A real-life expert reveals how cop shows exaggerate crime scene investigations for entertainment purposes. An extremely popular television genre, cop shows have been an entertainment mainstay for years now. Some of the best cop shows of all-time include The Wire, NYPD Blue, Justified, True Detective, The Shield, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and the CSI franchise.
Fans can't get enough of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit's cast and The Rookie gets mixed reviews, but it remains a ratings hit. Part of the reason why cop shows like those are so popular is how entertaining investigations are on television. However, an expert has revealed that one aspect of cop shows is often exaggerated for entertainment purposes.

[This story contains spoilers from Terminal List season one, and the premiere of Terminal List: Dark Wolf.]
Temperatures can get sweltering in Mosul, Iraq. But in the Middle Eastern city during 2015, it was the uncomfortable sting of violence and death that touched a nerve, changing the trajectory for a group who swore an oath to the country they represent.
This is where Prime Video’s Terminal List: Dark Wolf prequel series opens, revealing unspeakable horrors that might even shake a career Navy Seal officer to his core, such as Chief Ben Edwards played by Taylor Kitsch. The first three episodes of Dark Wolf that are now streaming wasted no time in showing how the madness of war can knock some soldiers off their path. Dark Wolf provides the origin story of what pushed Edwards and his loyal friend, Lt. Raife Hastings (Tom Hopper), into an even more chaotic world of pain and violence, but seemingly without any clear rules of engagement. Dark Wolf begins five years prior...

Nicolas Cage stars as a dad going through holy hell in the first teaser trailer for The Carpenter’s Son, a new horror film directed by Lofty Nathan and co-starring FKA twigs as Mother Mary.
Based on the Infancy Gospel of Thomas — which is not official canon, in the original sense of that word — The Carpenter’s Son will focus on Jesus’ adolescence, as portrayed by Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place). In this apocryphal gospel, Jesus is a pretty normal boy with sweet moods and temper tantrums — although unlike most kids his age, the tantrums arrive with supernatural vengeance. The Nicolas Cage resurgence as of late has interestingly mostly found him in more abstract kinds of films as opposed to his more commercially appealing blockbusters of yesteryear. While many have pined for a National Treasure 3, Cage has been partaking in indie films like Pig, Mandy and Dream Scenario. However, he would also mix in a couple of mass audience projects like The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Renfield. It was reported last year that Cage was set to star in The Carpenter’s Son, a horror tale that’s based on the rarely-told childhood of Jesus Christ.

“I need a fucking rom-com tomorrow,” Taylor Kitsch tells Empire. The actor is not one to shy away from roles that push him to the edge. The Friday Night Lights alumnus has built a career on playing men who more often than not have been through the wars, whether it’s an ill-fated Navy Seal in Peter Berg’s tense war movie Lone Survivor, a veteran-turned-cop in True Detective Season 2 or another tormented Seal, Ben, in Prime Video’s conspiracy-thriller series The Terminal List.
Kitsch now returns to his character for The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, a prequel spin-off that sees him take over the lead role from co-star Chris Pratt.

Between Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Jodie Foster, Colin Farrell, Mahershala Ali, and Rachel McAdams, “True Detective” has a knack for getting big movie stars onto the small screen, and the latest could be someone who has only recently dipped his toes into television: Nicolas Cage. In fact, the actor hinted way back in 2023 that he may only have a few movies left in him and would’ve wanted to “have left on a high note” before turning to TV.
Cage is in talks to star in the fifth season of “True Detective” for HBO, a source told IndieWire. This season is said to be set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City, and showrunner and writer Issa Lopez, who took over for creator Nic Pizzolatto for the fourth season, “Night Country,” is back. Any other plot details are still under wraps.

Nicolas Cage is deep in talks to star in True Detective season 5 — the next iteration of the moody crime drama.
The Oscar winner is up for an as-yet-unknown role in the anthology drama, but will presumably play the law enforcement officer at the center of another mystery thriller.
The season will follow up on HBO tapping another Oscar winner, Jodie Foster, headlining the anthology drama’s fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, to considerable acclaim. Night Country also was considered to have revived the brand, after a less-than-stellar previous two seasons.
The fourth season’s showrunner, Issa López, is expected to return for the new season. Earlier this year, HBO announced that season five would be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. The show is expected to premiere in 2027.

Nicolas Cage is in talks to star in the next season of True Detective, which is just about the best idea I’ve heard in a while. Jeff Sneider has heard that the actor is nearing a deal to play one of the leads in the new season. Issa López, the showrunner/writer/director of True Detective: Night Country, is returning.
The new season takes place in Jamaica Bay, New York, and Deadline has a few more details, adding that Cage would play Henry Logan, a New York detective tackling the new mystery.

HBO's True Detectiveseason 5 looks to have found its next acclaimed star in the form of Nicolas Cage. Originally created by Nic Pizzolatto, the series has chronicled the experiences of a new detective each season as their investigations into a series of violent crimes also impact their personal lives.
Helmed by Pizzolatto for the first three seasons before Issa López took over with season 4, True Detective started as one of the most acclaimed HBO shows ever, being hailed for its performances, atmosphere and direction. Subsequent seasons, however, saw more mixed reviews from critics, though the most recent season, Night Country, saw the best critical response since season 1.

Nicolas Cage is nearing a deal to star in “True Detective” Season 5 at HBO, Variety has learned from sources.
Details are being kept under tight wraps on the new season, but it was revealed earlier this year that Season 5 will be set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City.
Cage would be the latest high-profile star to take on a leading role in “True Detective.” Leads of past seasons include Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, and Jodie Foster. Harrelson, McConaughey, Ali, and Foster all earned Emmy nominations for their respective seasons, while Foster won both an Emmy and Golden Globe Award for her work in Season 4.
Reps for HBO declined to comment.
This would also mark just the second lead television role Cage has taken on in his storied career. It was revealed in 2024 that Cage would play Spider-Man Noir in a live-action...

Every small town carries its stories, but in Will Canon’s new feature The Confession, those stories fester into something far darker. Making its debut at this year’s FrightFest in London, the film reimagines the legend of the Pied Piper against the backdrop of rural Texas, exposing a family history bound up in violence, secrecy and supernatural menace.
Italia Ricci leads the cast as Naomi, a struggling musician who returns to her childhood home with her young son, Dylan. While unpacking the remnants of her father’s life, she stumbles upon an unsettling recording in which he confesses to a brutal murder. The revelation would be disturbing enough, but his claim that he acted to protect himself from a mysterious evil force raises deeper questions. As Naomi begins to notice her son’s increasingly troubling behaviour, the roots of her family’s past intertwine with the sinister folklore of her hometown.

The It films were terrifying in their own right — creepy sewers, strange visions, and a clown you’d cross continents to avoid. But there’s something about Welcome to Derry that feels different — it’s just not about replaying old nightmares, but something even more unsettling we are not aware of. This is ground zero for the fear, the moment the town’s curse took root.
And now, we’re finally going to see just how far Derry’s darkness spreads.
From what we know, HBO isn’t rushing the scares. Instead, it appears that they are creating an atmosphere that gradually seeps into you with each episode. The kind that makes you mistrust every shadow, every flicker of light, and every neighbor who smiles a bit too broadly. The series will stretch back decades before the Losers’ Club, filling in the blanks the films only hinted at.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine star Taylor Kitsch addresses being replaced by Channing Tatum in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kitsch played Gambit, a prisoner of William Stryker on Three Mile Island, who helped Wolverine locate it and later saved him from a falling cooling tower. Tatum was considered for the role in the movie, but due to scheduling conflicts, the star had to drop out.
In Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum made a cameo appearance as Gambit. He's also scheduled to play a part in Avengers: Doomsday, in which he is expected to reprise the Cajun superhero.
In an interview with ScreenRant about Prime Video's The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, set to premiere on August 27, Kitsch, who reprises his role as Ben Edward, talked briefly about being replaced by Tatum as Gambit in the MCU. The star admitted that he hasn't seen Tatum's version and clarified that "Gambit wasn't in the cards" for him.

If a movie is going to be mostly close-up reactions of its lead actor, then the actor needs to have an expressive face.
