Spring 2025 might not have aired the biggest hits of the year, but it did have a good selection of anime. From pure comical anime to those that hunger for action and adventure, the season had a good mix of debuts. Of course, some made a comeback with their second seasons, but some of the new debuts stood out as well.

With a good mix of mystery, comedy, action, romance, slice-of-life, and more, Spring 2025 was off to a great start. Now that it is finally coming to its end, it’s high time to summarize the best of the lot that stole the spotlight and deservedly so.

Mal CEO Atsushi Mizoguchi: “Our user numbers have skyrocketed” Since 2020, Thanks to Netflix and Other Streaming Giants Making Anime Mainstream
Image
It is safe to say anime’s not just for basement dwellers anymore, as almost everyone is now watching it. With those stories, art, and emotions, it’s even transcended the term “geekdom,” and people of all ages are getting into anime.

And apparently, no one’s felt this shifting wave of interest in anime more than MyAnimeList (Mal), arguably the go-to place for keeping tabs on your favorite shows. And their user numbers?

They have “skyrocketed” since 2020, according to some recent revelations from their CEO, Atsushi Mizoguchi. And the reason? Those streaming giants like Netflix, which are telling you that anime is no longer a nerd hobby, but it’s a worldwide obsession now.

Streaming platforms are drawing in waves of new anime fans

The year is 2020, the same year we all got stuck at home scrolling through news and binge-watching shows to kill the boredom. And guess what?...

There Was One Netflix Original That Could’ve Rivaled Dmc Had the Streaming Giant Not Royally Screwed It All Up
Image
As the world was busy celebrating and streaming Devil May Cry on Netflix, anime fanatics missed the quiet premiere of a potential scene-stealer. The series in question is Moonrise, an original net animation (Ona) that Studio Wit helmed. The series was poised to be the next big anime hit, but alas, only a handful of anime fans came to know about it.

Netflix is being held responsible for Moonrise’s state. With Netflix quickly on its way to becoming an anime-streaming giant, people had hope that it would do justice to Moonrise. But alas, Moonrise did not receive any such treatment. Netflix is also being accused of minimal promotion for Moonrise.

Moonrise was supposed to be an apt rival for Devil May Cry

Netflix released Devil May Cry animated series on April 3, and Moonrise just a week later on April 10. Yet, while everyone is busy streaming Dmc, Moonrise‘s launch was barely known to anyone.

David Matranga and Yûki Kaji in L'Attaque des Titans (2013)
Aot Director’s New Anime ‘Moonrise’ Had Voice Actors Perform Without Knowing If Their Characters Would Survive
David Matranga and Yûki Kaji in L'Attaque des Titans (2013)
Masashi Koizuka, the co-director of the second and third seasons of Attack on Titan, has revealed a unique approach taken during the production of his latest anime, Moonrise.

In a recent interview with Mantan Web, Koizuka shared that the voice actors for the Netflix-exclusive series were deliberately kept unaware of their characters’ future.

They were only given scripts for the episodes they were recording, leaving them just as uncertain about their characters’ fates as the audience.

This method, while unconventional, allowed the actors to perform with raw intensity, embodying the same unpredictability that their characters experienced in the anime.

“Recording went sequentially from Episode 1, and the cast only understood the story as they received their scripts. They didn’t know what came next, and we didn’t tell them. They had to perform with the same uncertainty as their characters—unsure if they would live or die.“

'We Didn't Tell Them': Attack on Titan Director's New Netflix Anime Cast Didn't Know Whether Their Characters Would Live or Die
Image
Attack on Titan director Masashi Koizuka has opened up about leaving actors completely in the dark in the new Nextflix anime series Moonrise.

Speaking to Mantan Web, Masashi Koizuka, who wrote and directed Moonrise after previously co-directing the second and third seasons of Attack on Titan, discussed how the new Netflix series developed tension between and even within its core cast of characters -- namely, by not telling the voice actors who would live or die throughout the series up until their respective final moments. "We recorded in order starting from the first episode, but the actors only understood the story when they were given the script," Koizuka explained.

“Why couldn’t Tbate get this?”: ‘Attack on Titan’ Director Is Not Holding Back for Wit Studio’s Latest Anime Netflix Basically Abandoned
Image
When you stream a show on your platform, you promote it so that it receives the necessary viewership. Netflix, however, seems to disagree with this in the case of Wit Studio’s Moonrise. Despite being a great anime with several masterminds working on it, it failed to receive the necessary promotion from Netflix.

The anime’s director, Masashi Koizuka-san, and producer, Kawamura-san, have spoken about the lack of promotion for the anime, calling it discouraging and surprising. They stated that the studio has put a lot of work into animating the show, and it deserves a proper promotion.

Moonrise Season 2 Theories: Can Sapientia Still Be Alive?
Image
Netflix’s recently released space opera anime, Moonrise, is ambitious in scope and scale, and even though it didn’t fully utilize its potential, the eighteen-episode first season of the series definitely left a mark on its viewers. Moonrise chronicles the war of independence of the lunar civilization under the leadership of Phil Ash and his Moon Chains as they battle against Earth’s Joint Army and the specialized VC3 unit. As the secrets of the long-standing conspiracy relating to the interrelation between two civilizations unravel, the heinous machinations of the supreme controller AI, Sapientia, turns out to have acted as the apple of discord. Now, even though it seems that Moonrise has come to a satisfying end in the aftermath of the events of the first season, there remain plenty of plot points that can be used to make a second season of the series, if the makers consider doing so,...

‘Moonrise’ Anime Episodes 1-18 Recap: Did Phil And Jack Destroy Sapientia?
Image
Moonrise, the new Netflix anime series, is a masterclass on how to overcomplicate things just to spoil a plot that had so much potential and gravitas. I do not want to hurt the anime fans, but in my opinion, the narrative would have felt much more impactful if it hadn’t been stuffed with so many characters and subplots, a lot of which didn’t have any real purpose in the larger scheme of things. Before going ahead, I would like to state here that there were aspects of the story that I also couldn’t understand fully. So please bear with me if I falter or go wrong at any place. With that in mind, allow me to try and understand the storyline and find out what was really happening on the Earth and the Moon.

Spoiler Alert

Moonrise Recap, Full Story & Ending Explained: What Happened to Sapientia?
Image
Fans of old-school 80s and 90s anime definitely have some iconic space-opera titles in their all-time favorite list, reasonably so given how series like Legend of Galactic Heroes, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and Super Dimension Fortress Macross revolutionized the medium itself. Netflix’s latest release, Moonrise, an anime adaptation of Tow Ubukata’s novel of the same name, had everything it should have taken to respect the legacy of the classics of a bygone era. With an ensemble of unique characters designed by the legendary Hiromu Arakawa of Fullmetal Alchemist fame, Wit Studio bringing their A-game in animating some of the most breathtaking sci-fi battle sequences, handling of topical issues like the aggressive, expansive control of artificial intelligence, neocolonialism, and societal disparity, and a sweeping, memorable score fitting for the space opera genre, the anime was definitely gearing up for something special. Unfortunately, after all is said and done, there...

‘Moonrise’ Had More Than Just Netflix to Blame for It to Become a Sleeper Anime
Image
Released this month, Moonrise, an adventure sci-fi anime, has been one of those hidden gems, sparking mixed reactions among fans. There is no denying that the animation is beautiful; the action scenes are like fireworks or something that pull you in. With such dazzling animation featuring some compelling characters, this anime has the potential to be the next big thing.

But here’s the issue- for all of that, it feels and looks kind of buried. What’s stopping Moonrise from eliciting more hype? Yeah, part of the popularity issue to consider is that Netflix didn’t promote Moonrise very well. But there’s more to the story than poor promotion.

From some questionable storytelling choices to the sheer amount of anime dropping at the same time, there are some reasons why this hidden gem of an anime isn’t shining as brightly as it should.

Wit Studio’s ‘Moonrise’ Is Missing the It Factor That Made Hiromu Arakawa’s ‘Fullmetal Alchemist’ Stand Out
Image
When Moonrise was originally announced back in 2018, anime fans were hyped. Not only because Wit Studio was involved, but because Hiromu Arakawa, the genius behind Fullmetal Alchemist, was handling the character designs.

That in itself made it seem like we were in for something big. Like, possibly the next big anime classic? Fast forward to 2025 and Moonrise finally drops on Netflix. And well it just sort of shows up without fanfare, without a lot of hype. And when you finally settle in to watch it, the show is cool, yeah, but something’s off.

It doesn’t land like Fullmetal Alchemist did. And weirdly enough, even Arakawa’s trademark style doesn’t pop the way it usually does. Let’s analyze what went wrong, and why Moonrise, with all the star power, just doesn’t rise as high as we hoped.

‘Moonrise’ Netflix Review: Gorgeous Animation Marred By Unnecessarily Complicated Storytelling
Image
It always hurts me when an animated project turns out to be bad, not on a technical level, but on a storytelling level. If the designs for the world-building, the characters, the backgrounds, the foregrounds, the action sequences, the expressions on the faces of the characters, and everything else that you are seeing visually are awful, it’s really easy to say that I didn’t like looking at it. I can appreciate the ambition and whatnot, but I don’t have to split hairs over why it didn’t work for me. Things are different when I love everything that I am looking at, but I don’t feel any emotions. Then it’s the fault of either the characters’ motivations, the lack of emotional stakes, or just the needless overcomplication of a narrative that isn’t as complex as the writers think it is. Recently, it has happened with Kung Fu Panda 4,...

‘Moonrise’ Ending Explained & Finale Recap: Is Phil Dead Or Alive?
Image
Moonrise’s ending was about saving Mary from the clutches of the L-Zone and also bringing an end to the AI program known as Sapientia. How did things come to this point? What was the point of the whole war between humans on Earth and the people on the Moon? Why the hell was this show so needlessly complicated? I am sure these are the questions circling in your mind if you have endured the 18-episode slog while giving the show your full attention. Well, I think I should assure you that you’re not alone in your state of confusion, because despite earnestly watching all the episodes, I am feeling quite lost. It’s quite difficult to keep track of every single character, every single subplot, and every single plot twist, especially with all the non-linear storytelling. Netflix Might Be Wasting 7 Years of Wit Studios’ Efforts in Not Understanding the Value of ‘Moonrise’
Image
There’s something seriously frustrating happening right now with Netflix and the anime community. And no, it’s not bad subtitles or those cringe-worthy dubs (though they’re always an issue). This is so much deeper. We’re seeing Netflix totally nail the art of how Not to market an anime. That anime? It’s called Moonrise.

Unless you’re really into tracking down anime news or watching Wit Studio’s YouTube channel like a hawk, you likely had no idea. It’s a little crazy, ’cause this isn’t some throwaway project. This is a massive sci-fi space opera from Wit Studio, the same geniuses who brought us Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and more recently helped spark that One Piece remake hype.

“I can’t do it on my own”: ‘Moonrise’ Will Suffer a Great Dip in Viewership if Netflix Remains Persistent With Its Lack of Advertising
Image
Moonrise has all the makings of a modern sci-fi anime classic, with a brilliant aesthetic, exciting premise, and impressive visuals. Moonrise is not a project that was taken up by a subpar animation studio; it is being backed by none other than Wit Studio with series like Attack on Titan and Spy X Family under its belt.

The story was written by Tow Ubukata, of Psycho-Pass fame, and designed by Fullmetal Alchemist’s Hiromu Arakawa; it’s a carefully crafted project that took years to develop. It is not to be underestimated at all and might end up becoming a classic sci-fi anime with proper execution.

Netflix Is Letting Go of the Ace up Its Sleeves by Disregarding ‘Moonrise’ as an up and Coming Anime
Image
After the recent success of Netflix’s Devil May Cry, the streaming platform has another big anime series lined up in the form of Studio Wit’s Moonrise. The series follows a unique storyline written by Tow Ubukata, who is majorly known for his projects like Ghost in the Shell: Arise and Psycho-Pass. Not only that, but the project also involves Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, as the character designer.

This means that Moonrise has a great team backing up the project, but still there are rumors of the series not being able to become a commercial success. These rumors are the result of Netflix’s inability to promote the series and elevate its name within the industry. This could majorly affect the overall reception of Moonrise which has been in production since 2022.

Netflix Failed Wit Studios’ ‘Moonrise’ By Prioritising Its Other Anime Projects
Image
In the last few years, the popular streaming platform, Netflix, has taken great interest in anime series and movies, which has become the mainstream trend all over the world. From buying the streaming rights of the biggest anime projects to producing live-action adaptations of anime stories, Netflix seems to be quite eager to follow the trend.

However, it looks like this move of the streaming platform might have backfired in a big way. This was witnessed recently when the producer of Wit Studios’ Moonrise, Ryoma Kawamura, had to beg Netflix to promote his show. Wit Studio Producer Calls Out Netflix For Not Promoting Moonrise Anime Properly

Netflix Might Turn Into the Biggest Platform for Streaming Anime Because of ‘Dandadan’

While Netflix was already dominating the global streaming landscape, with its latest foray into anime, it might just become the only go-to streaming platform for any viewer. With so many live-action series (Western & Eastern) already under its belt, Netflix has been quietly building its anime arsenal, and the tide is now turning in its favor.

The question on everyone’s mind is: Can Netflix conquer the global anime streaming market while we have others like Crunchyroll and Toonami? Surprisingly, the odds seem to be in its favor because of all the Netflix-exclusive content it has.

Furthermore, shows like Dandadan are keeping Netflix’s ambitious plans alive. With the way it also dipped its hands into the anime creation landscape, the possibility of it becoming the go-to destination for otakus all over is becoming almost inevitable.
