Paramount+ with Showtime confirmed the renewal following the Season 7 premiere, which drew 2 million cross-platform viewers in the first seven days to become the series’ most-streamed premiere ever, via Deadline.

The Chi ties Dexter, Homeland and Weeds for the second-longest run in Showtime’s history, behind Shameless with 11 seasons.

The Lena Waithe-created series already commissioned a writers room back in February.

The show follows a group of residents on the South Side of Chicago who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption.

Showtime has ordered an eighth season of its drama The Chi, putting the show into rare company at the outlet.

The renewal comes on the heels of the season seven premiere scoring the show’s best streaming debut to date, as it drew 2 million views on Paramount+ With Showtime in the week after its May 16 debut. With the pickup, The Chi will join Dexter, Homeland and Weeds in a tie for the second longest-running scripted series in Showtime’s history. (Shameless, which ran for 11 seasons, is first.)

“The Chi” has scored an early Season 8 renewal at Parmaount+ with Showtime.

The news comes just under two weeks after the Season 7 premiere, which was the most-streamed premiere in series history according to Paramount.

The official description of Season 7 states, “With Alicia (Lynn Whitfield) at the helm, the pivotal women of ‘The Chi’ rise to reclaim their power. Yet, as loyalties are tested and new rivalries are stoked, it becomes clear that there’s only one crown and it will come at a heavy cost.”

Along with Whitfield, the cast of the series includes Jacob Latimore, Yolonda Ross, Michael V. Epps, Shamon Brown Jr., Birgundi Baker, Luke James, and Wendy Raquel Robinson.

With the Season 8 renewal, “The Chi” is now one of the longest-running Showtime shows in the network’s history. It now ranks alongside shows like “Dexter,” “Homeland,” and “Weeds,” which all ran eight seasons at the premium cabler.

Douda may be done, but The Chi just keeps going.

With the Season 8 pickup, The Chi has tied Dexter, Homeland and Weeds for the second-longest run in Showtime’s history, only behind Shameless‘ 11 seasons.

The Chi, created by Lena Waithe, has been on a renewal track since the start of the year. As Deadline reported exclusively, Showtime by early February had commissioned a Season 8 writers room. At the time, there were no deals with the cast; their options subsequently were picked up.

As Fox this morning unveiled its fall 2025 schedule, the network has four more scripted series whose fate has not been decided: sophomore Accused, third-year drama Alert: Missing Persons Unit as well as drama The Cleaning Lady, now in its fourth season, and animated comedy The Great North, in Season 5. All are on the bubble as the bottom four lowest ranked scripted series on the network.

Universal Pictures has released a brand new featurette for their upcoming summer blockbuster Jurassic World Rebirth, featuring some never-before-seen new footage and revealing how the new film is more connected to the original than any of the previous sequels.

Netflix’s “Zero Day” added $146 million to New York’s economy, the streamer and the Motion Picture Association revealed in new data released Monday.

The Robert De Niro-led limited series, which supported 2,073 local cast and crew, filmed for 103 days in Brooklyn’s Steiner Studios, Manhattan and Queens; across Westchester County, including Briarcliff Manor, Pleasantville, Purchase, Rye Brook, and Sleepy Hollow; Nyack in Rockland County; and on Long Island, specifically in Oyster Bay Cove.

The production’s local spend included over $1 million on catering and other food items; more than $1 million on lodging and accommodations; over $1 million on transportation, including truck and car rentals; more than $450,000 spent locally on hardware and lumber; more than $24 million spent locally on purchases and rentals, and more.

“Zero Day” also participated in New York’s film and TV tax credit program, which Gov. Kathy Hochul has proposed extending and enhancing this year.

Yellowstone actor Jefferson White has officially joined the cast of the JFK thriller November 1963. White will portray Kennedy's assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald.

Deadline broke the news of White's casting, with Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting) also announced to be playing Jack Ruby in the film. Set to begin shooting this spring in Canada, November 1963 explores the "true version" of the events surrounding President John F. Kennedy's assassination. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Roland Joffé is set to direct.
