Pageant Murder solved by beautician good enough to watch the next one.

This is a new mystery series on Hallmark is which a hair cutter, Ali, at her salon seems to be the best detective the town has. She is a widow who lost her husband in the line of duty. The current Sheriff Tom takes advantage of Ali's knowledge and observation skills to help him solve local crimes...of which there are not a lot. In comes a new out of town detective and a murder at the local beauty pageant. The head of the pageant, the murder victim, has a lot of enemies. But it is a real shock to discover Ali's sister being treated as a suspect...this makes it personal!

I liked the two leads and I think they have potential for chemistry. I am a little concerned about what they will do going forward a hair salon fits in well with a beauty pageant, but beyond solving her husbands murder how will they tie in a hair salon?

I liked the cast and this mystery worked well. I will tune in for the next one to see how it goes.

At this point it doesn't come close to my three favorites Hannah Swensen's Murder she Baked, Aurora Teagarden mysteries and Mystery 101.

Dye or Die

I don't have a bad word to say about the actors in this new Hallmark mystery series. Gonzalo and McPartlin were just fine, and they had a good rapport. But boy oh boy was it dumb. This is a new entry in Hallmark's spunky female amateur detective line. They usually run their own "womanly" businesses so they can take off whenever one of their acquaintances or customers gets murdered to catch the killer. We have flower shops, book-stores, antique stores, and bakeries. We also have matchmakers(!?), wedding photographers, crossword puzzle editors, and podcast hosts. Strangely, in two of my favorites, Aurora Teagarden and Mystery 101, the spunky female amateur detectives actually have mainstream professions. With the arrival of Cut, Color, and Murder, we now have beauty shop owner. What took them so long?

In this one, Julie is taking her talents to the world of beauty pageants in which her younger sister is a participant and she is doing hair. The bitchy show runner gets murdered and there is plenty of suspects because she was evil to absolutely everyone. Julie is the widow of a policeman who was killed in the line of duty (or was it unsolved cold-blooded murder?). So she has ties to the police department primarily through the chief of police whom is she has wrapped around her little finger. Enter new guy, Ryan McPartlin, handsome hot shot detective who she butts heads with because he is a professional. After Julie meets an anonymous text-messager alone in a spooky abandoned house at night because he/she has info about her husband, it was remote throwing time. Except I had to find it first, because I had already thrown it after all the laws she broke and chain of evidence procedures ignored in the meantime. She is rescued from certain death by Ryan and lets just say this show leaves no cliche unincluded.

We know this is a series because after the mystery is solved we have a bit of a cliffhanger while Julie is having a pow-wow with her dead husband at the cemetery because she has decided to move on (is that something you just decide to do?). We know that there is going to be an over-arching mystery of her trying to solve her husbands murder and getting into all kinds of trouble. Not a spoiler, because I'm not psychic, but I predict that the murderer of her husband turns out to be the indulgent good-guy/father-figure/police chief many episodes hence.

Flatline

Give me back Hailey Dean, Hannah Swenson, or The Chronicles. This was just a flatline movie. First it's so cutesy, then it becomes harder and harder to like either of the leads, too many people look alike, and it's just a trite and very tired attempt to bring in a new series. I did not feel any chemistry among the cast. It's not hard to predict revelations coming in the second installment, her photos at the end were a dead giveaway. We are watching more and more Brit Box and Acorn these days.

Crossing lines

I do not rate this movie because I didn't watch it all. I gave up when Ali started going rogue.

I have a personal categorization of these amateur detective mysteries (called Signature Mysteries on HMM) based on how much the non-cop in the story violates procedure and even laws. As a result, I put the Gourmet Detective series in the positive category because the amateur is actually helping the police at their request and he rarely does anything his cop partner wouldn't approve. The different franchises are all over the scale with Aurora Teagarden being near the other end of the scale. This new franchise appears to be on the negative end. One of the first things Ali did regarding the murder was gather DNA evidence from a potential suspect without his knowledge. And she was interrogating people in ways which could potentially prejudice the investigation.

What little I did see wasn't positive.

Put this series on my no list.

Decent whodunnit

This movie is a decent relaxing movie for an evening watch. More of a tv movie type naturally. Everything moves at slow pace. The lead characters have some banters which are enjoyable. The ultimate murderer is not too difficult to locate, though many other red herrings are thrown in between. Don't expect too much and you will be happy.

The visuals and music doesn't have much impact. Acting is decent.

A friendly neighbourhood mystery. One beauty pageant boss suddenly gets done in in the middle of a preparation for the big event. Many competitors and their aggressive moms, support staffs as well as secret admirers are suspected. And a homely sharp brained local girl one ups on the local police to find out the culprit. The new detective also comes under her attraction. All in all enjoyable soft romantic mystery.

Cut, Color, Murder

6/10 - the two leads in this one did not really do much to elevate this story in my opinion, but I am interested to see what happens with that cliffhanger.

An Impossible Premise

God Bless Hallmark for attempting to create interesting crime dramas, but the recurring theme is getting a bit worn out. First, there is a proprietor of a cupcake shop solving murders, then a Crossword writer doing the same, followed by a college lecturer outwitting the bland "professional" detective to solve crimes and now, a hair stylist who is the female version of Sherlock Holmes. I suppose that all of the police professionals did not take notes at the Academy nor have any time on the job. This latest drama follows the same formula, that is, a hair cutter (whose clients only need a trim and are in the chair for under two minutes), who lives in a very hospital-clean town and works in a beauty salon that never needs hair trimmings swept from the floor. On top of her brilliance, she is rude and snarky to the new detective, so you know that romance is in the offing! Also, everyone in the perfect town appears to be in the six-figure income bracket...no homeless, no graffiti, no cigarette buts on the ground in this Hallmark World. Plus, their private homes appear to be from the pages of House Beautiful. If you like perfect environments, cleanly scrubbed citizens and storybook tales, this is the series for you.

More Please!

Those that called this a snooze fest ... I'm not sure what you were watching. This one kept us guessing to the end. Love Julie Gonzalo and Ryan McPartlin aka Captain Awesome. 😊 Yeah it's not true to life but come on this is Hallmark, it's for entertainment not factual real life. We found it entertaining! Loved how the characters progressed from disliking each other to mutual respect to maybe a spark to the cliffhanger ending. All we can say is MORE please!!

You've got my interest but can you keep it

Ignore the naysayers, all amateur sleuth dramas need a beginning where we're introduced to the main characters which means the first episode can feel drawn out. There is a good vibe between the lead actors and the cliffhanger ending means I will certainly watch the next; but a pageant, you can be more creative than that.

This one is annoying.

This is the "one too many" mystery show featuring a female amateur detective solving crimes with a handsome cop. Please, Hallmark, try something new! It doesn't help that the two leads here are unappealing.

Love it

I really liked this new Hallmark mystery movie. It kept my attention love the story line. This movie had twist and turns and made me suspicious of the new guy detective. Wonder what's his story why did he move there and what's his agenda? I can't wait for the next one from the cliffhanger picture.

Hallmark Mystery

Hairdresser Ali Reed (Julie Gonzalo) owns her saloon which is the center of town gossip. It's the busy season with the annual Miss Golden Peak Beauty Pageant. Kyle Crawford (Ryan McPartlin) is the new police detective solving small town crimes. The retiring chief often seeks Ali's help in crime solving. Her late husband was a police detective killed on the job. The pageant organizer gets murdered. That's two murders in two years for this small town. It doesn't help that Ali's sister Chelsea becomes a prime suspect.

I'm guessing that Hallmark is trying to make another one of its Mystery series. On its face, the hairdresser mystery solver sounds ridiculous. This movie does make sense. I like Gonzalo. I don't know if she can continue to keep solving murders. The movie does leave with one murder to solve, but I don't see more running room than that. This movie is fine. Maybe, her husband's mystery can lead to something bigger, but that won't last. I don't see this going for much longer.

Not The Best

This is definitely not the best Signature Mystery Movie Hallmark has produced.

#1-TV stations in the west (Idaho included )have call letters starting with K, not W, as was shown in the shot of the weatherman.

#2-The animosity between the leads apparently ended pretty abruptly. It went from a $50 charge for a haircut to drinking coffee to gether, and sharing tips on the murder.

#3- Fred Henderson seems rather uncomfortable in the role of police chief. He was much more at ease as the town doctor in the "Christmas Doctor"., and did a great job in that role.

#4- Too much time and attention given to the pageant moms and the extraneous rehashing of old wounds.

#5- Overall, too much "noise" in many of the scenes -too much going on, too much confusion.

If the beauty salon is going to be espionage central, I think I'll pass.

MARVELOUS. Eagerly looking forward for more movies. It partly reminds me of HAILEY DEAN MYSTERIES. Thanks HALLMARK MOVIES & MYSTERIES for this new movie series.

Boring and a Waste of time.

What an unlikable lead actress here.

She 'accidentally' spills hot coffee all over the new guy police officer, because he is doing his job and following procedure. Geez. Who does that?

She uses blackmail to get information from the head police chief, who, by the way, is her friend. Nice. 😠

She gathers information, on her own, and puts it in a plastic bag. Hello. She can't be trusted doing this, because, her sister is a suspect. And they take it!

She's so arrogant that she ups her hair trim price to $50.00 from $30.00 because she can't handle that his compliment was 'Not bad.' rather than 'Wow, fabulous, fantastic! You cut three hairs and now I'm perfection!'

What a pill she is. I personally, would never go back there again.

And let's talk about the hair salon and the pageant crap. Waay too much of that.

And, so many of the women looked alike, with medium length brown hair, that I had a hard time keeping them straight.

All in all, a bad movie. Unremarkable characters, and one that I do not recommend watching. And it looks like they are setting it up for a movie number two in this new franchise.

Don't waste your time.

Loved it!

This was the first HM mystery that I have seen and I really enjoyed it. It was fun to watch as well as being fast -paced and engaging. Chemistry among the whole cast was great. Would love to see a sequel!

Two thumbs down...

Overall poor plot and very poor acting.

I've seen the lead actress in other shows and she was okay but in this, she was a big letdown along with the rest of the cast. Sheriff and detective were the most believable and realistic characters of the show.

Snoozer!!!!!!

This one doesn't even deserve a 1! The leads' actings were forgettable and mediocre. The story is far fetched and just plain stupid. The only good thing that HMM did was the Mystery 101 marathon before this movie! It gave Mystery 101 fans to binge-watched the show. 🤗

Do not watch save 2hrs of your life.

I love Hallmark movies, but this one was trash. Poor writing, poor acting, characters that were not memorable and a terrible plot. A hairdresser that is smarter than cops who were idiots is completely ridiculous. I could go on and on and I watched the whole thing in hopes it would get better and it only got worse. Please do not waste your time or effort.

Hairdresser cuts and colors, and sometimes helps solve a murder.

I am just an ordinary movie-watcher, I write reviews mostly to remember if I watched the movie and if so, what my impressions were. If I were a professional reviewer I wouldn't give this movie a very positive review, there are too many things wrong with it.

However, as just a plain old viewer, a retired grandpa, I can say this is a very entertaining movie. What makes it so is that at least three times I was SURE I knew who the killer was, but when it was all over none of them did it. From that perspective it is well-made, nothing too serious for light entertainment.

The small community is having their annual pageant, the lady who runs it has a way to agitate almost everyone. During the buildup to the pageant, she is found dead, with scissors stuck into her back. She was wearing a device that, among other things, showed her heart stopped at 4:33PM, which was key to eventually providing clues to crack the case.

It is a Hallmark movie, my wife and I watched it streaming on Peacock.

Worthy of more episodes

On the upside, this is less about vanity and more about community than I expected so I would've happily watched more, if they'd been made. Whilst I am not into pageants, the movie does emphasise the skills range / commitment required to enter and succeed - it isn't all about putting time and effort into looks but education and work too. On the downside, it is a bit boring to haves another bereaved investigator - in too many shows already. Overall there is a good set up and age range, so plenty of scope for more episodes, had Cut, Color, Murder not got the chop. Maybe they'll be able to another appointment sometime.
