Korean Drama " Heavenly Idol " is a fantasy drama about a heavenly priest who suddenly becomes an idol.
Right from the beginning, the drama doesn't take itself seriously and it continues with the light, silly mood till the very ending. Thus, the whole heavenly politics/battle of good and evil was set aside and was underdeveloped, especially since it wasn't easy to make the viewer care for them when the rest of the story is a comedy.
The romance was another part of the drama that was awkward. It could easily be omitted actually without any effect on the main plot, as the couple didn't have chemistry as lovers and were better off as friends. Not to mention that their romantic encounters were few.
Finally, the performances were enjoyable by everyone in the cast and the CGI good enough.
So, overall, four out of ten.

See below, originally gave 8 but had to update:
I am rating an 8 but may come back and re-evaluate after the series finishes. I was really impressed at the beginning 3 episodes, and the songs that were sung were just so Heavenly that it gave me the chills. Kim Min Kyu was unbelievable in the role and got hooked in those early episodes.
It's now episode 8 and kind of think it is getting a little hokey - with the devil and now he the ML Rembray is getting human feelings and can't act on them with being a Priest and all. Feel it is worth to keep watching and enjoy it for the fantasy drama that it is - and will see how it turns out. Am wondering how the ending will be since Remarry needs to get back and the real Idol needs to get home as well. Funny in lots of parts too.
FINAL RATING UPDATE: Sadly came back to reduce my original rating of a 9. Really enjoyed the early episodes, but for me the violence got to be too much and also the ending was so boring that I dozed off daydreaming and actually had to put it on again and fast forward to the end to see it again which now I know why I dozed off after seeing the ending for the 2nd time. Could have done better.

Cute cast leads this rom com fantasy drama. Sadly the humour is too simplistic and some is lost in translation. Some jokes are strained and After 3 episodes I wonder if it has the ability to sustain a series. Things start off quite grandly in the fantasy world. When the story moves to modern Seoul Kim Min Kyu looks the part but his switch into modern life seems too easy as he seems to adapt without much trouble. Body swap shows have been done many times before. Usually it's fascinating but here rather crudely handled. The lead actress Ko Bo Gyeol is sweet but her character is a little annoying at times. Most of the jokes are lame weak or painful.
This might be interesting for those into what idols lives are like.

I can't believe people actually like this show. The acting is horrendous and the writing is also. This is like some immature kid show I could watch on Disney channel. I am a huge fan of K drama/romantic comedies, but there is no depth to this show. The fantasy aspect is ok and something different, but the 2 actors have no connection and doesn't play to their strengths. It seems this crop of new shows coming out of Korea are almost being forced out since they are popular to people. How about they take their time and bring a product that can be enjoyed by everyone. Ko Bo Gyeol seems lost in the show because of the writers and Kim Min Kyu has looks, but zero acting skills.
The Heavenly Idol is quite frankly a perfect romantic comedy. It has a very wide range cast of characters that are all so much fun to watch, with each one adding a little bit of flair to the overall plot line.
The story is fun, interesting, and just different enough to make it stand out from the crowd. The ML is such a wonderful character, just naive enough that the situations he finds himself in are ridiculous in a believable way that create genuine humor for the viewer. The romance is more of a subplot, but it is well done with a really great female lead who is both smart and strong.
I thought that 12 episodes was the perfect length to have a well fleshed-out story line without dragging it out or rushing the plot points. The portrayal of K-pop idols definitely gives fans something to think about, as their favorite idols are often mistreated and go through a lot of hardship to get into the spotlight, and I found watching this little group of idols very rewarding and interesting.
Overall I this is well worth the watch for any rom-com fan!
