Hello Go Nagai's Scary Zone my old friend
I've come to be made mildly uncomfortable by you again
Maybe knowing what to expect this time around made it a bit easier to handle, or maybe it just was better than the first bizarre entry in this low-budget horror series that I think now ends with Scary Zone 2. Scary Zone 3 would've been too frightening; the world just wasn't ready for it.
Story #1 has a couple of pervy lingering shots that are a bit weird, but it's other good b-grade stuff. A severed eye that still gets to see, and lets the body know where to go. And a guy, sans one eye, seeking revenge for being attacked, while also rescuing his girlfriend. It made me think of Troma, but not as painfully drawn out and maybe a bit funnier.
The second segment goes black and white again, just like the second segment in the first one of these. And it's technically a little classier in terms of presentation, but it's also not as crazy, and very much digs into an overly familiar horror situation (we are stranded, and we have to survive, and oh no, things are also scary). It's pretty ordinary.
Like the first time around, you get one untethered segment and one slightly more by-the-numbers segment. What a weird little project. This second one is better than the first duology, but not really by a whole lot; not enough to the point where this could be recommended to anyone who's not already a fan of no-budget "horror."
