          Slapstick Comedy 101

A great stepping stone for Punjabi Movie Industry. With Carry On Jatta Punjabi Industry will prove that we can now handle situational comedies as well and that we have something that neither Bollywood nor Hollywood has. I'm talking about one-on-one comedy talent. Read on…

Carry On Jatta has the kind of one-on-one comedy which I have never seen before in any other Punjabi or Hindi Movie. The kind of wit battles they have are very unique. While in other movies you get to see one single pair performing this type of comedy (The Trip and The Odd Couple for example), CARRY ON JATTA has multiple comedy artists witting each other in multiple scenes. Here are some of the one-on-one combos in CARRY ON JATTA: Bhalla vs Ghuggi, Bhalla vs. Binnu, Bhalla Vs. Gippy, Binnu vs Ghuggi, Ghuggi vs Gippy, BN Sharma vs. Ghuggi, Ghuggi Vs. Binnu etc. The dialogs are mostly improvised and you can make out the brilliant performances of these proved comedians. This alone is a hardcore factor for anyone to watch this film. Every single one of these scenes is a masterpiece. I have never seen so much comedy talent at one single place before.

There might be one objection coming from the audience, that being that the film tends to get slow at times. For example the beginning of the movie might seem slow for most part and many might object that the climax is terribly dragged. But after you have seen the movie, you can easily deduce that this happens because the comic part is very fast. When the comedy starts and situations are built, the film moves at a very fast pace and you laugh continuously for minutes at length. Due to these much paced scenes, the rest of the movie seems quite slow.

The climax of the movie is a very well crafted ploy, but it is stretched. The whole idea of such a brilliant chase is mind blowing. The whole theater was literally jumping of out their seats with laughter. I have never seen so much craziness in the theater. But it gets too long. You keep laughing and laughing and laughing and it doesn't end. Extreme laughter for a long duration and that's my complaint. It's really hard to laugh that long and If it was a bit short, it would have been perfect.

Acting wise everyone is awesome. Not a single complaint there. Even the stock characters played their part well, be it the Sarpach and his son or even the Motta Naukar.

Gippy Grewal has acted well and you can observe him giving his 200% to his character. Some of his scenes are hilarious, especially his visual comedy in the scene where he goes to Khushboo Grewal thinking of her as his wife. Gippy and Ghuggi had a great chemistry as well and their scenes at the "Bhatha" are brilliant. Ghuggi and his shy gestures are at full swing and some of his dialogs will make you laugh forever. However the casting of Khushboo against Ghuggi didn't seem fit. They made an odd pair. I wonder how it would have turned out if they had exchanged Binnu Dhillon's role with Gurpreet Ghuggi's. :D

The most awesome performance comes from Jaswinder Bhalla and his slapstick comedy. JUST PLAIN BRILLIANT. A much deserved role and act on his part. Binnu supported him well and two of them made a great team. Binnu has done a major comic role here and the scene of "Ghoddi" are genius.

BN Sharma did some really good comedy, especially at the climax it was just pushing me out of my seat with laughter. He really deserves to play a bigger role now. Another sufficient act is done by Karamjot Anmol. He has a small role, but as always he wins your heart. Rana Ranbir has a very brief role, but his act this time is very timely and very suggestive. His play with his father's name is very funny.

Mahi Gill did her part well, but it will come as a surprise that the film is not devoted to her solely. The film does pure justice to the comic element by concentrating on one on one comedy and makes full use of the talent of Jaswinder Bhalla, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Binnu Dhillon, BN Sharma and Karamjit Anmol.

I also want to appreciate the cinematography of the movie. Considering that the 90% of the film has been shot at single location and most of that is in interior, the camera work doesn't bore you. Every scene has a fresh appeal and a lot of credit goes to lighting as well.

CARRY ON JATTA is a new type of comedy for Punjabi movie Industry. This type of film has never been made before in Punjab and Smeep Kang has captured it well. It's not easy to manage a film like this but it has been done like a pro. Lots of appreciations for the director.

In the end I would say it's a great movie and great follow up after the success of Jatt & Juliet. The film will be successful for sure and will reassure the trust of audience into Punjabi Movies. Oh what a wonderful time for Punjabi Cinema! Two awesome movies one after another and CARRY ON JATTA introduced a new sub-genre of comedy movies.

Carry On Gippy and Carry on Smeep Kang…. you keep carrying on Punjabi Cinema forward… and Punjabiportal will keep carrying on you :D

          Kang's best effort till now

Sumeep Kang directed one film before this (Chakk de Phatte) and has done three more since. But 'Carry on Jatta' remains, by far, his best work to date. Witty dialogues, great comic timing from a cast of Kang regulars, and a story line that retains its silliness till the end makes for a couple of hours of good laughter. In his later films (Lucky di Unlucky Story, Bhaji in Problem, Double di Trouble) Kang allowed the screeching and mayhem to get somewhat out of hand, but this remains the gold standard for the mistaken identities plots that Kang seems to specialise in. If he tops this one in the future, that will be one heck of a funny film....

          Awesome Dialogs in Punjabi

It was sheer fun. Purely made for Punjabi comedy loving audience.

If you are one who loves sarcastic, funny and taunting dialogs then CARRY ON JATTA will not let you move away once you start watching it.

Although there are excess songs in the movie but waiting for the song to end is worth it. Sudden delivery of dialogs cover the lapses in story of the movie which appears to be non-realistic and has been experimented in many movies already.

Its been a couple of days since I watched the movie first time and I am definitely going to watch it again this weekend (skipping the songs with fast forward:-) )

True Punjabi wit... of Punjabis, by Punjabis, for Punjabis

Carry On Jatta will be a milestone in Punjabi movie industry. And this claim is not without reason. This movie is in the league of Andaz Apna Apna and Hera Pheri from Bollywood. There are many reasons why this movie is destined to become a cult classic. One, it is not a slapstick comedy; this is intelligent comedy, fraught with witty dialogues. This makes me think how humorous Punjabis naturally are and it reflects in our daily conversation. The movie makes excellent use of the common utterances and transforms them into brilliant lines that will surely make your stomach ache with laughter. Two, the performances given by the actors are plain superlative. Gurpreet Ghuggi is so talented that it's unfortunate that he is not utilized much by the filmmakers. Gippy Grewal does justice to his part, we don't expect him to be Tom Hanks anyway. But the movie's USP is the chemistry between Jaswinder Bhalla and Binnu Dhillon. Binnu Dhillon is the show stealer here. His comic timing is one of the best I have seen (I have seen lots and lots of movies, Hollywood and Bollywood). Jaswinder Bhalla is par excellence. I know he has the gift of repartee and he truly shines in the acting arena as well. B.N. Sharma has a cameo but gives you an overdose of laughter with his funny dialogue delivery. Three, the characters are drawn impeccably. Each character adds to the flavor (SPOLIER: Even an insignificant character called Sarpanch has memorable lines). I generally don't see Punjabi movies (same clichéd stories) but this one is the best to have come from Punjabi cinema in a long time (perhaps Mahual Theek Hai was the last such movie). These guys have put brains in writing the movie. There are no set pieces but rather quick wit takes the helm. If you are Punjabi and you get the hang of rustic dialect, do not miss it. It reminds you of the love your heart carries for your mother tongue. 10/10 for a brilliant effort.

          Delightful Screwball Comedy

Sometimes ... we want to Just Have Fun.

"Carry On Jatta" is happy to leave 'solving the problems of the universe' to other movies.

This deceptively simple but extremely effective comedy transcends all barriers of time, or language, or culture, because its humour turns on basic quirks and basic relationships fundamental to the entire human race and thus immediately accessible. Young men will fall in love. Fathers and sons will misunderstand each other. Friends will try to 'help' but inadvertently make things worse.

Mix all these elements together with classic comic timing and perfect plotting under the deft hand of Punjabi director Smeep Kang ("Chakk De Phatte") and the result is ... very VERY funny!

Two lifelong friends – Jas (Gippy Grewal) and Honey (Gurpreet Ghuggi) – eagerly support each other through thick and thin and are basically good guys, despite being disregarded by their respective families. Jas lives with his father, a successful lawyer (Jaswinder Bhalla), and his older brother Goldy (Binnu Dhillon) and sister-in-law Diljeet (Anshu Sahni), while Honey is perennially chastised by his father, a police inspector (B. N. Sharma), for having no goals or ambitions in life. But this is not quite true. Honey has one ambition: his lovely girlfriend Preet (Khushboo Grewal). The lives of everyone, however, get turned topsy-turvy when Jas also falls in love, with the newly met but lovely Mahie (Mahie Gill). Jas and Honey will need all their ingenuity – and luck! – to outfox their families and achieve their objectives.

          Sounds so simple, doesn't it?

Yet in the right hands even 'the obvious' can be much cleverer than it appears.

This 2012 Punjabi movie "Carry On Jatta" is one of those truly rare comedies that succeeds, not through attempting surprise twists (that rarely surprise, anyway), but by putting its business right up there in open plain sight for the audience ... and then skillfully playing on the audience's anticipation for everything that follows.

This is VERY hard to do and do well. But "Carry On Jatta" succeeds – largely through the impeccable comic timing and talents of its ensemble cast.

Special credit to the two leads – Gippy Grewal (who even sang all his own songs) and Gurpreet Ghuggi (nice to see him in a bigger romantic role) – whose mutual comic chemistry went far to carry all this off so effectively. But the supporting performances by Jaswinder Bhalla and Binnu Dhillon as Jas' father and brother, respectively, were so delicious they almost steal the whole show.

          There's this bit with a ladder ... ! ;-)

One minor quibble: it would have been nice to see the two heroines – Mahie Gill and Khushboo Grewal, who were both quite good – given more to do. Also, when the 'sins' of Jas and Honey finally come home to roost, the pacing of the denouement could have been slightly tighter.

But these are minor quibbles indeed, for a movie that otherwise manages to be so damn funny. Even the music by Jatinder Shah contributed to the delightful madness. The title track, "Carry On Jatta", is introduced over the opening credits and its theme reappears at such perfectly timed moments throughout the rest of the film that, long before the end, even just the reintroduction of that musical theme is enough to set the audience howling with laughter again.

          Silly?

          Yes, but such fun.

I describe this 2012 Punjabi film "Carry On Jatta" as a 'screwball comedy' because I think this movie shares its comic heart with great old Hollywood classic screwball comedies from the 1930s – like "The Awful Truth" (1937) or "My Favorite Wife" (1940). This film plays on the timeless element of brilliant witty farce that dates back through human history all the way back to Greco-Roman times, like "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum" (1966, that lifted much of its material verbatim from the ancient Roman comic playwright Plautus).

Times change. Civilisations change. But no matter what, no matter when, human beings still need a good laugh!
