Tyler Perry in A Madea Christmas (2013)

A Madea Christmas

This actually is more entertaining than the reviews would imply, emphasis on entertaining over good.

A Madea Christmas (2013) is a movie that I recently watched on Amazon Prime. The storyline follows Madea's good friend that pays her to drive her to the country to see her daughter after the daughter informed the mom she isn't coming home for Christmas. The daughter has a secret she's not ready to share with her mom...she married a white man. When the mother unexpectantly arrives at her daughter's house her new husband has to pretend to not be her husband. Further complicating matters is the husband's family is coming over for Christmas.

This movie is written, stars and directed by Tyler Perry (Diary of a Mad Black Woman) and also stars Larry the Cable Guy (Cars), Tika Sumpter (Sonic the Hedgehog), Anna Maria Horsford (Friday), Lisa Whelchel (The Facts of Life), Chad Michael Murray (Freaky Friday) and Eric Lively (American Pie).

This actually is more entertaining than the reviews would imply, emphasis on entertaining over good. The storyline is fun to watch unfold and the cast is very good. Larry the Cable Guy versus Madea all movie was hilarious. The dialogue was very good and well written. The Mary J Blidge and Joe story about the birth of Jesus had me cracking up, the entire store sequence and firing was hilarious and the white ankles scene was comedic gold. I will say the constant reliance on lies part of the storyline was a bit over used, but the little boy plot was sad but good.

Overall, this is an entertaining watch and slightly better than the reviews would lead you to believe. I would score this a 6/10 and recommend seeing it once.

Another okay Tyler Perry movie

Let me first say that I am a fan of the man Tyler Perry. His struggles, his perseverance, his rise to fame are inspirational to me and to so many others. He has had a hand full of good movies: A Diary of Mad Black Woman, The Family that Preys and the first Why Did We Get Married. Then, he has several movies that have a character and/or a scene and/or a particular actor/actress I like in them. I usually enjoy these movies and could see them again. Then there are the truly awful movies like the second Why Did We Get Married.

Madea's Christmas is in the second group. I enjoyed this movie more than I expected to. There were some opportunities to laugh out loud. The cast was fine especially Anna Marie Horsford and Larry the Cable Guy. There were the poignant moments and once I actually had a tear trying to pop up in one eye. Seeing Blair from the Facts of Life was nice.

If you are expecting an Oscar worthy movie, you will get your feelings hurt. If you want a movie you can enjoy with your family (they could have edited out the use of a particular curse word), you will be okay.

Not What I Was Expecting, But Good!

Last night, my mother and I decided to go to the premiere of the newest Tyler Perry film, "A Madea Christmas". We have seen all of the Madea films for the first time in the passed three months, and we have come to love Tyler very much as a writer and director. For me, the last two Madea films, "Madea Goes to Jsil" and "Madea's Witness Protection" just weren't that good. My mother, however, loved them even more than the original two films. "A Madea Christmas" has exactly what the previous films were missing: heart and a message. Tyler truly created a good little play-like film that explores themes still relevant to today. Anyways, let me begin the actual review, rather than my backstory.

When Madea's niece tells her mother that she cannot make it home for Christmas this year, the mother begs Madea to drive her down South to see her daughter for the holiday. Once again, we have a hilarious caper of twists and turns that make us laugh and cry, that touch us and uplift us. I prefer to call this film more of a dramedy than a comedy. It's serious, yet lighthearted.

Tyler Perry's writing is all-in-all brilliant, in my opinion. He knows how to craft characters as well as craft hilarious scenes. Sometimes Perry even drops one-liners that either make us laugh, drop our jaws, and sometimes he makes us do both. The man has a heart, and I love that about him. Tyler's films typically get low ratings for no reason whatsoever. They continually kill me with laughter, and this one shocks me the most. I found it to be the funniest out of all five films, but it is definitely not my favorite. It marches in order after "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and then "Madea's Big Happy Family".

The acting in this film was excellent, as well! Chad Michael Murray dominates a role as the town tough guy, whilst a small boy (surprisingly playing Chad Michael Murray's character's son) touches everyone's heart who watches the film. I nearly cried at one point, due to how exceptional this young man's acting skills were. He deserves so many awards for what he did with his character. My main attraction for the film was Larry the Cable Guy. That man has done so many awful comedy sketches, but even HE did a fantastic job with his character! The main characters weren't cookie-sheet cut-outs, but legitimate people, in my eyes. They all felt real, and so did this whole caper Madea was drug into.

The plot has many different story threads taking place, as well as many themes Tyler Perry has thrown in that correlate directly with things like "keeping Christ in Christmas" debates taking place in this day-and-age.

The film is absolutely hilarious, yet heartfelt. I laughed, I teared-up, and I cheered in awe at the ending song. My audience was so into the film that no one happened to be texting, or anything! What a wonderful experience! The only thing missing from the film, in my opinion, was Madea's husband. He has always been my favorite character, and I was disappointed that he didn't appear whatsoever, even as a cameo. I couldn't help but take a star away for his absence.

It isn't the best movie of the year, but I'm happy to see Mr. Perry get his footing right, this time around. I will continue to watch these fun-filled movies.

Enjoy, and God bless, my friends! Praise The Lord and Merry Christmas!

Christmas is Dead

For those that like Tyler Perry's films and especially the Madea films -- you know who you are -- I'm sure this would be another enjoyable foray into that world. Nah, this review isn't for you. This is for the other people who for some godforsaken reason might end up having to watch this film. I've sat through a lot of crap, and I just couldn't make it through this. I lasted longer than I thought I would, so I'll give myself that. You're basically paying for a made-for-TV movie you'd see on either BET or Hallmark channel. Incredibly bad script, a narrative that is bland and uninteresting, repetitive jokes that are the opposite of funny, screen transitions you'd expect to see on a sitcom's Christmas special, and lazy camera-work.

The only redeeming quality of this film is the attractiveness of Tika Sumpter, I mean goddamn does she look gorgeous.

Certain characters make it almost unwatchable!

The mother and the daughter make this movie almost unwatchable! The daughter not telling the mom about her relationship when she had countless times and her mother being SO annoying that you want to smack her! It's absolutely ridiculous! Madea is literally the only saving grace of this movie!

One of the funniest entries, but WOW the editing mistakes!

It's probably one of the funniest Madea movies, but there are literally scenes completely out of order and one scene even REPEATS. Don't know who edited but man did they drop the ball on it.

Nah...

After having sat through four questionable "Madea" movies today, as part of a Tyler Perry's "Madea" movie marathon, I came to watch the 2013 movie "A Madea Christmas". Sure, I had never heard about the movie prior to today. And after four less than mediocre movies, I was not harboring the biggest of expectations to this particular movie, if I have to be honest.

Writer Tyler Perry put together an okay script and storyline here. It was nice to see that he ventured a bit further away from the serious topics that the previous movies were dealing with, which left more room for some good old fashioned comedy. But it still wasn't sufficient, to be honest. And as for this being a Christmas movie, well it was frightfully devoid of any Christmas spirit.

Aside from Tyler Perry, then the movie had some other familiar faces, with the likes of Chad Michael Murray, Kathy Najimy, Larry the Cable Guy, Anna Maria Horsford and Eric Lively. I will say that the cast ensemble in "A Madea Christmas" certainly deviated from the previous four movies I had just sat through. The acting performances were fair, despite of a subpar script.

My rating of writer and director Tyler Perry's 2013 movie "A Madea Christmas" lands on a four out of ten stars.

December, 2024: 'Tis The Season To Be Streaming! Alternatives to The Every Year Festive Favorite Films and Christmas Classics. Movies to Make You (Maybe) More Merry This Xmas

Is this some major award winner?

No.

Is it at least a Christmas classic? An every year watch?

Maybe for some.

Is it a great holiday film for at least Madea fans?

Now, that's probably true.

So, what's wrong with that?

People that watch these movies know exactly what they are getting.

And they love it.

And this time they get it in December.

I either like these movies or I love them.

I like and love this one.

I love the casting choices.

I love Larry The Cable Guy as the father in law.

Now, Tyler Perry's writing and directing is always super sappy and syrupy, but if you can't be sappy and syrupy at the holidays, when can you be?

I actually prefer the Boo Halloween movies to this one, but I still liked this one.

And compared to the other films on this above titled list that I've created, this one is an award winner.

Ho, Ho, Ho!

His best one..IMHO..

Very funny, didn't drag on too long as some have done, was entertaining throughout, along with adding enough drama to keep you interested. Larry the Cable Guy and Tyler Perry should work together more often, they were very funny in their scenes together. The scene where Madea stopped in and used the rest room, and the klan was gathering was hysterical. I wish Joe Simmons and the Brown's had made an appearance or two, they were some of my favorite characters from the previous movies. Nothing is funnier than when Tyler Perry playing Joe Simmons and Madea start arguing with each other. That kid Noah Urrea who played Bailey in the end is exceptionally talented, his future is very bright.

Average at best

So basically, A Madea Christmas was nothing more than a Hallmark movie with a higher production value. This was the first Tyler Perry movie I've seen, and I'm pretty sure this will be my last.

The improv scenes including Larry the Cable Guy is this films only saving grace. Other than that, it's a very mundane movie with a weak character arc and and lazy story telling.

I truly believe that Mr Perry used the writers from The Hallmark Channel and asked them to write a generic, by the numbers script and have himself and Larry improvise scenes that add nothing to the story. It just seemed lazy to me.

Bah Humbug Tyler Perry

A Madea Christmas (2013) is the eighth entry in the Madea Cinematic Universe and it was once again written, produced and directed by Tyler Perry and this movie was another steaming pile of garbage.

Positives for A Madea Christmas (2013): My one positive for this movie is the cast including Kathy Najimy, Chad Michael Murray, Anna Maria Horsford, Tika Sumpter, Eric Lively, JR Lemon, Alicia Witt and Lisa Whelchel are pretty decent.

Negatives for A Madea Christmas (2013): We have another Madea movie where Tyler Perry is doing his usual schtick except we only have to deal with Madea which is kinda good, but I still hate this character. There is barely a story to this movie and it is comprised of subplots that are here to waste your time and make the movie longer. The humor is still cringe worthy and the dramatic moments fall flat because Tyler Perry doesn't know to pull them off right. You also have Larry the Cable Guy trying to do the dramatic acting except it fails because all I see and hear is Mater from the Cars franchise. You have this white family and black lady kinda feuding with each other as the son from the white family and the daughter of the black lady like each other apparently that isn't okay with them, but then it ends with no resolution. You have Chad Michael Murray with his wife and son going through stuff that I completely forgot about as it was pointless. And finally, the ending was just really stupid.

Overall, A Madea Christmas (2013) continues the torturous streak of this cinematic universe still being garbage with every entry that comes out.
