Nick Kroll Opens Up About Orchestrating John Mulaney’s Drug Intervention in 2020: ‘I Was So Deeply Scared He Was Gonna Die’
Image
Nick Kroll appeared on the latest episode of the “Armchair Expert” podcast with Dax Shepard and got candid about orchestrating a drug intervention in 2020 for his friend and frequent collaborator John Mulaney. The intervention took place during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It was so scary and brutal to go through,” Kroll recalled. “He was in New York. I was in L.A. It was at the height of the pandemic. So it was incredibly stressful to be in the midst of that, trying to literally coordinate and produce an intervention, bringing a bunch of people together — friends from college, other close friends.”

Compounding the stress was Kroll’s personal life. His wife was nearing the birth of their child, and he was in production on Olivia Wilde’s film “Don’t Worry Darling,” a project already plagued by tabloid drama. “There was no stress there,” he joked before admitting,...

Chris Rock, John Mulaney Among Top Contenders in New Golden Globes Stand-Up Category
Image
In addition to a top-to-bottom organization overall, the Golden Globes has added two new categories for its next awards, for cinematic and box office achievement and stand-up comedy performance on television.

The creation for a box office achievement award is clearly a move to attract viewers who have tuned out kudofests in recent decades because they tend to focus on little-seen movies. The category honors artistically outstanding films that have grossed more than $150 million, with at least $100 million coming from the domestic box office, or have commensurate streaming viewership confirmed by a “trusted industry source.” Films released after Nov. 22 may qualify if their projected box office or viewership meets the benchmarks.

The field of contenders is surprisingly wide, with no fewer than 20 films eligible as of November, ranging from horror films, Marvel and DC Universe movies, action spectaculars and kid-friendly titles (including “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Elemental”) to...

20 Best Stand Up Comedy Specials
Image
John Mulaney's "Baby J" is a painfully honest and hilarious exploration of his drug problems and rehab stint, proving he's still one of the funniest comedians today. Norm MacDonald's "Nothing Special" is a unique and poignant special recorded from his home without an audience, showcasing his comedic genius and earning three Emmy nominations. Paula Poundstone's "Cats, Cops, And Stuff" demonstrates her mastery of crowd work and storytelling, making her a standup legend and a joy to watch.

The best comedy specials of all time highlight the true art form of standup comedy and the many talents in the industry. Determining the best standup special is a question that has never failed to elicit debate among long-time audiences. A lot of them come from what many consider to be comedy's Golden Age, the '70s - dominated by the likes of Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Andy Kaufman, Richard Lewis,...

How John Mulaney’s Tales of Drugs and Rehab Became Intimate Netflix Special ‘Baby J’
Image
This story about “John Mulaney: Baby J” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

One man. By himself. On a stage. Talking.

That’s what director Alex Timbers had to work with on “John Mulaney: Baby J,” a Netflix standup comedy special in which actor and comic John Mulaney spends 80 minutes telling a Boston audience about his harrowing trip through drug addiction and into rehab. The elements were simpler than what Timbers had to work with when he directed “Beetlejuice” and “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” on Broadway or served as production consultant on David Byrne’s “American Utopia” or cocreator on the TV series “Mozart in the Jungle,” but it wasn’t unfamiliar territory to the director who had also filmed Mulaney’s 2018 standup special, “John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous” at Radio City.

“You’re trying to fundamentally create the...

2023 Emmy Predictions: Best Variety Special Writing
Image
Based on Gold Derby’s odds, one of the absolute tightest 2023 Creative Arts Emmy races involves Best Variety Special Writing contenders Chris Rock and John Mulaney, both of whom have previously conquered the category and are now facing off for the first time ever. Having both pushed their comedy to new levels of boldness in their respective Netflix specials “Selective Outrage” and “Baby J,” they provide voters with a truly tough choice when it comes to honoring the most impressive writing of the year.

This contest is made even more interesting by the fact that Rock and Wanda Sykes (“I’m an Entertainer”) are competing against each other after jointly earning four writing nominations and one win for “The Chris Rock Show” over two decades ago. Also included in this lineup are the sketch comedy special “Would It Kill You to Laugh?” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love....

2023 Emmy Predictions: Best Pre-Recorded Variety Special
Image
Although the Emmy Award for Best Pre-Recorded Variety Special has not gone to a retrospective program of any kind since the category was established in 2018, several such winners were crowned over the preceding decades when all variety specials competed for the same prize. This year’s pre-recorded program lineup happens to include two televised celebrations of industry legends, one of which – “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” – is heavily favored to become the first special of its kind to achieve this exact honor.

The other commemorative special that could block the Burnett one’s path to victory is “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter.” Based on the untested nature of their format, both will have to watch out for every one of their fellow nominees, which include “Lizzo: Live in Concert” and Netflix stand-up specials starring John Mulaney, Trevor Noah, and Wanda Sykes.

In order to...

The Weeknd, Dolly Parton, Common, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Among Entries in Emmy’s Music Categories
Image
Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.

That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.

Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.

The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

Most of the big-name performers have entered the song category...

‘Awards Chatter’ Podcast [Live] — John Mulaney (‘John Mulaney: Baby J’)
Image
John Mulaney, the guest on this milestone 500th episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the most popular and respected comedians of his generation. He’s a 40-year-old comedian, writer, producer and actor who already has to his name a Peabody Award and 18 Emmy nominations, two of which resulted in wins.

Mulaney, who was born and raised in Chicago, landed a writing job at Saturday Night Live at just 25. There, he co-created, with Bill Hader, one of the show’s most beloved characters, Stefon; and he has often since returned to the show to host the show, becoming a member of its “Five-Timers Club” whose almost annual appearances, to quote The New York Times, “have become one of the show’s more enjoyable traditions in this current era of its history.”

But Mulaney is best known for his standup, including five televised specials, the most...

Apple has good reason to hit that “Believe” poster. “Ted Lasso” has hit a series high with the seventh episode of Season 3 clocking in at 795 million minutes viewed.

This triumph is based on a Nielsen report that measured total minutes viewed for streaming shows during the week of April 24–April 30. It also marks a steady increase in viewership for the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ darling.

‘John Mulaney: Baby J’ Debuts on Streaming Charts
Image
John Mulaney’s first stand-up comedy special in five years got off to a solid start on Netflix.

The special, John Mulaney: Baby J, gathered 379 million minutes of viewing for the week of April 24-30, ranking 10th among original series (it premiered on April 25). It’s the second stand-up special to make the Nielsen streaming rankings this year, after Chris Rock: Selective Outrage. The latter, Netflix’s first live stand-up special, opened with 418 million minutes (albeit over less than 36 hours from its March 4 premiere) and grew to 798 million the following week.

The Diplomat was the No. 1 overall title for the second week in a row. The Netflix political drama starring Keri Russell grew by about 7 percent week to week, hitting 1.39 billion minutes of watch time. The back half of Firefly Lane’s second (and final) season pushed that show over the billion-minute mark as well; it recorded 1.11 billion minutes of viewing.

Emmy Season One Week Into WGA Strike: Business as Unusual
Image
“Shoutout to writers,” exclaimed Jason Sudeikis, on stage with much of the cast and creative team behind “Ted Lasso” for a fan event that would kick off the opening of the “Think Apple TV+ FYC” space. “What a day to be doing this.”

Mere hours later, at the stroke of midnight on May 2, the Writers Guild of America would decide to officially go on strike, calling for its members nationwide to enforce a work stoppage. However, it was not clear until that following afternoon what the guidance was for participating in For Your Consideration events meant to highlight the work they already accomplished this TV season.

The conclusion the union came to in terms of members attending film festivals or FYC events for a film or a show they wrote on, as published in the WGA Strike Rules Faq, was “You should let the Company know you are prohibited from...

‘John Mulaney: Baby J’: An innovative performance poised for Emmy liftoff
Image
Baby J is back on the streets! Five years after the immense success of his special “Kid Gorgeous,” John Mulaney returned with his third Netflix comedy special “John Mulaney: Baby J” on April 25. Previously titled “From Scratch” during his comedy tour, the show provides insight into Mulaney’s high-profile, scandal-laden year. A public stint in rehab, a divorce announcement, and a surprise baby turned the comedy star into a tabloid talking point.

The 80-minute special provides further evidence of Mulaney’s considerable talent as a comedian. There’s no denying the man knows how to craft a joke and deliver a punch-line. His manner of speech and delivery has made him a unique voice and accelerated his success. “Baby J” contains some excellently conceived bits including his star-studded intervention, the frustration of not being recognized at rehab and his quest to quickly buy and sell a Rolex for drug money.

“It was shortly after the SNL 40th anniversary,” Mulaney said during an appearance on Doug Herzog and Jen Chaney’s Basic! podcast. “I had a sitcom on Fox. They’d aired all 13 [episodes], but it was canceled. It didn’t do good numbers, but at least critics reviled it. So, it was a fun time.”

The Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers voice star recalled when then-president of Comedy Central, Kent Alterman, asked Mulaney if he wanted to take on the hosting role following Stewart’s departure.

“I was extremely flattered that y’all were asking me about it,” Mulaney said. “I sensed they would be big shoes to fill.

What to watch this weekend April 28, 2023: TV awards contenders
Image
If you missed Hulu’s dramatization of the infamous Candy Montgomery murder case last year, don’t fret. HBO Max is here with “Love & Death,” its version of the horrific but true story starring Elizabeth Olsen as Montgomery, the 1980s Texas housewife accused of murdering her best friend (portrayed by Lily Rabe) after having an affair with her husband (Jesse Plemons). The limited series, which debuted April 27 with three episodes, is a showcase for Olsen and a reminder to Emmy voters that maybe they should’ve awarded her powerful performance as a grieving Wanda Maximoff on Marvel’s Disney+ series “WandaVision.” She alone is the reason that “Love & Death” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

John Mulaney’s New Netflix Special Is a Critical Reminder About Celebrity
Image
In John Mulaney’s own words, likability is a jail.

The comedian’s latest standup special “Baby J,” directed by Alex Timbers and executive produced by Timbers and Mulaney, spends over an hour ensconcing viewers in Mulaney’s familiar humor and rhythm, but takes a difficult look inward at his immense fame and the very-public turbulence in his personal life since the pandemic.

Mulaney is not the first celebrity to fall off a pedestal nor will he be the last. The internet era lends itself to microscopic levels of scrutiny for public figures, from politicians to comedians to influencers. In just a few years — as he notes in his opening, sing-song style — Mulaney got divorced, went to rehab, and became a father. As each of these events came to light, his loyal online fan base was made increasingly aware of something that had always been true: We don’t really know celebrities.

John Mulaney Addresses His “Star-Studded” Intervention, Rehab and Son in New Special ‘Baby J’
Image
John Mulaney details the intervention that kicked off a personal reset and several years of “work on myself” in his latest comedy special, John Mulaney: Baby J.

“The past couple of years I’ve done a lot of work on myself,” he says at the top of his fourth Netflix special and the first since his stay in a drug rehabilitation facility, which saw him spend two months in a Pennsylvania rehab. “I’ve realized that I’ll be fine as long as I get constant attention.”

The joke alludes to all the media coverage around the comedian, garnered primarily between 2020 and 2022 in relation to his drug misuse and treatment, as well as the birth of his son with actress Olivia Munn and his high-profile divorce from ex-wife Anna Marie Tendler. Mulaney had already addressed these topics to varying degrees most notably during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers.

John Mulaney Details The ‘Star-Studded’ Intervention That ‘Saved’ His Life In New Comedy Special
Image
John Mulaney is opening up about the intervention that saved his life.

In his new Netflix comedy special, “John Mulaney: Baby J”, Mulaney got candid about the changes in his life over the last few years, including a stint in rehab and the intervention with his famous friends that got him there.

Mulaney admitted that he was addicted to a cocktail of drugs, and was heavily using cocaine when a group of 12 friends in the comedy community gathered together in person in New York and over Zoom, under the guise of “dinner with a friend from college,” to encourage him to enter rehab.

Calling it the “‘We Are the World'” of alternative comedians over 40,” Mulaney said everyone from Fred Armisen to Nick Kroll were on hand to voice their concern over Mulaney’s well-being.

“Let me just call this out now, I don’t mean to be weird. It was a star-studded intervention.

‘Baby J’: John Mulaney Makes Beautiful Comedy Out of His Addiction Struggles
Image
It’s been a turbulent few years for John Mulaney, the former SNL writer and ace stand-up comic. In December 2020, Mulaney’s pals — Seth Meyers, Bill Hader, and Fred Armisen among them — staged an intervention, prompting the comic to check into a rehab facility for addiction to alcohol, cocaine, and prescription drugs. He left two months later, and in May 2021, announced that he would be separating from his wife of nearly seven years, Annamarie Tendler, who’d been such a fixture in his stand-up sets and social media channels that...

Emmys: Netflix Kicks Off Campaign Season with ‘Wednesday’ Stunt, Relocates ‘FYSee Space’ (Exclusive)
Image
Netflix, perennially a key player in the Emmy race, is launching its 2023 Emmy campaigns on Wednesday with a, well, Wednesday-themed stunt.

Indeed, many voters and tastemakers will receive a hump-day visit — and hand-delivery of goodies — from a trio associated with the streamer’s hit comedy series: “Lurch,” the Addams family’s butler, who will be driving a class black 1930s hearse; “Wednesday Addams,” the titular teenager with psychic powers; and “Thing,” the sentient disembodied hand.

Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, Netflix will — for the fifth year in a row, but for the first year at Red Studios at 846 N. Cahuenga Blvd. in Los Angeles — welcome TV Academy members to an elaborate “FYSee Space” at which it will showcase activations and host star-studded panels and performances in promotion of its numerous Emmy hopefuls. The FYSee Space will be open from Friday, May 5 through Friday, May 26.

Netflix’s top Emmy contenders this season — among them Wednesday,...
