When I started watching this kdrama I felt like it was kind of childish. But I thought to give it some more try, because I love so much Lee Seung Gi!
To my surprise, it was becoming better and better, episode after episode!!!
Finally it evolved to a GREAT LOVE STORY!!!
It made me even cry in the last few episodes, but made me also laugh with many funny scenes!
It's a series full of pure and innocent love, a love that gives it all, and this is the way that love should exist in our world!
Lee Seung Gi and Shin Min-A were EXCEPTIONAL in their acting and brought the series to a higher level!!!!
Fantasy, Romance, Adventure, Love... I am so grateful that I saw this kdrama!
It really worth to see it!!!!!!!

My Girlfriend is a Gumiho is a Korean televised melodrama that aired back in 2010. I've seen a lot these types of shows over the years and this one's not bad. I won't heap the undeserved praise (my opinion) on it that the other two reviewers did, and I feel its current IMDb rating of 8.2 stars is a bit on the high side. Nevertheless, it is good enough and solidly watchable.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
If you don't know what a Gumiho is, you clearly haven't watched much Korean cinema. This is at least the 6th different Korean movie or show I can think of (just off the top of my head) that involves one; there are probably dozens more of these stories though. A Gumiho is a mythical creature in Korean folklore; a nine tailed fox to be precise. The most similar mythical creature I can compare it to in western culture is a mermaid, and that's because they are both usually beautiful enticing creatures with or without supernatural powers that may or may not lead to your doom if you happen upon one.
Gumiho stories and mermaid stories have been overused to say the least, but both legends provide a wide ranging spectrum to craft a story however you like. I've seen some really dark gumiho-centric stories, that involve torturing men and eating their livers, bringing about the destruction of the human race, taking over the world, etc. This particular show sits on the other end of the spectrum, and it's basically just a fluffy romantic comedy.
I don't really have any problems with this show, it's just that it's pretty forgettable; it breezes right in and breezes right away just as quickly. Shin Min-a is your lead actress (the Gumiho). I've always had a thing for her, but that pretty much goes the same for any talented and pretty Korean actress. She's solid enough here. The lead actor is played by Lee Seung-gi, who is a young solo singing artist that I don't recall seeing in any acting role before this. He doesn't yet have the star power of Min-a, but he did just fine in his role as well. He plays a struggling young action actor who's trying to break into the big time. EDIT 10-9-2018: Seung-gi is quite well known now compared to when I originally wrote this review years ago.
The story (which I will try to recall from memory) begins with Min-a trying to be married off in the Joseon era. Rumors are swirling that she might be a Gumiho though, so she has no takers; everyone fears it will bring doom and destruction upon their village, and as a man, I'd rather slowly destroy my liver the old fashioned way, instead of having it ripped out of my torso and watch it being eaten as I die a painful death. Heartbroken that nobody wants her, Min-a realizes she has no place in society and is subsequently banished into a temple painting/mural to be stored for all eternity (this is another common Korean legend concerning how immortal and inhuman creatures, beasts, etc...can be dispatched of). I can't remember if she does this voluntarily out of sheer despair, or is captured by a Gumiho hunter.
Flash forward to 2010. Min-a is getting pretty tired of "living" in this painting for the last several hundred years, so she tricks our young male lead who happens upon the temple into uttering the right phrase or doing the right thing that will release her. He does so, and from there it's mostly a straightforward "mythical" rom-com (kind of along the lines of the American movie: "Splash"). There are lots of cute moments that follow where he discovers who/what she really is, and where she learns about the modern world and follows him around so she can eat more of her favorite dish (i.e. cow). Her 9 tails pop out uncontrollably whenever she gets overly excited, and she's helps him out of numerous jams using her super human abilities. At one point, she even saves his life using her special powers.
The 2 leads quickly begin to fall in love, but all is not perfect; other characters find out about, or begin to suspect something is a little off with, Min-a, as she and Seung-gi try to keep her true identity secret. There's also a modern day Gumiho hunter (who apparently does not understand how shirt buttons work) that's hot on her trail. Eventually, Min-a decides she wants to become human and live her life as a "normal" person with her true love. She's given a magical elixir by the Gumiho hunter that may just fulfill her wishes; it's not without risks though, as she or her new love or both may perish if she takes it. Down the hatch it goes though and let's see what happens.
From there, it's a matter of what will happen to the two leads as they wait to see if they'll survive her transformation into becoming a human. And, of course, whether he, she, or both survive is dependent upon how strong their love is for one another.
Bottom Line: I don't think this show belongs in the 8-10 star range the current IMDb reviews and ratings suggest (again, just my opinion). I've seen a lot of Korean melodramas over the years, so I feel I have a pretty good prospective on this genre. That being said (written), this show is quite enjoyable overall, and I have no problem recommending it. I also think it's a good recent "starter" show if you're not yet familiar with KTV dramas, as it's not as overly "taxing" as many other KTV melodramas can often be. It's a light and short comedic romance series that's pretty effective at what it's trying to accomplish, and what's not to like about that?
I think 7 stars is just about right, so that's what I'm giving it!

The title and the main plot are so simple, not attractive to watch. But I gave it a chance by trying 1st episode on Netflix due to picture of Shin Min Ah on the poster. Then I cannot stop watching it. So addictive. The chemical between 2 main actors is very real. I felt like they are actually love each other so much like true love not love because director told them to. In my opinion, this show is just perfect I've never want this show to finish. Til this day, I'm still not be able to find k-series to replace this show.
TLDR: Must watch.
TLDR: Must watch.
I don't know where to start. I have never felt emotions so strong before in my life. Yes, In my life, I have watched hundreds of war and romantic movies based on love. At best, they are able to bring emotions in which my eyes get little watery in the end. This show made be cry out loud because of happiness and pain. It was as if I was experiencing same kind of emotions what mi-ho and dae-woong was going through. I got so attached to them that 1 hour of episode felt like 10 minutes. I wish I was a writer so that I can put my feelings in words better. Lol . I have watched so many Hollywood TV shows and movies before and none of them was able to touched my heart deeply as with this show. I watched this show in 2020 almost after 10 years or so. If it wasn't for netflix, I wouldn't have ever find this show. Since I am an Indian, I watched with English subtitles but though you don't have to worry about it since subtitles on Netflix was spot on. Throughout the show, I never felt for even once that I was watching a show in foreign language. I am glad I discovered this show and was able to experience the emotions I never felt before seeing anything on TV before. If I had money I would have dubbed it in Hindi language so wider audience in India can enjoy it. I have IMDB account from past five years and have been regularly cataloguing titles I have watched here. But this is the first time I felt like reviewing a title. At last I hope, I can find a cute and pretty girl like Mi-ho in my life, it will definitely be a life worth living. Loving, caring and getting old together. This show brough a sense of responsibility in my life, it brought positivity and I will cherish this feeling as long as I can. Thank you.

The acting in this show is pretty cheesy, the only one who can really act properly is Seung-gi (and the other mystical vet guy), but then it's probably what the producer intended! Somehow amongst all the dramatic pauses, the fart jokes, a strange obsession with cows and strange minor characters it seems to work and all come together well. If you can get past all that it's a good show worth watching.

This is by far the best tv series in the world as romantic comedy and I am not a fan of rom-coms. Those who managed to finish this series are not disappointed for sure but if you just leave it in the first 5 episodes you loose pretty much your humanity. It includes very much fun and every hurtfull moment is well chosen in the storyline. I have never cried in any movie or tv series or even at my father's funeral yet the final episode made me cry like a baby..

This stupid kid romance gain popularity by marketing.
Typical overacting kids, overcliched beaten to death and insulting your brain over and over again. The same level stupidity with kadarshian reality show or maria mercedes etc.
There's many other k-dramas are better than this crap. Unless you've already watched the other 100-150, you'd better pass this one.

"My girlfriend is a Gumiho" is a popular South Korean romantic-comedy- mythological drama series that involved the story of a gumiho or a nine tailed fox whose desire is to live human life and an ambitious actor guy who incidentally met her. And it's a worth-watching melodrama series. Initially my sassy girl-crush Jun Ji Hyun turned down the role of heroine gumiho- that's great because it's destined to be Shin-Min-Ah's show I think. She was very cute, natural, and lovely as a gumiho, also a real fashionista- most of the times her simple dress-up suited her perfectly. The chemistry between her and the talented hero Lee Sung- Gi ( as Cha-Tae-Woong) was adorable too bringing both emotional and funny scenes. Yes, many times the drama was so funny that I laughed a lot and felt that it's one of the best drama series I had watched so far. A lot of passers-by and random characters focused by camera also added more natural flavor. The soundtracks specially the theme song were awesome and natural acting of other side characters- half human Dong-Ju ( thumbs up for No Min Woo! ) , Woong's aunt and grandfather , director and villain-like Hye-In brought fun and suspense. So although in the ending episodes it became a bit cliché and a little more story development and care for side characters would be much better, overall it's a lovely-enjoyable drama.
However, 500+ years old gumiho obviously reminded me of 400+ years old alien Do Min Joon (Kim Soo Hyun) from my previously watched outstanding series "My Love from the Star". Gumiho heroine looked too naive where alien hero looked cool and wise but undoubtedly the both were so adorable at so many times. So why all these cute and lovely supernatural creatures from fictions come to Korea only can be a topic of good thoughts! :p :)

"My Girlfriend is a Gumiho" is known for its lighthearted and comedic moments, blending fantasy with romance. The show explores themes of love, sacrifice, and the challenges of maintaining a relationship under unusual circumstances. The chemistry between the two leads, played by Lee Seung-gi and Shin Min-ah, adds depth to the story. The drama combines humor, drama, and fantasy elements, making it an engaging and enjoyable watch for those who enjoy romantic comedies with a supernatural twist. The story revolves around a college student named Cha Dae-woong who accidentally frees a gumiho named Mi-ho from a painting where she was trapped for 500 years. In exchange for saving his life, Mi-ho must consume his life force. To avoid this, they strike a deal to help her become human. As they spend time together, they develop a unique and heartwarming relationship.

I love Shin Mina. But this drama is a pain to watch. However much I wanted to complete watching this drama, I am struggling to finish all the episodes and after many months, am still struggling at 9 episodes. It's a childish romance and the leads have no chemistry with each other at all. Story line is void of excitement or heartfelt romance and the male lead does not deserve Gumiho's love. I don't know why I am still not giving up the show except to want to know whether Gumiho will die in the end or live. Best not to start on this show as there are tons of better kdramas you can pick from.

Another home run for the fantastic work of Lee Seung Gi and also Shin Min Ha. In fact, the entire cast did a great job! So many memorable moments, but Seung Gi was the magic flame. The plot was intriguing, novel, compelling & mysterious. All of the characters provided humor, wit, slap stick like comedy (passing wind in an elevator - is that sexy?). A roller coaster of a plot, maybe more like a Haunted House. There are so many memorable moments: Boar hunting, Dramatic Rescues, Meat, collecting boxtops, evil girlfriend, Chilly but Gorgeous Scary Vet, ...
Please watch this drama! You will not be disappointed. Pathos, comedy, scary tall villian with a hidden agenda, girlfriend from Hell, Director who searches for real action, ... Auntie & Grandpa. How could they live in that environment and not fall in love.
Watch it on Viki, as well.

The story isn't new, especially for a korean drama. But that doesn't bring down the show one bit. Fabulous performances by both the leads, Shin min a is too damn cute and pretty and fresh throughout the show, never brings the show down and never annoys, which is a big plus in Kdramas, and I always loved lee seung gi, and knew he was a good actor, but damn he's quite good especially in the serious roles, and the last 2 episodes he really made me shed some tears, absolutely good.
Though the show could have been shorter, like 10-12 episodes were enough. But unlike other Kdramas you won't get bored in this stretch out, as it's cute and fun throughout the length. A 10 stars from me, because despite an ordinary story, the leads carried everything on their shoulders and did a fab job.

The good: The plot is not action packed, but has twists and turns and good character development to keep you engaged throughout. Lead actors are charismatic, cute and expressive.
The not so good: Production quality is not great, especially compared with more recent Korean dramas but it kinda adds to the charm of it in a way. It's ridiculous in it's humour sometimes (which is pretty funny mostly!) but never in a gross-out way. A few aspects of the story are left a bit underexplained/unresolved at the end but nothing major. If you need a cinematic masterpiece, probably not up your alley.
Highly recommend this drama if you're looking for something lighthearted and fun, with a little bit of fantasy and angst. I found it just an easy, light, wholesome watch and would do it again!

This drama is soooo cuteeeee and great ! I really enjoyed ! The cast is perfection omg !! Definitely a great drama to watch !!
I love this k-drama that I will cry even now because the story is so beautiful and I have a feeling that I can't explain like my heart beats faster when I watch even a short scene of them on Facebook and tiktok that is so beautiful and I don't get tired of watching it and I feels that I fell in love with Miho because of her acting so well in her role, I can't say anything because they are so good together, my heart is full of tears now, and I hope that they have their family now in their world, have a good life and never ending love of each other, and also this k-drama is in my heart now and I will never ever forget in ;) ;) ;)

An aspiring actor accidentally releases a gumiho (9 tailed fox) in human form, who after saving his life has to stay with him. This is a very entertaining romantic drama with the best comedy moments coming from a director and the actors auntie. The script is very well paced and acting is excellent from all the cast particularly Shin Min-a who is totally enchanting.
