Beautifully animated series that needed some more time

I will say that I was not familiar with this series before I started watching it. But I'm a sucker for any animated fantasy or sci-fishow that says it is HD Dolby Vision. Netflix, on the whole, usually makes sure that these animated series look top-notch. I point to Arcane as an example. Blue Eyed Samurai is another example. Both are beautifully animated show. The Dolby Vision really makes the show pop. So I don't understand all the other reviews that talked about frame rate and being unwatchable and such, because I've had absolutely no issues viewing this show. It looks fantastic on my OLED.

As for the show itself, I was not familiar with the books or the story before I started watching it. I will say, it feels like they've left some connective information out or assumed that the viewer should know certain things. I don't believe the show is developed enough story wise for somebody who is not a book reader to completely understand the nuances of the show. It also seems like there is a lot of material that they are trying to cover in eight episodes. Eight episodes might have been sufficient if the episodes were an hour each. But at 30 minutes, it feels like they're leaving out some crucial plot points and background information.

That being said, I am enjoying the show. The voice acting is good and I would definitely watch a season two if the show does well enough to earn one from Netflix.

Another great animation from Netflix!

To start Netflix has shown us that they are perfectly capable of making entertaining, and high-quality kids television shows. I stumbled across Wolf King because every now and then I do like to check the coming to Netflix page. After watching a trailer I began to feel excited. Similar to the cadets show of 2023 It's always the under advertise shows that Netflix produces that are always the best.

I decided to start episode one as something to put on in the background. I was quickly drawn in by the very colorful, storytelling and beautiful animation. The story also adds to the wow factor of the show we've seen fantasy over and over again But I think that the wolf king does it right, especially for the main audience. It is supposed to be targeting, which is children. Parents can trust this show not to throw anything in their child's face that they wouldn't otherwise want their children, seeing unlike the dragon prince which was a phenomenal show, regardless of intended audience.

Needless to say, I ended up finishing The show completely in one sitting, and I would recommend this show for both audiences and adult audiences.

Shallow, rushed, and too kiddie

I was really hoping for a show about werewolves with an intriguing story and feral fight scenes. But instead, they made it much too kiddie. Which is a very strange choice for the subject material, people turning into savage beasts and fighting for dominance.

I didn't expect a mature series for teens to adults, but this felt very neutered.

To such a point where a werelord will attack someone and there will be no blood, no scratch, not even a tear in the clothing?? I'm not asking for brutality, but you can show some damage.

The plot felt very rushed, and I barley got to know the characters. At one point characters are crying for fear of losing another, but it felt like they spent a day together.

The plot and characters are archetypes I've seen many times over, and they didn't do much special with them.

The things I did like. I thought the animation was visually appealing. Although, the low frame rate can be a little off putting at times.

The idea of the characters are good. I liked the supporting characters, good to see some strong female characters. I liked how the more lady-like one could still pack a punch when needed. The world building has a lot of potential.

I've never heard of or read the books, but werewolves are right up my alley. But once again, werewolves get screwed over.

It's sadly just ok. I'm sure families will enjoy it, but anyone else will find it quite underwhelming.

Beautiful art, unbelievably dumb characters

The art is beautiful, and that beauty is what carried me through to the end of the season.

The plot, at a very high level has all the basics, and an interesting premise. But when going through the scenes, *all* of the main characters are unbelievably stupid. Worse, they're just sketches of characters. We don't get to actually know or really understand anyone. We don't even find out a key "were" aspect of one of them until the 2nd to last episode... and we don't find out why some that should have powers don't..

There are hints of intrigue that stop early and go nowhere, or mean absolutely nothing.

If the writing was an attempt to make it accessible to younger audiences... what we got was a jumble of half-starts and shallow excuses for random hand-to-hand fight scenes. I don't know if it was the writers or the producers that screwed this up; but I'm left with naught but disappointment and sadness for the animators.

My family won't be getting exposed to season 2, just in case the stupid is catching.

Thrilling and Exciting

"Wolf King" is a stunning work of animated brilliance that captivates from the very first frame and leaves an indelible mark on the heart long after the credits roll. This series is an emotional rollercoaster, visually breathtaking, and narratively profound, pushing the boundaries of what animated storytelling can achieve.

From the outset, the world-building in Wolf King is nothing short of magnificent. Set in a richly imagined, sprawling fantasy world where anthropomorphic animals hold dominion over ancient landscapes, the show creates a vivid universe filled with lush forests, towering mountains, and sprawling cities that seem alive with history and mystery. Each environment is meticulously crafted, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the intricacies of the design. The animation quality itself is a testament to the dedication and creativity of the team behind the show. The fluid motion, highly detailed character designs, and breathtaking backgrounds immerse you in a world where every frame feels like a work of art.

The heart of Wolf King lies in its characters, particularly the titular character, King Fenris. A complex, multi-dimensional leader, Fenris is not just a typical "hero" but a deeply flawed, vulnerable, and often conflicted ruler who struggles with the weight of his decisions. The character development throughout the series is both intricate and authentic, allowing viewers to witness Fenris's growth as a leader, a friend, and a father. His evolution is portrayed in a way that resonates on an emotional level, reminding us that leadership often comes with immense sacrifice and personal turmoil.

Supporting characters are equally well-developed, each with their own rich backstory and emotional depth. From the fierce and loyal warriors who serve under King Fenris to the morally ambiguous figures who challenge his rule, every character has a purpose, and their arcs feel both organic and impactful. It's rare to find such a strong ensemble cast in an animated series, but Wolf King succeeds in making each character integral to the overarching narrative while also giving them individual moments of brilliance.

The storyline in Wolf King is another triumph, blending epic fantasy elements with deeply personal narratives. The show tackles themes of power, responsibility, betrayal, loyalty, and sacrifice in ways that are thought-provoking yet accessible. The political intrigue that runs throughout the series is engaging without being overwhelming, and the personal drama between characters is handled with nuance and respect. The dialogue is sharp, clever, and full of emotional weight, making each conversation feel like it matters. There are moments of humor to lighten the tension, but the show never shies away from its darker, more emotional beats. It's a series that makes you think, feel, and invest in the fates of its characters.

One of the standout features of Wolf King is its music and sound design. The score is sweeping, emotional, and perfectly attuned to the tone of the show. From the hauntingly beautiful melodies that accompany the quiet moments of introspection to the powerful, heart-pounding themes that play during battle scenes, the music elevates the narrative in a way few animated series manage to achieve. The sound design, too, is impeccable, with every rustling leaf, crackling fire, and clash of steel adding to the immersion.

What makes Wolf King so remarkable is its ability to blend spectacle with substance. The animation is not just a visual treat; it serves the story. Action sequences are intense and well-choreographed, but they never overshadow the emotional stakes of the series. Each battle, each confrontation, carries weight because it is tied to the characters' motivations and struggles. The show balances moments of grand action with quieter, more intimate scenes, allowing for a rich and varied viewing experience.

At its core, Wolf King is about the complexities of leadership and the cost of power. It explores what it means to be a ruler, the burden of making difficult choices, and the toll that these decisions take on the heart and mind. It's a meditation on sacrifice, loyalty, and the weight of responsibility-universal themes that transcend the fantasy setting.

In conclusion, Wolf King is a masterpiece of animated storytelling. With its breathtaking animation, intricate world-building, deep character development, and compelling narrative, it sets a new standard for what animated series can achieve. It's a show that doesn't just entertain but also challenges its audience to think, reflect, and feel. Whether you're a fan of fantasy, drama, or animation in general, Wolf King is a must-watch series that will leave you eagerly awaiting each new episode. It is, without a doubt, one of the best animated shows to come out in recent years, and it deserves a place in the pantheon of animated greatness.

Highly recommend it!

A growling great time!

A really solid story and great animation offering from Netflix. I have not read the books and have no idea how the show compares, but it makes me curious to read them.

I see a few complaints about the animation style and the story development! I understand both complaints but I have to disagree... you can't always have every detail in a story. Though I would have like to have seen a little more relationship development between the lead character and his group of friends. The time period of the show seems as if it takes place over a couple of weeks but there is a couple statements that makes you think it is a much longer period. Those inconsistencies could have been avoided. But I don't need every detail of his origins.

I completely disagree with the complaints about animation. It was a choice and it works. The target audience is young people. Like early teens maybe... so the animation style is almost nostalgic for children's books and shows, yet of a quality lending itself to quality art.

Bottom line is, it's worth the watch whether you are 12 or 52!

Nostalgia mixed with concern

As stated in each episode, this show was inspired by the book series, authored by Curtis Jobling. I read them around 4 times growing up, and to be completely honest I was incredibly hesitant to watch any adaptations. Was I wrong to think this? Not entirely. With Jobling as head writer, his strokes are present in the limited space of 8 episodes. And it's clear that his vision was mostly translated to the screen, which is frankly phenomenal when it comes to adapting epic fantasy. However that being said I feel that the frame rate of animation lets things down. I wasn't as impressed by the beast forms of some of the characters (Lucas I'm looking at you) as I should've been. Although saying that I will stand by the beautiful human forms, backgrounds and worldbuilding brilliantly communicated through the animation. Overall I give this show a 9/10 in part to hope for a season 2, so that the show can build off and really delve into the world of Lyssia and in turn Bast.

First EVER review...Wolf King was so good, I had to come leave one.

I've never written a review before, as I've never understood that if I as a consumer liked something, in order to receive more of said content, you have to let the creators and others know how amazing it is. My husband, our TWO year old, and I, were captivated by this series immediately. We sat down, started it, and didn't get back up until episode eight was over. We were on the edge of our seats the entire time, even my toddler wouldn't take her eyes off the show. We were all enthralled. It's beautifully animated, the plot moves swiftly and never leaves you hanging. You'll bond with some characters, and loathe others. You'll eat up every last crumb of this series and you'll still be hungry for more. Please give Wolf King a chance, you'll be more than glad you did!

Flaw with Animation

Animation frame rate is like 10 to 13 frames per second. It's so hard to watch. I want to watch it. But it's giving me headache. Feels like flashes of photos. Pacing is ok. Fast pace. I could only watch with lots of effort for about 20 minutes of first episode.

The colours seem to be good quality. Dialogues and music looks acceptable.

They should use a software to create extra frames and release a smoother version for people who struggle to see the original one.

Lots of people are talking about the novel. And that it's a great story. Shame it's let down by silly frame rate of animation. Hinest review.

The most recent, newest, and best series ever created

The Wolf King is one of the newest and most recent series created by Netflix, which is based on the book. Set in a vast world of fantasy, adventure, and fiction, richly imagined, where anthropomorphic animals fight and dominate ancient landscapes. This is the second series I know of that is based on a book where we can see the development of the story in person and the adventures of the main characters that make it up. It deserves to continue for a second season or more. The only thing I hope is that they at least consider changing a little of the events and the final destiny of some characters in the book, such as Whitley's death or that Drew never got to be with Gretchen at the end.

Just as they did with other Netflix series such as Carmen Sandiego, Voltron the Legendary Defender.

Great show for our family!

It's hard to impress this (almost) 7 year old. We decided to give this a shot and we were hooked! With only 8 episodes, they wasted no time getting into the action. It kept a great pace, and it wasn't too fast where we couldn't follow or had to pause, back up, and play again. There were just a couple of plot holes here and there, but again, 8 short episodes are hard to condense so much story into. Netflix has really jumped into animation, I just hope when they pick up stories from book series or previous works, that they give it the proper time to work it well. We look forward for a season 2!!

Awesome show!

They did so well with the slight changes to make it family friendly and making things make sense! I liked how the characters portrayed almost exactly to what the characters in the book are like, making there be very few changes that are mostly in the plot and not the characters. Most of the storyline seems to follow the original book with some changes that overall does not change the main story. The only thing against the show is how short it is. It is not very long and each episode is only 20 minutes long. I feel like they could have added more or kept some from the original story to make the season so that it is longer than 8 episodes that are 20 minutes long each. Other than that, no complaints!

Good action fantasy

Based on the Weereworld book series by Curtis Jobling, Wolf King is about a werewolf boy in his quest to defeat the lion regime.

The worldbuilding is the strongest suite of this series. Much like the books it takes advantage of the many types of werebeasts of folklore and mythology across the world, even if they're not one to one comparisions. Though they largely function the same way, they all have peculiarities that make the individual "species" stand out.

The animation is a kind of painted CGI made to resemble paintings, and occasionally the show pivots to 2D especially in flashbacks.

Overall a solid recommendation.

Great story

Interesting story, great visuals.

Great for kids and adults. I'd watch it with my two boys (8 and 12), both were amused by story and visuals in all episodes.

Must admit, beautifully drawn characters od young boys and girls that are main characters in the series. At times tense and scary, but also fun and comical.

A beautiful beginning, strong chemistry, love and rivalry between two brothers that is broken by the death of their mother and the revelation of the secret of the main character Drew, which results in the loss of trust from both the father and the remaining brother.

Worth watching.

Amazing

Show is clearly developed with lovable characters and a interesting and capturing plot. All of the shows characters are Lovable whether your rooting for the bad guys or the good guys. Also the romance makes my heart warm is reminds of those little relationships that always happened throughout middle school. Plus theres a really good mix of characters throughout the shows with very different personalities which means there at least someone you can connect with in here. The plot is amazing. I don't wait to spoil it for you but this show kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for the reveal of what is going to happen. Please watch this show it's amazing and I really want it to get a season 2.

A Show Worth Your Time

I've written reviews before (mostly privately) but felt like Wolf King needed this attention as this is a story that can really shine if given time. I mainly review things on these five principles:

Characters: 8/10 Plot: 7/10 World-Building: 6/10 Pacing: 6/10 Animation: 8/10

With a sixth specific to this review,

Faithfulness: 4/10.

The characters in Wolf King are fun and enjoyable to watch, their relationships feel meaningful and they grow naturally as the story progresses. Our main character Drew is a classic farm boy cliche, he's rough around the edges and unaware of the politics of the world, but he's also endearing and intelligent which helps make him feel real. He's a werelord, which is admittedly a somewhat unclear thing to be due to the storytelling, who is struggling to control his newly awakened powers while finding his place in the world with his new companions: Gretchen and Hector. The ragtag group have some compelling dynamics and I even found the antagonist, Prince Lucas, to be engaging and at times even thought-provoking (although this is mostly due to subtext). The voice actors did an astounding job and whoever assembled the cast did fantastically.

The plot of Wolf King is fairly straight forward, Drew is the last of the werewolves and the rightful heir to the throne who must master his newfound abilities with the help of his friends to restore peace to Lyssia. Drew struggles throughout this first season to understand the responsibilities and inner workings of his birthright as he narrowly avoids threat after threat. This paired with the interesting and complex world of the Wolf King creates an enjoyable story with characters to root for and goals you hope are achieved. However, at times, it can feel rushed or unclear, since pacing and plot must work together if one is badly executed it can bring down the other. More of this will be discussed in my dissection of the pacing.

Now the world-building of Wolf King creates some issues for viewers, me included, as it's attempts to grapple and condense an entire novel's worth of exposition down into 20 minutes chunks is almost impossible to do. I believe the writers did a great job with what they could as an airtime of ~200 minutes is too short for a story like this to really solidify it's world-building. I think if the plot was rearranged to allow for more moments of exposition it could've sacrificed the quality of the plot or the characters which I don't agree with. When you're put between a rock and a hard place it's hard to do as well as Wolf King does but between a ridiculously short 8 episode runtime and a corporation as greedy as Netflix (who expects the next Stranger Things to happen without investing any time into projects that don't produce immediate success) I think the Wolf King did brilliantly. Most criticisms should be placed on the fact that Netflix didn't allow them a bigger budget for longer/more episodes.

Pacing and time limitations are my main issues with this story as the world-building suffered massively and it dragged the plot down. High fantasy is complex to get correct, especially when it comes to combining: character development, world-building, exposition and of course, the plot, in all under 3 hours. Wolf King is already battling an 8 episode runtime, which if not clear by my repeated re-mentioning, I am unhappy about. I think this story benefit massively from taking a deep breath and a step back, but unfortunately it's clear that wasn't allowed. To be able to fit an entire novel into a movie things must be cut, but when it comes to a series I expect time and care to be taken to thoroughly explain the world I'm watching. I again emphasise the effect Netflix's greed has on the stories of this generation as I don't believe this was an issue with the writers. They seem confident and capable in their fields and I would've loved to watch their version of the show without the heavy hand of Netflix cutting it down into the most streamlined version of the original.

Onto happier horizons, the animation and artstyle of Wolf King is stunning ! It's mesmerising to watch and eye candy like this is what makes me hopeful that Netflix still has some interesting projects up it's sleeve. An unfortunate problem with animation like this is it's enjoyability does depend on your television. I found when I watched it on my older TV (only ~6 years old) it stuttered and struggled to keep the framerate up making fight scenes appear choppy and poorly animated, but when I watched on my newer TV (~3 years old) it was very fluid and entertaining. While I think this should've been taken into account, I'm actually not sure how much a problem this could be as I've found some people bring this up in their review but others didn't. I thought it was relevant nonetheless but even if your TV has difficulty keeping up, the show is still absolutely worth it and don't let the threat of an occasional choppy scene stop you from watching this fun adventure.

Lastly, the faithfulness of Wolf King is debatable, of course it still has all our main characters: Drew, Hector, Gretchen, Whitley, Lucas etc. But a lot of the events covered are rewrites and reordered. In Wereworld: Rise of the Wolf (the original title Wolf King was published under) Drew spent time in Redmire (Hector's home, the show rewrites this as Brackenholme), Whitley is believed to be a boy (which the show does away with) and there's lengthy explanations on Werelords and their abilities (including why Hector doesn't shapeshift). Now obviously, as always, the book is better than the adaptation but that doesn't mean Wolf King doesn't have merit. It's a fun and unique show that kept me captivated and invested in the characters and plot, while it doesn't follow Wereworld: Rise of the Wolf exactly I don't believe it needed to as it stands on it's own two legs with confidence and delivers a show worth watching.

In conclusion Wolf King is a show you should be watching, it's riveting and enjoyable for most audiences (12+) and opens you up to the wonderful Werewold series that I cannot praise enough. Thank you for taking your time to read my review, I hope you found it helpful and I hope you enjoy Wolf King !!!

Unviewable

I'm not sure who made the decision to use this animation style with such a low frame rate, but it honestly feels like watching a still-life animation from the 1920s. It makes the entire show incredibly difficult to watch.

This isn't just my personal opinion, either. I've seen countless others express the same frustration with the animation. The jerky, stilted movement simply doesn't work in the context of modern animation. Animation, by its very nature, is meant to be fluid and dynamic, with smooth transitions that captivate the viewer. However, the decision to cut the frame rate so drastically makes the whole experience feel awkward and uncomfortable.

When you're watching a show, especially one that's supposed to be engaging, you expect a certain level of fluidity in the animation. Whether it's for action sequences, character interactions, or even just a simple walk cycle, smooth animation is a fundamental part of what makes the experience immersive. Unfortunately, this style just does the opposite. It creates a disconnect between the viewer and the content, and it takes away from the enjoyment of the story and characters.

I understand that art and animation can be experimental and that creators often want to try something different or break away from conventional styles. But when the result negatively impacts the viewer's ability to engage with the show, it becomes a problem. The idea of experimenting with lower frame rates in animation isn't inherently bad-many shows and films have played with this concept in ways that work. However, in this particular instance, it feels like the approach was executed without fully considering its impact on the viewer experience. The low frame rate doesn't bring anything beneficial to the table; instead, it just makes everything harder to watch and leaves the audience feeling disconnected.

The animation in its current form is jarring. It distracts from the story and undermines the emotional impact of the scenes. In moments where the characters should be moving fluidly, they appear stiff and unnatural, and this takes the viewer out of the experience entirely. It's not just a minor issue, either-it's a major flaw that detracts from the overall quality of the show. If the goal was to create a unique or artistic look, it's clear that the execution didn't land in a way that enhances the show. Instead, it becomes a hindrance.

This kind of animation style works in some contexts, especially in older or more retro-inspired media where that kind of aesthetic is intentional. But in a modern show, where the standard for animation has evolved and audiences have come to expect a certain level of quality, this approach feels outdated and out of place. It's distracting and off-putting, making it hard for viewers to focus on anything other than the awkward animation.

It's not just about my personal preference, either. Many others have voiced their displeasure with this animation style, and it's clear that this is a widespread issue. People want to enjoy the show, but the animation is actively preventing that from happening. It's not just about looking good-it's about creating a smooth, cohesive experience that allows the audience to get lost in the world the creators are building. Unfortunately, this style does the opposite and leaves viewers feeling frustrated.

Please, for future projects, consider the impact of your animation choices on the audience. Experimentation is great, but when it makes the show nearly unwatchable, it's time to rethink the approach. The goal should always be to create something that enhances the viewing experience, not detracts from it. This animation style, unfortunately, fails to do that, and it severely hampers the potential of the show.
