Writer/director Aimee Kuge was inspired by a story she overheard at a party about a bad Tinder date, wherein a young woman went to a man's house to have a home-cooked meal. After dinner, he told her she couldn't stay over. The young woman went home, but experienced a bad stomach ache the following day. It got so intense that she went to the ER, where she was told the contents of the food she consumed had human DNA in it. Kuge didn't know if the story was true, but it inspired her to write this script.
The company Mark works for, Yellow Mitten, is a play on the company Blue Apron.
The flashbacks of Ash's past in Louisiana were filmed with a super 8 camera at April Consalo's parents' house in Vero Beach, Florida. Writer/director Aimee Kuge did all of the special effects for these scenes herself.
Writer/director Aimee Kuge considers the film an allegory for toxic romance. Ash literally consumes flesh, and figuratively consumes Mark's life.
Ash's little sister Allie was played by actress April Consalo's real younger sister, Autumn Consalo.
