Beautiful background scenery, simple plot

Cinematography and scenery is beautiful and lifts the crime series. We want to see more of this, maybe some episodes from the Norwegian border ? I live in Trondheim, Norway, and Åre is close to this city. Åre is the major alpine sports ski resort in Sweden and also popular place to visit by Norwegians. Åre is close to Norwegian border.

Now, about the series.

It is a more like a Crime Drama. The swedes are good at making "Dark Crime" TV series. The "Beck" crime series should serve as a benchmark for quality in the genre of crime series from Sweden. Despite financial backing from Netflix to create the series, it comes a bit short. Maybe I would expect it to be more scary and exciting. Instead, it feels a bit boring and drama oriented. Don't expect that much excitement in the series. There are some car chasing, but the overall script for possible future episodes of the series should focus more on less drama and more action.

Everything is Great, except the story- its simple

There are times when you come across a show that feels like a hidden gem-a real gold mine. Unfortunately, The Åre Murders isn't one of them.

While the series boasts a fine cast, strong direction, and breathtaking cinematography that enhances the overall experience, it somehow lacks the warmth of your typical Netflix and chill session. And I don't blame the visuals-the real issue lies with the story itself, which never feels truly resolute.

Viveca Sten is undoubtedly a fantastic crime thriller writer, with nearly 20 books to her credit and an international bestseller reputation. However, The Åre Murders leaves gaps that can't easily be ignored. At times, it feels like just another stretched-out episode of CSI-a simple story where characters are grieving, and that's about it. Nothing more, nothing less.

I am going to with a decent 6/10 for this one, you can skip this if you want to.

Beautiful location in rural northern Sweden.

I agree with the other reviewers, the problem with the series is the script. The location is beautiful and it's nice to have a series not set in Stockholm or Malmo or.... In general I have no problem with the cast. Episodes 1-3 are one story, 4 & 5 a second story.

Hanna is a stereotype of a green detective who goes off on her own and doesn't take orders from her senior partner. She has maturing to do and admits that she should have waited and not gone alone. One would think after her recent Stockholm experience, that she'd look before she leaps.

I'm a big fan of the "Beck" series set in Stockholm, that series has a really good cast and superior scripts. This is not a Beck, but it's better than some other Swedish police procedurals..

I'm also a fan of "Sandhamn Murders" also from Viveca Sten mystery novels. Different cast, writers and different production companies. I'd like to see more Swedish crime dramas from Netflix.

Adulterated Scandi Noir

This was a very watchable series. It's a much darker scenario than many others of Viveca Sten's novels or screenplays but still frothy enough not to be depressing.

Yes, there are cliches such as the maverick, suspended, female detective, a male cop whose home life is breaking down and a closeted gay guy but these are woven into the fabric of the story to make a coherent and easy-to-watch narrative.

The plots were fantastical at times with characters doing unexpected or downright dangerous things. A little too much intuition was used in the solving of the cases too. However, in the main, this was worth watching. I saw the lot over a couple of days and it filled in some time very enjoyably. I'd recommend it but don't expect "The Bridge" or "Forbrydelsen".

Heeere's Ole!

Abusive husband busting through a hotel door with an axe to assault his wife and child? Sounds familiar. But it's just a throwaway scene in this rather odd procedural/Scandinoirish series. It's supposed to be a 5-episode season but it's more like two seasons of 3 and 2 episodes respectively, as they pertain to the investigations of unrelated cases. Brevity is the soul of wit or something, and kudos to the show for being efficient and economical. I admit I'm the first to gripe when shows pad the runtime with extraneous twists and goofy red-herrings. Here, however, the show goes to the inverse extreme since the investigations are so truncated and straightforward that their resolutions are banal; plus the characters don't get quite enough development to make an impression.

Good Scandi Noir

I have watched all five episodes and enjoyed them.

They are based on a series of books by a very well known author, Viveca Sten.

There are two distinct stories here... so the first three eps are a complete "story" and then they are followed by two more which extend the characters a bit more.

These are good. I am a huge Scandi Noir fan and love series like this. I find the ones filmed in winter particularly interesting and enjoyable. The conditions are often awful and I just love how the characters move thru the weather like it is nothing special (which it isn't in Scandinavia).

The first story takes a bit of time to get started. By the point we get to the second story, we're familiar if not comfortable with the characters and can sit back and appreciate the plot.

BTW if you're wondering "why two stories?" this is not unusual for series like this. Go with it.

There's nothing super special here. It isn't Beck or Wallander or etc. But it is solid acting and good, engaging plots.

The two main characters (Carla and Kardo) have charisma and a certain *something* between them. And alas, in part this is the reason I'm giving this an 8 instead of a 9 or 10... I don't want to spoil anything but there are hints of something that I'd rather just be left out.

Alternatively, I liked the Charlie plot line in eps 4 and 5.

The other criticism, is, of course, that we see one of the characters doing stupid stuff that in reality I'm guessing the police would never do. But this is common throughout the genre in order to add danger to the plot. So I'm not going to criticize it too much.

So if you're a Scandi Noir fan, or even just a fan of a good detective series, I recommend this.

And as always I recommend watching it in the original language with subtitles. Seriously.

The plots are clever enough to keep you guessing, and yet this is fairly straightforward and dare I say simple storytelling. There's humor. There's drama. There's some intense stuff that gets scary.

Recommended.

Episodes 4 and 5 Make it Worth Watching

Åremorden (The Åre Murders) is a TV series based on Viveca Sten's books. The series' leading character is a police officer Hanna Ahlander (Carla Sehn), who has been suspended from her job in Stockholm and dumped by her partner when she moves to her sister's vacation home in Åre. The first, second, and third episodes are based on the "Offermakaren -Hidden in Snow" book. The fourth and fifth episodes are based on the "Dalskuggan - Hidden in Shadows" book. I really liked the fourth and fifth episodes because they were filmed according to the book. I believe that there should be a second season which consists of the other three books. I give seven over ten for the first season because of the episodes four and five.

Top murder mini series from Sweden

Don't miss these Netflix thriller episodes from Sweden. Three different murder stories well packed and fast paced guessing all the time who the real murder could be. It was not simple to solve but it was interesting to discover with the detectives the traces. It was never boring. Wonderful landscapes offered a special atmosphere for solving these mysteries. The main police woman and the police man delivered a respectable performance and the director had a good hand to create very suspenseful and breathtaking series.

If you like Scandinavian thrillers check out the Valhalla Murders. For all these reasons it deserves 7/10.

Riveting crime series from Sweden leaves us wanting more

As Episode 1 of "The Are Murders' (2025 release from Swe3den; 5 episodes ranging from 35 to 57 min) opens, 17 yo Amanda is at a house party in the remote town of Are, Sweden, and then leaves the party. In a parallel story that same evening, we are introduced to Hanna, of the Stockholm PD. Hanna has taken a two months' leave of absence and is driving towards the cabin of her sister's, in Are. Next morning, Amanda is missing... At this point we are less than 10 minutes into Episode 1.

Couple of comments: this TV mini-series is based on the Swedish book series "Hidden in Snow" (which covers the first 3 episodes) and "Hidden in Shadows" (which covers the last 2 episodes) by Viveva Sten. The connection between the two separate stories is Hanna, the Stockholm cop who shows up in Are looking to get away of whatever troubled her in the Swedish capital. The two stories are plot-heavy, so the less said of that, the better. I will simply say that I quite liked the first story "Hidden in Snow", and rate it 7/10. It does not prepare you for the second story "Hidden in Shadows", which absolutely blew me away, and which I rate 9/10, hence my overall rating of this mini-series of 8/10. The (for me no-names) cast is terrific throughout. "The Are Murders" is no-nonsense and gritty, and quite dark (in particular in the second story). I was hooked from start to finish. Now we hopefully await the further adventures of Hanna in the next book(s) from Ms. Sten...

"The Are Murders" started streaming on Netflix about a week ago, and I watched the 5 episodes over 2 evenings. The is currently rated 81% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and there is ample reason for that. If you love a top-notch crime series set in Sweden, I'd readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion.

Good Drama with a Slow Buildup

This series starts slowly but develops into an engrossing and quite moving drama.

We watched this first series as two movie length episodes (the first three half hour episodes and then the last two longer ones). This worked really well because each covers its own stand alone murder mystery.

I didn't mind the slow start because it allowed me to tune into the characters, their back stories and their developing relationships with one another. These elements are what made the last part of the show so absorbing. Both murder mysteries had some good surprises and the second part was truly chilling. The first part kind of fell apart at the resolution of the murder because I just couldn't believe that anyone would behave as recklessly as the victim did on the night of the murder, let alone a teenage girl.

The setting is fabulous and the cinematography really does it justice - beautiful drone shots combined with moody night and snow scenes really set the tone well.

Overall I highly recommend the series, just expect a slow start and a couple of plot problems and enjoy the tremendously good drama that follows.

Don't believe negative reviews!

As someone who always enjoys murder detective foreign stories, I started watching this because this is my preferred genre. Unfortunately, I then made the mistake of reading and paying attention to a couple of negative reviews, and stopped. I decided to go back and check it out for myself and I'm very glad I did. It is excellent film noir. Great character development, excellent acting and location is perfection. The plot lines really draw you in and you feel sympathy with the characters. The scenic location is highly enjoyable. I did not find it predictable at all. Definitely give it a try yourself!

[6.7] "Ora" murders

Not that the series truly deserves a "7" but it has elements of good Scandi Noir quality just in a diluted version. First of all, the detectives / officers are not bright, a little unlikable and bland. Second of all, the storyline plots are better than the acting, but never get the attention they deserve. The plots are a little hastily wrapped up and the good acting of the supporting cast don't save the episodes.

Series like that need to have more than 10-12 episodes for the viewers to get accustomed to the flow, to the more number of crimes and a grasp in quality.

2010s Nordic crime series were much better aside the one and only stellar 2007 'Forbrydelsen'.

Short series based on many books

One of the criticisms the series gets is that it's 3 stories in one mini series that's because it's based on more than one book. Maybe it would have been better to let all the cases carry them self out one at a time but it might be to slow then.

I think this is worth watching even though some of the actors are over acting and doesn't get a realistic portrayal.

The good part with the series is that the plots makes sense and are realistic. It's to common that the plots are so twisted that they get loopholes these days. Things like these are the common cause of homocide and not a psychotic serial killer.

It get better

I'd give episodes 1-2-3 a six, and episodes 4-5 a nine. So seven it is.

It's a good scandi-noir, but not too dark, not too gloomy. The winter atmosphere is perfect.

Not sure how I feel about main character - Hannah always has this strange face with her mouth half-open like she has some mental problems. Because she doesn't strike me as a brilliant detective. She's just good, empathetic, and doesn't stop.

Her back-story in Stockholm is never properly explained. It resolves so easily - was there even a reason to mention it?

Overall it all comes down to a story, and the first one was not very interesting. It started OK, but mostly it was bland. The motive was not interesting. The second one was much better, the red herrings were smarter, the ending - fantastic!

Failed to deliver

Stunning scenery and photography.

Good cast of main characters.

Five episodes made up of two storylines (episodes 1-3 and 4-5).

Profanities throughout, extreme in episode 4.

The stories let this Nordic drama down. It has all been done before. The second storyline was confusing and chaotic and it wasn't clear at the end as to what fate waited for a number of characters.

The now obligatory same sex relationship was not relevant to anything and seemed to be there for inclusion.

The hint of a relationship brewing between the main characters was annoying. It doesn't have to be that way. Helsinki Crimes for instance.

This could be a lot better and I expect there will be a second series, but the scripts will have to improve.

Elements of A gripping story

My opinion for what it is worth should also come with a contextual understand that I genuinely have read a lot of books in my life. That does not make me a story snob, but you would have to be literally dead not to look for certain key elements in stories and shows that fit into a particular category. This show hits all the marks of a drama with ease and fits into it like one of those reflective safety vests which should read "if you like dramas here i am!" If drama is your thing then run out and buy a puffy jacket. And remember Tom Brady owns puffy leather boots too (or at least he did in an advertisement once). Just Saying. I enoyed it-the show...and the Brady ad.

Great Scandinavian series

I loved the main actors - Incredible chemistry.

If you are a fan of Scandinavian crimes, mysteries, thrillers - you'll enjpy this one. Beautiful snow scenes and it's never boring. I especially loved the cinematography. Peaceful scenery. The main stories were engaging as well as the pacing was good.

I would recommend watching original language w/ all foreign films bc the English dubbed is always awful the voices never goes well meshing w the actors it's too fake sounding and annoying. I know subtitles aren't always conviennent but it'll be worth the time and effort. Plus you don't ever get bored w/ the stories or characters - like some series that slow burn or drag out.

I'd love to see more of the 2 main characters working together. I'm ready for season 2! They left you wanting more !

Ypu can predict the whole show

The Åre Murders is a Swedish crime series set in the picturesque but ominous landscapes of Åre, a small town known for its skiing resorts. The show has a lot of what fans of Nordic noir expect: atmospheric cinematography, a brooding protagonist, and a focus on intricate, dark mysteries. The setting, with its remote, wintry backdrop, adds to the overall moody and suspenseful tone of the series.

The plot follows detectives working to unravel a series of gruesome crimes, typically blending personal backstories with the main investigation. While it's well-paced and filled with suspense, it doesn't always push boundaries, relying on familiar crime drama tropes. Predictability is a common critique here, as many viewers may spot the twists before they arrive.

While the acting is solid, with performances often bringing emotional depth to the characters, the show can sometimes feel formulaic. The writing doesn't always provide enough innovation to truly stand out in the crowded field of Scandinavian crime thrillers.

Rating: 6/10 , watchable show for fans of the genre but one that doesn't offer anything particularly groundbreaking.

If this is not the show you were referring to, feel free to provide more details, and I'll update the review!

Entertaining and Mysterious

Just like you want a murder mystery to be. I liked the style of this one, effective and straightforward. The actors then had to show more than tell, and there were plenty of scenes whey they came through loud and clear. Breathtaking scenery about a part of the world we see little of in the States - but then I love foreign films for this very reason. Not everyone behaves like Americans and I love to immerse myself in other cultures' nuances. Of course we share a global commonality: murderers and police departments and family members all inextricably connected which makes for a basic premise that we love to journey through as we try to guess who-done-it also. Good writing keeps it unpredictable and this show delivers.

So what if there was a familiar scene from a famous horror film - a nice tribute to that film while treating it wholly differently. Good show. I would like to see it renewed for season two in order to follow through with the characters storylines - I'm already hooked!

Sadly a let down but in beautiful landscape

2 Stars for the beautiful snow Setting.

The rest: The first episodes really caught my attention. The beautiful snowy setting, the northern atmosphere, and the striking landscapes-nothing groundbreaking, but compelling enough to draw me in. The show introduced an intriguing mystery: a young girl's murder, a party, a grieving girl, and a case that seemed worth following.

But then came episode 3, and that's where things started to unravel. Suddenly, we were bombarded with multiple characters whose significance was unclear. A blonde, high-profile politician struggling with her husband's issues-yet this subplot never really went anywhere. Then, out of nowhere, the mystery rushed to a conclusion. The female detective nearly dies in the snow, suffering some kind of freezing injury-or so it seemed.

What frustrated me most was the sudden reveal of the girl's backstory. Her choices, particularly getting into a car with someone obviously suspicious, felt completely unrealistic. By that point, I found myself rolling my eyes. The mystery, which had been built up so well, was wrapped up hastily and unsatisfyingly.

Then came Episode 4, and to my complete surprise, a completely different case began. The female detective, despite her apparent near-death experience, was suddenly fine-no frostbite, no consequences. This second case, from what I've seen so far, is much simpler: a domestic violence situation that seems to have an obvious perpetrator. There's no real intrigue, no depth, and frankly, it feels pointless.

What started as a promising thriller ended as a bland, foreseeable drama with weak storytelling choices. Instead of a gripping mystery, the show left me disappointed and unsatisfied.

Not Emmy Award winning ( yet ) but enjoyable nonetheless

Nothing earth shattering or innovative in the script. It IS intriguing however , much in the same fashion as traditional Scandinavian police crime thrillers that we have come to love over the years from best selling authors such as Jo Nesbo and Jussi Adler-Olsen.

The lead actors provide compelling performances and we are given enough information in their backstory to identify with them yet still leave us wanting to know more.

The cinematography masterfully captures the natural settings where much of the action takes place and we can actually feel the coolness in the winter air which correlates to the chilling atmosphere of the stories .

The producers are definitely on to something here.

I certainly hope they renew for another season (s). 👍

Solid crime mystery

The Are murders is a solid Netflix crime series that outperforms expectations. It has a lot of subtlety, and builds a set of very likable, and 'slightly' complex characters, through a set of "whodunnits" that were genuinely difficult to figure out.

I like how they build tension, without making too many stressful hollywood-style twists. They also have great interpersonal dynamics, and touch on several social issues, without being too indulgent and leaning into too much drama. My main complaint is they didn't stretch the book content more. In the final episodes of each part, they sort of "sprint to the finish" of the plots. Overall, I would recommend giving it a go.
