Disappointed..

To be honest, I feel disappointed... I was waiting for this movie for months, hoping for something that would truly capture the essence of The Witcher, but it turned out to be mediocre at best.

The Japanese anime style, -excessive backflips and triple flips especially- just doesn't feel like our Geralt.

Another issue for me was the blonde girl's voice acting. She spoke way too fast and mumbled at times.

That said, the return of Doug Cockle as Geralt's voice was a highlight. Hearing the iconic voice from the games brought some nostalgia and familiarity, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to save the movie.

Missable

Some laughable storytelling choices, including one that the writers had the nerve to play like a twist ending despite it being as inevitable as the rising sun. Voice acting does have a "pulled off the street" quality for some of the characters, but the performers from the Witcher show and the video games do a pretty good job.

Also, this is Netflix Witcher so you know going into it that Geralt is the 3rd or 4th lead. But for those who are unaware of how Netflix has managed this franchise, that's worth keeping in mind.

The action is actually pretty slick, although the last sequence tends to drag on a bit.

Altogether, this is a totally missable offering unless animated gore really gets you out of bed in the morning.

Poor Witcher

Something has happened to the Witcher. Somewhere along the way, he has become a side character.

Story: It's not well developed but is serviceable.

Characters: As mentioned, somehow the focus is no longer on our hero - where it should always be - and it's not even on recurring characters important to our hero. This was a major error.

Animation: Passable but clearly on a very limited budget. Had the story been very good, this would have been easily forgivable.

Sound/Music/Voice: Low quality. The voice actors aren't very good, unfortunately. There's not much emoting, if any.

Verdict: Unless you're a die-hard Witcher fan, this anime is not worth your time. I gave six stars, mostly for nostalgia.

Essi's story ruined

Out of all the books, Essi's story had the most impact. Her story was very emotional and touching in the books, but Netflix ruined it. This movie starts well but has no depth, it's just plain. In my opinion, this version shouldn't have seen the light of day.

The story was not complex at all, with some fighting scenes that looked like 1970's Chinese martial arts fantasy movies. It does feel as the essence of the Witcher universe is slowly being lost, only to profit from the brand.i won't be surprised at all if they decide to cancel. I wonder why? (Rhetorical question) Overall, an ok rushed Witcher movie.

Netflix still doesn't understand what Witcher is even about

As books and games fan I have to say. Netflix still doesn't understand what Witcher is even about. They made it another Hollywood movie with lot's of fights and very little amount of dialogue. Everything that made the short story so emotional and beautiful in the book is gone here. Also, for the most part I was just bored and that's because Geralt is so overpowered here. He literally has all human-sized monsters on one hit. He killed at least 30 of the vodniks. We simply aren't worried for the main characters. As its own thing this is just another generic animated movie with a generic plot. As a Witcher adaptation, it's just poor.

Exccentric

Look, I'm a casual Witcher fan, and for the first third of this movie this plays out like a usual Witcher film/game/series/book/whatever. Geralt is stoic and principled, Jaskier is the comic relief (with an admitely sympathetic backstory here), there's a random love interest and there's plenty of gore, but then half-way through it hits you with a musical number and I'm like, what?

This movie is quite self indulgence in its quite stereotypical plot of humans vs mermaids, down to the aforementioned Disney reference, and I'm not quite sure if that's a good or bad thing.

If you're looking for a Witcher story being unconventional, this might hook you up.

I will never forgive Netflix for ruining my favorite Witcher Story

I admit, I am biased. Spoiled by the excellent writing and story of the books, I expect more and more from the series. Not everything has to be perfect, or even royal. But it HAS TO captivate the same soul.

It has to....

This show does not.

I am furious, how they decapitated the story. It had love, determination, conflict, understanding, regret.. This is the story I recommend to my friends if I want them to get into the Witcher universe or even fantasy fiction. I don't remember how many times I've read that story from the books, and cried.

I love crying, when it is over beauty. Yes, drama can be art.

This one isn't.

It is silly, unprofessional, absurd, shallow, ugly and most importantly, soulless.

I can understand what you did to the show.

I can understand why you did a silly spin-off.

But this animation is like drawing a mustache to Mona Lisa.

Decent animation

Comparing to recent Witcher works, this one's more coherent and complete. Not that it really follows the original (which it doesn't), but it doesn't follow it in a sequential way - meaning that it's reasonably straightforward in its choices.

Voice acting is good too, it's nice to hear the Witcher game voice again. And animation quality is quite decent as well - though not entirely, some scenes feel like 3D models were thrown in just to fill the space. Didn't look great at those moment's but otherwise good.

Overall it's a decent animation following a short story in the Witcher story. Not great, but not bad either.

Stop using cat potion as a super strength serum

I am a fan of the witcher books and the games,I tried to watch this show with an open mind but so many issues kept cropping up it made the movie unwatchable for me.

Cat potion should not be treated as some super strength serum and Aard should not be able to pull you only push.

You need to stick to the source material if you want witcher fans to watch it.but on a sidenote Having a animated show about the witcher is a nice idea.it becomes easier to execute than a movie especially the monsters.

Just better writing please, these mistakes are so silly and easily rectified but to a witcher fan it's annoying to see.

You have a gold mine here in story but it's poorly executed Anyway avoid this if you a witcher fan.

Little Mermaid in the Witcher universe, and it's Sapkowski's fault

If you are watching this and are disappointed by the story, watching what is basically The Little Mermaid, but with the Witcher thrown in, plus some other characters that bring nothing to the table, blame Sapkowski and his short story A Little Sacrifice. Almost everything, except the saccharine ending, comes from there.

But to be fair, making a full feature film from a short story, animating it like it's Castlevania and changing the mood and ending to feel so much like a Disney story it's totally Netflix's fault. Hey, but at least they did something based on original material, right?

Poles, don't kill me, but the books were not good and everybody who actually loves The Witcher outside Poland does it because they liked the games. To prove my point, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf was way better than this.

Good first half, disappointing Second Half

This is a prime example of a show that gets a lot of things right and overall is an above average product, however due to the poor track record of some of the people involved, it gets dragged down in the mud.

Yes, the second season of Witcher was an absolute mess riddled with many flaws, however, that failure should not reflect onto this show. This show does a much better job of staying FAITHFUL to the source material and takes a lot of positive inspiration from the video game. They even got many of the original video game voice actor , who reprise their roles and nail the setting of this movie perfectly.

The weakest part of the movie comes in form of the final half, where logic goes out of the window and Geralt for some reason refuses to use 90% of his arsenal during battle. I honestly feel like an entirely different writing team handled the climax scenes and failed MISERABLY.

Visually it is nothing special, but the aesthetic is true to the source and really makes you feel like you are back in the game.

The movie is not a masterpiece, but give it a chance, it is a much better watch than the live action TV show, or at least better than what the TV show later became.

O Siren you've bewitched me.

A lovely animated feature. They added a lot more to the original story which is understanding for the medium they were adapting, and I actually think it works really well. The animation was engaging and the voice acting really well done (maybe except for one unfortunate character). It was lovely to see Anya and Joey as their animated selves, and Doug brought a gorgeous depth to Geralt's performance. It was lovely to see Geralt who's more mature emotionally, and who visibly cares more about his interpersonal relationships. The emotional beats between the new characters were great, and hit very well for me, I especially enjoyed the themes of family vs chosen family. The dialogue was sometimes a tad too modern for my liking, but otherwise it's a great animated film and a lovely way to pass the time, will definitely be rewatching!

Nothing standout, but it has its moments

This is a very average movie with some scenes that are pretty decent, but for the most part it is entirely forgettable. The story isn't particularly engaging. It is full of typical tropes with typical villains. Much of it can be described as, "good enough". There is also a weird musical number out of nowhere that felt incredibly out of place and very Disney. I don't dislike the film overall, but halfway through found myself losing interest. No strong feelings one way or the other.

The combat is just slightly above par. There are a few good fights, but Geralt does too many flips and downward attacks. None of it conveys impact or significance, and gives the impression of choreography rehearsal. Included are also some twists and turns befitting a Witcher story, but much of it feels artificial. Like they were trying for this specific thing the Witcher is known for and you can tell. Honestly, the best part is Geralt being himself, and his interactions with Essi. Outside of Jaskier (who is exactly as you expect him to be), Essi is the only character worth paying attention to, and unsurprisingly one that ultimately justified the time spent watching. But even then, her best scenes come at the end.

Recommended for casual fans only.

The Witcher series' writers did it again, and it isn't a compliment.

I understand the reservations people have with The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf - which I really liked, but that isn't the case -, but this production is by far a worst production than that animation. I wish I could brush it off by saying "what else could you expect from the same two writers that also wrote the Netflix series?" however this was proved wrong with the before mentioned animation, also written by one of the writers of the show - even though Beau DeMayo wrote another great show in the X-Men '97 adaptation - or maybe he is an exception and it is not wrong to assume that re-hiring writers from the Netflix series is a bad idea.

However, something is clear, even for the people that have not read the books, you can clearly tell what comes from the books (Sword of Destiny) and what was adapted from Netflix writers. There is even this part from the books that shows how witty Essi in their investigation, but she was robbed to create a "cool scene".

Overall, this adaptation of the short story "A Little Sacrifice" does way more harm than Vesemir's prequel did.

As a side note, why is the voice acting from Essi so weird?

A good addition to the Witcher series

There were several hit and misses when it comes to the Witcher series. With Henry Cavill departing from the series the future of the series looked uncertain. Eventhough there were many entries that attempted to capture true essence of the Witcher story line none were successful. Witcher season 3 was lackluster addition to the series. The Witcher blood origin is mess without any purpose.

However, Sirens of the deep is a step towards the correct path. It might not be the best in the series but it is a worth contender. The Witcher wild hunt voice actor has returned to provide his signature voice to Geralt which is a highlight through of the movie. Combined with some good looking action scenes, the Sirens of the deep manages provide passable piace of entertainment.

Poor Writing and a Flaky Understanding of The Witcher

I had high hopes for this. Thinking back on the damage they've done to The Witcher IP, this was naive. I re-read the short story that gives the movie its inspiration, and found myself, again, in awe of Sapokski's writing and characterization. In my opinion, it's one of Sapkowski's best short stories. Now, I don't want to be one of those people who harps on about an adaptation not being faithful to the original, but Netflix had so much to work with here. Sapkowski's writing is full of nuance and depth and pathos - everything this adaptation is lacking. The movie goes for cheap, surface-level fantasy action and vandalizes the unique creative depth and character-work that makes Sapkowski's writing, at its best, exceptional. At its best, Netflix has been able to capture some of this - I think back to Renfri from the first episode of The Witcher. But in large part, Netflix has failed to capture what makes the IP special. This is just the latest example.

Story's not the best but still good

I like the idea of an animated Witcher series I feel there's an element to animation you don't get from the live action and it was nice to hear Geralts voice actor (from the game) being brought back for his character. Overall the movie was okay I felt it was a bit rushed but still overall quite refreshing and brought that feel of adventure like how the first season of the live action Witcher series felt. If your watching it hoping it's gonna be a story from the books it most likely isn't but if you like the Witcher you'll most likely find enjoyment from this short movie it's nice to see Geralts character back in action since the 3rd season and upcoming season of the live action series felt dull and boring.

It does the job, but it could have given more.

A new film from the saga of the most famous wizard currently.

Focused on a story from the second book "The Sword of Destiny" and with a return to the somewhat darker tale of "The Little Mermaid".

Chronologically it is set between chapters 5 and 6 of the first season given the mentions made in it.

Personally I liked it, no more than "The Wolf's Nightmare" from 2021 but I think the vast majority of the changes with respect to the short story are a success.

Perhaps many fans will not like this but we must assume that this could be a good path to take in future installments: adapting short stories to this format.

At times there is abuse of CGI in the fights, which are quite bloody by the way.

However, I think it is quite successful to change the story of the lovers and show how the human being is more selfish than anything as demonstrated by the king losing his two sons.

I think the musical moment was also quite unnecessary.

Beyond that, and in general terms, it is a solid movie, with good animation and very epic fights.
