Netflix Sets Release Date for ‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 3, Drops First Teaser Trailer
Image
Netflix is heading back to the Borderland. The streamer revealed Tuesday that it has set a Sept. 25 launch for the third season of the Japanese live-action hit Alice in Borderland, while also unveiling the first teaser trailer, giving fans a glimpse at the high-stakes survival drama’s next twisted round.

Directed once again by Shinsuke Sato and based on Haro Aso’s cult manga of the same name, the new season continues the story of Arisu and Usagi as they’re drawn back into the perilous limbo world known as the Borderland — a twisted realm that blurs the boundaries between life and death. The show has become one of Netflix’s top-performing Japanese originals, with season two debuting at No. 1 on the streamer’s Global Top 10 list for non-English-language TV upon launch in 2022.

Returning stars Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya reprise their roles as Arisu and Usagi, now living a...

This Surprising Trend Is Giving Netflix Users Some of the Best Shows of All Time (& It's not Even Close)

Quick LinksBritish Dramas Lead The Pack On NetflixBritain Has Dominated Netflix's Reality Television

There are many streaming services available for audiences to consume, but Netflix remains the most successful. The streaming giant has provided several of the internet's biggest hits, like Stranger Things and Wednesday. Netflix's big-budget productions bring Hollywood production values to the small screen, ensuring viewers do not need to pop into theaters to witness cinematic spectacles. Although its prices have risen, it is showing no signs of slowing down, continuing to pump out an impressive amount of content. However, the most engaging releases on Netflix are not glossy U.S. productions, but rather the imports from other countries. Korean shows like Squid Game and Legends Of The Blue Sea have garnered big fan followings, while programs from Japan like Alice In Borderland and House Of Ninjas have sparked plenty of discussion. The jewel in the crown...

42% of Gen Z watches anime weekly. Streaming services are taking note.
Image
As streaming services like Netflix approach peak saturation in anchor regions like the United States, they must look to younger generations to find new customers. To win over Gen Z, streamers can appeal to fans of a particular genre: Japanese anime. Shows like Naruto (pictured above) and My Hero Academia now rank among the most-watched programs on SVOD platforms, and viewers under the age of 30 are a big reason why.

Tvrev used data from Parrot Analytics to explore the streaming prowess of anime. According to Parrot, Naruto is the most in-demand Japanese-language series on Netflix and Hulu in the U.S. My Hero Academia ranks highest on the same measurement for Amazon Prime Video, though it too is available on Netflix and Hulu.

Parrot also claims that those licensed anime series are hauling in massive amounts of revenue for their host platforms by retaining subscribers. Naruto is reportedly worth $21 million across Netflix and Hulu,...

‘We Were Kings’ Netflix Review: Mexican Show About Crime & Forbidden Love Is Boring
Image
Netflix’s 2024 batch of family crime dramas have been quite the test of patience. Things started off pretty rocky with Fool Me Once, which featured rich people doing murderous things (I watched it in January and I don’t remember the details). That was followed by The Brothers Sun, which was packed with some of the most enjoyable stunts and a lot of heartwrenching mother-son drama. The streaming platform lulled me into a sense of comfort with the equally amazing House of Ninjas, which was about, you guessed it, a family full of Shinobi facing a deadly threat. Then, things started to go off the rails. Eric was all over the place. Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper established some sort of stability. But the triple-punch delivered by The Accident, The Perfect Couple, and Blood Legacy demolished the genre’s reputation. And, while I thought they were done with this nonsense, now...

‘The Accident’ Netflix Review: One Of The Worst Shows Of The Year
Image
The Netflix model is beyond my comprehension. They make a lot of good shows that don’t get renewed. They make a lot of bad stuff that gets renewed. And they release a bunch of big-budget, middling shows and then forget to market them. If we talk about this year alone, Netflix released 3 Body Problem and Supacell, both of which weren’t all that good, and they have got the greenlight for multiple seasons. Two of the best action dramas of the year, The Brothers Sun and House of Ninjas, have probably been canceled. I don’t know if anybody even knows that amazing shows like Nightmares and Daydreams, Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, and Tokyo Swindlers exist on the streaming platform. But the horribly made Heeramandi and Maamla Legal Hai had the viewership that’s necessary to get the thumbs up. I don’t even want to get into the animated stuff.

Why David Shin’s Disney+ Crime Thriller ‘House of the Owl’ Is a Test Run for Hollywood-Style Recurring Series Made in Japan
Image
While multiple Korean TV series have connected with global audiences, Japan’s production committees, terrestrial broadcasters and talent agencies have kept their TV industry tightly focused on a local market.

Anime and variety have long remained the Japanese TV industry’s best-known exports, while the premium end of the spectrum has largely escaped Japanese producers. That is despite multinational shows like Hulu’s “Shogun,” HBO’s “Tokyo Vice” and Netflix’s “House of Ninjas” underscoring the potentially substantial overseas interest in Japan-set live-action drama.

“House of the Owl,” set to begin airing on Disney+ and Hulu from next week, is both an outlier and a potential mold breaker.

A crime thriller about a behind-the-scenes political fixer and his chafing rivalry with his son, “House of the Owl” was conceived as a five-season ride along the lines of “House of Cards” or “Succession.” But overcoming the obstacles on the way to...

How Lego Series ‘Ninjago: Dragons Rising’ Breathed Fire Into the 13-Year-Old Franchise
Image
Ninjas have never been out of vogue but between last year’s Turtles animated feature “Mutant Mayhem” and the recently-released Netflix series “House of Ninjas,” it’s fair to say they’re having a moment.

Not that your average “Ninjago” fan (average age 6-8) would care about whether or not ninjas are in vogue. Since launching simultaneously as a show and product 13 years ago, the Lego-originated IP has spawned 16 seasons, 235 episodes, a 2017 feature film starring Jackie Chan, theme park attractions and, of course, plenty of toys.

In 2023 “Ninjago” was semi-rebooted under a fresh title “Ninjago: Dragons Rising,” which introduced new characters and story arcs. In part the change came about because the “Ninjago” universe was so vast there was no easy access point for a new generation of kids. “There’s so much material, it’s our longest running show,” says Asa Tait, head of production at Lego’s...

Dave Boyle on How Netflix Hit ‘House of Ninjas’ Ducked Genre Stereotypes and Deflected Cultural Appropriation
Image
In these culturally sensitive times, having an American director and showrunner on a quintessentially Japanese series is sure to raise the issue of cultural appropriation. But the Dave Boyle-directed “House of Ninjas,” which Netflix launched in February, stands out not only as a hit, but as a seemingly happy blend of East and West.

An original story about the last living ninja family in modern times, the show ranked as the streamer’s top non-English show in 16 countries and regions, as well as reached the Top 10 list in 92 countries.

In an interview with Variety, Boyle said that surprising career left-turns brought him to the series and helped him keep the show authentically Japanese.

At what stage did you join the project?

It all started with Kento Kaku, the star of the show, and his two comrades, Murao Yoshiaki and Imai Takafumi who started working on a ninja revival show.

Streaming Ratings: ‘Love Is Blind’ Scores With Season 6 Debut
Image
Netflix debuted the sixth season of Love Is Blind on Valentine’s Day, and the show captured a lot of viewers’ hearts — or at least their eyes.

The dating show easily led Nielsen’s original streaming series rankings for Feb. 12-18, drawing 907 million minutes of viewing time in the United States. It also finished third overall, behind library shows Bluey (1.17 billion minutes on Disney+) and Young Sheldon (1 billion on Netflix and Max). Those two swapped spots from the previous week.

Netflix’s romance One Day had 460 million minutes of watch time, a healthy 55 percent improvement over its opening. Apple TV+’s World War II drama Masters of the Air hit the rankings for the first time with 243 million minutes, with three fourths of that total coming from the episode that premiered Feb. 16.

Oppenheimer also had its streaming premiere on Peacock that week, leading the movies top 10 with 612 million minutes of watch time.

Hong Kong Filmart: 5 Trends to Track at the Market
Image
Hong Kong Filmart, Asia’s largest and longest-running content market, made a much-cheered return to physical form last year following a long, three-year absence throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2024, the emphasis will again be on regaining momentum, with organizer the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (Hktdc) expecting some 750 exhibitors from more than 25 countries, up about 7 percent from last year — but still down from the 888 exhibitors from 35 territories that attended in 2019. Buyers and sellers will also be hoping to ride the tailwind of Berlin’s European Film Market, which saw record attendance and a resurgence of indie dealmaking just three weeks ago.

Asia’s top sales agents typically hold back key titles from Berlin, or wait to close deals on their home turf at Filmart. Strong contingents from North America and Europe are making the trip to Hong Kong this year to buy and sell into and out of the region.

House of Ninjas Biggest Unanswered Questions
Image
The following contains spoilers for House of Ninjas Season 1, now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix's House of Ninjas initially appears to have a very simple plot. The Tawara shinobi clan must come out of retirement to stop the Gentenkai, an evil ninja cult hellbent on taking over Japan.

Unfortunately, the Tawaras' long-lost son, Gaku, has defected to the enemy, assisting their leader, the Fuma Kotaro, in the domination plan. However, House of Ninjas proceeds to incorporate an assortment of characters into its narrative that creates a series of winding, intersecting arcs. This leads to some plot holes and unanswered questions arising by the time Season 1 ends.

Why Didn't the Police Interrogate Nagi at School?

The police have no idea who the Tawaras are. But they find clues of a shinobi stealing and returning relics from museums. They track down Nagi, the high-schooler in the family, eager to press her about her nighttime hobbies.

‘Ninja Kamui’ Episode 3 Recap And Ending Explained: What Is Auza?

Adult Swim’s new action-revenge anime Ninja Kamui has already garnered a blooming fan following, getting identified as one of the best anime of 2024. I think even I am already hooked on this series, as it airs every week. Audiences who enjoy gore in anime might even love this anime. I suppose that with Netflix’s House of Ninjas, which came out quite recently, and then Ninja Kamui, there has been an increase in demand for the shinobi genre. Personally, I have been a fan since I watched Naruto in 7th grade, and watching Ninja Kamui is quite a treat for people who love this fandom.

Quick Links House of Ninjas' Gaku, Explained House of Ninjas Resurrects Gaku With Sinister Intent House of Ninjas' Gaku Takes Over the Fuma

The following contains spoilers for House of Ninjas Season 1, now streaming on Netflix.

House of Ninjas creates a very thought-provoking story that transcends the initial hook of a family filled with shinobi, moving towards what has been seen in shows like Naruto. It has a deep sociopolitical element to it, focusing on what makes the Tawaras click, if they have chosen the right destinies as government agents, and if they are missing the key ingredient at home after retiring: love.

A lot of it is kickstarted in the first episode when Soichi and Yoko take their family on a mission on an ocean tanker to rescue a politician named Mukai. Unfortunately, disaster strikes that results in one of their own being killed. This predicates the trauma and...

But now it’s 2024, and ninjas… don’t really exist — except in House of Ninjas, the new spy thriller from writer-director Dave Boyle (Man from Reno) starring Kento Kaku, Yosuke Eguchi, and Tae Kimura. The series imagines a world in which ninja clans are alive and well — except they’re (mostly) retired. So when an evil clan threatens Japan, a family of former ninjas covertly comes out of retirement to foil the plot… and kick ass and take names.

Why Netflix’s House of Ninjas Doesn’t Like to Say “Ninja”
Image
“Only ignorant fools say ‘ninja.’” So claims Taki, the mysterious matron of the Tawara family, as she sternly corrects her grandson in the old ways. Played by veteran actress Nobuko Miyamoto, there’s much more to Grandma Taki than meets the eye. Such is the way of the world in Netflix’s new series, House of Ninjas. The proper term is “shinobi.” It’s what was used historically.

House of Ninjas is a new action dramedy that follows a modern-day shinobi family who has forsaken the lethal trade of their ancestors for a “normal” life. And like in every dramedy, the Tawaras are comically and tragically dysfunctional. The family patriarch, Soichi (Yosuke Eguchi) struggles to maintain a low-key profile whilst his wife Yoko (Tae Kimura) and daughter Nagi (Aju Makita) succumb to their old devious habits, stealing stuff just for the rush. Their thievery goes from grocery store shoplifting to museum art object theft.

‘Love Village’ and ‘Last One Standing’ Add New Seasons as Romance, Comedy and Fantasy Lead Netflix’s Japanese Live-Action Slate
Image
Reality TV series “Love Village” will add a second season and comedy talk show “Last One Standing” will add a third as part of Netflix’s 2024 live action offering. The slate, revealed on Thursday, is long on romance, comedy and fantasy.

Earlier this month, consultancy and research firm Media Partners Asia said that Netflix is the second most watched SVOD platform in Japan (behind Prime Video) and the third most-watched premium streamer (behind Tver and Prime Video). While re-runs boost other platforms “original dramas and variety have had clear acquisition impact for Netflix,” Media Partners Asia said in its latest report, and cited “Love Village” and “First Love” as leading examples.

“Last One Standing,” in which comedians must narrate stories that are both personal and funny or face elimination, hails from United Productions and comedy talent agency Yoshimoto Kogyo. A third season will be available in 2024, but is currently undated.

Netflix's New Martial Arts Show Continues A Great Genre Trend
Image
Netflix's House of Ninjas follows the trend of family-focused martial arts shows like Cobra Kai and The Brothers Sun, emphasizing the drama and relationships alongside the action. House of Ninjas explores the intersection between family bonds and professional obligations within the ninja world, promising complex fight choreography and fast-paced action scenes. Netflix has become the go-to platform for martial arts TV because of its focus on family-driven dramas, while other networks like Paramount+ and Max prioritize action elements over family drama.

Netflix's upcoming martial arts drama, House of Ninjas, looks to continue a positive genre trend that other critical successes in the genre like Cobra Kai and The Brothers Sun have established. While many movies reinvented the martial arts genre, TV is enjoying a successful run of high-quality martial arts shows that are doing the same thing, which speaks to the genre's versatility. Among many things, the martial arts...
