Serial killers are thankfully rare, and almost by definition not normal. But Fred West was particularly peculiar, and is brilliantly captured here by Dominic West in the television drama 'Appropriate Adult'. The drama tells the story from the perspective of a woman (Janet Leach) who acted as a lay adviser to West during his interrogations; it's a way of avoiding the grizzly schlock inherent in the subject matter, although it also removes much of the dramatic potential - Leach had an ordeal in the witness box, owing to her contact with a national newspaper, but fundamentally did not have so much at stake as the Wests themselves, or the families of their victims. But if not that dramatic, the story is certainly compelling. Gordon Burn wrote a book on the case called 'Happy Like Murderers'; the appropriateness of this bizarre title is conveyed here as well. If it hadn't really happened, you couldn't have made it up. The grimmest truth is that there may still be further bodies out there
APPROPRIATE ADULT is a superior, true crime drama. Fans of those masterful UK cop shows (i.e.: PRIME SUSPECT, A TOUCH OF FROST, REBUS, WIRE IN THE BLOOD, etc.) will not be disappointed.
Emily Watson is wonderful as the dedicated Janet Leach, and Dominic West lives his role as the oddly sympathetic serial-killer, Frederic West. The relationship between Leach and West is reminiscent of the cat and mouse game between Starling and Lecter in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
Monica Dolan is incredibly terrifying as West's sadistic wife Rosemary. She's truly wicked, with facial expressions and stares that do far more than mere words to instill fear.

Excellent dramatisation of this deeply disturbing case. Respectfully done with classy performances and simple but effective direction. Seriously gripping.
I was 14 when this atrocity came to light. And it was everywhere. I live, to this day, quite local to the area.
And as a result Gloucestershire became known country, and possibly world wide for two things after this. The Cheltenham races and a prolific serial killer.
This series was quite spot on. Hell Dominic West is near uncanny in his appearance of Fred. And the same goes for rose's actress.
Of course I can't say much for what went on during the investigation, I was a 14 year old at the time and certainly not privy to it at all, obviously, but this did bring back memories.
A very powerful and striking set of performances. Masterful and respectful treatment as far it can be.
So why the 7/10?
I'm a local. All my life excepting my service in the army.
The accents were terrible. Very bad. No one, even the thickest of Gloucestershire's finest and worst speak like that. A misrepresentation that doesn't shake the image that locals are dim and yokel like. I mean Gustav Holst was a Gloucestershire alumni. And whether you know that name or not you will know Holsts music.
Perhaps I'm being a smidgen too harsh. But it is a bug bear that I have with tv and film representation of Gloucestershire and it's people, That said. Watch it if you like a good, well paced dramatisation of true crime. But be ware... it does not pull any punches. This was a horrific event in real life. And it's represented very well in this drama.

I was very moved by this dramatisation. Brilliant acting which left me with chills. I had to keep reminding myself that these events actually happened, because it's so stomach churning. This is definitely a must-see!

- AnecdotesThe Wests' former house at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester, England, was demolished in 1996, two years after the Wests were arrested. The exterior of the Cromwell Street house was recreated using an abandoned building in Cardiff Street, itself on an abandoned street slated for demolition at the time, in Higher Broughton, a suburb of Salford, part of the Greater Manchester metropolitan area. A second house that looms large in the Wests' story, 25 Midland Road, still stands, and its exterior is featured in the mini-series.
