The reviewers trashing the people in this show are the people fist-fighting you right now during the covid scare while filling their cart with their 50th roll of toilet paper. Some of the folks portrayed may have carried things a bit far, but none of them were wrong in exercising some preparation. They are the ones getting the last laugh now. Give this a watch in case the world doesn't complete it's descent into mad max dystopia, then you'll be working on your own prep!
Doomsday Preppers is the perfect show for me. I'm a retired U.S. Army veteran and ever since being a Boyscout as a child I've believed in always being prepared. I still go camping & hiking in the mountains throughout the year and I am always over-prepared. I am not a Doomsday Prepper; however, I can admire the dedication that some of the families have for being prepared. Are most of their motivations behind their actions unlikely or even ridiculous? Absolutely. As many negative points that could be made about how these people live their lives, there are as many positives. The people are interesting, the show is interesting, and I'm inspired by many of the ideas. Those damn ZOMBIES will be coming any day now. Hahaha!
This show is full of very inspirational people that will motivate you to bring your prepping to the next level.
The production is very dishonest though. They will mislead you so you keep on watching the episode. I even suspect that they distort the story of some of these preppers to make it more spectacular (by introducing drills, explosions, arguments, etc).
The Practical Preppers assessments are kind of weak. Some preppers don't hesitate to point that out during the show!
TLDR; You can learn a lot of stuffs about prepping watching this show but the production is kind of weak.

So overall it's a pretty entertaining and educational show. However I would say that the majority of the shows that I have watched seem to deal with people who have a good amount of money or are very well off and can afford these expensive fortresses and such. One example a guy bought his daughter a 40k rifle and paid for lessons that cost 60k. Rediculous. Show people who are prepping with low to average budgets. Do able realistic preppers. And realistic preppers. Example: honestly I prep to survive the initial chaos then to raid those who have what I need. That's honesty. In an E.L.E ( extinction level event) all bets are off. My family matters your just in my way.
This show has many issues but here are the main ones.
1- It exploits ignorant and misinformed people. This is more voyeurism of a very small fringe of the population and depresses me if I watch it. At some point this show is equal or possibly worse than Hoarders. But in the case of Hoarders these people suffer from mental illness not ignorance.
2- Listening to these people is an exercise in restraint. They are largely uninformed and base their life-decisions on anecdotal information they glean from the internet and other like-minded people as equally ignorant. They lack the imagination to redirect their energy and efforts to endeavors that could benefit society. Their apocalyptic view of the world is unsupported by real-world events, think Katrina, Sandy, and Fukushima, and provides them with a platform that simply reinforces a mistaken belief that all Americans adhere to or support this behavior.
In the end, even if they are right, most people would prefer to die than live in the world these people are preparing for. This is probably this biggest omission they make when preparing for a doomsday scenario: Would you really want to live in such a world?

- AnecdotesWhile the show extremely popular amongst viewers it was being met with backlash by the media and certain advocates stating that the show was giving a spot light to "gun nuts" and conspiracy theorists. A petition was filed on a popular website to get the show cancelled heavily sighting that one of the Sandy Hook gunmen was an avid prepper and the show had a famous gun rights advocate set to be featured in an episode in 2013 but the episode had to be pulled for this very reason. The risk of the show "inspiring violent action" became too great and despite the fact that it was the highest rated show on National Geographic at the time, they caved to pressure and agreed to cancel it
