When you want to critique Hollywood, you have to do it intimately and not in a gigantic and obscene way like the budgets of summer movies: The Uninvited is a play to keep you close and engaged thanks to a beautifully staged sequence of almost thriller-like setups to surprise you. There are no superheroes, mass murderers, or lovers running through airports, but real people who feel like all of us.
All the characters are charming until real-life problems catch up with them to show that they are vulnerable humans, where there will always be hope. But will everything be too late? That's what each spectator will have to judge.

I can see why many already famous actors would want to be part of this movie. A balanced comedy drama; uses a Hollywood environment to set up a surprisingly great movie. The script is so well distilled that manages to be dense while feeling familiar, no matter your circumstances. Lois Smith is a total blast ... just think of it, as she seems to be 95 years old; she is one of probably two main characters in this movie, and she takes you for a ride ... you don't know what to expect from her! Her body language is so expressive ... her state of mind may switch from gone to utterly present in a nanosecond. Elizabeth is brilliant as well; as she understands and embraces this strange presence while balancing her myriad or roles as host / wife / mother and coach. Three well recognizable male actors play roles most men can identify with ... the worried husband, the creative / God like ... the non vibant ... no time to feel, etc. Loved every character in this movie; which is a way of saying that writer / director is unusually talented.
I really enjoyed this sensitive intelligent film with its insightful script of adults trying to understand themselves and their complicated lives. Set in a beautiful Hollywood Hills home the characters are complex as they struggle with how to treat each other and their own vulnerabilities. An elderly stranger arrives whose wisdom slowly unfolds as the well acted party guests gradually reveal their truer selves. All of the actors are excellent in their roles. Walton Goggins and Pedro Pascal are interesting as their divergent characters. The setting and scenes all take place at the home and could be a superb Broadway play as well.

I watched The Uninvited. At the Odeon last night and was genuinely moved by it. The film had the emotional depth and intimacy of a stage play - relatable, at times uncomfortably so, yet also beautiful, thought-provoking, funny and emotionally rich .
The performances were strong across the board, pulling me into the story completely. I laughed, I cried - it was one of those rare films that stays with you long after the credits roll.
I especially appreciated the visual effect and setting of the scenes with the orange tree - beautifully done, both symbolically and cinematically. They added a sense of quiet magic to the film that balanced its heavier themes.
A good production and a truly moving piece. I'd absolutely recommend it - and would gladly watch it again.

A easy going, sharp movie, with a feminine sensibility. Quick, clear dialogue... like you're in a play, a beautiful play. The acting is impeccable all around ... particularly Elizabeth Reaser and Lois Smith. The script is full of twists that unfold providing more depth to every character and surfacing unexpected connections. It's well timed. I really disagree with many other IMDB reviews, which - perhaps - fail to reconcile seeing these fantastic crew acting with no plethora of special effects... life as it is. Also, the constant comedy/drama interchange may be unsettling for some; I find it refreshing and, again, very real. Kudos to Nadia Conners and this crew!
