Daaku Maharaaj: Stylish Balakrishna Shines, but a Familiar Tale Holds It Back

Nandamuri Balakrishna has been delivering solid mass entertainers since Akhanda. With a careful approach to script selection and collaborations with young directors, he's been connecting with a new generation of audiences. Expectations were naturally high for Daaku Maharaaj, especially with director Bobby, who previously delivered a blockbuster with Chiranjeevi. The trailer, packed with slick visuals and stylish sequences, only amplified the hype.

Balakrishna looks incredibly stylish in the first half, with cinematographer Vijay Karthik's striking visuals and dark tones giving the movie a Hollywood feel. Bobby's sleek direction and fresh presentation keep the first half engaging, despite the kid-sentiment subplot feeling repetitive-it's reminiscent of Balakrishna's previous film Bhagavat Kesari. Still, the stylish execution and the mystery surrounding Balakrishna's protection of the little girl maintain interest. The baby girl, who is central to the story, delivers a commendable performance. Urvashi Rautela's role feels unnecessary, but her glamorous presence caters to mass appeal. The "Dabidi Dibidi" song is a highlight for fans. Interestingly, the real heroines don't appear until the second half, an unusual choice. The interval bang, featuring the introduction of Bobby Deol as the antagonist, is well-executed and exciting.

The second half, however, falters. The setup of oppressed common people suffering under corrupt villains has been explored in countless films like Khaleja, KGF, and even the recent Saripodhaa Sanivaaram. The storyline lacks freshness, and themes of drugs and smuggling evoke comparisons to Vikram and Leo.

Among the heroines, only Shraddha Srinath gets a somewhat meaningful role, though her sudden brotherly bond with Balakrishna's character feels unconvincing. Pragya Jaiswal's character, unfortunately, lacks depth. Similarly, Bobby Deol's antagonist feels half-baked-his confrontation scenes with Balakrishna lack the impact they should have had. Balakrishna's Daaku persona is let down by weak makeup and inconsistent character depth. While his rugged look with a bull beard stands out, his clean-shaven appearance as an engineer doesn't quite fit the intense action sequences. The transformation into the Daaku could have been more gradual and impactful. Additionally, the scenes where his followers kneel in awe feel overly theatrical.

The remaining cast does their job adequately, but many actors sadly end up as padding artists, with little to contribute to the story.

Thaman's background score is one of the movie's strongest aspects. The Daaku theme is outstanding and at times feels reminiscent of Anirudh's style, showing Thaman's versatility. His music elevates many key moments. Vijay Karthik's cinematography is another highlight. His work, as seen in Jailer, brings a unique visual flair to Daaku Maharaaj. His use of color schemes and lighting makes Balakrishna's stylish portrayal stand out, especially in the first half.

Director Bobby aimed to repackage Balakrishna for Gen Z audiences with a stylish narrative and mass-elevation moments, and he succeeded in that regard. However, the film's story and core themes feel overly familiar, lacking the novelty to truly stand out.

You can watch Daaku Maharaaj for Balakrishna's new look, his signature dialogues, and the stylish execution. Just don't expect an innovative or groundbreaking story.

Mass entertainer with routine storyline

Routine south Indian movie, where hero fights to save a village or a family with some backstory and few elevation scenes.

Positives: 1. Balakrishna performance 2. Thaman background score 3. No cringe comedy between hero and other characters 4. No unnecessary between hero and heroine 5. All the elevations worked well because of Balayya's screen presence

Negatives: 1. No snakes and ladder game between hero and villain. Always hero wins as in all the south Indian movies 2. Few emotions didn't work well 3. Few scenes in the second half are not that engaging and felt bore 4. Multiple villains just to extend the storyline and have more fights 5. Few illogical scenes from direction point of view.

Bobby Deol the animal is back...

Bobby seems to have picked up where he left his villainous role in animal movie.

These type of movies need a ruthless villain and Bobby delivers, your all familiar with Balakrishna style, larger than life character.

The movie is a good weekend entertainer, with a recycled storyline of good vs evil.

The director's of south have found a winning formula of cramming 2 stories into one movie, although highly entertaining and your getting more movie for your buck. Not every movie can pull this off and this is where daaku maharaj leaves you yearning for more.

This movie would have been a solid 10 but, storyline seems rather rushed.

Urvashi Rautela's acting is a disaster

Urvashi Rautela is a flop actress and basically an item girl. They could have cast any nice South Indian heroine. She can neither act nor talk properly in interviews.

Movie is just average, nothing crazy good. Not even close to being a blockbuster. Script is okay, other actors have acted well but not earth shattering good. Dance moves are super cringe and you could get second hand embarrassment. Not suitable for kids. Just a plain movie but honestly it is a snooze fest. So yes think about it. Do you want to waste your lonely on an average film or would you rather binge watch Harry Potter at home? Most people would prefer the latter.

Repeated plot but still good 👍

I actually wanted to give a 6.5, since it's not possible, I gave it a 7. In first half, Protagonist does etc things like protecting, fighting, etc but doesn't give a proper reason. It captivates our curious minds. Second half gives a proper flashback and answers all our questions in the first half. In last 20 minutes of the movie, the plot comes to present time. Protagonist kills antagonist hence the movie ends 🤷. Just like the lead actor's N Balakrishna previous movies, he gets all that unnecessary hype like his entrances with sandstorm, earthquakes, etc. Despite these similarities, these movie's inner plot is interesting and has a strong sense of justice. Also there's no boring clips in the whole length. That's what actually makes it watchable despite it's repetitive plot.

Low effort scrap made watchable by its slick editing and cinematography

IDaaku Maharaaj is a new Telugu language movie directed by Bobby Kolli and it stars Balakrishna, Pragya Jaiswal, Shradha Srinath and Bobby Deol with a cameo appearance by Urvashi Rautela. This movie tracks well with Balakrishna template where he is introduced as nobody but has a flashback where was a savior of people and he unleashes that fierceness in the climax. No surprises there. This movie was as predictable as sunrise and sunset.

While there is nothing wrong with formulaic commercial mass movies, the way this particular movie is written is an insult to the audience. The makers planned a "high elevation" scene every 10 minutes where we see Balakrishna uttering a senseless "punch dialogue" to cater to the "masses" followed by equally senseless songs with disgusting lyrics disguised as "mass numbers" all the while aided by S. Thaman's raucous background score that he lifted from Anirudh's Jailer theme "Alapara" and Hans Zimmer's Dune desert bass. Fortunately, this movie was not as loud as his other recent works so that's a concession, I guess.

While the movie shows so many objectionable scenes, especially involving little girls and women, the audience have to come accept that these form the core of a "Balakrishna Template". This is an unfortunate development where the audience make this kind of low effort scrap a commercial success. I cringed a little every time Balakrishna spanks the female lead in the movie. If that is not enough, the director Bobby Kolli made a little girl, probably a 6 year old, spank the female lead for Balakrishna in the name of "mass". Not stopping there, the liberal use of double entendres which leave no room for imagination is low even for Balakrishna's standards. The screenplay leaves no element of surprise by providing you exactly what you'd expect to happen exactly at the time you'd expect to happen.

What felt fresh, again for a Balakrishna template, was the cinematography. They were more subdued than a typical Balakrishna movie. However, the color grading was all over the place. There are scenes where excessive grunge effect was applied turning blood into a black colored liquid, again, presumably, to appease to the masses I guess.

Bottomline: This movie was a low effort scrap that caters to very specific set of audience.

Pure entertainment

The story telling, what a pressentation of a cliche story line .. its fabulously crafted .. and the twists and film surprises, i knowingly dont want to give spoilers for those who havent watched and urging for not to check wikipedia or spoilers , the magic of the film is the journey with the characters found a complete strategically making of this film, casting artists from north indian cinema industry, but also keeping the values of south indian cinema .. i particularly love the way south indian film makers speak about the religion , belief and doesnt hesitate to speak , unlike bollywood where film makers take a middle route ..

Balayya in style

The first half of the movie delivers while the second half is a bit dragged. The portrayal of balayya is new and the director added the style and flavour of lokesh kanagaraj movies.

Balayya came out of his comfort to take such risk of making a movie that could have ended a disaster if not for Bobby koli. The acting is nice and music is good.

This movie proves that balayya is never in his peak but he is his peak. The movie did not miss the commercial elements. But urvashi rautela's role was shortened and it was good that way, otherwise it would have spoiled the work. Though it may feel overdramatic sometimes it is perfect for the sankranti season to have mass movie like this.

A good movie if you can enjoy keeping the logics and all other things behind. It was better than most balayya's movies in the past ten years.

I don't understand why people are so obsessed with other movies this sankranti because people were ready to see all the things balayya use to do back then but does not want to watch him in a role where he has the scope to act good which he did.

The movie is a surprise to me. Don't listen to the negative reviews and watch it with a blank mind.

But the balayya in the first half is fire. Want more like this from balayya.

Go and enjoy the movie.

Wasted

Sentence: If you are capable of torturing yourself with your mental health, then congratulations, this movie is for you.

Okay, telling you from the storyline, the movie started with a fight scene, which is a trimmed part of the middle portion to introduce the Protagonist. Then, how the movie turned out really puzzled me.

Talking about the Cast, Balakrishna's acting is good (5/10 stars), but the Hindi dubbing and dialogue delivery for the particular protagonist didn't blend well. Ravi kishan's acting is superb, and I enjoyed it. Urvashi's character is a Police Inspector, but I don't know if I'm blind; I didn't see her in uniform, and the way she portrayed her character is not justified. Lord Bobby's acting is also better than any others, but his screen time is too short.

Movie was great with lot of emotions as a Tamilian

Movie was great with a lot of emotions! As a Tamil movie watcher, I used to hate Telugu movies because of their lack of physics and excessive emotions, but this one truly made me enjoy the film. It had the perfect balance of action, drama, and sentiment, making it an epic watch! "Daaku Maharaaj" (2025) is an absolute cinematic spectacle! Nandamuri Balakrishna delivers a power-packed dual role, bringing both intensity and emotion to the screen. The gripping storyline, breathtaking action sequences, and electrifying BGM by Thaman elevate the film to another level. Bobby Deol's menacing presence adds depth to the narrative, while Shraddha Srinath and Pragya Jaiswal shine in their respective roles. The transformation into Daaku Maharaaj is nothing short of legendary, making this film an unforgettable experience.

"Balakrishna's Spectacle with Style: A Devoted Triumph Backed by Thaman's Rocking Score"

So in these tight competition of pongal releases at boxoffice i watched 'Daaku Maharaaj' starring Nandamuri Balakrishna in lead,Written and directed by Bobby(Ravindra Kolli). So if you ask me to describe my experience of watching this action drama in one line, without any hesitation this is that better balayya film we urged for but also surprisingly one of the finest technical work brought up in commercial cinema of telugu. Thaman stands out to be the biggest benchmark of film through his music,he literally conquered the whole show. Further going in detail, dividing the film into two halfs.

The first half is brilliantly crafted with racy screenplay, where the film is so fast paced and engaging that you wonder the interval was to quick, yet not only the interval sequence but the whole high moments placed in this half work very well. Keeping the dabidi dibidi song aside there was no irrelevant or uneccessary tropes introduced in the film, which makes this stand out from previous balayya films. Interval banger leaves you in a immense high.

Coming to the second half, the film's main conflict or basically the core of daaku is established. And this half may feel lengthy due to the predictable proceedings and conflicts take place, which are not new to us and we have been seeing them over the years. But it keeps you hooked throughout, and the climax ends in a decent way. But there is a sequence particularly in this half which completely stand out in whole film,in terms of balayya's performance and writing.

Coming to the performances, balayya was phenomenal. Not in just action setpieces or high moments, but also a emotional weightage he brings in few scenes were perfect. Undeniably one man show. And Bobby deol tries but the treatment or writing which was given to his character was underwhelming. Coming to the female leads,Both Pragya jaiswal and Shraddha srinath delivered decent performances.

Coming to technical aspects,if balayya is a devotion then ss thaman would be the greatest devote. His music was stands to be the backbone of film,it was just splendid. The adrenaline rush and the goosebumps served through his music is just exhilarating. The camera work of the film is just surprising and as discussed above one of the finest for commercial cinema,Vijay karthik kannan beautifully brings a essence and visual appeal for the film through his cinematography. Action choreography of film was perfect and there was no sequence felt over the top or illogical as previous ventures of balayya,it was grounded. The production values are biggest asset of film, kudos to producer Naga vamsi for me currently the most relevant and clever producer and production house. The craft and consistency brought up is just testament and and adore to profession.

Coming to writer and director Bobby, although there was no innovation in terms of plot taken it had that same basic formula, but he delivered that perfectly with good amount of highs throughout the movie. He had stick to the core and didn't dilute the script with uneccessary or over the top segments which makes this stand out in the filmography of actor. And the cinematic approach took to tell the story although regular with brilliant technicalities felt impressive.

At last,Daaku Maharaaj is that much needed balakrishna's substance with style where thaman holds you every moment through his rocking score. I don't know how the film resonates in digital watch. But for me it was a good theatrical watch!

Half baked Balayya mark movie

I don't know if it's too much to ask a basic, decent movie, with bare minimum emotional touch, watching big hero movie from Telugu is frustrating

Balakrishna does everything in his usual style, albeit with the loudness toned down. Urvashi's Butts has got more screentime than her face, Pragya does nothing, Shraddha Srinath surprisingly has got a decent role and did well. Bobby Deol except for fighting cigarettes does nothing.

Technically, movie is super slick with solid cinematography by Vijay Karthik, rousing score by Thaman, fair work by editor Ruben, production values are fine for a Balayya film.

Coming to writer-director Bobby Kolli, don't know how he keeps churning out such half baked movies on a consistent basis, might do commercially well, but they are far from satisfactory.

BOTTOMLINE : It's neither VIKRAM nor JAILER.

A Mass Masala Entertainer with Balakrishna's Signature Flair

"Daaku Maharaj" (2024) delivers exactly what you'd expect from a Nandamuri Balakrishna film: high-octane action, powerful dialogues, and a charismatic performance from the veteran actor. While the film may not break new ground in terms of storytelling, it offers an engaging and entertaining experience for fans of the genre.

Balakrishna commands the screen with his powerful presence and delivers a performance that is both intense and entertaining. He effortlessly switches between the roles of a ruthless daaku and a charismatic leader, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

The film's action sequences are a highlight, with stylishly choreographed fights and impressive stunts that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The cinematography is top-notch, capturing the grandeur of the sets and the intensity of the action with visual flair.

The music, composed by Thaman, adds to the film's overall energy and impact. The songs are catchy and well-integrated into the narrative, enhancing the emotional moments and adding to the entertainment value.

While the film's plot may not be particularly original, it serves as a solid foundation for Balakrishna's charismatic performance and the film's impressive action sequences. The narrative keeps you engaged with its twists and turns, and the climax delivers a satisfying resolution.

Overall, "Daaku Maharaj" is a mass masala entertainer that delivers on its promise of high-octane action and a charismatic performance from Balakrishna. While it may not reinvent the genre, it offers an engaging and entertaining cinematic experience that will satisfy fans of the actor and those seeking a dose of action-packed entertainment.

The same repeated storyline

Hindi cinema really needs to move beyond the tired trope of the one-man vigilante, the lone warrior and the hero single handedly taking on the world. Not only has it become predictable, but it's also unbearably boring.

This movie brings nothing new just the same recycled masala storyline that you've already seen in some form or another. As for Nandamuri Balakrishna, he has certainly reached an age where leading roles like this no longer suit him. An out of shape, visibly aging actor clinging to such scripts does more harm than good. Why keep emphasizing his age? Well, what else can you say when he has to perform dance moves while sitting on a chair?

And then there's Urvashi Rautela, did she even get paid for anything other than unnecessary skin show, leading to unwanted vulgarity? In one word, she has "ridiculed" herself.

As for Bobby Deol, the audience was far more entertained reminiscing about his performance in Animal rather than anything he did in this film.

In short, there's absolutely nothing new here, just an incoherent mess of a storyline that keeps jumping from one plot point to another, only to end up being completely meaningless. A total waste of time.

Daaku Mahraaj ❌ Ghanta Mahraaj ✅

Means what to say man? Literally i don't have any words to say about this kachra. Literally torture on braincells. Direction wise and story wise this movie is an absolute blunder. What's the story? Same typical Tamil movie concept, evil corporate and oppressed people that's it. Means there's no creativity, no uniqueness nothing. Another worst part, Urvashi Rautela. Means they said, "we removed Dabidi Dibidi song and some parts of Urvashi Rautela". But if you see the movie those stuff are still there not removed. There's a limit of uttering lies. And Balayya sir, still wants to make chemistry with young actresses? Stop this and start taking family man roles this will be better for you.

Surprisingly good

Frankly, I don't have high expectations for this movie. After one of my friends insisted that I watch it, I went to the theater, and oh boy, what an experience it was! The racy editing, Thaman BGM, and cinematography were all executed perfectly. The theater experience was next level. It would be great if Balayya chooses scripts like this in the future that don't have unnecessary scenes between him and the heroines or forced comedy.

It reminded me of Balayya's peak during the early 2000s. Bobby understands the strengths of the hero and he elevates them exceptionally well. I believe this will be the biggest blockbuster for this Sankranthi.

Predictably boring

Firstly the protagonist looks so unfit, overly maked up to cover is oldness. Now to the movie, the storyline is a repeated concept in Indian movies over and over and over again.thirdly this is 2025 am sure India movie loves have outgrown the concept of seeing godlike individuals in every action movies I know Indian film directors like remaking Hollywood movies but can't they just copy how Hollywood action have move from actors like Arnold and muscular men to heroine like keanu reaves... lastly the some scenes starting from the little girl stopping the driver because of a rabbit to leaving the car to purse the rabbit to the villain layout looks so stop and lacks creativity. This should not be on Netflix.

Fantastic movie with an excellent and power packed performance by Balayya garu and Lord Bobby sir and terrific BGM by Thaman!!!

Balayya garu as Nanaji was good but as Daaku Maharaaj, he's absolutely amazing and fierce!!! Career best performance!

Lord Bobby sir as the main villain was fantastic, even though he comes in the last few minutes of the first half he was great but in the second half he's got plenty of screen time and what powerful and menacing acting, his confrontation scenes with Balayya garu were too good!

Pragya Jaiswal and Shraddha Srinath were great in their roles and weren't used as glamour dolls, they were given perfect roles! Except Urvashi was just nothing but a glamour doll with zero acting talent, her role was a waste and wasn't even necessary!

Writing was decent and direction by Bobby garu was terrific, loved the cinematography and the fantastic action scenes! The BGM by Thaman anna completely uplifts the film and is fire!!

Must watch for Balayya garu and Lord Bobby sir and the fantastic BGM!

Disappointing

Daaku Maharaaj - A Disappointing Watch

Daaku Maharaaj is yet another formulaic action film that fails to bring anything new to the table. The story is predictable, the action sequences are over-the-top, and the dialogues feel repetitive. It follows the same tired formula of mass entertainers, offering nothing fresh for audiences who have seen these tropes countless times before.

One of the most baffling aspects of the film is the romantic subplot. A 64-year-old protagonist being paired with a much younger actress feels forced and unnecessary. In reality, reports suggest that the lead actor paid the actress 3 crore for this role, making it seem like a self-indulgent move rather than a genuine creative choice. This not only disrupts the film's believability but also raises questions about the industry's priorities.

Despite these flaws, the cinematography stands out as a rare positive. The cameraman does an excellent job capturing the action and visuals, making the film look polished even when the storytelling falls flat. However, no amount of great visuals can save a film bogged down by weak execution and outdated storytelling.

Overall, Daaku Maharaaj is a forgettable film that relies on the same old tricks without offering anything innovative. Fans of mass action films might tolerate it, but for most viewers, it's a tedious watch.

Do not mess with the lion in him.

Short Take -

The God of Masses gets to play a civil engineer Seetharam who is forced to become Daaku Maharaaj for the sake of people from Bajrangpur in Chambal. In 1996, Krishnamurthy and his family, especially his granddaughter Vaishnavi are targeted by local MLA / goon and Maharaaj has to be broken out of prison to safeguard them. He has vowed to protect Vaishnavi forever. This brings him face to face with the Thakurs. What is the main conflict between him and the Thakurs? Why did he turn into a vigilante Daaku Maharaaj, leaving his civil engineer life? The answers to these lies in the second half and how does he resolve the issues, forms remaining part of the story.

Bobby Kolli knows the strengths of NBK and plays it to the gallery. There is nothing new in terms of his story and screenplay but that doesn't deter him from fully committing to the script in hand. It is meant to entertain and please the fans, that is exactly what the film does. Visually the film looks grand and kudos to the production team for pulling it off. The clean shaven look of NBK is the real highlight. There are half a dozen baddies in the film to keep raising their voice, only to be silenced by NBK. Logic has no place in a commercial entertainer, the screenplay does lose it's steam before the final act and there are no twists in the tale. With the antagonists being no match to the hero, Daaku Maharaaj had to do 105cr in the weekend itself, showering expensive gifts to Urvashi by her parents...

1 time watch but i have some other issue

Overall, the movie is good, and the screenplay is excellent. However, I watched it in Hindi dubbing, which was not up to the mark. One thing that stood out to me was the way the film portrayed characters with the 'Thakur' surname as negative figures. While this is just a part of the storyline, I've noticed a similar trend in South Indian films, like *Pushpa*, where villains are often depicted from a Rajput background. This kind of portrayal can create a negative perception and set a biased narrative against the community. The Rajput community has contributed immensely to India, including its democratic foundations, by making sacrifices and integrating the nation. Every community deserves respect, and filmmakers should be mindful of this. Instead of associating villains with specific surnames or castes, they should create characters that don't generalize or stereotype any particular group.

Fever's Game Changer: The Power of Dolo 650

I usually don't watch Balakrishna's movies, but let me tell you, this one completely changed my perspective. Despite being extremely tired and barely able to walk after two exhausting days, I joined a friend who had booked tickets for Daaku Maharaj. And wow-what an experience!

This movie turned me into a fan of NTR Balakrishna. The background music (BGM) was simply phenomenal, and Balakrishna's dedication and hard work were evident in every scene. The movie was so engaging that I didn't feel bored for even a moment. The screenplay and direction were flawless-an absolute 10/10.

The storyline is unpredictable, keeping you hooked till the end. I especially loved the "Dabidi Dibidi" song-it's a standout track and, in my opinion, miles better than the item song from Pushpa 2.

This is a film that deserves to be watched on the big screen. Trust me, it's a must-watch!

Ruined the cast

Daaku Maharaj" delivers a chaotic blend of action, drama, and...well, let's just say "unique" performances. The film certainly doesn't lack for energy, and the story, while a bit convoluted, manages to hold your attention. The cinematography captures the rustic setting well, and some of the action sequences are genuinely thrilling.

However, the film is significantly hampered by some uneven acting. While some of the cast members deliver solid performances, Urvashi Rautela's portrayal is, unfortunately, a major distraction. Her performance veers into the realm of cringe-worthy, with exaggerated expressions and a delivery that feels painfully forced. It's a shame, as the character had potential, but the execution falls flat.

Despite this significant flaw, "Daaku Maharaj" manages to be entertaining in its own bizarre way. If you're willing to overlook the moments of truly bad acting and embrace the film's over-the-top nature, you might find yourself enjoying the ride. Just be prepared for some serious eye-rolling. 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 for the sheer audacity.
