A decent woman centric espionage thriller!! Jahnvi & Gulshan Devaiah rock !!

Movie Review : Ulajh starring on Netflix!!

Ulajh tells the story of a young IFS officer Suhana Bhatia ( Jahnvi Kapoor) who is given a plum posting in London . There she is honey trapped by the suave and handsome Nakul Bhatia ( Gulshan Devaiah) and blackmailed into giving off secret information to the ISI ( who else.. come on guys be innovative 😁)

The narrative is gripping with the first half focussing on the honey trapping and victimization of Jahnvi Kapoor while the 2nd half is payback time where she turns the tables on the perpetrators with help from an unlikely ally!!

A decent cast namely Adil Hussain as Jahnvi's father , Roshan Mathew as Sebin from RAW , Rajesh Tailang and Chang among others do a great job . However it is the portrayal of a hardcore , cold blooded assassin played by Gulshan Devaiah captivates u the most. On one hand he is this smart handsome lady killer and then with a snap of his fingers , a complete U turn transforming him into a terror monger who will stop at nothing till he succeeds in getting his target !!

The climax could have been a bit tighter. But all in all a grt woman centric film and a decent one-time watch!!

Going with 3/5 for this one.. Adios🙂!!

An Intriguing Tale Undermined by Complexity and Uneven Performances

Ulajh, starring Jhanvi Kapoor and Gulshan Devaiah, presents a mixed bag of strengths and weaknesses.

Acting (1.2/2): The performances by most of the cast were commendable, although a few actors, including the Prime Minister of Pakistan, some police officers, and Jhanvi Kapoor in certain scenes, tended to overact. The director made a genuine effort to manage these portrayals, but the exaggerated moments detracted from the overall impact.

Screenplay (0.8/1.5): The storyline centers around the idea that the political systems of both countries are deeply corrupt. However, the narrative was unnecessarily complicated, featuring an abundance of twists and turns that muddled a relatively straightforward concept. Despite this complexity, the screenplay eventually managed to deliver its core message.

Background Score (0.9/1): The background score was arguably the film's strongest element, enhancing the overall mood and making a lasting impression.

Direction (1/1.5): The direction was decent-neither particularly remarkable nor poor. While there were opportunities for improvement, it was executed competently.

Dialogues (0.6/1): The dialogues were adequate, fulfilling their purpose without being especially memorable or impactful.

Cinematography, Casting, and Miscellaneous (2.2/3): These aspects were well-handled, with the cinematography offering engaging visuals and the casting being suitable for the roles, resulting in an above-average experience.

Overall Rating: 6.7/10

"Ulajh" has its share of strengths, particularly in the background score and technical elements, but falls short in areas like acting and screenplay, where more refinement could have elevated the film.

Exciting stuff keeps one engaged

A young inexperienced and naive lady diplomat of the Indian foreign service joins the London office on a posting. She falls for a charming young man and has a whirlwind romance with him not realizing that that he has sinister intentions and that he is involved in an international conspiracy into which she is now dragged. All alone in this predicament she nevertheless fights back but things are not easy for her. There are lots of excitement situations for her.

The movie is sufficiently engaging in parts . The first half keeps you hooked but the second half drags a bit. Director Sudhanshu Saria has done well with his " taking" and kept the tempo fast paced. One may find fault with certain technicalities in the official aspects shown but then they are not really glaring and what the heck, it is a Hindi movie meant for entertainment. Janhvi Kapoor certainly acts well specially when she has to express vulnerability and anxiety. Her scenes of panic attack are done well. Matching her is Gulshan Devaiah who gives a creditable performance. His cool demeanor, icy looks and measured dialogue delivery as the determined sharp shooter should fetch him roles. Roshan Mathew is impressive as her colleague.

A decent Spy action thriller

"Ulajh" on Netflix is a decent watch, especially for those who enjoyed "Raazi" (2018) featuring Alia Bhatt. If you appreciate a good spy thriller, this film may catch your interest. However, it's important to keep your expectations at an average level. Viewing it as a one-time watch will likely enhance your enjoyment of the film.

The screenplay cleverly keeps the audience guessing about the villain's identity, which adds a layer of fun and intrigue. This element of surprise makes the plot engaging and keeps viewers on their toes throughout the story.

Jhanvi Kapoor's performance adds a unique flavor to the film. She's been navigating the complexities of nepotism in the industry with a mix of sarcasm and as a tool to prove her standing, and her efforts seem to pay off well in this role. Her portrayal brings depth to the character, making her journey more relatable.

Overall, "Ulajh" is a decent action thriller that provides an entertaining experience. If you're in the mood for something light yet thrilling, this film could be a good choice for a casual movie night.

A gripping suspense thriller with a mixed bag of performances

Ulajh is a gripping suspense movie with an interesting and well written plot marred by somewhat average execution and a mixed bag of performances. Gulshan Devaiah is menacing and Roshan Mathew also gives a good performance. Chang and Adil Hussain are both decent in relatively small roles but Rajesh Tailang was very good. I could barely recognize him for most of the movie.

Janhvi gives two very different performances in the movie. She is pretty decent in the first half and is very convincing as the fragile honey trapped diplomat. However her performance in the 2nd half is pretty mediocre and unconvincing as she puts up a fight. Her final scene as an emotionally and physically battered individual doesnt ignite the required fire in one's belly and is one of the reason the movie lacks a deserving punch in the climax.

However despite the flaws in performance and pace of the movie, Ulajh is still a decent suspense thriller that is worth watching. Sudhanshu Saria has pulled together a good cast in a well crafted suspense movie. I hope that someday India gets to see the phenomenal work he has done with Radhika Madan in Sanaa which I was lucky enough to watch at the NY Indian Film Festival last year. In the meantime Ulajh is a decent offering from him. Not great but a nice suspense thriller. I liked it. 6.5/10.

Pathetic plot and shoddy acting

This is pea brain espionage and spy thriller 😡😡😡 it's downright embarrassing how the plot keeps itself at kindergarten level. And we are of course fools to sit through such shoddy stuff.

For the very first time disliked Gulshan - he was soo miscast. Roshan over acts galore and Jhanvi just looks very confused. Again she is someone I have liked in almost all her movies.

What a waste of 2 hours and the bad news is that there is a part 2 coming 😅 How did they even think they can get people interested for part 2 after what's done here? It's unbelievable how feedbacks are not shared.

Keep away. This is not worth nothing!

A Racy Thriller with Room for Improvement

Contrary to the popular opinion floating around, I found myself genuinely enjoying this movie. The screenplay and composition were gripping, keeping my attention hooked from start to finish. There wasn't a single dull moment-the momentum stayed alive throughout. Sure, there are some practical liberties taken, especially in how Jhanvi Kapoor portrayed a foreign service officer, but let's be honest, isn't that standard fare for Bollywood? It's entertainment, not a documentary.

If you're someone who loves dissecting every cinematic detail for realism, this movie might frustrate you at points. But if you can embrace it for the thrilling ride it offers, you're in for a treat. The first half does have some rushed elements, like Jhanvi Kapoor's character jumping into an intimate relationship with Gulshan Devaiah's character within days of meeting. It felt more like a plot shortcut than an organic progression. Still, the film delivers enough intrigue to forgive these moments.

Yes, there are flawed portrayals, like Jhanvi's character jet-setting and freely moving around the city without diplomatic accompaniment. But again, this isn't a slice of real life-it's a three-hour escape. And for that, it works. The final scene teasing a sequel with Roshan Andrews pocketing the black cat ID card? Count me in for part two.

The performances were solid overall. Gulshan Devaiah was as reliable as ever, and Roshan Andrews brought depth to his role. Jhanvi Kapoor has shown improvement in her acting-though there are scenes where her expressions could've been more nuanced, however, it can be be explained as the ice-princess demeanor or poker face usually trained diplomats portray.

If you're after a tightly packed, edge-of-your-seat thriller, this one's worth your time. Just don't go in expecting realism-it's all about the cinematic experience.

SURPRISE FROM BOLLYWOOD

A WANTED CHANGE TO BOLLYWOOD. A GRIPPING SCRIPT, WELL DEFINED CHARACTERS, GOOD ACTING , WELL DIRECTED, GOOD CAMERA WORK. OVERALL A WELCOME CHANGE FROM THE FARCE OF BOLLYWOOD (DO PATTI). THE STORY IS NOT MUCH TO TALK ABOUT BUT THE METHOD OF TELLING THE STORY AND CONVEYING IT IS EXCEPTIONAL. SOME PART OF THE STORY YOUR FEEL LIKE CHILDISH AS THE PROTAGONISTS ACTIONS DONT MATCH WITH THE POSITION ETC. BUT DONT GO MUCH INTO IT JUST WATCH IT FOR THE THRILL. AT LEAST THE EVENTS ARE SHOWN WITHOUT ANY MASALA OR MIRCH OR WITH HERO ORIENTED. IT IS GOOD TO SEE SOME OF THE FORGOTTEN TALENTS ON THE SCREEN ONCE AGAIN. GO FOR IT.

Unbelivably Annoying

Who are these people giving 10 star reviews to this trite? Paid PR or Jahnvi Fan Club?

For someone who is a Deputy High Commissioner for the Indian Embassy in the UK, Jahnavi Kapoor's character is extremely incompetent, naive and downright stupid.

Also, the logistics of the whole thing are extremely stupid. Meaning, Jahnavi's character who is such a high ranking officer does not have any security (not even a PA for company). She comes and goes whenever and wherever she likes. Even the apartment she lives in has one wall which is completely french windows. The first scene I saw that, I knew someone's getting shot at through that window.

She keeps on meeting Gulshan Devaiah unattended. And he keeps on blackmailing her based on these meetings on a continuous basis. But Jahnavi is such an idiot, she just doesn't get it. Why would you go in-person to be blackmailed? Such weak writing.

Such a cast of dumb characters, each one of them. Devaiah's character's tone keeps changing from scene to scene. It was so irritating.

I am through 75 minutes, but I don't think I am gonna finish this movie. I couldn't care less.

Engaging storyline. Nice cinematography

Gulshan Devaiah shines as the antagonist. So does Thomas, in his short screentime. Supporting actors Rajesh Tailang & Adil Khan were also good. The locations, editing and background score were the highlights.

Janhvi Kapoor is getting better with her acting.

Overall a decent watch which keeps you engaged. But the plot was extremely twisted. The USP of a thriller is to bring open ends to closure with conviction. So that audience feels 'Oh ..now it makes sense'. With the overly twisted plot with many characters, that final wow element was missing. Would still recommend this to the audience who enjoy slightly subtle thriller without much gore.

An enjoyable one time watch

Jahnvi continues to show her potential by signing stories with strong scripts, and while she isnt the greatest actor she has grown a lot and i appreciate that she is trying to make a mark in bollywood. This is probably her best performance to date.the movie itself was pretty good and i was on the edge of my seat the entire time. There were one or two good songs. The support cast was good and it would have been nice if they have developed a love angle between janhvi and roshan's character cuz they had a nice little chemistry going on there, but i guess it wasnt that kind of movie. Probably just a one time watch, but it was a good movie for a Friday night.

Only the bots are rating this film 8 and more

There are a lot of paid PR bots here to make this film sound like a great film but its not. Jhanvi was horrible in the film and peiple should not be misguided to watch her on screen. No matter how much of paid PR bots try and give the film excellent review the collections will not come in and they all will be flopped.

This film was a snooze fest and draggy after a good interval. Jhanvi was as usual lazy and underconfident with her lines.

Saving grace is gulshan who stands out almost everytime he comes on screen. He is brilliant with his voice modulation and expressions.

Giving this film 3 stars. And all 3 of them are for gulshan.

A Good Thriller overall

I went into Ulajh Premier last night without high expectations, and, honestly, I'm not a big fan of Janhvi Kapoor. However, I left the theatre pleasantly surprised. The film maintained a consistent pace throughout, with plenty of twists and thrills to keep you engaged. One of the highlights is that the movie doesn't waste any time diving into the main story.

The entire cast delivered strong performances, and the sound design and cinematography were top-notch. However, I felt there could have been an additional scene before Janhvi's character goes out with Gulshan to better establish their relationship. Additionally, Gulshan's character could have been more consistent throughout the film. One technical aspect that puzzled me was the choice to use a 16:10 aspect ratio for cinema viewing, which seemed unusual.

Ignore the so-called critic reviews; many seem to thrive on negativity. Give Ulajh a shot-you won't regret it.

🔥🌟 The Elite's Perilous Journey: Unveiling a Dark Conspiracy

In the world of diplomacy and elite bureaucracy, some secrets are meant to stay buried, but when they threaten to unravel a legacy, the consequences can be deadly. 'Ulajh' takes viewers on an intense and often unsettling ride through the life of a high-ranking official, exposing the fragile threads that hold power together. Director Sudhanshu Saria weaves a gripping tale that is as much about the intricacies of personal relationships as it is about the murky depths of political intrigue.

The film introduces us to Suhana, a young Indian Foreign Service officer, whose family name carries the weight of a rich patriotic legacy. As she takes up a prestigious post in a foreign land, her life becomes a tangled web of deception and desire. The narrative skillfully portrays how Suhana's personal and professional lives collide, creating a high-stakes drama that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

Early on, we witness Suhana's struggle to adapt to her new environment, where she encounters a mysterious and charming local man, played by a charismatic Adil Hussain. Their relationship forms the crux of the film's tension, as it becomes a catalyst for the unravelling of a sinister plot. The camera work and editing excel in these intimate scenes, capturing the raw emotions and subtle power dynamics between the characters.

As the story progresses, 'Ulajh' delves into the darker side of diplomatic affairs, revealing a conspiracy that threatens not only Suhana's career but also her very existence. The film excels in portraying the sense of isolation and vulnerability that comes with being a woman in a male-dominated, high-pressure environment.

While the film's pacing is deliberate, building tension effectively, there are moments where the narrative could have benefited from tighter editing. Some scenes, particularly those focusing on the bureaucratic procedures, might test the patience of viewers seeking a faster-paced thriller. However, these moments also serve to highlight the meticulous attention to detail in portraying the diplomatic world. The film's cinematography shines in its ability to capture the beauty and isolation of foreign landscapes, mirroring the protagonist's internal struggles.

The climax of 'Ulajh' is both intense and thought-provoking, leaving viewers with a sense of satisfaction and lingering questions. The resolution provides closure while hinting at the complexities of international politics and personal morality. Sudhanshu Saria's direction excels in creating an atmosphere of suspense and intrigue, ensuring that the audience remains invested in Suhana's journey throughout.

In summary, 'Ulajh' is a compelling drama that offers a unique glimpse into the lives of those in the diplomatic elite, where personal struggles and political conspiracies intertwine. With strong performances and a captivating storyline, it provides an engaging cinematic experience. While it may not cater to those seeking fast-paced action, it will undoubtedly satisfy fans of psychological thrillers and character-driven narratives.

Pathetic story! waste of time and money!

What is even Bollywood thinking of when showing such kind of the movies to public? It is a position of Deputy High Commissioner for India in London, do the producer even know how to portray or what goes in the life of those people?

Pathetic story line no relevance and just trying to show public and young minds into Bollywood stupid dance in pub. I don't even feel to give movie even a star for this story line and acting.

Were they even aware about the Indian service? Do they even care how they are portraying the officer? It is such a misleading movie cant even watch it completely.

Worst movie and not worth the time and money to be spent on.

A Mind-Numbing ,Cringeworthy Disaster

"Ulajh" is an unmitigated disaster that insults the intelligence of its audience. Janhvi Kapoor's wooden performance as Suhana Bhatia is cringe-worthy, lacking even a hint of depth or nuance. Her attempts at portraying a strong, independent diplomat fall flat, making her character a laughingstock.

Sudhanshu Saria's direction is amateurish, with a convoluted plot that meanders aimlessly. The supporting cast is wasted in underwritten roles, struggling to elevate the mundane material.

The film's pacing is glacial, with long stretches of boring exposition that induce sleep. The twists are predictable, and the climax is a jumbled mess of clichés.

"Ulajh" is a creative bankruptcy, a lazy attempt at crafting a spy thriller. The makers should be embarrassed by this travesty, which fails on every conceivable level.

_Negatives:_ Janhvi Kapoor's performance, poor direction, convoluted plot, boring pacing, predictable twists, and a lackluster climax.

_Recommendation:_ Avoid this monstrosity at all costs. Watching paint dry would be more entertaining than sitting through this disaster.

Ulajh is not worth the ticket price

Unfortunately, the film falls short on several fronts, failing to capture the essence of Indian culture authentically. It seems Kapoors need to told and educated about Indian services :)

We all know the Kapoor family's background and their historical ties within industry hence why that Kapoor girl have the role. It seems like none of the Kapoors have none other skills then acting (Not to standards) , leading to a narrative that feels disconnected from real Indian traditions and values. This misalignment is stark and disappointing for someone like us who are seeking a genuine cultural experience.

The acting in "Ulajh" is another significant letdown. Despite the lead actress being born into the industry, her performance lacks the depth and nuance required to bring the character to life. It's evident that mere lineage does not equate to talent, and this film is a prime example of how acting skills cannot be inherited but must be honed through dedication and training.

Not for me... it is a reminder that just a recognizable family name cannot take yuo places.. t demands a deep understanding of the culture it aims to portray and actors who can deliver compelling performances.

A Gripping Political Thriller with a Strong Female Lead

"Ulajh" is a taut, intelligent political thriller that dives deep into the murky waters of espionage, patriotism, and power games. Anchored by a compelling performance from Janhvi Kapoor, the film manages to maintain a tense atmosphere throughout, keeping the audience guessing till the very end.

The story follows a young IFS officer caught in a web of betrayal and political maneuvering. Unlike typical Bollywood thrillers, Ulajh doesn't spoon-feed its plot. Instead, it unfolds methodically, trusting the audience to keep up with the layers of intrigue.

The writing is sharp, the dialogues are subtle but impactful, and the cinematography captures the cold, bureaucratic world with elegance. Janhvi Kapoor impresses with a mature and restrained performance, showing growth as an actress. The supporting cast-including seasoned actors-adds credibility and gravitas to the story.

Director Sudhanshu Saria deserves praise for crafting a film that's both engaging and thought-provoking. It doesn't rely on action or melodrama but instead builds its tension through atmosphere, character dynamics, and a slow-burn plot that culminates in a satisfying climax.

Overall, Ulajh is a refreshing departure from formulaic cinema. It's an intelligent watch for viewers who enjoy political thrillers with substance.

Eye candy Janvi#flop

Who are we trying to fool here? The audience or the people who worked on this movie?

Janvi is one of the worst actors in Bollywood I've seen and I'm so surprised she still gets roles in movies. Janvi's acting is a testimony of being a NEPO but it doesn't matter, as long you know this profession, you're a laughing stock. She acts like an autistic kid who got a chance in a movie through the " Make a Wish " foundation.

Call me mean, call me immature m, but this is the reality and it's the reason why she is still not a star and just a mediocre side piece!

Janvi is always a bad cast for any of the movies. No matter how many plastic surgeries she does, it's a no-go. PLS STOPPPPPP.

Ulajh deserves a sequel

Full marks to the director Sudhanshu Saria! Ulajh is a well made movie with an intriguing storyline, remarkable casting (with Jahnvi being an absolute dark horse emerging as the surprise package - the haters need to find someone else now), stellar performances by Gulshan Devaiah and Roshan Matthew and even the supporting cast is worth a mention. GULSHAN Devaiah has found a new fan in me I've suddenly become interested in all His movies (recently watched 8 a.m. Metro and he is just too good).

This movie deserves a sequel for sure, mainly for two reasons. A fresh original story which is such a rarity in bollywood and secondly, a stellar starcast with superlative performances!

P.s. The movie ended with a very interesting plot to take the story forward and David's body being stolen from the convoy, a seemingly visible soft corner developing for Suhana towards the climax fight sequence, Roshan also falling in love with her and the seasoned performer Sakshi Tanwar introduced as the Black Cat Head towards the end...there's a lot to play with imagination.

But ofcourse, our "evolving" audience with movies like Pushpa and Animal makin 100s of crores and giving lukewarm response to movies like Ulajh might be a concern for the makers. However, a sequel for direct to OTT release might be a good option!
