Former President Barack Obama won the presidency twice, but the 22nd Amendment prevented him from going for the hat trick. The same rules don't apply to the Emmy race, where the 42nd commander in chief is closing in on his third individual Primetime Emmy. Obama's name was included among the Best Narrator nominees when nominations were announced on Tuesday for lending his voice to the Netflix docuseries Our Oceans, made in collaboration with Higher Ground, the production company run by the former Potus and his Flotus, Michelle Obama.

Obama is no stranger to this particular category having been nominated — and won — twice before. He received his first Best Narrator statuette in 2022 for narrating the Netflix-Higher Ground collab Our Great National Parks, and repeated the following year for another joint effort, Working: What We Do All Day. He and Michelle also won two Daytime Emmys in 2022 for producing animated children's shows.

Eagle-eyed fans of the new reality show Later Daters may have noticed a surprising name in the credits: executive producer Michelle Obama. The eight-episode relationship series, which hit Netflix’s Top 10 list after it premiered on the streamer Nov. 29, follows six Atlanta-area singles between the ages of 56 and 71 as they navigate the modern dating world. The sweet, funny and occasionally racy show from Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, reflects the Obamas’ interest in making programming that speaks to a wide audience, one interested in topics well outside the world of potentially starchy or partisan political fare.

“It’s no secret that people feel like if it’s coming from the Obamas, that it’s going to be a specific thing and that maybe it’s not for them because of who it’s from,” says Ethan Lewis, Higher Ground’s senior vp nonfiction. “But we’re telling everyone’s story.

Our Oceans is a new nature documentary that tells brand new stories of life beneath the waves. Following global ocean currents, Our Oceans devotes its five episodes to different seas and regions, giving audiences a glimpse of how animals endure and thrive across the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Arctic Oceans. The series was narrated by former United States President Barack Obama, who previously narrated Our Great National Parks from many of the same filmmakers.

Key to bringing Our Oceans to the screen was series researcher Inka Cresswell, who last spoke with Screen Rant at a special Our Oceans screening. National Geographic is freshening up its programming slate.

The network has ordered four new series including The Real Finding Nemo and Surviving Pompeii with Tom Hiddleston.

It is the first slate of programming since it emerged that a large number of Nat Geo titles including Life Below Zero and Wild Tuna were coming to an end.

Surviving Pompeii with Tom Hiddleston is a historical exploration about the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. and the preserved Roman city it left behind. Hiddleston, who studied Classics at Cambridge University, exec produces alongside his Loki executive producer Kevin R. Wright.

It comes from Plimsoll Productions, which is behind Nat Geo series including A Real Bug’s Life and The Devil’s Climb. Grant Mansfield, Alan Eyres, Helen Flint and Tom Barbor-Might exec produce for Plimsoll and Carolyn Payne exec produces for Nat Geo.

The move signals further growth for their company, whose projects in production include Rustin, directed by George C. Netflix entered the 74th annual awards with 105 total nominations, trailing only HBO and HBO Max with 140. The former President’s portrait was painted by Robert McCurdy, and the former First Lady’s was painted by Sharon Sprung. This reunion of sorts occurred because Donald Trump neglected to hold an unveiling for his predecessors during his term, which is the usual tradition for American presidents.

The two portraits definitely seem like they were approached by separate artists and provide an appealing contrast. Former US president Barack Obama has won the Best Narrator Emmy for his work on the Netflix documentary series, Our Great National Parks, beating heavyweights including Sir David Attenborough.

The five-part show, which features national parks from around the globe, is produced by Higher Ground, the production company founded jointly by the former US president and first lady Michelle Obama.

Obama was competing in a category full of famous nominees for the award handed out at Saturday (3 September) night’s Creative Arts Emmys, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, David Attenborough, and Lupita Nyong’o.

Obama is the second president to win an Emmy after Dwight D Eisenhower, who was given a special Emmy Award in 1956.

The president has previously won Grammy Awards for audiobook readings of two of his memoirs, The Audacity of Hope and A Promised Land.

Late actor Chadwick Boseman also won an Emmy for his voice work on Saturday.

The Beatles: Get Back and Adele: One Night Only won five awards apiece during the first of the two-night presentation of the Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

The Beatles: Get Back delivered two Emmys to Peter Jackson, for directing and outstanding documentary. “Shout out to the Beatles,” enthused Jackson, who is also a three-time Oscar winner for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and is now halfway to Egot.

Adele: One Night Only’s five awards included outstanding pre-recorded variety special. With the win, Adele is now just a Tony away from achieving Egot status.

RuPaul won an Emmy for hosting his RuPaul’s Drag Race, extending his record as the most honored person of color in Emmy history, with a total of 12 wins and seven consecutive wins for outstanding host.

He was honored for outstanding narration, for the episode titled “A World of Wonder,” which explores Africa’s beaches, Japan’s islands and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Obama is 2009’s Nobel Peace Prize recipient. He is also now halfway to Egot, as his Emmy also will join two Grammys that he won for spoken word albums The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream and Dreams from My Father.

Our Great National Parks is also nominated for its cinematography.

Barack Obama is officially halfway to an Egot, as the former president of the United States nabbed his first Emmy for outstanding narrator.

Obama lent his voice to the Netflix docuseries “Our Great National Parks,” narrating its five episodes that span from Patagonia, Chile, to Tsavo, Kenya. Netflix submitted the first episode, “A World of Wonder,” for Emmy consideration.

If Obama were to ever win a Tony award and the Academy Award, he would achieve full Egot status for winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony — a feat just 17 people have achieved so far.

In 2020, the documentary “American Factory,” which both Barack and Michelle Obama produced under their banner, Higher Ground won an Oscar, but neither personally took home the Oscar. The doc tells the story of what happens when a Chinese company opens an automotive glass plant at a former General Motors location in Ohio, facing intense community skepticism and cultural differences.

Emmy voters were moved by music, handing out five awards apiece to “The Beatles: Get Back” and “Adele: One Night Only” at Saturday’s portion of the two-night Creative Arts Emmys.
