KPop Demon Hunters: Sony's $100 Million Budget & Theatrical Release Potential
Image
KPop Demon Hunters is the smash hit of the summer, in part because it went to streaming rather than having a traditional theatrical release, but its success makes it hard not to wonder what could have been. Reaching 186.4 million views, the animated fantasy adventure about a trio of K-pop stars moonlighting as demon hunters is now the second most-watched Netflix movie of all time.

However, it has been increasingly difficult for original movies to win over the box office in recent years, and even a phenomenon as big as this might have struggled if Sony Pictures had released it theatrically. Yet it is clear that Sony has lost something huge as KPop Demon Hunters continues to top both streaming and music charts.

A report published by Puckbreaks down what Sony's potential financial losses are due to the sale of KPop Demon Hunters to Netflix. According to Matthew Belloni, the estimated...

Despicable Me 2 Climbs Netflix Top 10, 12 Years After Theatrical Release(Photo Credit –YouTube)

Despicable Me 2 has significantly returned over a decade after it first hit theaters. The film, which helped push Illumination into the same league as Disney and Pixar, is now climbing Netflix’s charts. As of August 15, it holds the No. 8 spot among movies in the United States, per Flixpatrol.

Despicable Me 2 Was A Box Office Hit That Cemented Illumination’s Status

When the animated sequel premiered in 2013, it earned over $970 million worldwide, becoming Illumination’s top-grossing title. The first Despicable Me was already a solid success with $543 million, but the sequel proved the studio could compete at the highest level. Its box office total even outperformed every Walt Disney Animation Studios release since The Lion King ($771m) in 1994, though Frozen would later that same year take the crown with $1.2 billion.

Alan Tudyk confirms he won’t be voicing this popular character in Disney’s live-action ‘Moana’
Image
Here's some fowl news: Disney's beloved Moana franchise is making the leap from animation to live action next year, but Alan Tudyk won't be coming along for the ride. The actor and Mouse House voiceover star provided the clucks and crows for the title character's trusty rooster sidekick Heihei in the Oscar-nominated 2016 original and its box-office-record-breaking 2024 sequel. But the feathery baton will pass to another performer in the live-action Moana, due in theaters on July 10, 2026.

"Heihei will be played by someone else," Tudyk confirms to Gold Derby during a conversation about his Emmy-nominated voiceover role in the Disney+ series Andor. The actor adds that the "someone else" will be a female performer whose casting has yet to be revealed. "Everybody calls Heihei a chicken, even though he's a rooster," Tudyk jokes. "So it's about time they got an actress to put a little more 'chick' in the chicken."

The live-action...

The ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Craze Couldn’t Have Happened in Movie Theaters
Image
This summer’s zeitgeist-defining animated film isn’t coming from theaters. It’s coming from streaming with Netflix/Sony Animation’s “KPop Demon Hunters,” which has defied gravity in a way that no film in the streamer’s history has ever achieved before.

Since its June 20 release, the original English-language animated film about Huntr/x, a K-Pop trio who uses their music and sharp blades to protect Korea from soul-devouring demons, has only snowballed in popularity, passing “Carry-On” and the Oscar-nominated “Don’t Look Up” this week to become the second most-watched film in Netflix history. And in two weeks, theaters will finally be able to partake in the cultural phenomenon when a sing-along version hits the big screen for a limited weekend engagement.

The rise of “KPop Demon Hunters” comes as Hollywood faces a conundrum on how to get the public engaged with new stories and characters — a problem that...

How Republic Nabbed the Soundtrack of the Year With ‘KPop Demon Hunters’
Image
It’s difficult to overstate how big a summer Sony Pictures Animation’s KPop Demon Hunters is having. Netflix now has its biggest animated original film of all time, and with it, Universal Music Group’s Republic Records and its now red-hot new record label partner Visva have what could go down as the biggest soundtrack of 2025.

Both the movie and its songs are on the cusp of a moment not seen since 2022, when Encanto’s “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” took over the world and became Disney’s highest-charting song of all time. And as “Golden,” Demon Hunters’ biggest hit thus far, has reached a new high at Number 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 this week, it’s a moment that could be about to materialize.

“I still have to keep pinching myself every morning when I wake up and look at the charts, we’re a month in...

Amid KPop Demon Hunters' massive success, all signs point to a sequel
Image
Sony Animation Studios, the same company that brought us hits like the Spider-Verse movies and The Mitchells versus The Machines, took a wild turn with one of their latest releases, KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix.

It's as if they combined Power Rangers, Sailor Moon, and the K-pop music genre. The story follows an all-girl music group, Huntr/X, who come from a long line of warrior musicians wielding their voices to strengthen the veil between humans and demons. The veil begins to deteriorate when an all-boys music group, the Saja Boys, who are secretly a band of demons, starts to steal the girls' fans.

With singing not the only battle they have, while in the dark, the girls don armor and take up weapons to kill demons up close and personal.

It's safe to say that no one should underestimate the reach of Korean music, Eastern animation styles, and fantasy as a whole.

Ji-young Yoo, Ejae Kim, Arden Cho, and May Hong in KPop Demon Hunters (2025)
KPop Demon Hunters Could Expand with Sequels, Live-Action, Stage Musicals, World Domination
Ji-young Yoo, Ejae Kim, Arden Cho, and May Hong in KPop Demon Hunters (2025)
KPop Demon Hunters is Netflix‘s most-popular animated offering yet, and according to a report from The Wrap, Netflix hasn’t been shy about hoping the musical fantasy becomes their own version of Frozen. The streamer is mulling multiple sequels, a short bridge film (remember “Frozen Fever?” in 2015?), a stage musical, and even a live-action adaptation.

Kdh follows the girl group Huntr/x as they battle demons in the form of a boy group, Saja Boys. In classic House of Mouse tradition, these fantasy elements serve a personal coming-of-age narrative, in this case about a girl struggling with shame. After the film’s drop on June 20th, the music broke streaming containment and charted on Billboard.

While no follow-ups are official yet, co-ceo Ted Sarandos is making franchise expansion one of the company’s top priorities. During a second quarter earnings call in July, Sarandos hailed the “phenomenal success out of the gate…...

New Demon Slayer Movie Breaks Major Box Office Record – But There's a Catch
Image
In 2020, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train made history, as it became the highest-grossing film at the Japanese box office -- a record it still holds today. Now, in 2025, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Infinity Castle is looking to be following in its predecessor's footsteps -- but it has several anime movies to beat first, even as it enters the top 10 biggest box office successes of all time in its home country.

The newest Demon Slayer movie has become one of the most successful Japanese films of all time, and is now working to surpass the rest of the top 10. The list of the ten highest-grossing films in Japan is still topped by Mugen Train, but that doesn't mean that every member of the top 10 is an anime, or even a Japanese production, although several notable entries are, per Japanese news site Oricon.

One Ghibli Film Proves Hayao Miyazaki Should Make a Full-Fledged Romance Story
Image
The Wind Rises proves that Hayao Miyazaki isn’t just the king of flying castles, soot sprites, and heartwarming chaos; he also has the chops to absolutely crush a full-blown romance movie, and he really should do it. Yes, there has always been romance in Ghibli films: like the sweet mutual admiration between Ashitaka and San from Princess Mononoke or even the magical messiness of Sophie and Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle.

But we’re talking real, grown-up, heart-thumping, tear-jerking romance, the sort that crashes into you like a train. And guess what? Hayao Miyazaki nailed it in The Wind Rises, that beautiful, melancholic, painfully underrated gem from 2013. It’s a deeply emotional love story about a man obsessed with his passion, a woman battling illness, and a relationship blooming quietly amidst chaos. Let’s dive in.

Wait, What? Hayao Miyazaki Made a Romance Film?!

So, in The Wind Rises...

"I'm done hiding, now I'm shining like I'm born to be." That's the chorus of Huntr/X's hit single "Golden," which shot to the top of the Billboard Global 200 not just once but twice as the film "KPop Demon Hunters" has become a bonafide blockbuster for Netflix.

Produced by the team at Sony Pictures Animation, who also brought us the "Spider-Verse" films, "KPop Demon Hunters" follows the exploits of a K-pop girl group that, as the title quickly explains, hunts demons. But they find their toughest match when the demons use their own weapon against them, forming a demon boy band that threatens to destroy everything the girls in Huntr/X hold dear.

Using the power of song and dance to protect the human world from demon interlopers, the film uses the infectious beats of Korean pop music to bring the classic genre of animated musicals into the 21st century.

Netflix to Expand Animated Hit ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ into Franchise
Image
Netflix’s animated film “K-Pop Demon Hunters” is set to grow into a larger animated franchise, potentially including live-action adaptations, following its tremendous popularity this summer.

Netflix is comparing “K-Pop Demon Hunters” to Disney’s “Frozen” franchise.

According to recent reporting from The Wrap and corroborated by industry sources, Netflix is actively considering expanding “K-Pop Demon Hunters” into a trilogy. The platform is also exploring options for animated shorts, live-action projects, and additional media to maintain fan engagement while future films are developed, although these plans are still preliminary and subject to change.

Record-Breaking Viewership

Netflix confirmed that “K-Pop Demon Hunters” has become its most-viewed original animated movie ever. This achievement is notable given Netflix’s evolving approach to measuring success. It did so well before the new 91-day window given to animation and family content.

KPop: Demon Hunters Return On the Cards? Netflix Could Be Eyeing Anime Sequels and a Live-Action Remake
Image
Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation’s KPop Demon Hunters has turned out to be a true shocker, amassing 26.3 million views in its sixth week. Now, as The Wrap reports, the streamer is reportedly aiming to make a franchise with the animated flick, including sequels, a stage musical, a series, and even a live-action film.

Currently having a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is being hailed as Netflix’s ‘Frozen’, especially considering the little attention it received during the developmental phase. But now, the streamer is laying the groundwork for a broader universe— now that the Korean wave is at its highest— hoping to use the film’s success as a driving force.

KPop Demon Hunters Future Got Just The Best Netflix Update Yet
Image
KPop Demon Hunters just got a massive reported sequel update. The animated movie is one of Netflix's most successful films this year, consistently making the Top 10 list. It has achieved international acclaim, in part because of its incredible voice cast, which includes Squid Game's Lee Byung-hun, among others.

Since the film's impressive success, there have been many discussions about it becoming a franchise. While these rumors have mostly stemmed from fans who are obsessed with the movie's melodies and characters, star Arden Cho has already teased a potential sequel. Back in June, Cho noted that KPop Demon Hunters is "a big world" that could warrant continued exploration.

Per TheWrap, KPop Demon Hunters reportedly will be continuing. Netflix is now planning not one, but two KPop Demon Hunters sequels, making it into a trilogy. The streamer is also reportedly planning a live-action iteration, and even potentially a TV series and stage musical.

Netflix Eyes Expansion of Global Smash Hit ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Through Sequels and Beyond
Image
They sing. They dance. They kick demon ass so well that KPop Demon Hunters have become a global phenomenon. So much so that Netflix is already eyeing sequels and more.

Sony Pictures Animation’s animated hit, now streaming on Netflix, continues to smash records.

It became the first Netflix original film to reach a new viewing peak in its sixth week and is now the most popular animated Netflix movie of all time, per the streamer. The film’s music, particularly the track “Golden,” has reclaimed the number one spot on the Billboard 200.

All of which to say that KPop Demon Hunters has fans clamoring for more, and The Wrap notes that Netflix is already considering ways to expand the film’s success through sequels and beyond. “Among the projects being bandied about at Netflix are a stage musical, live-action remake, series, and, of course, a pair of sequels to...

How ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Became Netflix’s ‘Frozen’ | Exclusive
Image
Earlier this week, Sony Pictures Animation’s “KPop Demon Hunters” made Netflix history.

It became the first Netflix original film to reach a new viewing peak in its sixth week – a massive 26.3 million views, topping the previous week (25.8 million) and the week before that (24.2 million). In its sixth week it also became “the most popular Netflix animated film of all time,” according to the streaming giant.

Additionally, it was in the top 10 in all countries ranked and it should be entering the Netflix all-time top 10 in the next week or so. Plus, “Golden,” a song from its bop-filled soundtrack, returned to the #1 spot on the Billboard Global 200. All of this cemented the fact that “Kpop Demon Hunters” isn’t just a movie but a rare worldwide phenomenon.

TheWrap has learned that “KPop Demon Hunter” is about to expand into a number of related projects, including sequels and a live-action version.

Disney Goes Dark With Official New Sleeping Beauty Reveal
Image
Disney's pantheon of princesses would hardly be complete without Aurora -- a beautiful young woman afflicted with a tragic curse that can only be broken by true love's kiss. Recently, Japan released a series of official illustrations featuring a bold new depiction of Disney's Sleeping Beauty.

Per PR Times, Japanese publisher Gakken Co. Ltd recently unveiled never-before-seen artwork from the Japanese version of Disney's Twisted Tale book series. The latest volume, titled A Twisted World - Someday In a Dream, Sleeping Beauty, features front cover art of the titular character in a gleaming silver cuirass and wielding a sword. This depiction stands in sharp contrast to the original Sleeping Beauty, which is occasionally criticized for the lack of agency granted to its main heroine. The back cover depicts Maleficent with an unconscious Aurora in her arms. These illustrations were created by "Mizutamaridori," who has served as the main artist for...

The animated fantasy adventure movie about a K-pop girl group who double as demon hunters has defied all expectations, to say the least. ScreenRant's Ash Crossan spoke with industry icon Daniel Dae Kim about his new action thriller TV show Butterfly at San Diego Comic-Con, and asked about the actor's experience with KPop Demon Hunters as well. Kim, who plays the...

A24 announces a new English-language voice cast led by Michelle Yeoh for the highest-grossing animated film Ne Zha 2
Lewis Black, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira, Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Maya Hawke, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Paul Walter Hauser, and Ayo Edebiri in Vice-versa 2 (2024)
When most people think about the highest-grossing animated films of all time, they gravitate toward movies like Pixar’s Inside Out 2 ($1.6B+), Disney’s Frozen II ($1.4B+), The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.3B+), and 2013’s Frozen ($1.3B+). However, there’s one film that outshines them all: Yang Yu aka Jiaozi’s Ne Zah 2, a Chinese animated film that, earlier this year, earned $2.215B at the global box office. It goes without saying that more people should experience this animated phenomenon, and now, thanks to A24, they will!

According to A24, an English-language dub of Ne Zah 2 will be released on August 22. It will feature Michelle Yeoh as the lead character’s mother, Lady Yin.

“A rebellious young boy, Ne Zha, is feared by the gods and born to mortal parents with wild, uncontrolled powers,” a synopsis for the film reads. “Now he’s faced with an ancient force intent on destroying humanity,...
