13 TV Shows That Weren’t Afraid to Get Political
Image
Plenty of TV dramas skirt politics. They dip a toe in, hint at real-world issues, then pull back before taking a hard stance.

But some shows don’t play it safe. They speak directly to the world around us — whether through allegory, international intrigue, or just two men sharing cigars on a balcony after a day in court.

These shows weren’t afraid to put their beliefs front and center. Some challenged authority, some warned us about where we’re headed, and some reminded us that even across ideological divides, humanity is what matters most.

Sure, Boston Legal tackled hot-button cases — from assisted suicide to civil rights to corporate greed.

‘The Pitt’ would be the first show to win Best Drama Series since ’24’ with a season longer than 13 episodes
Image
As one of the biggest risers in the Emmy odds, The Pitt has the opportunity to accomplish something that has not been done in almost 20 years: winning Best Drama Series with a season longer than 13 episodes. The last time this was achieved was by 24 in 2006. The Fox action serial starring Emmy winner Kiefer Sutherland produced 24 episodes per season as it chronicled a single day. It was also the last time a broadcast-network series won Best Drama.

The Pitt is only the second series in a decade to be nominated in the top category for an elongated season, after This Is Us, with 15 installments. Before that time, broadcast networks dominated the category.

Be wary, ‘The Pitt’ and ‘The Studio’: The Television Critics Association only agrees with the Emmys about half the time
Image
The Television Critics Association has been doling out prizes for over 40 years now, with its first awards show in 1985 honoring The Jewel in the Crown and The Cosby Show. Fast-forward to this week, and the 2025 winners consist of The Pitt and The Studio (one win for Best Comedy Series). Since the TCA's champions are announced prior to the Emmys every year, and cover the same June 1-May 31 eligibility period, awards prognosticators often look to the organization as a pivotal bellwether on the campaign trail.

But that might be a fool's errand.

Over the past 25 years, the TCA Awards and the Emmys have only agreed 40 percent of the time for Best Comedy Series,...

Dexter Revival Show Resurrects Original Series On Streaming Charts
Image
One of Showtime's greatest and most controversial crime-drama shows, Dexter, is making its way up the streaming charts, following a strong Rotten Tomatoes debut for its revival show. The cable channel has provided a lot of seminal shows over the years, including David Duchovny's comedy-drama Californication, as well as Ray Donovan, Homeland, and Yellowjackets.

Following a controversial finale, Dexter was revived in November 2021 with Dexter: New Blood, and in July 2025, the sequel show Dexter: Resurrection debuted on Paramount+.

Per FlixPatrol, Dexter has soared back into the Paramount+ streaming charts for August 19, 2025. The show has entered at #9 in the charts, one position above the revival show Dexter: Resurrection. It clocked up 78 million minutes viewed, compared to Resurrection's 51 million minutes, and Blue Bloods...

“I look at all of the directing nominees in my category, and they’re more than 90% women, which, in terms of change in the world, is extraordinary,” Glatter says. “And the work couldn’t be more different. … This is what the world is starting to look like, so that we are now feeling more represented and our stories are being told. Star Trek legend in talks to star in spinoff that could do 'what Andor did for Star Wars'
Image
Could a major Star Trek star return to the franchise in a bold take and revive his character? It could happen!

Star Trek fans can have a divisive reaction to Enterprise. The 2001-2005 series had a unique setup, taking place in the early days of Starfleet before the Federation was formally created. It was an intriguing take on the first Enterprise under the command of Captain Jonathan Archer, played by TV veteran Scott Bakula.

The show had its ups and downs, often accused of shoehorning in bits of Trek stuff like Ferengi and the Borg, despite how that conflicted with canon. It did have a good cast and some thrills. It’s sadly overshadowed by its series finale, a terribly done holodeck episode that pretty much shunted the main character aside to focus on Riker (Jonathan Frakes).

The series has been mostly ignored despite its many champions. However, there is...

20 years after ‘Malcolm in the Middle,’ Bryan Cranston could finally win his first Emmy for a comedy series
Image
Bryan Cranston won four Emmys for playing a power-hungry drug kingpin on AMC's landmark drama series Breaking Bad. But when he's not masquerading as the ruthless "one who knocks," the actor also enjoys showing off his comedic side.

Two decades ago, he received a trio of Emmy nominations for his role as Hal, the carefree husband and father on Malcolm in the Middle. He also earned laughs playing dentist Tim Whatley on Seinfeld, therapist Dr. Templeton on Curb Your Enthusiasm, and a heightened version of himself on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Now, he's yucking it up as The Studio's Griffin Mill, the outlandish CEO of Continental Studios, who's never met a psychedelic mushroom he didn't like. Image
Exclusive: When Andy Mundy-Castle took to the stage at the 2024 BAFTA Television Awards to collect his trophy for winning the Best Specialist Factual category for Channel 5 doc White Nanny, Black Child, he delivered one of that night’s most unexpectedly memorable speeches.

His voice cracked with emotion as he told an enraptured audience his story: “I come from a council estate in Brixton and this place has been a tough, tough challenge for me to consistently prevail in, and it means a lot. I watched this show for many years as a teenager and I dreamt of being on this stage.”

Spontaneous applause broke out before he added, “I’d just like to say to everybody watching at home who may come from the same background as me: Keep on dreaming, keep on working, get into good trouble.”

The 15 Best TV Shows On Showtime Right Now
Image
Paramount has been in the news a fair bit recently, for good reasons and, mostly, bad (for nerds who like boring stuff like free speech and political independence or whatever). But uh ... they did put a lot of Showtime content on Paramount+. That kinda makes up for it all, right?

The concerning and confounding decisions of the network's parent company aside, Showtime has long been the under-sung hero of prestige TV and the golden age of television at large. Would there be any shows with psychopathic, murderous protagonists without the success of "Dexter?" Would the political thriller subgenre be complete without "Homeland?" And is there a family drama so perfectly and relatably balanced between humor and heartbreak as "Shameless?" Unfortunately, you can't watch everything Showtime has produced on Paramount+ as of writing -- that said, of the shows available, these are the 15 most deserving of a rewatch.

Aboutboul died after collapsing on HaBonim Beach near Tel Aviv on Tuesday morning, his manager Mark Teitelbaum told The Hollywood Reporter.

Ben Ahlers Addresses If He's Leaving 'Gilded Age'
Image
After a shocking twist to end Season 3, Episode 6, The Gilded Age star Ben Ahlers addressed whether he and his Jack character will be leaving the hit HBO period drama. Ahlers' Jack first came onto the scene as the footman of the Van Rhijns (led by Blake Ritson's Oscar Van Rhijn), serving as key hired help for one of the show's central New York families. However, Jack's fortunes changed in the show's most recent season, as Ahlers' character took his future into his own hands with a clever new invention.

Jack's story came to a head in Season 3, Episode 6 (subtitled "If You Want to Cook an Omelette"). After selling his clock invention for a lofty sum of $300,000 in Episode 4, a total that in 2025 dollars would be over $9.5 million, Jack was pushed from the Van Rhijn house. This left the character and the actor's future on the series somewhat in question.

Before Game Of Thrones, Pedro Pascal Was Throwing Hands In This Underrated Boxing Series
Image
The early days of Pedro Pascal's career are marked by brief but memorable guest roles. You can glimpse him in one-off episodes of shows like "Homeland," "The Good Wife," and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." But it wasn't until 2014 that Pascal got his breakout role as Oberyn Martell in HBO's "Game of Thrones," quickly endearing the fanbase with the character's sass and determination to turn the tide in his favor. Although Martell's arc doesn't end in triumph, Pascal's career has skyrocketed ever since, transforming him into something of a global sensation. Apart from embodying Din Djarin from "The Mandalorian" and Joel Miller from "The Last of Us," Pascal has also stepped into the iconic shoes of Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic for the highly anticipated "The Fantastic Four: First Steps."

Long before all that, you might've heard about the FX boxing drama "Lights Out," which unfortunately got cancelled after an exciting,...

He previously earned five bids in supporting for his role as John Carter on ER, but never won. In The Pitt, Wyle plays Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, a senior attending physician who starts a grueling 15-hour shift at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital's emergency room by welcoming four newcomers. Yet he struggles as he is still reeling from his traumatic experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Timothée Chalamet Bombed His Audition For This Hit Horror Series
Image
Timothée Chalamet has been on a historic run of late. The actor recently fronted a string of hit films that have propelled him to true movie star status, to the point that people will seemingly buy tickets to a film simply because it has the Chalamet factor. Sure, not everything the young actor has done has been successful. Some of the worst Chalamet movies include 2015's "Love the Coopers" and 2019's "A Rainy Day in New York," the latter arriving two years after Chalamet's breakthrough performance in the 2017 love story worth falling head over heels for, "Call Me By Your Name." But the actor's recent run of films have all performed extremely well.

After helping "Dune: Part Two" cross box office milestones with his performance as Paul Atreides, Chalamet played Bob Dylan in the Oscar-nominated biopic "A Complete Unknown," which garnered critical praise and saw the actor take on the...

Image
As we await to celebrate 20 years of “Robot Chicken” with the upcoming “The Robot Chicken Self-Discovery Special,” TheWrap wants to turn back the clock to remember all the hilarious moments when “Robot Chicken” co-creator Seth Green, who famously voices “Family Guy” character Chris Griffin, took some heat from “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane in the hit Fox series over the years.

A little friendly shade never hurt nobody, and for folks who are fans of both series, we were here for the crossover gags. And as much as “Family Guy” loved to take shots at the beloved Adult Swim series, let’s not act like we weren’t all staying up to watch those hilarious sketches.

From Peter and Chris Griffin’s battle over who had the better “Star Wars” parody to Stewie and Brian visiting the “Robot Chicken” universe, it truly couldn’t get any more meta than these hilarious disses below.

Gerard Butler’s Industry-Changing 45% Rotten Tomatoes Thriller Is a Surprise Streaming Hit
Image
While Gerard Butler has become synonymous with high-octane action films, it's easy to forget that he was once a straight-up romantic heartthrob. It's just as easy to forget that even now, during what's considered to be the prime of his action-hero career, he occasionally headlines the odd kids' movie and espionage thriller. Not too long ago, he starred in Joe Carnahan's Copshop, a Tarantino-esque noir that barely made a noise in theaters. He also played the lead role in director Ric Roman Waugh's Kandahar, a spy thriller inspired by real events. The movie is climbing up the streaming charts two years after its theatrical release domestically.

Kandahar was released on Prime Video in several overseas markets, and is now available to stream on HBO Max in South America. Thanks to its recent release in those markets, it has jumped to the number three spot on HBO Max's global rankings,...

‘The Chi’ Season 7 Soars To A 3-Day Audience Best & Another Series Streaming Record At Showtime
Image
Exclusive: Season 7 of The Chi is putting up a strong performance on Showtime.

Sunday night’s mid-season episode managed 1.78M cross-platform viewers in just three days, making it one of the top episodes of the season, per Showtime. The episode was up 23% versus the season-to-date average of 1.45M viewers after three days.

Additionally, the episodes is the most-streamed in series history, Showtime says. The network didn’t share specific streaming numbers.

The Chi has been on a growth trajectory the entire season, scoring series’ best audience numbers since Season 7 premiered. The Season 7 debut had 2M cross-platform viewers in seven days and, at the time, was the most-streamed episode to-date.
