Aamir Khan apparently signed an agreement that the hero won't bash him in the film though he is the villain which irked Gulshan Grover who felt villians should be bold enough to take beating. Because of this 3 is the only film of the franchise in which ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan), does not physically fight the villain during the climax of the film,
Originally Dhoom 3 was going to take place in Mumbai, India (and was mentioned at the end of Dhoom 2) and Shah Rukh Khan was going to play a villain but Shah Rukh Khan opted out of the film because of his regularly sustaining injuries during other films shoot. Dhoom 3 entered development hell for years until YRF finally roped in Aamir with his conditions for how the film should be made. Despite the change in leading man, a few common Shah Rukh Khan tropes remained in the film, namely his tendency to play 2 different characters and to appear completely drenched in water.
It is the first movie of India to be released in the IMAX format.
Rimi Sen who played Jai's wife, Sweety in both Dhoom and Dhoom 2 did not return for the third installment. According to her spokesperson, she was not approached for the film but even if she had been, she would have turned down the role as she was previously unhappy with her small part in Dhoom 2 and was unwilling to do a similar special appearance for this movie.
In June, the filming schedule was further postponed for a month because Khan wanted to prepare himself for his role of a gymnast.
