Excellent Police Drama - Worth Watching

I thought this was a really good series and couldn't believe the low 6.5 rating in IMDb. I am a fan of police/crime/thriller/mystery dramas, however so many are mundane, formulaic, and predictable. So I welcomed this series which was a refreshing break from the formulaic stuff being churned out nowadays. I thought it fast-paced and believable with clever and moving interwoven plotlines.

I did have a problem understanding the Jamaican dialect which I'm not accustomed to and wished subtitles had been provided (not available with my edition). Yet one still cares about the main protagonists and what will happen to them. I did lose a sense of plot twists occasionally but that didn't affect my overall enjoyment of the series. I'm already on the lookout for Season 2.

2 Episodes and it is very good so far...

Some things are hard for me to stomach, some scenes cause me discomfort but, the show overall is good, so far. Have to ignore the tom foolery and you'll enjoy it. I don't think certain people will care for much of it because it does not shy away from race. An accurate depiction if you ask me. The characters feel very real, I cant think of any character that plays any sort of noticeable role that does not feel authentic. Well, maybe the main character in a way, as everyone feels as if they are life long, born and raised in Jamaica, Jamaicans, Miller, doesn't. Wait a segundo, she was born there but!......this is a pretty good watch.

My Thoughts on Get Millie Black

I am really loving this TV series so far! The representation of ethnic diversity is commendable, adding depth to the storytelling that resonates with viewers from various backgrounds. The plot has been engaging, keeping me hooked with every episode, and I eagerly anticipate what happens next. The characters are well-developed, relatable, and authentic in their experiences. This concept is refreshing and highlights cultural nuances that deserve to be celebrated. It makes me proud of my Jamaican heritage and showcases the beauty of our culture. I hope the show continues on this fantastic trajectory!

Excellent series

This was heading for a solid eight or nine stars until episode four. I just couldn't believe what was being left behind and the callous way it was done. It was completely out of character and incongruous with the whole thrust of the return to Jamaica. I also had difficulty believing the substitution in the episode on the plane.

Apart from this there were action aplenty, plot twists, loads of murders, intrigue. All of them melded into a coherent narrative that came together in the final episode.

Running through the storyline was a theme of how gay men are treated in Jamaica and the homophobia they suffer. We saw two ways that gay guys dealt with this - one way was to be completely overt and camp like Millie's trans sister. The other was to remain deeply in the closet like Millie's colleague Curtis. Neither way is satisfactory. One leads to brutal beatings and murder, the other leads to exposure and ostracism. Jamaican society is savagely anti-gay, partly a legacy of colonial laws and partly a result of the American evangelical churches that have poisoned discourse on the island. This theme is an interesting human interest strand in the overall crime story.

I really liked this. I just didn't like parts of episode four. I recommend it strongly nonetheless.

A Sleeper!

Does anyone know the definition of a sleeper anymore?! Because this is it...a bona fide diamond in the rough! I just started watching this show on a whim and was whisked away into a mind-blowing crime-drama adventure! I was delighted to see the subtitles to preserve the authentic and beautiful dialect of patois, and equally shocked and taken in by the plight of the LGBTQIA+ community in a culture that is criminally hostile to them. To be honest, I was surprised this marginalized segment of people got the proper story they deserve, so that others can witness how they have to live and die at the hands of so-called humans who act as judge, jury, and executioner over them for simply living and loving as they see fit. The show is a beautifully crafted and rendered in film as it is etched on the heart. Breath-taking! The Black-led cast of Tamara Lawrence, Chyna McQueen, and Gershwin Eustache, Jr. Are magnificent! The idea of telingl each episode from the perspective of a different character is not new, but makes for fabulous story-telling! I'm hooked and will be here for the full ride!

Don't expect Death In Paradise

I watch a lot of foreign shows on My 4 so I am used to watching shows with subtitles but I didn't expect to need them for an English language show.

I binged it over a couple of nights, desperately forcing myself through the language barrier.

Channel 4 don't do a lot of dramas and they can be hit or miss. For every It's A Sin there is a Generation Z. This falls somewhere in the middle.

Yes, it has a quality. It's not cuddly like Death In Paradise. It's hard hitting and, being Channel 4 (but HBO got it first), it caters for minorities.

It's set in Jamaica so, yes, there are more black people than white and more homosexuals and ladyboys that you would expect to see in the real world.

The story is watchable with quite a bit of action plus the Asian copper from The Red King and Holborn was recently driving a truck in Toxic Town but not too any other familiar faces to detract from the story.

Watchable but there are plenty of other new shows around at the moment. If it's not your culture then it's an easy show to give a miss.

Dark, raw, refreshing

I don't understand this low rating nor the lack of ratings. Is everybody just watching some holywood lemonades? It is still new, but fearing it might go undetected.

This is finally a good crime drama cop show. The kinda that slaps you in your face saying this can be very very real.

Well, at least for now and hopefully will stay like that. Kinda refreshing... didn't watch a good crime show in a while. It is dark and raw but It is still a classic. Classic story plot hidding there.

And every actor is playing their role perfectly, nice job in selecting them. Also the picturesque Jamaica and it's gheto, whoa!!

Wanted this to be so much more...

First the Good: Every actor was extremely watchable & the dialogue was great.

Now, the Bad: The great dialogue couldn't save what should have been a good story. Everything felt rushed & characters weren't given a chance to expand.

The absolute worst thing about this series was the truly awful editing & direction. So many scenes where the production team went with the reaction shot rather than focusing on the character that was speaking combined with action that was cut in such a way as to make it redundant.

Waste of time, both creatively & from an audience point of view.

I won't be watching any further series if it comes back.

A well done show set in Jamaica

Meet Millie Black" is a standout series that sets a new benchmark for filmmaking in Jamaica. From the opening scene, it's clear that this is a love letter to the island, showcasing its raw beauty and cultural complexity with unparalleled authenticity. The writing is refreshingly natural, capturing the rhythms of Jamaican life and language without artifice or cliché. Each dialogue feels organic, pulling the viewer deeper into Millie's world.

The acting is equally stellar, with performances that resonate on both emotional and intellectual levels. The titular character, Millie Black, is brought to life with nuance and depth, her struggles and triumphs portrayed in a way that feels deeply relatable. Supporting characters shine just as brightly, creating a rich tapestry of personalities that reflect Jamaica's vibrant spirit.

What truly elevates Meet Millie Black is the visual storytelling. The cinematography captures Jamaica in a way rarely seen on screen, highlighting its beauty, grittiness, and the unique interplay between modernity and tradition. This level of attention to detail and craftsmanship has been sorely missed in Jamaican cinema, and it's a joy to see it executed so masterfully here.

This series is a game-changer, not just for Jamaican storytelling, but for global audiences hungry for fresh, authentic voices. Meet Millie Black has set a high standard, and I can't wait to see more projects of this caliber emerge. It's a must-watch.

Love it!! Finally Something New

Get Millie Black is dynamic! It presents a powerful new story and a raw look at people who are rarely portrayed on television.

This is a refreshing and much needed respite from the same old plot lines and tired well worn characters played by the usual actors that Hollywood loves to return to.

So, if you're tired of seeing the same leading men being PITT against evil forces only to inevitably CRUISE to yet another resounding victory then Get Millie Black should not disappoint.

Thankfully HBO recognized that there is a hungry viewing audience that is eager to see all manner of diversity displayed on screen.

Marlin James did an excellent job transferring the authentic prose of his novels to the silver screen.

This deserves to be renewed for additional seasons. Here's hoping that it does.

Raw like the reality, great characters

I am joining to the ones who gave 10/10 for this series. Raw and tangible, keeps your attention awake from the first scene to... The whole story is very real, the actors makes it more credible. You can feel that this is the true face of Kingston in Jamaica. Bright skins in a hot climate, ruined walls of houses in a poor capital.

This series put Jamaican films in the movie business. It is on the same level with True detectives 1st and The Major of Kingstone.

What a different point of view to see Jamaica from the mainland instead of the oceanview resorts. It is also refreshing to watch real Jamaican faces!

Not very good

An Anglo-Jamacian crime drama sounds as if it could be interesting; but unfortunately, 'Get Millie Black' is disappointing in almost every respect. The writers seem to want to touch on every social justice issue du jour, the acting is uniformly pedestrian, there are odd tonal shifts between scenes, the action sequences are peculiarly unexciting, and the moralising voiceovers strangely addressed to the primary character feel intrusive and strained. And the presence of unique failings doesn't mean it doesn't also have more common ones: a detective hero who doesn't play by the rules because she cares too much, for example. Watching this, I kept feeling that there had to be something in the plot that I was missing; having seen all five episodes, however, I fear that it's simply that it isn't very good.

Amazing show!

This programme is so amazing and I have never seen anything alike. I don't understand the low rating and it really baffles me. One of the best crime-thriller shows I have seen in years.

Did it get a low rating because it's nearly an all-black-cast, with strong female leads and a trans-person as an important side character? I don't know. I hope not.

But I have no clue why this has gotten such a low rating, this series is amazing!

Set in Jamaica and with the main character switching between a thick Jamaican accent and her posh British accent is really cool to witness. The storyline is super captivating and not only is the whole crime story really interesting but the personal and difficult relationships one might have with a family member when everybody is severely traumatised are well depicted and add to the depth of the show.

I just really hope that this programme gets the recognition it deserves because it's truly too good to be ignored!!!

Well worth your time.

Millie-Jean Black grew up in The UK, but was originally born in Kingston, Jamaica, until she clashes with her mother and was sent to London. After a tough time in The Met, Millie returns to Jamaica, where she's investigating murder, abduction and trying to help her sister.

I loved that this felt different, unlike any other procedural cop show I've seen in ages, it's well paced, intriguing, has several actions scenes, it just manages to keep you interested.

I really did enjoy the look at West Indian, Jamaican culture, very interesting and refreshing, and whilst it did spend a lot of time criticising British culture, it's just worth pondering attitudes on being gay in both countries, one is hugely accepting, one isn't. I don't think the writer ignored that, to his credit.

Tamara Lawrence did an excellent job, I really hope we get to see more Millie Black.

8/10.

Sublime

Firstly, this is a 10, so sad that haters (racists mostly I assume, the majority of actors are black, naturally, given that the series is situated in Kingston).

It's a crime show like few others you have ever seen.

Jamaica film noir. Music and intro is up there with the classics of Jame Bond, the cast is just top notch and match well with the location. After an episode or two, you will be completely hooked as I was. The assortment of characters are blended into a very believable ensemble as not one single one of them plays a disposable role. Some, who seem passive throughout, turn out to be critical antagonists eventually--it's a neat trick. The combination of the noir city feel, the absurdly rich areas and the poor suburbs coupled with an overt, but not overplayed, threatening presence of the LBQT-misogynists who basically hammers to death the transvestites with baseball clubs whenever they wish gives the viewer no shortage of suspense and chills. Agent Millie has a great presence and her colleagues from London and Kingston experience continuous, heartfelt turmoil and threats to their curious buddy-cop relationships. Watch it in a dark room without distractions.

Really good - from a different perspective

This takes a little bit of getting used as it starts out - it isn't a traditional UK or US detective show - and certainly not country house murders - and you've got a Jamaican accent to get used to if you're not already - but once you get used to the setting in Jamaica it turns into a great detective show with twists and turns, heroes and villains with some depth, a feeling that there are consequences for actions taken (or not), and there's a goal to reach. The acting is great, and it's great to see new perspectives on things - both modern and traditional. It's also "long enough" - 5 episodes is just right and the conclusion is fast (but makes sense). I read about this show in an "end of year" review and I'm glad I did.

Surprisingly good

The trailers did it no favours. I was really surprised how much I enjoyed it in an age of over creation of police / crime dramas. I liked the twists and turns and it was refreshing to watch. I had to keep the subtitles on as it was quite authentic in Jamaican accents and patois.

The parallel story of gender dysphoria, in a country where homosexuality is banned, was very educational, heartfelt and moving to see how some characters sailed through relationships, love and sex.

I would like to see a second season as 5 episodes didn't do the story of Millie Black any justice. It would be good to see how Millie and her peers develop in another case.

Welcome to Jamrock

I'm a Jamaican who has always hated watching films produced by foreigners, because they never get it right. This got it right. I worked as a civilian fingerprint tech for JCF(JPF), and it was like reliving my time in the police station. Someone did their entire homework. Seeing familiar places and real Jamaican actors made me watch this series in one sitting, pausing only for bathroom and food. It was captivating, suspenseful, and an engaging drama with authentic and relatable characters.

The Jamaican accent and enunciations may be hard for some people if unfamiliar with it, so I'd suggest watching a few videos on Jamaican patois to familiarise yourself. Get Millie Back is a cultural experience, a must-watch, not your average predictable police procedural drama.

Clever Jamaica Police Procedural

Difficult to understand the lowish ratings for this police drama. Perhaps it's because the emphasis on same sex and trans gender issues are at the heart of the plot threads. These are at odds with Jamaica's still rather conservative views about such relationships.

It's also great to see a different Kingston to that which is portrayed on travel shows like "A Place In The Sun". Gritty ghetto areas that show the huge divide between the "Have a Lots" (mostly white, BTW), and those with very little.

Minor moan is that there was very little use of local food specialities. And very little indigenous music but for the title score.

Still worth a look - five episodes that can be gobbled up in one session.

A truly original detective series

I could not understand why so many rated this lower than 8 or 9. The characters in the story are REAL. The setting in Jamaica is AUTHENTIC... which is a primary reason that subtitles are needed. The writing is original and brilliant. The treatment of LGBTQ+ characters and social issues is real. Dammit! There had better be a season 2!
