It is probably true that any black comedy is rarely laugh out loud funny, but I suppose that depends on your sense of humour? This starts off light hearted enough before turning to the theme of its title, and exploring the darker side of peoples natures when a bag of money comes into play. So the early, light hearted smiles and chuckles, give way to a more uncomfortable feeling as the bodies begin to fall, whilst avoiding becoming too morose.
The look and sound is at the higher end of B movie standard, the script is respectably tight and coherent, the characters are believably eccentric, likeable, and interesting. There are some great comedy performances delivering tight, well structured and funny/amusing dialogue.
Maybe not a Saturday night must see, but definitely a Friday night weekend opener.

From time to time we get to watch a good comedy you know the comedy that matters not the stupid comedy and this one is a good comedy.
Since I saw the trailer I was laughing at the parts where you say that is a good joke a good scene and it did not disappoint at all.
The whole movie is kind of a comic mess just from one wrong decision but it pays at the end and you feel good watching it and even talking about it to your friends.
The cast did well everyone played his parts and played his/her role perfectly. I would recommend it to everyone who is longing for a good comedy not stupid circus comedy but real comedy.

Do yourself a big favor and skip the trailer. This is a fairly dark movie but I suspect the marketing department didn't quite know how to present it. So they put the lighter/funnier moments in the trailer and turned it loose, hoping for the best.
The movie itself was quite intriguing. A wide assortment of characters, of varying moral character, end up on a slippery downward slope of their own doing.
Excellent cinematography with good acting all around. Tim Blake Nelson? What can I say? I'd watch him read the phone book and he was superb as a slimeball.
Definitely worth watching, just be aware the trailer painted something a bit lighter.

Greedy People is a black comedy clearly inspired by the Coen brothers as its colourful cast of characters squabble over a bag of money without communicating to one another, leading to disastrous results. It's obviously not as well done as its inspirations, especially since the shift from quirky comedy to thriller isn't smooth but it remains twisty fun. The humour is mostly front-loaded and the biggest shocks come towards the end.
It starts off as a two-hander between Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Himesh Patel, who have a suitably awkward rapport and Gordon-Levitt's washed up cop who spends his days learning mandarin and playing his own music is definitely the highlight of the whole film. Lily James takes control for a chapter, grappling with what she's doing effectively and Uzo Aduba is the unwavering moral centre in the vein of Marge Gunderson.
Potsy Ponciroli's direction waits until over 20 minutes in to drop the title which works beautifully and the most serious moments taking place in torrential rainfall makes those scenes look so good. The chaptered structure also works with it having a fairly big cast who all do their own things and the film has a real talent for executing those characters. Jordan Lehning's score has a fittingly quirky nature as well which disappears in the second half.

It's probably a movie that well sail under the Grid of a lot of viewers, but it shouldn't be. It a fun and bold crime comedy that gets a little bit dark towards the end of it. It hangs on high branches as a vision and as an inspiration, but it manages to hold any expectations and pulls through a great, interesting, funny and compelling movie with same plot.
Its half mystery and half known. It has a classic format and movie template that is built on the foundation of one domino that is falling and causes the other to get their dance started. One event ignites a chin of hidden events that will reveal what ever needs to get up to the surface and grab you by the balls, to stay and watch the movie with a lot of interest.
It has a fine cast, that includes three main actors that has already built their name through the years and worth buying a ticket for the movie theatre. The one that is pulling the strings (Potsy Ponciroli) is less familiar but has his hands in some good Hollywood projects ("Old Henry", which was his first corporation with Tim Blake Nelson, before the current one).
Ponciroli is doing great work with the setting the paste of the movie and moves elegantly between the genres of comedy and drama until all is set to take the proper direction of thriller and seal the deal with it.
This movie is not perfect or even close to it. It imitates a lot of other the excelled in this genre, but is manages to surprise with its final result. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is stealing the show, as expected and the others are riding along properly, but no one is stealing the show from Ponciroli and his way of paying great tribute to other movies giants.

Police Officer Will Shelley (Himesh Patel) and his very pregnant wife Paige (Lily James) are new to an island community. It's Will's first day at work. He accidentally kills a housewife and finds a load of cash. His partner Officer Terry Brogan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) suggests stealing the cash and faking a robbery homicide.
I have a couple of issues with the money. First, real thieves would never leave the cash with another thief. Will should demand his share right away and hide it himself. Second and more confounding, I don't know how Paige got the cash to the hospital. Did no one ask what's in that plastic bag? It seems highly unlikely. This is nowhere Coen Brothers level, but there is still some good dark humor crime chaos.

5 stars is typically the minimum IMDB rating for a movie I will consider watching. I was going to give this 5 stars when it was 95% over, but the ending was good so I bumped it up to a 6. I'm surprised Gordon-Levitt agreed to be in this film. It had a low budget, 'B' movie type of feel, something that would go straight to streaming only, or a TV movie. Not bad, but not the quality I typically associate with him. It just felt cheap. I'm not sure if it was the acting, flimsy dialog, the screenplay or the somewhat predictable series of events. But movie just seemed a bit goofy. It was decent, held my attention, but seemed like it was missing something. I do appreciate that it was light hearted and had a pretty good ending. The ending was probably the most realistic part of the whole film. It's rare in Hollywood to have an ending where everyone got what they deserved, albeit an extreme version of justice.

After watching Greedy People, it feels like the kind of film that made you believe there was more in store, from its pulpy premise. The keyword here is "made you believe." Unfortunately, the promise ends at being thoroughly engaging and not much else. You already know from Act One that none of the characters are likeable, trustworthy-and that would've been totally fine if it were only meant to be a harmless comedy. The film gets darker with each passing scene, and the humour basically transitions into a standard thrill-fest. Joseph Gordon-Levitt puts in a good show, and so does Lily James (did anyone else notice how she ate from the same spoon she fed her dog with?). The rest are functional, playing their respective roles without going overboard-it was still hard to buy into Himesh Patel as a cop.
I really wanted to believe there was more to one particular angle (revealing it would be spoiler-ish) about "respecting borders." That had the potential to really up the comedy quotient, yet it's not even explored. The ending also feels rushed (i.e. For a 1h 52m flick), with a resolution that just doesn't hold a lot of weight. There are a lot of coincidental happenings in the third act, making the plot threads easier to tie up sans emotional heft. A film like this needs the deep, character-driven approach (which it tries to some extent)-where one bad decision really wears down the leads. Not a bad film by any measure, though you'd wish there was better detailing to the key characters.

This movie sneaked up on me and surprised me how much I enjoyed it. This is a tale about deception, greed and true human emotions and is very cleverly wrapped up in a Tarantino esq story which jumps back and forth in time to show the lead up to an event which is the back bone of the story. Its not so much a 'who dunnit' as its clear who has done what but the events which unravel around it keep you guessing with who and why. Not so much a comedy as it is a drama with some darkly humorous moments.
The cast is excellent. Im never a fan of casting English actors into roles which require thick American accents but Himesh Patel and Lily James do an admirable job. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the stand out performer portraying a slightly unhinged and chaotic character. Certainly a role I haven't seen him perform before.

There will be nothing like Fargo anymore. Even like Ozark. Risky scripts in general are dead. I was expecting something risky here, but after watching the first 30 minutes, I noticed I was wrong.
First, the script is predictable, so consequently the movie is weak. Ending is a joke. I do not know why producers and directors do the same kind of movie all the time. To add, they think some decisions are clever, and obviously they're not.
Second, acting here is the best because of one person. JGH does a masterclass here. All the other cast are just ok.
Last, settings and camera work are great too. I have enjoyed the rural aura.
So, if you have watched Fargo and/or Ozark, the movie Greedy people is just a cheap version of it. Think about it. Nothing great here, just empty entertainment.

There is enough going on here to keep you involved. A bunch of people chasing a bag of money and mayhem ensues. The only problem is they never dive deeply into any one character including the mains. Its hard to feel something for people you don't know.
At one point, I was cheering on the hit-men because they were way more interesting than the normies. None of the actors really had a chance to shine because the scenes were a bit chaotic and there was little substantive dialogue. The actress playing the secretary was good. I remember her from Billions and other films.
5 stars - you won't be bored but barely worth the time to type this up.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt clearly steals the show in what could be called an hommage to Fargo - the movie, not the series, that is. At times, it feels like he's the only professional actor in this delightful flick. He goes from doofus to creep and back to doofus in no time. The performances from the rest of the cast lie somewhere between meh, ugh, and eew. Honorable mention goes to Jim Gaffigan, whose small role came as a bit of a positive surprise to this reviewer. The only thing possibly worth mentioning we get from Lily James (apart from a decent American accent) is a a short scene where she shows some remarkable cleavage. Well, if you like that sort of thing. Given that many of us have probably seen her rather unappealing chest, I would call that quite an achievement. Alas, there is no Oscar category entitled "Outstanding Performance By A Bra," a mere oversight by the Academy, I'm sure.
Every now and then you come across a movie that you didn't expect would be good, but then it completely blows your mind. Greedy People is that movie. It's funny, it's brilliant and the message is so stricken and powerful.
I've always been a fan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so watching this was definitely going to happen but I didn't know what to expect especially since it had this strong comedy undertone, and am not very big on comedies. Also the production was kinda b rated, but with a stellar cast including Lily James, Tim Blake and Uzo Aduba, I couldn't stop watching. And thank God I kept watching because things really turned dark right at the end, to my shock and pleasure.
Definitely recommendable.

I saw this a few months ago and the fact that I still remember it means it's good!
I went into this thinking this would be another highly predictable mystery movie but boy was I wrong! There were so many twists and turns I did not see coming that at one point I wasn't even sure if it would ever end. But in a good way.
The acting, cinematography, and editing were all great. And I really loved the setting too.
Highly recommend this if you want a dark comedy that will keep you entertained the whole time.
Why does IMDb have a minimum character requirement??? That's all I had to say about that movie!

It's fun to see Lily James and Himesh Patel together again in another comedy movie, albeit this time one with a much darker tone. (Yes, I think "Yesterday" has a dark undertone.)
The other cast members are equally good, and the situations they find themselves in - entirely of their own making, result in a fun movie that doesn't warrant much analysis.
The Good: A tight script without anything unnecessary to the primary story. A simple to follow plot, that, while predictable, is still satisfying (somewhat).
The Bad: A predictable plot. I wish the writers had been a bit more bold and had chosen a less conventional storyline. That would have earned at least another star.
In the end, I still enjoyed this film and appreciated the acting, pacing, and the moral tale it tells.

Had no idea what direction this was headed when i started watching it. Story is not unique but held me till the end. Acting could have been better but all in all this managed to keep my attention to very end.
Half of the characters were interesting and believable while the other half could have really put more effort into this. Uzo Azuba and Joseph Gordon Levitt brought the star power but the supporting cast mostly fell short.
The writers tried their best but i think they could have done a little bit more to tie up some of the loose ends in the story. The end did feel rushed and they could definitely have arrived at the same conclusion in a better fashion. All in all its just an ok watch.

This comedy crime thriller movie (yes, thriller, they forgot to add that genre to the summary) is the perfect description of how greed can literally destroy people's lives. Greed is like a teeny tiny demon inside someone's heart which slowly snowballing into a giant spiral of destruction. As usual, money as the root of all evil, is also the main problem in this movie. The plot was unraveled one by one without any mystery at all. It's the exact opposite of a mystery. So there's no need to think hard to solve the crime. It's already being told up front. The plot was straight forward with some little twists which mostly were comedic. The thriller part only showed up at the end of the movie. It's when everything started to spiral out of control. It's a good comedy crime thriller movie, one which doesn't have any dull moments. You'll get invested in the story as soon as the wacky stuff started to happen.
These types of films used to be a dime a dozen back in 90s. Usually they were good fun while you watched them, but forgotten pretty quickly afterwards. Only the odd one like 'Fargo' seemed to have any staying power. Now in 2024 we get a rare return to the sub-genre, and it's, well it's a little messy.
Boy this film was convoluted. There is a lot going on and a lot of characters to follow, all with different motives. The suspension of belief for it all to come together the way it did is quite something.
I really disliked the ending to this film. It was nasty, mean-spirited and didn't make any sense. If it had been earned during the earlier parts of the film I would've been fine with it, but it was just tacked on and unnecessary and not what should be happening in a 'fun' movie like this. It left a sour taste in my mouth.
One thing I did like and that the film had going for it was Joseph Gordon-Levitt playing against type. He did it really well and his character was the bright point of the movie. Otherwise though, this one is a bit of a misfire. 5/10.

We haven't seen movies like Fargo a lot these days, and Greedy People tries to be one of those. It's not as smart and quirky as Fargo, but it's worth a watch. All the characters but one are unlikeable, which I felt is what the filmmaker tried to do. I must admit the ending was not what I predicted, and it pleased me. The storyline is pretty good although not entirely original, and it's well acted. Joseph Gordon Levitt rarely fails to deliver, and here he again gave a good performance. Himesh Pattel, Lily James and that lady from Orange is the New Black are also very good here. If Fargo hadn't existed, I would've given this a higher score, but it did, and this felt like an imitation of a masterpiece. Quite enjoyable but not entirely original.
