Wi-heom-han gyan-gye (2012) was loosely based on the 1782 French novel with the same title by Choderlos de Laclos. The novel has been adapted numerous times, including Les liaisons dangereuses (1959), an adaptation by Roger Vadim, Les Liaisons dangereuses (1988), Valmont (1989), Sexe intentions (1999), and Seukaendeul - Joseon namnyeo sangyeoljisa (2003) from South Korea.
Wi-heom-han gyan-gye (2012) screened in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, and the 2012 Busan Film Festival.
