I had low expectations based on the description but since it was A24 produced, I gave it a chance. Is it revolutionary? No. Is it deeply thought provoking? No. But it IS highly entertaining. I could relate to Benny in so many ways as a gay man who had very similar struggles when coming out. A lot of the plot is classic early 2000s era raunchy comedy, but there's something nostalgic about it. Even though Benny is a very privileged white male, I liked seeing a gay lead protagonist. Also loved Baram and Barone. Great character arcs in a single season. The gratuitous male nudity doesn't hurt either. I hope there are more seasons and really hope this doesn't become another one-and-done show that gets cancelled for the next big idea flop. Overcompensating left me wanting to see what happens next and it's a lighthearted, funny comedy that fills a niche that's been empty for years.
I stumbled on this show and it's unexpectedly funny and easy to watch. Good storytelling, relatable characters, great packaging. I haven't enjoyed a comedy series like this in a while.
We're experiencing college through the eyes of the two freshmen protagonists, Benny and Carmen, who come with their own baggage which could be a deep well of plots and storylines for subsequent seasons. I appreciate that some of these potential stories might have to be set off-campus which is refreshing in itself.
Also, credit goes to the secondary/supporting cast for being just as compelling. Peter's storyline may be only second to Benny's in terms interest.
Very good show.

The talented Benito Skinner not only stars, but also created and wrote this college campus comedy about being chameleons in one's peer social surroundings in order to survive the humiliation of being a nobody freshie. In Benny's case, he is gay, and in this day and age he attempts to hide it under the facade of a high school football star from Ohio (or was it Idaho?) Nevertheless, Benny has a hard time coming out, and along the way he befriends another freshie, Carmen, who together navigate their new world in an overblown send-up of college life and all the ridiculous situations that come with it, but with an emotional depth that surprises with each episode...
As someone who's seen a lot of television and is bored by most of it due to how slow the plot progresses, I appreciate when I finds a show where literally every episode and you're 100% in. Every episode explores a new story arc and I love that I can't stop watching. I've followed Benito Skinner for years and his humor is so specific and funny that I was having 2010s flashbacks 😂 He stars and wrote it so we have Benny's quick wit to thank for creating this gem. And convincing Charli XCX to be in it. Also love breaking down the stereotypes of college, growing beyond labels and how we are all human going through the same experience.

I hope this is the formidable beginning to a very successful career in writing as well of course, acting! I've come upon this by chance and took a chance and was impressed enough to pay closer attention to the credits and low and behold.... It's touching and thoughtful enough to make me nostalgic for college as well as seeing the other side of the experience for LGBT students and individuals. It's poignant as well as awkward and cringe enough to draw the viewer into the two main characters lives and situations, in a manner that is intelligently considered - I truly truly have enjoyed my time - thank you... Good luck in life.
This whole thing is exactly my kind of humor! These are my kind of characters, my kind of style. I absolutely loved all of this so much. OH and the SOUNDTRACK like HELLO?? Banger slay needle drops. There's lots of silly jokes, clever jokes, stupid stuff, and lots of bits, even down to the editing and over the top language at times, and it all works super, super well. It's nonstop laughing and nonstop emotion-cried in episode five 🙏🏼- I also love how classic it feels. Instantly iconic and quotable. It's also not afraid to make messy jokes while coming from a place of care and love. Cannot wait for more!!!

Which of these scenes were not included in Animal House, a 1970s flick about post-50s, early 1960s collegiate life?
Freshmen expectations, beer, fake IDs, beer, partying, beer, blood, beer, cafeteria drama, beer, scoring, beer, fraternity antics, beer, confusion, beer, change in academic plans for lust, beer, etc.
With many "out" people and groups on campus today, the coming out fears expressed relate to a few (while in the time period of Animal House, most were mocked, shunned, or worse).
Which begs the question: who is the intended audience of this series?
I'm not really sure. And what is its redeeming value? Haven't discovered it yet, but I'm only midway through episode 4.

I haven't laughed this hard at a show in a while. There's so many poignant moments (especially between Benny and Carmen) and really nails the college friendship/relationship experience. Congratulations to Benito Skinner and the writers room for knocking it out of the park and managing to give each character so much depth and dimension all in one season. The cameos and music are 10/10 and thank you for introducing the world to Holmes. The jokes are so good but I've had to rewind certain scenes because blink and you might miss something. It deserves a second viewing and if you're a true Benito fan than you won't be disappointed. This better be renewed for season 2!

It is a good show but people are praising it like it's a new season of breaking bad for the gays! I felt like nothing happened very much during the whole season. The main character is so annoying and don't know what he really wants that pisses me off so much...he can't even say a complete sentence without pauses and strange face gestures. The nostalgia is cool, but please don't compare it to American Pie, because American Pie was way better (at least the first movies)
Adults by Hulu is way better than this show and unfortunately no one is talking about it. It got released at the same time and got overshadowed by overcompensating.

"Overcompensating" is chaotic, messy, loud-and absolutely brilliant. It's the kind of show that grabs you from the first scene and refuses to let go, barreling forward with a frenetic energy that somehow manages to hold itself together in the most entertaining ways. What could easily have spiraled into incoherence instead feels like a masterclass in controlled chaos.
The writing is sharp, fast-paced, and refreshingly bold. Every episode feels like a dare-testing how far the show can push its characters, plots, and even its own tone without losing the audience. And it works. Just when you think it can't get more absurd, it does, and yet somehow it all still feels intentional. That's a hard trick to pull off, and "Overcompensating " nails it.
The cast deserves serious praise for bringing this madness to life. Each character is over-the-top in the best possible way, and yet they're grounded just enough to make you care. Their performances are full of commitment, balancing humor and heart even in the most outrageous scenarios. No one feels wasted; everyone gets a moment to shine-or explode spectacularly.
There's also a strange kind of emotional undercurrent that sneaks up on you. Beneath all the mayhem, the show is clearly saying something about identity, insecurity, and the bizarre ways we try to prove ourselves to the world. That layer of sincerity, buried under the satire and spectacle, is what truly sets it apart.
At its core, "Overcompensating" feels like a show that knows exactly what it is and leans all the way in. It's self-aware without being smug, chaotic without being confusing, and consistently surprising without feeling cheap. I laughed, I gasped, I questioned my own sanity a few times-but I was never bored.
Here's hoping they continue to make more seasons, because this is the kind of fearless storytelling we need more of. If this is what "too much" looks like, then give me more.

Well written show with good acting from leads. Outside of the 3 leads, all the other characters are whacked. Carmen ( Wally Baram) is significantly better looking than the other females on the show, so her having to basically beg dudes is not quite believable, but it is what it is. Lots of good dialog and cool guest stars. The men, in general, are depicted as total uneducated pervert a-holes and are all unlikable ( as are almost everyoneone else on the show). Also not all men like rap music. Overall, a nice showing from Amazon studios and the show is entertaining and. It's neat that Benny wrote and stars.
Why is Benny waxed chest wearing so much makeup and spray tanned? What era is it? They're whipping and nay-naying but recording dance tiktoks on an iPhone 15.. it's a little disjointed, I feel like there were too many yes-men on this project because it has potential but the execution is just off. Music is also not consistent with any decade, Charlie came in as herself in 2025... if this is the early 2010s shouldn't she have been dressed as such?
The inconsistencies took me out of it, and a lot of the acting is plain bad, sorry.. I am trying to like it, because I really like Benny but it fell flat for me.

This show was everything.
The cast and its ensemble had me cracking up with its comedic timing and the story.
The story was truly a funny one it's lighthearted and gay fun. The whole time I'm yelling at the screen telling Benny to come out.
The ending was truly amazing I was shocking and I really want another season A24 better clutch up and keep this show.
I think this show can really relate to everyone I mean I relate to the crazy blonde roommate I mean I embody that woman and applaud the actress.
All the actors did such an amazing job with this show and if they cancel this show i will get very mad.

I watched this series with very little expectation and it literally blew me away . I loved the amount of importance each and every character is given and the amount of emotional depth that is been given makes it a hammerhit.long way to go benny.
The true charm of Skinner's writing is how deeply personal it feels. Even while dressed in a toga, chugging alcohol of dubious origins, there's an emotionality and relatability balancing out the hijinks, making it easy to want to cheer Benny on, even when he's-by his own admission-not a good guy.
Hitting all the expected tropes of college campus fare in a way that feels more familiar than cliched, Overcompensating keeps things light and airy, setting the tone with original music from Charli XCX and an endless stream of cameos from the likes of James Van Der Beek, Kaia Gerber, Lukas Gage and Megan Fox.

This show is such an amazing representation of how difficult it can be to hide one's true self. It's hilarious, heartbreaking, sexy, and poignant. There is so much good talent on this show and every episode will leave you wanting more.
Skinner also does a masterful job at incorporating cultural signposts that have defined queer culture in such a meaningful way. The time in which the show is supposed to be set of is not totally obvious, which I think allows for people of all ages to find things they can identify with.
Whether yourself, or someone in your life, has ever struggled to find their identity, this show will definitely resonate.
I ride for this show!

Overcompensating (2025) is a fun and wild ride - a clever mix of American Pie, Mean Girls, and Glee (with less singing but just as much drama and attitude). The series delivers plenty of hilarious moments, sharp dialogue, and over-the-top college chaos that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
Charli XCX's music is a perfect fit for the show's energetic tone. The cast has great chemistry, and the show doesn't shy away from pushing boundaries in all the right ways.
If you're into teen comedies with bite and flair, this one's for you. Here's hoping Season 2 turns the volume up even more - we're ready for it.

This is a new take on an well explored theme of trying to fit in at college. There is the usual cast of characters and misfits, but the gay closeted theme is the focus here. The big problem is that despite the industrial strength makeup, the lead role is just not a match for the actor. It's a stretch to imagine someone in their 30s playing a 20 year old. One really has to try hard. Other than that, exploration of the "old" theme of "coming out" in today's era is not badly done, and each episode does have its special moments. It's watchable and often entertaining if one can get past the poor casting fit.

I had a really great time with this series! It's as well a hilarious comedy, as an endearing coming-of-age and coming-out story. But there's also a more general serious note, about people not daring to show their true self, out of fear of not fitting in. So the "overcompensating" of main character Benny (hiding his slumbering gay feelings under a smoke-screen of blaring macho behavior) can also be applied to many of the other characters, like his BFF Carmen, his sister Grace and Grace's boyfriend Peter.
I did have a few reservations too. Benny is a freshman at University, so clearly supposed to be like 18 or 19 years old, and as much as I do appreciate Benito Skinner (who also created and co-wrote this series), he clearly looks his actual 30-plus age, which for me was a serious distraction in every scene of him among his fellow students. With his sister Grace it's the same, actress Mary Beth Barone even being 34 years old at the time, and (in a beautiful way) looking like it.
Another thing that got slightly tiresome were the mannerisms of Skinner to act his awkwardness, with all this twitching and giggling and rattling. As a gay person myself, I dare to say that this made his intended macho behavior in fact look extremely (and rather stereotyped) gay (and the gullible bystanders apparently blind as bats), so this pulled the rug a bit from under the premise of the story. And last but not least: why bring in wonderful Lukas Cage for just 5 minutes?! But hopefully he's bound to reappear, since the last episode ended with a promising cliffhanger.

I liked this show way better than Netflix Forever and I mean that wholeheartedly. I'm comparing it to that show bc they're both college shows and came out around the same time. I don't understand why the rating is so low!?
Initially, I was excited about this show bc when I found out it was a A24 show! I was super excited. My expectations were not disappointed! It made me laugh, it made me tear up, it made me root for the main couple! Also the music and the cameos!? It was everything!
We better get a s2 prime seriously! You have a track record like Netflix! I need that renewal immediately! I need to see what happens next fr.

When I began to watch this, I was quite pleased with the raunchy tone and the eye candy. After a short while I was wondering about the real ages of the actors and a bit bothered if the whole concept could last 8 full episodes. When I was half through the 1st season I checked my watch constantly and got distracted by the weird behaviour of the straight characters which became more annoying by the minute. I admit that there were still jokes that were hysterically funny but in general 8 X 33 minutes is too long for a show that has basically nothing new to tell. And when I realized that there will be a 2nd season, I asked myself if I really want to see it.

In the first episodes, the show tone and comedy may seem too exaggerated and unrealistic, but as episodes went by, I noticed how into the story and characters I were. All the cringe stuff and how characters overreact on happiness, excitement, and other emotions may be a drop off for some viewers, but in my personal opinion I was very satisfied once I accepted the show's tone and humour.
It's plot doesn't move mountains, but you will probably catch yourself cheering for Benny and Carmen to be happy and get what they want.
In general, I hope it doesn't get cancelled and that we get more episodes as fast as possible, because in the end, it was a very catching story yo follow up.
