Avis à la une
I had no idea what this movie was about before I watched it, but it was recommended to me by a friend and then I started seeing it everywhere, so I figured I should give it a watch already. I was a little apprehensive about the two-hour running time (I don't mind long movies in general, but sometimes they just drag on and go WAY too slowly, especially indie dramas I have found that could have been edited down some). So I wasn't really expecting to watch the whole thing and figured I might get bored and turn it off after fifteen minutes or so. But fifteen minutes came and went and I completely forgot about that notion. I was enthralled. The characters fascinate and the actors do a great job. You'll recognize Mark Boone Junior from his many appearances in TV and film, but I was surprised to find that many of the other actors were first-timers. They just did such a great job that I felt like surely they had tons of experience. And the story is great too. I won't give too much of it away, but it's about a lonely guy who concocts a strange and elaborate plan to help two young people to fall in love. It's really unique and beautiful. I'm serious, this is such a great film and everyone should see it. The filmmakers have made it available to all for free, so you have no excuse.
I had the pleasure of seeing this film along with meeting the director in LA last year. Kenton Bartlett has a bright future ahead. His casting and handling of each actor is impressive, even more so given this is his first time as a feature writer/director. The tone, style and performances are consistent throughout. While this is not so much a review on the film as it is a comment on the director, I recommend the movie for story as well for all the attributes mentioned above. It is one thing to see great performances from veteran actors like Mark Boone Junior but when you see unknown talent carry their own with a depth and presence, to me, that is a sign of a gifted director.
Kenton Bartlett's "Missing Pieces" sure does not miss any pieces when it comes to film making. Bartlett's stunning direction evokes allusion to familiar concepts of film making, and not mistakes are made. For his first time making a film, Bartlett does not shy and comes out with this glorious piece of art. I suggest everyone watch it and see what independent film makers can do, there is no need for a large budget when you possess the artistic eye that seems innate to Bartlett. He directs his cast with ease and it seems as if they were at home, no awkward deliveries or difficult areas. Surely, Kenton will become even a more skilled director as the time passes and he shows no signs of digression. I would go as far as to say he will be among the elite class of directors such as PTA, Malick, and McQueen if he continues with his style.
