Meneath: The Hidden Island of Ethics

Moments from Meneath still cross my mind quite often. It beautiful, uncomfortable to watch and cathartic at the same time.

I originally saw this extremely well done film almost 2 years ago now. It's been on my mind, so I am about to watch it again. It's deep... and I feel the need to "unpack" it one more time (at least).

Because of the subject matter, this film is potentially a creator of some major inner questions for those that see it, depending one the one's personal relationship or feelings about one particular group of (religious) humans imposing so much on another.

Technically, it's fantastic stop-motion. Differently presented. Even some places to breathe and chuckle a little so that a viewer can take it all in.

Bravo.

This movie had me balling by the halfway point. It was so, so beautifully done. The clay-mation was a fascinating way to represent the devastating underlying as a project of art - I think it was actually more effective this way. It held the childlike, innocence -theme to the story, but also created a really interesting method to transitioning between scenes via the clay-visual-effects.

I think anyone who rated this movie poorly is just someone who's uncomfortable with the story and who doesn't like to face any level of blame and responsibility for colonialism or the institution of the church.
