Boring and clumsy

I had really been looking forward to this, nordic crime, as so often before, and hopefully as good as usual.

But despite a good story, based on a popular book, a cast that seems to deliver, even if not big stars, it ends up boring, because so little happens, way to many empty pauses, and characters that stare empty into the void. If the series was shorted by one third, it would work.

On top of that, lines that is too much, that no one would say in real life, and is too clumsy. Sometime I wonder if the book has a deeper layer, that the movie never dig enough into and we therefore do not understand. Instead we hear actors say sentences that is not really connected to anything and sound like a cliche.

It is not all bad, after all I watched it to the end. It's just never really good. Maybe I should read the book.

Slug's Paced "thriller"

So they skimped on an editor - a shame. Could've worked in four episodes. Way too slow paced. The last two episodes, where you'd expect it to become exciting, 'thrilling' it completely deflates and leaves the viewers in this household yawning and glancing at their phones. The author surely can't be pleased with the result? The actors all do their best to make this glacier-moving narrative work, but have apparently all been told to speak excruciatingly slowly. If you have the time, then give it a go, but if you don't need to have everything repeated and regurgitated for you again and again, then give it a miss.

Fatal Crossing

Journalist Nora Sand has to step back from her prestigious London job after getting romantically involved with a person she was investigating. She returns to her home town in Denmark and shortly after her arrival an unknown person places an envelope containing photographs in her letter box. They are of two girls who vanished from a ferry on a school trip to England in 1980. She determines to investigate; in the process uncovering various long hidden secrets. At the same time another teenage girl goes missing; is there a connection?

I thought this was a decent enough mystery series. It may not be the best of the ever growing number of Nordic dramas available to watch in the UK but the story is solid and had some good twists that I hadn't really expected. The protagonist is a little difficult to like; especially early on as she manages to annoy many people she interacts with. However by the time she was in danger towards the end I did worry about how things would turn out. Early on it is a little slow moving but the finale is genuinely tense and claustrophobic. The cast does a solid job bringing the characters to life. Overall a decent enough addition to the Nordic Noir genre; worth a watch if you enjoy such series.

These comments are based on watching the series in Danish with English subtitles.

Please don't

I can't even begin to describe what a massive disappointment this show is, no amount of words would be too much.

I remember reading an uncomplimentary review and thinking 'it cannot possibly be this bad, I watched many shows that others thought to be bad but I enjoyed', and I started watching the first episode, and it looked bright and well made and I thought 'this is going to be an interesting watch' but then I got to episode two and it's all slow talking and slow thinking and slow standing and slow looking at things, and there is no reality in which a child goes missing and the police doesn't even bother to investigate, that's when I realised I was watching not only the most boring show in the history of television but also the most unbelievable one.

I hope you read this and go 'this was the most boring review I ever read'. I'm sorry, I was only trying to give you an idea what it's like watching this trash.

Slow-paced thriller with more psychological suspense than thrill

Streaming on Channel 4 (UK) made the slow paced thriller even slower.

The frequent adds, and the glitches at times in the streaming made this a difficult watch. I can't really take away stars from the film for reasons outside the film makers control, but it did impact on my enjoyment watching this.

I'll take one star away because of the ending, as it it just didn't meet my expectations.

I'll take another because it simply was a tad to slow at times. Like unnatural long pauses in phone calls. Only example I can give to avoid spoilers.

Another star is deducted because of the filming. At first I made excuses it was an old production but it appears from 2023, so a bit too old school or low budget.

The story line had potential but falls short at times, the yet another star deducted.

The acting is not great performance either, a final star deducted.

I'll leave the remaining 5, as I did watch it to the end. The plot delivers twists and turns and all sorts that belongs to a decent thriller, and it could have had great potential. At least it's a mini series with no cliffhangers.

I'll give it an extra star because it is a Danish series jumping it to six stars.

Not worth watching

Very poorly scripted, with too many plot holes and unrealistic plot behaviour. Foreign viewers may not notice the theatrically presented lines and artificial lines, but a Danish viewer will quickly notice. Foreign viewers will, however, notice how slooooowlyy things move. The 8 x 40 minutes could easily have been reduced to half without losing anything. But not even that would make it worth watching due to the poor and unbelievable plot. I never understood why film makers don't have professionals proof read their scripts before thet start filming, among others to check if the behaviour of the poliecemen is at least remotely plausible.

Worth Watching

After seeing the negative comments I decided to write a review about this series. Well, some of these comments are indeed true, such as being too slow and having plot holes, but if you like big twists and turns, this is one of those series you are looking for. Therefore, the series may not mean anything to the viewers until the sixth episode. Marie Sando Jondal gives a great performance and plays the lead character, journalist Nora Sand. This series is worth watching and I rate it 7 out of 10. Finally, please write a review here after learning the difference between Danish and Norwegian I am not DANISH but at least I know from checking on IMDb and Google that this series is not NORWEGIAN.

Boring clumsy direction

I felt hesitant from the very beginning. My intuiton was telling me to stop every 15min because of the bad direction. I have no clue why I ended up watched the whole thing.. The direction and script is awkward, clumsy and has strange "staged" long breaks and pauses that makes one frustrated till the very end.

The main character is fake and I can't feel her true self. The story has sooooo many holes and missing scenes (big/small), that one ends up puzzled why (WHY!) they decided to cut that out / or simply not film it. The story has a lot of potential, but this is really not worth watching. Sorry.. I was hoping for a good nortic crime serie, but ended up being angry and annoied for 8x40min instead.

Fatal Crossing

Before watching something I always check with IMDB for the rating but not for Nordic series which are usually good. This is the exception. Best described as turgid. Fairly convoluted story of missing girls and serial killers being investigated by Nora, a disgraced journalist. The unsmiling Nora is hard work and difficult to warm to and as she is on screen virtually all the time interest soon wanes. Towards the end the long silences between the characters made you think they had forgotten their lines. Overall a poor series which would not be complete without the 'trick' ending which made no sense.

Entertaining.

I seen some reviews that were critical of the program being far too slow. Apparently, they are entertained by the procedural programs in which after a crime is committed in the first 10 minutes the rest of episode is spent gathering facts and suspects until the last 5 minutes when an arrest is made. Police work often is far more extensive requiring days, weeks or longer to arrive at a resolution. The weakness in this program was the potential police coverup which has become something of a cliche. Also, another cliche is potentially attaching a crime to the wrong individual. Otherwise, this particular program was very entertaining.

Intelligent and slow-paced psychological crime

It is an intelligent slow-paced crime show with strong characters, beautiful scenery and good acting. It's almost the opposite of Kastanjemannen - it's intelligent, you think you got it all figured out early on, but then the story is slowly twisting in an unexpected direction. I love Lone Theil's books about Nora Sand, and I think Marie Sandø Jondal is a perfect fit for Nora. It's a psychological story, of course, the main character has to solve a mystery within herself, and the riddle is existential and deals with anxiety ("angst" in Danish) and psychological motives with references to the philosopher Søren Kierkegaard (Nora's father is a professor on the great danish philosopher). I was amazed by the extremely long scenes towards the end of the show - and how my presuppositions made me draw the wrong conclusions.

Unrealistic and annoying crap

Ordii crime has always been a favorite genre; Danish and British crime series always leave you with a more or less satisfying feeling that you've been entertained, amused, jawdropped and/or chocked by the twists and turns of the narrative and characters . Always with a well thought out casting and directing.

But here we have a great example of the exception that Roves the rule.

Handing out every unrealistic cliche in the genre, in a painstakingly slow tempo, that doesn't bring the plot forward, nor deepens the characters, this is from beginning to its ridiculous ending a total shipwreck. We really tried to the bitter end to find some qualities in this but it all ends up in a huge pile of pompous doodoo.

I highly recommend that you watch wall paint dry up instead; it gives you a greater experience and depth to the narrative and characters.

Let's agree to disagree

I must say going in, that this is a rare time in which my opinion seems to differ from the masses. I don't typically post reviews, I simply trust the ratings that I see and I'm not normally disappointed. I found this to be riveting on many levels. This actress is next level talented. I thought the acting was superb and I thought it was well written. The pace could have been a bit quicker, but I think it lended itself to a more thorough series. Most of you don't agree with that, I get it. This series, on its worst day, though, is far far better than most of the garbage put out in America. On that, I think we can all agree. 🤘

Disappointing

I wanted to like this, but the longer it went on the worse it was. It had started out quite well. A mystery for a journalist to solve. And a missing girl in present day. That storyline seem to disappear very quickly. It got a bit more interesting with the introduction of the serial killer in prison. For a savvy journalist Nora made some pretty stupid decisions. I lost count of how many times I shouted at the screen as she did something stupid. The last 2 episodes were a lot of staring into space and standing about. Nobody was particularly likeable throughout the whole series. It could have been so much better with some tweaking. Disappointing.

Scandì Stinker

I love Scandì Noir but this one is rank. I can only assume that the reviewer who gave it 10/10 has had a head injury or perhaps was high when watching. It's as slow as geological time and mostly ludicrous to boot. I haven't the energy to list the dafter or more unbelievable plot elements but if you have monumental reserves of tolerance or place no value on your own time, please fill your boots and watch it, just don't blame me when you wish ALL of the characters a serious misfortune. Strongly recommend you don't watch it sober. Should be returned to the editing suite and reduced by 2/3. At a minimum.

Thank you for this gem of a Nordic Crime

When my wife encouraged me to see this one, I resisted, mainly because I hadn't really heard about it, and I certainly thought I didn't have the time. But as she persisted I gave it a try, and got quickly hooked. Within the afternoon I catched up with her, and we watched the remaining 4 episodes together in the evening. I mention this because I have always loved to watch TV with others rather than alone, and in this one it's good to have someone to discuss details with. I don't think I've ever digested a show this fast, I don't binge watch often. This is like a good book. A real pageturner. I felt it was so refreshing with a "new" cast of actors, of whom I only knew a few. I think it made the mystery even more unpredictable. When other claims it's too slow, I disagree. It doesn't have to fast paced and packed to the max with sound efffects and loud music to be thrilling. Yes, certain editors would maby have cut it shorter, but I personally loved every second. Thank You for this. Good work. More please.

Disappointing Norwegian drama

I do love Scandi noir drama and was looking forward to watching this one. I managed to get to episode 3 before l decided enough is enough due to how unbelievable it is, as well as the too slow pace and poor acting. I noticed another reviewer decided to watch all 8 episodes hoping it would improve, which it didn't, thanks for the heads up, l definitely won't be making that mistake.

L managed to get halfway through episode 3 when the storyline became so preposterous and unrealistic that it wasn't worth considering as something l could continue to watch so please do not waste your time with this.

Slow evolution but not as bad as many suggest

This is a slowly evolving narrative. It's not anything like as bad as some suggest. There is nothing doubt some scenes are on the ponderous side so the direction is a bit at fault. The story is credible and interestingly convoluted. There's definitely a number of points where you try to get Nora to behave a bit more rationally. Lisbeth is played with some menace by Susan A Olsen who stands out here compared to other roles she has been given in Borden or The Eagle. Over all worth watching. It is important to accept the play is about the character development and underlying psychology of the individuals here. I enjoyed it even with the slow pace.

Unrealistic plor and slow as molasses

Others have said this, probably better, but I finished it, and that is 6 hours I'll never get back. It kept my attention, barely. This is partially due to how incredibly slow they moved the plot along, but it also seems like deliberate stylization. If I knew how dragged out and how weak the plor, I would have passed!

Starts off as a Nordic gris, ends up as a Nordic Noir.

Not for those who want action and not plot development. An abrasive heroine doesn't help, and we know she's off on the wrong path, and boy is she off on the wrong path. A journalist who thinks she's a detective, and she needs to be because the cops are incompetent. As the plot evolves it gets deeper and deeper into the black soul of murder. Character development is great, and that's one of the things that makes this worth watching, slow as it may be for some. The other is the mystery is well hidden until, what should be the end, but is not.

One thing that irritated was the short episodes that seemed to be left for too long.
