The Neistat Brothers

Why Casey Neistat Thinks TV and Movies Are ‘A Waste of Time’
Casey Neistat in The Neistat Brothers (2010)
Is Casey Neistat “the innovator of vlogging”? That was the gushing description heaped on the filmmaker in an introduction to his appearance at Vidcon last week. He was all for the hyperbole. “Say it louder,” he said as he sat down for a discussion about his career. As a professional vlogger, part of Neistat’s product (and his charm) is his persona: A blend of daredevil machismo and heartfelt humility. In person and online, he emanates a playful warmth and a deep love for his fans.

In addition to sharing daily videos on his YouTube channel, Neistat is a filmmaker, producer, and director. He has roots in the indie film world, with a producer credit on John and Benny Safdie’s “Daddy Longlegs,” which won an Independent Spirit Award in 2011, and executive producing “The Pleasure of Being Robbed,” which played Cannes in 2008.

But the Internet has welcomed Neistat more warmly than any film festival.

From Teen Welfare Dad to YouTube Icon: Casey Neistat Tells SXSW How He Did It
Casey Neistat in The Neistat Brothers (2010)
New York-based filmmaker Casey Neistat has made short films for Nike and his keynote address today at SXSW might be summarized best by the company's slogan: Just Do It.Thanks to the Internet and technology, Neistat said, the distribution model has evaporated and "all you need is the internet connection" to "reach the entire world." Neistat told the inspirational story of how he came to become a filmmaking -- by way of being a teen father on welfare living in a trailer and working as a dish washer. When the self-taught filmmaker started to make movies with a friend ("He had a computer. I had a camera."), Neistat discovered his passion. "It was the most exhilarating feeling in the world," he said. "We had something we made that was this movie. It was shit. It was unwatchable, but it was fun." After attaining commercial success with an HBO show ("The Neistat Brothers...

Watch: Director/YouTube Sensation Casey Neistat Snowboards New York City
Casey Neistat in The Neistat Brothers (2010)
Casey Neistat is a man of many interests: he co-created, wrote and directed the HBO series "The Neistat Brothers," won a John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirit Awards for producing "Daddy Long Legs" in 2012, and recently was announced as a keynote speaker at this year's SXSW along with the likes of Lena Dunham and Jason Blum. But Neistat is perhaps most famous for his popular YouTube short films, including last year's video of him spending the $25,000 he was paid to promote "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" on helping victims of a recent typhoon in the Philippines. Not one to let this year's winter go to waste, Neistat has released a video of himself snowboarding the streets of New York City. It's a brief video, but it's nice to see someone getting creative with this year's never-ending snowstorms.

Watch: $25,000 'Secret Life of Walter Mitty' Advertising Budget Spent On Typhoon Relief
Casey Neistat in The Neistat Brothers (2010)
Normally when hired to make a promotional video for a Hollywood feature film, you focus on promoting the film. Instead, filmmaker Casey Neistat spent the entire $25,000 budget he was given to promote "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" to fly to the Philippines and help the victims of the recent typhoon which devastated the region. Renting two buses filled with supplies, Neistat ended up delivering 10,000 meals, tools to 35 villages, and basic medicine to local organizations. The New York based filmmaker is the writer, director, editor and star of the HBO series "The Neistat Brothers" and has released dozens of short movies on his YouTube account. Watch Neistat's video documenting the relief effort below.

HBO's 'The Neistat Brothers' clips
HBO's 'The Neistat Brothers' made its premiere on June 4th and, this genre-busting, eight-episode series consists of expiremental short films from the art-world brothers. Each episode spans six weeks in the life of Van and Casey Neistat and blends in comedy and drama. The Neistats' first leap into episodic television, the series is by, and about, the art-world duo known for pioneering the world of online video content. The brothers primarily use consumer-grade shooting and editing equipment, refining the inventive and resourceful spirit that is a trademark of their approach to film, pop culture and entertainment. A mix of biographical vignettes and experiments in curiosity, The Neistat Brothers includes such segments as: a nautical challenge of varying proportions; smuggling authentic maple syrup into Amsterdam; a disappointing and revelatory trip to Mexico; studio renovations; and the search for Van's biological father.

TV Review: Don’t Miss Unique ‘The Neistat Brothers’
Chicago – The great thing about HBO’s unique new series “The Neistat Brothers” is that its about a pair of talented filmmakers who recognize that making movies can and should be as much about community as they are creativity. Rarely has the power of film to bring people together been more subtly and interestingly represented than in this home video series about two men who have chronicled their lives to the point that they have turned it into an art.

Television Rating: 4.5/5.0

Van and Casey Neistat (who were also a part of the excellent indie drama “Daddy Longlegs,” which recently played in NYC) have lived a life on film, building their world around home movie cameras and the ability to edit them on Macs. They’ve won short film awards and have now delivered a show made with technology that you probably have in your office right now. This unique...
