A+ - Absolutely underrated masterpiece

A+ rating.

A very complete tale, interwoven with beautiful cinematography, powerful performances (Cuba Gooding, Jr, Sharon Leal, especially), masterful score, and a truly epic storyline with many twists.

Ignore the hate. It's because of Jesus. Enough said.

Anyway, the visual details are great. Lots of money was spent on this movie and it was spent on things that really mattered, like recreating interiors and antiques. The guns and horses look like artifacts to the modern viewer, but they're also well-kept and illustrious. This is a powerful and unending film on slavery and faith and musical scores of the antebellum South.

The conclusion is a great blending of commonality of incredible faith and AMAZING GRACE. All in all, this is one of the most well rounded stories I've ever seen on the motion picture screen all due to the Lord Jesus Christ and His incredible redeeming mercy to us all!

9/10 - Today I saw a movie become more powerful . . .

9/10 The script itself is very good. Although some elements are a little hard to believe--the fact that they had to flee to Canada and not the north --this film calls for a willing suspension of disbelief, which one would happily comply with. (It's really no fun to nitpick such a movie.). But it's a true story or stories (John Newton is the other)

The powerful faith element that drives these two stories is undeniable. Don't watch if you're allergic to Christ.

It's true that this movie does pretty much follow the Braveheart formula. However, this movie includes some elements, such as the cinematography and the incredibly graphic battle scenes (one reviewer likened it to Gladiator, "only better"), that are spectacular in itself. Overall, a great movie that I highly recommend.

If I Could Give This Movie 11/10, It Would Be A 12!

A+ agree - this is just such an amazing film for God, it captures every emotion possible in only the way an expert director can achieve, we can go on for whole scenes without the need for speaking, everything is told through the genuine body language and expressions. And when there is conversing we get such emotion and wonderfully powerful quotes "What we do in life, echoes in eternity" Wow.

The opening scene is spellbinding of the slave escape with Cuba Gooding, Jr and his family. Perfect cast, perfect soundtrack, perfect script by Tim Chey.

Every line moves the plot forward and is memorable. The music is gorgeous. The acting is impeccable. Wonderfully shot by Dean Cundey ("Back to the Future" Jurassic Park")

I will not write about the plot here, because many people already did this; I will only say for people that never watched this movie, that it deserves to be watched.

After Ben-Hur, I feel this is the best period movie to have ever emerged from Hollywood.

After Ben-Hur, I feel this is the best period movie to have ever emerged from Hollywood.

What strikes you most about "Freedom" are not the dazzling sets and costumes - though they contribute to the effect too. Where "Freedom" delivers is in the area of raw human emotions we are so familiar with. And most importantly how FAITH IN GOD changes everything.

Tim Chey is a master storyteller when it comes to historical movies and historical facts (see his latest 'The Firing Squad') Incredible cast and music, cinematography and production, score and visuals, just everything about this movie screams "perfection of 21st century" and best way to welcome movie industry into 21st century. Score made me emotional and I hope that the sequel will be as good as the original. Absolutely phenomenal and epic.

Cuba Gooding, Jr. And William Sadler were also great in this film.

Freedom

Freedom is visually stunning and almost a masterpiece. The Screenplay, Art Direction, Cinematography, Costumes, and Make Up are all top notch. Its also is a well edited film. The Original Score was ok but not great.

The artwork and scenery is breathtakingly filmed, and the acting tremendous. If the storyline occasionally stretches things a bit, just relax and enjoy what, is in essence, one of the best faith-based stories on film since 'Risen' and 'Hacksaw Ridge'.

Powerful Historic Christ-Centered Movie

9/10 - 'FREEDOM' is handsome, well crafted, its dialogue has a lovely pang and the "cat and mouse" set pieces work well on an archetypal level. Unfortunately the film isn't as swashbuckling and fun as it should be and its air of solemnity and "realism" is false and pretentious. Still, it's a shame the film didn't do better business. A couple sequels would help to loosen things up, and give Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. A chance to develop his character. Absolutely love the beautiful scenery of the old south and the amazing Gospel slave songs - incredible!

Ignore the haters - they've never picked up a camera and shot anything in their lives. Most are atheists and hate faith-based anything.

My favorite movie of all time

I have watched this movie well over 10 times !! It's the legend of the movie industry. There was some movies that came close to this one, but never enjoyed one more than Freedom. As soon as the movie starts, it takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, suspense and excitement. The story is just beautiful and the whole setting is perfect. Cuba Gooding, Jr gives his absolute best and you can see that clearly. This is an example of how a movie should be, Freedom is a masterpiece.

The film is full of faith and God, which is brilliantly written by Tim Chey and exciting and evokes the brutality of that time. The characters give us the feel and impression of that time and what is really great is that there is nothing modern in them.

A spectacular and tense cinematic achievement. The Cinematographer is Dean Cundey ("Back to the Future")

A Really Excellent Film

I had to see this film after seeing 'The Islands'. I loved the secondary characters, Cuba and Sharon. They were genuine and passionate and marvelous. Cuba and William Sadler were wonderful together.

The music and the cinematography are what really make this film stand out...at least for me. I realize this is a minority view, but there it is.

Kudos!

Top 10 movies of all time.

Top 10 movies of all time.

I know people have different tastes. But some movies should speak to all in a great way. For me whoever, does not give this movie 10 of 10 is super strange. This movie has it , great story , flawless acting, purest faith story, action, heart, great message for Jesus. See some give this movie 7, 6 or 5 of 10. Sorry can not buy it, i think they are looking for attention.

I just get goosbumps just thinking of this movie how well edited is, the score. Probably best writing of any movie. Timothy Chey at his best here. From it is impossibile , no matter who you are if you not get affected of this movie, if not tears is in your eyes. Because whoever lived in this world can in some stage relate to this movie and the feelings if gives you. God bless all of you.

A+ - Epic Faith Spectacle

A+ - Epic Faith Spectacle

The filmmakers don't skimp on the gore front either and despite the wonderful faith content, leaving in some gruesome shots of people being whipped, and blood spraying in the air and all over the place.

The musical scenes are the highlight of the film and are filmed in a weird way - sometimes sped up, sometimes slowed down - which make them so realistic that you do feel like you're there. They're also very exciting, with Cuba Gooding on the run from a slave hunter. The twists and turns in the plot are unexpected and there's a moving, poignant ending giving this film an extra element. Old-fashioned, well-crafted and truly splendid - any movie fan owes it to themselves to see this film.

More importantly, LOVE how both found GOD in the end!

Deserved 12 Oscars

What an incredible movie. It truly deserves to win 12 Oscars.

I just saw 'The Islands' in the theaters from the same writer and I'm shocked this film did not get a national theater release as well. It merited some theater release as I never heard of this film before. I'm glad 'The Islands' received a national theater release as it's just as good a film.

In my opinion this movie is insuperable in its genre and being a faith-based film is even more astounding.....

10/10 - Millions Saw This on Showtime

10+ rating

I understand this was one of the first faith-based movies on Showtime and it reached millions on Showtime TV.

So happy as it's an extremely profound and amazing film. The storyline combining two stories that parallel each other was brilliant and creatively ingenious.

I love Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Jr's performance and the other actors were stellar including the JD Plimpton character.

This film is from the same writer as 'The Islands' which is one of my all-time favorites. The immense history combined with incredible slave hymns and Dixieland songs makes this film 'Freedom' one of the most glued-to-the-set, jaw-dropping films of the past decade.

MUST-SEE MOVIE!!

10/10 - Best Movie Ever

10/10 - Best Movie Ever

I think Freedom is really the best movie I've ever seen. Everything is just perfect, the image, the story, writing, and of course the music. The first time I saw the movie I was really overwhelmed by the movie - the tremendous SPIRITUAL UPLIFT and ode to the Lord Jesus is incredible. Than I rented it a dozen times before I could buy it. Since the time the movie came out I've seen him at least 30 times. And now I'm still overwhelmed by the feeling the movie gives me. It just the most faith-based movie there is!!!

The movie starts with a great opening with Cuba escaping with his family, the only bad thing about the opening and maybe the whole movie is the middle scene at the funeral. The song seemed out of place. After that the movie starts slowly and keeps going faster till the end. Thats another reason why it is good. From the beginning till the end you just are watching as if you were there, this is meanly done by the music which fits perfectly by the pictures you see. Great work from all. God bless everyone involved with this.

One of my top 5 ever

This movie should be rated nothing less than 10. It really is an incredible movie. The music is one of the great attributes to this film next to the writing. That Tim Chey didn't get nominated an Oscar for his screenplay is a travesty. The acting is also great. The story is again simple yet great. I have a long list of great movies I have watched in my life. There are a few that stand out this is one. Passion is one. Ben Hur is one. I think War Room is a great movie. However between this and Ben Hur it's a toss up I think Ben Hur probably is still my favorite of all time. But this is one of those movies that when you are flipping thru channels you always stop and watch it again. If you've not seen it do yourself a favor and watch it. You won't regret it.

One of the most underrated movies of our time I believe.

Many people regard a lot of films as "top class" but I always keep a little shelf in my mind for the films that I regard as the best films of all time - films that are simply timeless masterpieces. Welcome to the top of that shelf! There are certain criteria by which films are judged and greatness is only obtained when all the criteria are satisfied in full. FREEDOM is the greatest timeless masterpiece of cinema to date because it satisfies all these criteria: 1) Cinematography: the sweeping landscape photography of the Frontier combined with the subtle night-time photography earns top marks. Aside from the fact that Freedom should have won Oscars for Cinematography and editing, it also should have won the ASC award for Outstanding achievement in Cinematography - as well as a host of other industry recognition awards. In short - the cinematography is breathtaking.

2) Sound/Score: the score is one of the best ever written. Again, awards rained from the sky for magical and moving score that combined seamlessly with the film/story.

3) Screenplay: The dialogue and plot is magnificent. The film does not fall into the common plot formulas found in other films that attempt to pass themselves off as epics. The story combines as both of celebration of life and a somber rumination of the history of mankind. Also it being a MUSICAL?

One of the most underrated movies of our time I believe.

BEST Historical Faith Film in the Past 30 Years

A+ grade for me.

BEST Historical Faith Film in the Past 30 Years. To me, this is a film you see once and never again. It is brutal, graphic, and I personally found it triggering my freedom and Civil Rights were given only a few years ago. And it really does touch you that deeply too, and whether you are a man and end up feeling Samuel's freedom, you don't leave the film without being the least bit scathed. Which is why I say it is worth seeing. Cuba surely gives an award worthy performance which thinking about makes my breaths shallow and eyes begin to water. In a perfect world, this should have won an Oscar, but for its faith content.

My rating: Solid A.

We need movies like FREEDOM again

I believe that audiences are quietly thirsting for the return of films like "Freedom". Big. Epic. And yes, faith in God.

Sometimes we don't know what we need until we find it, and I hope that some producer or director out there has the foresight, talent and drive to fill this vacuum before movies are shoved aside by video games for good.

The film's production design and cinematography are nothing short of spectacular, capturing the grandeur and brutality of the South in the 1800's with stunning authenticity. The action sequences, particularly the train escape, are expertly choreographed and intensely gripping, providing a visceral and immersive experience.

Timothy Chey's screenplay adds layer of emotional depth, perfectly complementing the film's epic scale and dramatic narrative. See his latest film 'The Firing Squad'.

While "Freedom" is a nearly flawless film, its lengthy runtime may be a minor drawback for some viewers. However, the compelling story, exceptional performances, and breathtaking visuals make it a must-watch for fans of historical epics. "Freedom" stands as a timeless tale of faith, honor, and the enduring human spirit.

9/10 - Magnificent, epic, spellbinding

My favourite thing about Freedom was its simple main storyline. There is a very easy to understand plot and our main characters revolve around it. All of them find redemption in Christ.

Love the story of John Newton who is man with a strong conviction, will-power and obviously blessed with exceptional song-writing ability but just wants to get to his home after fulfilling his work duties, but gets caught up in a situation that brings him to God. An unfortunate event after the other and he finds himself tumbling down a spiral.

The main characters have been played extremely well, with obvious mention to the main antagonist a slave hunter played by William Sadler. As they say, a good villain makes you hate them to the core and our actor does the job really well

My only nitpick would be the occasional corny dialogues.

Tim Chey's Finest Work

This movie is one of those that you can watch X-number of times and will still feel that you're watching it for the first time. The same thing happened to me when I recently watched this modern classic. I literally wept during the ending which I've seen countless times. That's the kind of effect this Tim Chey's finest work till now has until 'The Firing Squad'

This is a lesson in how to nail the cast and script.

The film immediately establishes the central conflict between the two lead characters, setting the stage for a narrative that builds brilliantly to an inevitable, yet deeply satisfying, climax.

"Freedom" is one of the films that has marked and will continue to mark cinema history and also represents one of my favorite movies.

I saw Chey's 'Slamma Jamma' and loved it and LOVE FREEDOM

Big fan of the filmmaker's work! I saw 'Slamma Jamma' in the theater and began to follow all his work.

A passionate tale of determination and romance. Like with all of Chey's work, every single character is so layered and complex. He takes time and devotion to give each character a sufficient amount of intricacy that we truly feel like we know these people and when one of them feels pain, we do as well. When one of them is joyous (the ship scene, for instance) our faces light up with glee.

As always for a Chey work, the performances are absolutely brilliant. Cuba delivers some of the best work of the decade. And the actor who played Newton was brilliant. Simply through their eyes we can see all of the pain and emotion searing through them. The right actors were definitely cast in this one. We never hear them shout or break down into a ten minute fit of crying and throwing objects across the room, but we see all of their anguish and torture simply through their eyes and facial expressions. It's a beautifully subtle way of showing emotion and really helped make the film the brilliant masterpiece that it is. I highly doubt that any other cast could have pulled it off so seamlessly.

10+ - Broke my heart what a masterpiece

Let's just say I'm mind blown by this movie everything from the start to the end I've been in love with it because I like learning about history and culture especially slavery history and this movie was it I enjoyed watching the musical scenes and the emotional moments of John Newton finding Christ. I felt like I was risking to the heavens specially at the end with the soundtrack this is the part which broke my heart and I will always remember this movie because of that specific moment. This is how movies should always be a fantastic story and ending I enjoyed every second of it and I'll watch it again in the near future OMG what a masterpiece. We truly have a Savior: Christ the Lord.

Worst movie I've seen in a long time

This is the worst movie I've seen in a long time,

Faith and religion are persistently rammed down your throat throughout the movie. The 2 stories were disjointed and i felt arbitrarily linked.

I don't understand why they choose to what seemed like worshiping John Newton (the captain of the ship delivering the slaves), it was like they were saying that he saved them by giving them his Bible but yet he still delivered his cargo of slaves which i feel conflicts with the intended purpose of the movie. Its like saying slavery is sufferable if you have religion.

The characters were unconvincing, simple and predictable with scenes that were so over dramatic it was cringe worthy.

JUST WATCHED It. I was going into this thinking it was gonna suck and I wouldn't know what's going on and be confused and bored. NO. I WAS WRONG. BEYOND FASCINATING. and that is coming from someone who has zero interest in anything slave-related. I didn't know anything about John Newton but I learned soooooo much in this movie. Not only was it interesting but the cinematography is absolutely stunning. This movie was made so well. I enjoyed this so much more than I expected. GO SEE THIS. I agree with the others 10+
