The Skin I Live In (La piel que habito) and the other nominations for the 2012 Goya Awards (Premios Goyas) have been announced. The 26th Annual Goya Awards (Premios Goyas), presented by the Academia de las Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas de España (Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences), is “Spain’s main national film awards, considered by many in Spain, and internationally, to be the Spanish equivalent of the American Academy Awards.” The awards will be handed out on February 19, 2012 in Madrid, Spain.

Sara is a very pretty, but very lost and confused teenager. As with many of her age, she has trouble relating to her parents; her mother tries and fails to talk to Sara, and Sara's father is increasingly absent. Sara is not doing well in school, and has become obsessed with graffiti art by a Banksy-type unknown. She feels much like Don Quixote, able to see the dangers that no one else notices. Confused and feeling very alone, Sara takes her own life. But she finds herself in a strange, dark world whose in habitants take her under their wing and will try to convince her that life is, indeed, worth living. The 2011 Sitges Film Festival, held 6-16 October on the Catalan coast of Spain, is finalizing its lineup, which now includes Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt, Kevin Smith's Red State, and the return of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, who will be presenting their new piece Livide. In addition, The Thing (2011) has been named as the closing movie.

Announced on Tuesday, the Toronto Int. Film Festival has padded another four Spanish produced or co-produced titles to their 2010 edition. In the Contemporary World Cinema section, we have the International Premiere for Achero Mañas's Anything You Want aka Todo Lo Que Quieras. Mañas, a former actor, returns to fiction after directing the documentary “Blackwhite” in 2004, his latest film tells the story of how a lawyer (Juan Diego Botto from The Dancer Upstairs) undergoes an identity metamorphosis in order to please and secure the emotional stability of his daughter - this after the sudden death of her mother. In a recent interview for film magazine Fotogramas the director declared: "I talk about ambiguity. Of a change in the role of man that puts him in the most ambiguous and insecure place…" and "the change of the man in modern society, which I think is one of the most radical changes of the last years.

Chapero-Jackson's short films have been so successful that they have received theatrical releases and Verbo - his feature debut - is one of Spain's most anticipated of the year. Verbo Spanish PosterFilmax International, Telecino Cinema, and Apaches Entertainment are teaming up to release the Spanish language film Verbo. The film's title translates to verb in English, which seems like a strange title. Yet, this Madrid shot film has a brilliant teaser trailer and the visuals from the clip are sure to delight viewer's dark senses. Verbo's story revolves around a surreal world where character Sara (Albia Garcia) searches for meaning and connection in an environment full of death, danger and great adventures (Shock). Readers are highly encouraged to watch the clip inside, as Europe is currently continuing to produce the most creative, and visually appealing pictures in cinema today. The Apaches Entertainment and Filmax co-production Verbo has a teaser trailer and the film is looking very interesting, regardless of director Eduardo Chapero-Jackson's fascination with light sticks. The preview plays it up big with an epic-sounding score and cool visual effects. The story follows Sara, a teenager who doesn't understand the world in which she lives. Only Liriko, a mysterious character who projects enigmatic messages across the city, seems to understand her. Her search for meaning in this often depressing world will lead her to a secret place, where she will embark on a great adventure towards life, or death. If she succeeds, Sara could finally be able to leave her mark on the world. Verbo opens in Spain later this year.

Madrid -- Spanish distributor Aurum has picked up two of Spain's most promising genre movies this year, Eduardo Chapero-Jackson's futuristic "Verbo" and Eugenio Mira's romantic thriller "Agnosia."

Both titles are produced by Telecinco Cinema and sold internationally by Filmax Intl.

Alliance Atlantis Company, Aurum's parent company, will distribute period piece "Agnosia," starring Eduardo Noriega and Barbara Goenaga, in Canada and the U.K. via Momentum.

"Verbo," is the feature film debut of the European Film Academy Award winner and the first production from Madrid-based Apaches Entertainment, which has come onto the Spanish scene with a strong slate that includes Juan Antonio Bayona's upcoming "The Impossible."

Coming off boxoffice success with the "Twilight" saga, Aurum looks set to beef up on its genre titles.

Having really dug [rec] 2 I'm eagerly looking forward to the two planned sequels which were just reported on today. Directors Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero will split directing duties on each film. I hope that doesn't break the formula. The two co-wrote the third film, [Rec] Genesis, which is slated for Fall 2011 and has to do with the origins of the virus which only seems logical considering how #2 went. The fourth is slated for Fall 2012.

Now for something I've had my eye on for a while and another project being backed by Filmax.. Verbo, a reportedly fantasy/horror about a girl on a journey is supposed to be in post, and the first sales art appeared today which you can see to the right. With American horror flipping around like a fish out of water and gasping for air lately, it's good that someone somewhere is getting things right. Sadly original horror films aren't exactly in abundance here anymore. Thank god for the option to import!

A new Spanish horror flick called Verbo has just landed itself on our radar of all things good and spooky. The flick is in post-production right now from Filmax International (Rec, Rec 2, Sleep Tight) and Apaches Entertainment.
