Netflix is adding 15 movies and series this week
Image
Netflix is a bit light on the quantity of new releases this week, but certainly not on the quality. A gripping sports documentary, several great comedy series, and one of the top family movies of the decade all arrive this week.

Listen fam, Netflix isn't going to have an amazing lineup of new releases every week. It just isn't possible, we all know that. There are a lot of competing streaming services out there - even if some of them can't keep the same name for a year at a time.

What's next for Max after HBO Max? HBO? Home? Perhaps Bo would be apt. It does describe the stench of the corporate offices that dumped Looney Tunes as too costly, but will now have Batman shilling for dishwashing liquid, or dog food, or whatever makes them a buck.

But let's focus on Netflix. They can't bring in all the best new shows every time,...

Omar Sy’s New Netflix Rom-Com ‘French Lover’ Will Drop in 2025
Image
Picture: Netflix

Teased late last month at Next On Netflix, Omar Sy’s next project for the streamer won’t be the anticipated—and as of yet unconfirmed on the record—season 4 of Lupin but rather an original movie taking full advantage of his star power. Described as a romantic comedy in the vein of Notting Hill, the movie is set to be released later this year. Here is everything we know about the project so far.

Directed by first-time helmer Nina Rives, the movie is loosely based on the Israeli series Ish Hashuv Meod (VIP) and was shot last summer in Paris (filmed dates were between May and July 2024). The executive producer is Hugo Gélin, who has also co-written the dialogue – and is also notably the husband of Nina Rives. Gélin is himself experienced in rom-coms, with Love At Second Sight (Mon Inconnue); he also directed Sy in 2016 for...

‘Shafted’ Netflix Review: A French Mixed Bag That Can Be Skipped
Image
Creating a comedy series on toxic masculinity can be a tricky affair; the jokes might not land well, and that can lead to backlash. Netflix’s French series, Shafted, takes the risk, following in the footsteps of its Spanish predecessor, Machos Alfa. But does it pay off? Read on to find out.

Centered around the lives of four straight white men, the series attempts to showcase how they navigate masculinity during their midlife crises. While the idea sounds intriguing on paper, it does not pan out well on screen. Apart from one extreme character, the others deal with relationship issues and midlife crises more than anything else. The show can be interpreted as presenting the challenges men face while coming to terms with feminism and its impact on personal relationships because that is the conclusion that can be drawn in the end. While Shafted was meant to be a fun watch,...

‘Shafted’ Ending Explained & Series Recap: Will There Be A Season 2?
Image
After the success of the Spanish comedy series, Machos Alfa, Netflix has released a French version, titled Shafted. The show revolves around the lives of four straight white males and their coming to terms with the changing world. As the women in their lives try to reclaim their rights and desires aggressively, the men struggle to adapt to it. While some of them realize that maybe toxic masculinity had taught them to see the world in a certain light, others were defensive of their male ego.

Best friends Cedric, Tom, Jeremie, and Tonio were going through midlife crises. Cedric had recently lost his job, and he was envious of his wife, Lena’s popularity on social media; Tom’s wife wanted a divorce, but he was not ready to let go yet; Jeremie had recently discovered that he suffered from erectile dysfunction, and he could sense that his wife, Cecile,...

Netflix Adds Germany to List of Countries Adapting Spanish Hit Comedy ‘Machos Alfa,’ Greenlights Season 4 in Spain (Exclusive)
Image
Netflix’s hit Spanish comedy series “Machos Alfa,” “Alpha Males” in English, got the green light for a fourth season in Spain and a fourth international adaptation in Germany, joining other in-production adaptations of the show in France, the Netherlands and Italy.

“Machos Alfa” is the story of four middle-aged friends experiencing midlife crises in parallel as they attempt to adapt to modern sensibilities regarding masculinity. It was created and is written by Alberto and Laura Caballero, Spanish sitcom royalty who both worked on the iconic series “Aquí no hay quien viva” and “La que se avecina.”

The series launched in December 2022 and quickly became one of Spain’s most popular comedy series, where it ranked in Netflix’s top 10 for 13 weeks. Season 2 launched in February of this year, and Season 3 recently wrapped production, although no release date has been announced yet.

Netflix’s New Releases Coming in February 2024
Daniel Dae Kim, Matthew Yang King, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Kiawentiio, Gordon Cormier, Elizabeth Yu, Dallas Liu, and Ian Ousley in Avatar, le dernier maître de l'air (2024)
A big-budget live-action adaptation of a cult Nickelodeon animated fantasy series, the return of a sports docuseries that transformed the global appeal of Formula 1, a new animated feature written by the incomparable Charlie Kaufman, and another season of a reality dating show that inspires equal parts love and hate on social media are among the standout projects hitting Netflix in February.

Netflix’s big feature release this month is the animated film Orion and the Dark, which debuts Feb. 2. Written by Charlie Kaufman, the celebrated scribe behind Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation, the film is an adaptation of Emma Yarlett’s children’s book about an anxious kid who is scared of the dark. The Hollywood Reporter‘s review described Orion and the Dark as a film that “hilariously and movingly [taps] into typical childhood anxieties” and is “infused with ample wit of both the...

Netflix New Releases: February 2024
Image
It’s a weird month on Netflix in February; one that will probably require you to be open-minded about the shows and movies you’re willing to consume on the service.

There are quite a few library TV series arriving this month, for example. If you’re ready to start binge-watching Monk, My Wife and Kids, or acclaimed show Warrior, you’re in luck, as those complete seasons will be available. The Blacklist season 10, Curb Your Enthusiasm season 12, Brooklyn Nine-Nine seasons 1-4, and Young Sheldon season 6 will also be hitting the ‘Flix.

In terms of what’s new, there’s a ton of foreign language content and true crime stuff, but original English language stuff will largely be unscripted fare like Love is Blind, which is back for a new season. There are a few bits and bobs on the way outside of that, though. Netflix’s animated movie Orion and the Dark will debut,...

Netflix Reveals Viewing Data For First Time Across Its Entire Catalog
Image
So much for the black box.

Netflix today has revealed viewership data for 99% of its entire catalog, or more than 18,000 titles available around the world. It published the numbers in a report, What We Watched, capturing viewing from January to June of 2023. It is the first edition of a planned semi-annual look at viewership. The initiative aims to document the the full picture instead of the existing glimpses of only the top-performing programming. The company pointed out that its existing Top 10 lists have a large degree of overlap with the full data, with 60% of the titles in the first-half study having made appearances in the Top 10 at some point.

“This is a big step forward for Netflix and our industry,” the company wrote in a blog post. “We believe the viewing information in this report — combined with our weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists — will give creators and our industry deeper insights into our audiences,...

Netflix Releases First Biannual Viewing Report With Massive Trove of Data, Including for Licensed Titles
Image
Netflix is expanding its viewership data transparency with the release of its first biannual report covering six months of streaming habits on the platform, revealing for the first time how licensed content like USA Network drama “Suits” performs alongside the streamer’s originals.

The new report, titled “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” covers more than 18,000 titles and nearly 100 billion hours viewed between January-June 2023. It includes: 1) hours viewed for every title (both Netflix original and licensed TV shows and movies) watched for more than 50,000 hours during that period; 2) the premiere date for any Netflix original TV series or film; and 3) whether a title was available globally.

Each piece of that information is key here, because these findings aren’t as cut and dried as Netflix’s weekly Top 10 reports and “Most Popular” lists. For example, at the top of this report is “The Night Agent,” a series that debuted...

'Machos Alfa' or ‘Alpha Males’: The New Spanish Comedy about Toxic Masculinity
Image
Photo: ‘Alpha Males'

Netflix delivers a brand-new Spanish comedy about four middle-aged amigos overcoming their toxic masculinity. With an ensemble cast, ‘Machos Alfa’ (titled ‘Alpha Males’ in English) tells four different stories about machismo, sexuality, fidelity, and patriarchy. The series is clever and uses a modern setting that doesn’t overwash the plot with social media as other shows do in their attempt to be relevant. It tackles the issues with its realistic characters and plots. The characters and their issues are believable and do not fall victim to much melodrama. Directed by a woman, Laura Caballero, the series is a lighthearted show that avoids aggressively illustrating feminism.
