Paladin will release the Hitchcockian thriller "The Maid's Room" in theaters and on digital platforms in the spring, company president Mark Urman announced today. The film, which was written and directed by Michael Walker ("Chasing Sleep," "Price Check"), had its world premiere last fall at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Set and filmed on Long Island, "The Maid's Room" follows Drina (Paula Garces), an immigrant who takes a job for the season as live-in maid to the Crawfords, a privileged New York family who maintain a splendid home in the Hamptons. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford spend most of their time in the city, but their teenage son, Brandon, spends the summer on the beach, and Drina must look after him and his spoiled friends. Universal Pictures has set a July 24, 2015 release date for the new comedy Trainwreck, which stars Amy Schumer and is directed by Judd Apatow. As of now, the movie doesn't have any direct competition, although it is sandwiched between two potential blockbusters, Warner Bros.' Batman Vs. Superman (July 17) and Marvel's Ant-Man (July 31).

We first reported on the project back in November, when Judd Apatow signed on to direct from Amy Schumer's own screenplay, which he helped develop. This project will mark the first time the filmmaker has directed a project he has not written. The story centers on a woman (Amy Schumer) trying to put her life back together. No other cast members have been attached, although our report from November indicates that casting is under way in New York City, with the director seeking actors to play the lead's boyfriend, her best friend and one of her co-workers.

Judd Apatow will follow This Is 40 with Train Wreck, starring stand-up comedian Amy Schumer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Schumer will play “a basket case who tries to rebuild her life.” Roles that have yet to be cast include the boyfriend, the best friend/co-worker and a parent. Before coming aboard as director, Apatow was set to produce the pic with Barry Mendel.

The script was written by Schumer, who is best known for her hit Comedy Central series Inside Amy Schumer. She has also appeared in films such as Sleepwalk with Me, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Price Check.

The story follows a young woman (Amy Schumer) whose life is a complete mess, as she tries to get back on the right track. The director is currently seeking actors to play the lead's boyfriend, best friend/co-worker and one of her parents. Insiders claim that the director has met with actors in Los Angeles throughout the month of November, while Amy Schumer and producer Barry Mendel are also holding casting sessions in New York.

While Judd Apatow has produced several projects he hasn't written or directed, this would mark his first feature directorial effort that he didn't write by himself. It isn't known when production may begin. Judd Apatow serves as producer on the upcoming comedy sequel Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, and he executive produces the musical Can a Song Save Your Life?...

Spotlight Pictures has picked up international sales to Sundance 2012 entry Price Check.

Parker Posey stars opposite Eric Mabius in the tale of a beleaguered family man who works for a demanding boss.

Michael Walker directed the comedy from his screenplay. Dolly Hall produced and negotiated the deal with Carlos Rincon of Spotlight Pictures.

IFC Films distributed Price Check in North America last November and released on DVD in March.

Commercial Failure: Bernbaum’s Debut Doa

What sounds good on paper doesn’t always translate well on screen, and Zack Bernbaum’s directorial debut, And Now a Word from Our Sponsor, exemplifies the delirious dangers of gimmicky filmmaking. A cutesy idea that doesn’t seem far removed from something that could have easily been a wooden studio feature top lining Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler, sinks like a lead balloon within its establishing frames. Instead of making any attempt to redirect from the predictable trajectory outlined by its feeble premise, Bernbaum, together with Michael Hamilton-Wright’s naggingly insistent screenplay, instead plunge head long into its flat concept, a stubborn perseverance that makes its slight running time a grueling test of patience.

As I said in my review of Price Check, a relatable situation does not create relatable or compelling characters.  It's important to have an emotional connection to a character, but it's also important to transport us to a place or a situation we don't normally experience.  I don't need to spend time seeing someone order food at Denny's or read a book while eating dinner.  Chad Hartigan's This Is Martin Bonner attempts to connect us into our lead protagonists by showing the loneliness of their mundane lives, but their situations are so crushingly dull that we can never create a bond despite the solid performances of lead actors Paul Eenhoorn and Richmond Arquette. Martin Bonner (Eenhoorn) has begun a job as a volunteer in a Christian-based transitional program for parolees.  He strikes up a friendship with the recently released Travis Holloway (Arquette) after giving Travis a lift to his motel.

Not the Bargain It Appears To Be

Price Check, director Michael Walker’s sophomore feature, coming twelve years after his 2000 debut, Chasing Sleep is a complete 180 from his first film. Whereas Walker’s first foray was in the psychological art house, this latest feature is a comedic character study that has one delectable asset that is both the sole reason to see the film, and also, sadly, what viciously outshines every other aspect of the film; and that’s a wickedly perfect role for Parker Posey.

This week saw the countdown to the end of the Twilight movies, though we didn’t pay it much attention. Kevin gave us a drinking game to play while watching the whole series in marathon form, but that’s it. Maybe we were all too busy still appreciating the greatness of the latest James Bond — a series that fortunately didn’t conclude after only five installments — or skipping through to wonder about the future, as in whether The Mortal Instruments is the new Twi-like sensation. We did, of course, review the final Twilight Saga film, and we remind and invite you to check out that and other reviews of new releases (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2; Lincoln; Anna Karenina; Price Check) as well as an interview with Anna Karenina director Joe Wright. With another week coming to a close, it's time to take a look at just how much critics were unimpressed with the newest entertainment offerings.

In music, Christina Aguilera made a more-than-solid return with her seventh studio album, "Lotus." Still, for most critics, the fleeting examples of her vocal superiority were diluted by over produced tracks that obscured the character of her voice. Elsewhere, Lana Del Rey's "Paradise" was scolded for its weak writing, while Green Day's "Dos!" received negative marks for its lack of energy. The boys of One Direction didn't please with "Take Me Home," either, an album critics described as mostly full of predictable pop filler.

For the last two decades, Parker Posey has been bringing audiences to their knees so quickly, you'd think Darla just shouted, "Air Raid!" Seamlessly segueing between indie cinema and popcorn fare (not to mention jumping from film to television and back again), the actress has established herself as one of the most versatile, gifted and beguiling in the biz.

Posey's latest film, the biting Price Check, casts her as Susan Felders, the newly appointed head of pricing and marketing for a supermarket franchise tasked with salvaging a failing chain. But things don't go exactly as planned for Susan, the company or its employees. Reality is boring.  The realness of emotions is what captivates, but the routine of most day-to-day lives is rarely worthy of an audience's attention.  Being stuck in a meeting discussing market shares and strategies may be relatable, but it's also painfully mundane.  It's also the excruciating world of Michael Walker's indie flick Price Check.  Never has a film made me so depressed by an office environment where people get worked up about how best to implement a new pricing system for a supermarket chain.  Walker never finds the comedy or absurdity in the commonplace, and instead turns his attention to a tired and predictable relationship between a quirky boss and her subordinate. Pete Cozy (Eric Mabius) works at a struggling supermarket chain, and he doesn't see much of a future in his job, which is a problem since he wants to have enough money to be a good father and husband.

The end is finally here... the end of The Twilight Saga, that is. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 hits theatres this weekend, and based on the image above, appears to involve the shady world of vampire arm wrestling. Sounds like a solid finale. It feels a bit like the pandemonium surrounding this franchise has died down, but this should still give Skyfall a run for its money this weekend. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln is also expanding to a nationwide release and seems to be getting very positive reviews. In select theatres we also have Joe Wright's Anna Karenina, Price Check starring Parker Posey, and a few sneak previews of David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook. While gearing up for the release of the Parker Posey starring indie comedy "Price Check" this week, filmmaker Michael Walker also celebrates the forming of a new production company with producer collaborator Dolly Hall. The new banner, dubbed Fog Cutter Films, has begun casting and will start shooting its first film "The Revolution of Jenny Speck," a psychological thriller about the numbing effects of pop culture. Hall has over 20 producing credits to her name, with titles including Lisa Cholodenko's "High Art," Gary Winnick's "Tadpole," and Griffin Dunne's "Lisa Piscard is Famous," and Walker is the writer and director of the Jeff Daniels starrer "Chasing Sheep," "Price Check," and the forthcoming "The Maid's Room." The two have collaborated on the last two.

You can usually count on Parker Posey. Her untiring comedy and witty improv helped her gain notoriety in the 90s, starring (at a young age) alongside older generation comedic vets in Christopher Guest films. This Party Girl was hailed as the original queen of independent cinema. She's one of the rarities in Hollywood who could have easily shot to superstardom with her credentials, but chose instead to take chances on independent films. That said, it's a real shame to watch her talents dry up in the easily forgettable Price Check. The last few days have seen the trailer debuts of some promising flicks arriving in theaters in the coming months, among the most notable being the Patton Oswalt comedy Nature Calls, Director David O. Russell's drama Silver Linings Playbook (starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence), the Deepak Chopra documentary Decoding Deepak, and Sylvester Stallone's 2013 action flick Bullet to the Head. Also in the mix are a few flying under the radar like Alamo Drafthouse's amazing gift to film geeks, Trailer War, Matthew Lillard's feature-length directorial debut Fat Kid Rules the World, and Price Check (with Parker Posey). It's an eclectic selection if not always a promising one.

Parker Posey has been the queen of the indies for over two decades, so when a new trailer comes out showcasing one of her indelible performances, it's less of a surprise than it is a affirmation that all is right in the world of cinema.

And the new trailer for "Price Check" does just that, as Posey once again steals the show with a all-out performance that you can't take your eyes off of.

The calendar may change, but Posey remains the same.

So what is Posey up to this time around? Mabius seems a little lost in this peek of the movie but that could just be credited to his acting skills because being lost actually works for the character that gets caught up in the out-of-control events that take over his life.
