it poor acting? Is it a lack of chemistry?

It has so much potential.. but this is a lot of drama squeezed into ten episodes!

Like I know in real life people make poor choices and things get complicated, but this is a lot!

Individually the stories have glimmers and moments of greatness... but when they're all put together I don't know if it works? It's like the recipe isnt perfect?

I don't know, I feel perplexed... I binge watched the whole season and still have no idea if I like it or if I want more of it.

I don't know if this review helps anyone, but there it is! Haha!

Cheesy guilty pleasure

I mean its a netflix soap opera so it has the elements u expect with the cringey cheesy moments of the sort Dont expect excellent writing nor complex situations but if you are watching this i believe u wouldn't expect it all, you know exactly why u clicked on this show Virgin River style (although VR is definitely more wholesome and rounded) It delivers exactly what is expected I feel too much happens too soon too fast so who knows where its going but its an easy no brainer watch with likable cast predictable cliche stories I dint think its trying to be yellowstone bc it has a completely different mood and genre so not sure why ao many reviews mention that, i would never had even put them in the same level nor assumed that Its a dont use ur brain ans dint take it too seriously watch.

Loved it!!

If you're a fan of emotionally rich dramas like Yellowstone and Virgin River, this show is about to become your next obsession. While it begins with a slow burn, give it an episode or two and you'll be completely hooked. The storytelling draws you in gradually, but once it hits its stride, it doesn't let go. The cast is perfectly chosen, with each actor delivering a standout performance that feels authentic and deeply human. What really sets this show apart are the twists-unexpected turns that keep you guessing and emotionally invested from start to finish. It's the kind of series that quietly grabs hold of you and doesn't let go, full of heart, tension, and moments that stick with you long after the credits roll. Shows like Virgin River and Sullivan's Crossing have proven how powerful and popular this genre is-my wife watches them all and says this one absolutely holds its own. If you haven't seen those yet, do yourself a favor and check them out too-you'll see why I said what I said. Netflix, we need Season 2. This story deserves to continue, and fans like us are ready for more.

Gorgeous cast and setting

Gorgeous cast and setting with surprisingly great romances and intriguing Texas small town drama. I have been a Josh Duhamel fan since he was Leo duPres on All My Children 25 years ago because he's such a tall handsome dreamy leading man. And I have been a fan of Minka's ever since Friday Night Lights. Their incredible chemistry and relationship is the heart of the series for sure. There's so much longing and love there. Josh and Minka truly are incredible. Can't wait for more Quinn and Staten.

Also loooved the relationship between Ellie and Yancey, and Lucas and Lauren. Seriously, the romances and relationships on this series are so good, there really isn't a weak link at all in the bunch. The show is so SO bingeable and rewatchable. I want S2 now Netflix!!

Refreshing. No need to be another Yellowstone

The thing I love about this so far is it is not trying to be Yellowstone or any similar spinoff. It is more family friendly than Yellowstone. The content is not so heavy and depressing to get through. It is just what I felt it would be, a more mellow, enjoyable story with good acting that has kept me wanting to come back for each episode.

The acting by Josh D is great for his character. I feel they could have lingered on the events in his life early on a bit longer for an emotional connection it.

The feel of the show has a mild flavor of something like Virgin River, but not nearly as Hallmark feeling as that. This show in my opinion is right down the road of what fans of a western drama are looking for. Don't go into this show looking for the grit, turmoil, intensity of Yellowstone. Come with an open mind for something enjoyable, and just a good watch.

Pretty slow but it gets there

It is quite slow at first, but it gets better. This show is one of them where you're not really sure at the beginning, but then it gets better as it goes on. I think it's trying to be like Yellowstone, but it's nothing like it. If you're looking for a country, cowboy vibe type of show, this isn't really for you. If you're looking for a drama with a little bit of country vibe, this is probably gonna be your new obsession. I'm not gonna spoil anything, but let's just say the first 35 mins of the 1st episode is a little bit of a snooze fest. But, i will say no more, this is a watchable series to binge.

A lot of watching for nothing satisfying

First, to the reviewers/critics that suggest this is Yellowstone or Friday Night Lights.....you are simply off base. Yellowstone was 60% cowboy, 40% drama. FNL was 50% football, 50% drama. Ransom Canyon is 5% cowboy, 5% football, 20% drama and 70% melodrama/soap opera.

Secondly, there are probably 17 different subplots all trying to be developed over the episodes and only 2 of these are actually brought to a conclusion. I am thinking the producers/writers a must be looking for a second season renewal, but not sure I am willing to sit through all the one-step forward, two steps backward plot lines again.

Worse yet, the lead male and lead female compose only about 10% of the airtime....and their stories are left unsatifyingly hanging at the end. It was a very unsatisfying watch for me.

What it could have been

All in all I really enjoyed this but am frustrated because it had the potential to be great. Some great characters you will want to throttle while at the same time hoping they grow up and succeed. (And that's not the teenagers) Staten (Duhamel) Is a stubborn son of a gun and will infuriate you. David is a snake who I think really wants to be good. Quinn (Friday Night Lights, Minka Kelly) is great and holds the character curve together. If the writers had better character depth and slowed the plot down a bit this could have been something special. I felt the music was too overpowering at times and unnecessary but was great, just needs knocked down a notch or two. Will I watch Season 2 if it comes? Hell yeah!

An enjoyable series with good storylines set in the American South

Overview: This series is a fun and engaging drama set in Texas with real country elements on show. It is fairly similar to a number of other country dramas with fairly predictable storylines. However, it is still enjoyable with some really good performances.

Plot: The story starts with Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) a rancher in small town Texas whose wife and son have both passed away recently. After a period of reclusiveness, he renter's town society and new relationships are built and some rekindled. Amongst the personal drama, is the overarching big corporation who wants to buy all the farmland to build a pipeline.

Acting: Performances are generally good with all cast members pulling their weight.

Conclusion: Nothing to write home about but if you enjoy Southern dramas like I do then you will like this series.

7/10.

Yellowstone & Friday Night Lights had a baby

We watched this show in a few evenings as it was very addictive. A LOT happens in a short amount of time but that's probably what Netflix needed to get that second season going. The actors had some great chemistry!

As the title said.. the PG nature of the show was reminiscent of Friday Night Lights particularly with Minka in a lead role and you can't help but compare the two brothers to the Riggins brothers, and the ranch being taken by developers and the family infighting gave it some tame Yellowstone feel.

They left lots of story arcs wide open so we will be waiting impatiently to see what happens next.

Great show!

Geographically Confused

First of all, Ransom Canyon, Texas is just outside of Lubbock, Texas, about 250 miles from the Hill Country. "The primary filming locations were in and around Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Vegas, New Mexico. Additional locations included Bonanza Creek Ranch and Blame Her Ranch." This is like one of those lifetime movies and an obvious trope about a sad dad finding love and saving the ranch. I'm not sure why they had to film it in New Mexico, both Texas and NM have plenty of places to film this trope, I suspect there is a Red Blue reason. And New Mexico is where ALEC Baldwin shot and killed one of the crew while filming another western. Lots to think about, but all the stereotypes of Texas appear to be getting ticked. We stopped after a bit, not a fan but it might be ok for some.

Amazing acting and story

Everyone's different but to me I thought the show was absolutely amazing it blew me away I watched it all in one day. And I'm patiently waiting and hoping that Netflix picks it up for a second season. I know a lot of people come in here and complain about the show and say it's like a soap opera but I don't see it that way I see it as any other kind of show that's on TV only it's a western and there's a lot of love triangles but there's also character development and enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes. It's definitely something to watch. Knowing Netflix they normally don't pick shows up for a second season but I'm hoping that they will. I will definitely rewatch this.

Virgin river vibes but better. And I love VR.

So so good. Soapy, dramatic, but really nice to watch. It gives virgin river vibes but it is a western version with more serious story lines. I absolutely adore virgin River, but this one felt slightly more realistic than VR.

It has some cheesy storylines and soapy feeling character arcs but overall, it's a feel good show with a lot of heart and a fun watch. I got addicted to it pretty quickly. Don't listen to the people who are hating on it relentlessly. This show isn't bad at all. Watch more Than one episode and you won't regret it.

Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly have a lot of chemistry and are great leads as well.

Better than Virgin River

So far, this series is much better than Virgin River. The writing, characters, and acting are all just better. The characters are flawed but likable. The actors are a higher quality and not as cheesy. The cinematography is beautiful (much like Virgin River.) And there's just a hint of the feel of "Friday Night Lights." I really enjoyed the first season. My only worry is that it has already showed some signs of repetitiveness with the same couples breaking up and getting back together over and again because of a "misunderstanding," So I'm hoping that won't happen too often next season. Looking forward to it!

Corny & unrealistic, but has charm

The show is slow to start and doesn't explain the relationship between some of the characters. Learning eventually is fine, like with Lucas and Kit being brothers; but I didn't know the relationship between Staten and Davis until episode 9 or 10, when Davis mentions his sister. Also, this is supposed to be south/central or west Texas. Yet there aren't many Mexicans or Hispanics, at least not the title characters. Have you been to Texas? The person that plays Ellie Estevez is Dominican. The sheriff's deputy has a Hispanic surname, but looks Native America/Indigenous. I've never seen a Mexican American wearing turquoise jewelry. That's more of a New Mexico/Arizona thing by. Mexicans/Hispanics are part of the fabric of Texas. Though definitely not represented here. Typical Hollywood. I do like that the accents aren't overly done. Because I'm a native Texan and not all of us have a heavy drawl. The scenery is beautiful, but again, it's obvious that it's not in Texas. The romances may keep you interested, if they build more on character development.

I Wanted to Like This

Well.... I wanted to like it. Love Josh Duhamel. He and James Brolin give good performances, but they.can't act their way out of terrible writing.

The main plot through line about "Austin Water & Power" (we don't have combo utility entities in Texas) wanting to buy everyone and everything... for what reason?? Never made clear. Is it a pipeline? From where? But they are EVIL! They are going to "drain this county dry!".

What? That's not how it works people. At one point it's about buying a ranch outright, and the next scene they talk about saving the same ranch as a "legacy" for their kid. Huh? Also, utility company employees acting like mafioso is utter ridiculousness. Why would a public utility company spend tens of millions buying out entire ranches when they just need to run a pipe? Makes no sense.

The show looks great, but it doesn't look like Texas. Northern New Mexico does NOT look like the Texas Hill country. We don't have Rocky mountains in the background. Also do you think everyone in Texas lives on a massive ranch or a mobile home? Really?

The manufactured romances and intrigue they try to create are uninteresting and dull and plain silly. Everyone is unhappy all the time. There were also casting... issues- that I won't get into but irked me the whole time. Bleh.

. Sorry Netflix, it's a thumbs down from me.

Is it really necessary???

I was so excited when I saw the Ransom Canyon ad on Netflix. I was so looking forward to seeing some screen favorites once again. I am a big fan of Josh Duhamal and Philip Winchester.

Lizzy G. And Kate B. We're very good additions also. Lizzy was fantastic in AMLT.

I have binge watched all 10 episodes, but I am not sure about watching further. I was very disappointed in the language. The use of GD and F did NOT add to any story line content or to any character. Why use those words? Is it really necessary??!!!

I read one review that compares the show to Yellowstone. Well, I tried to watch Yellowstone, but turned it off soon afterwards due to the language. Even with Kevin Costner. I am not watching it. Contrary to what some statistics may show, people want good wholesome TV back in our homes.

So, to the writers of Ransom Canyon. Please take into consideration how these three words add or subtract from your beautiful writing. I hope after some thought you agree that these words really aren't necessary and they do NOT add anything to the fantastic content and writing that does exist in Ransom Canyon.

Thank for your time.
