MA NOTE

After a brief and bittersweet marriage to my mother, my father, John Olmsted simply could not contain his dream of following John Muir into the woods and against the bulldozers of this world.

When I was two years old he saved his first state park, Jug Handle SNR in Mendocino, CA.

He would go on to save eleven parcels along his "necklace of parks" in Northern California, from Mendocino to Nevada City.

In 2010 he was given six months to live, and I became his caregiver.

This film is a story about conservation, family, choices, and reconciliation.

A father saving California land, often at the expense of his son and family

Filmmaker Alden Olmsted documents the life and final days of his father, John Olmsted. It's a story of John's undeterred efforts, in the spirit of John Muir a century before him, to save lands and trails in Northern California - efforts which often took a great toll on his family and those dear to him. The testimonies of those who knew him paint a full picture of John's life, accomplishments and shortcomings. And John himself, in the late stages of cancer, shares openly about the lands he preserved, the trails he built, but also the relationships he often lost. There is both joy and sorrow, happiness and regret. I highly recommend My Father, Who Art in Nature.

Raw, unfiltered and complex, deeply moving in many ways

I've read books about the Olmsted's family legacy of landscape architecture and visited several of the more famous parks and gardens. Their activism and advocacy for plants, woods and nature, was all consuming. And so too, it was, with John D. Olmsted. My husband and I found this father-son documentary deeply moving about relationships in families and the struggles and joys in life and death. An authentic view of nature, in this case, human nature. Well done.
